Re: How much "magic" will be in Shenmue III? (spoiler Shenmu

If you think magic is awkward, why not to see Shenmue from a geopolitical point of view ? Magic is just supposed to be the equivalent of the new nuclear power with powers looking for them, including one of the most important mafias of the world. It's still the story of life.

I really can't see Shenmue turning into a world where this magic is easily mastered by Ryo. If the worst comes to the worst, don't forget all these things can be well and slowly implanted if the story is written with the utmost care. It's just a question of how to introduce them.

Re: I replayed Shenmue II disc 4 last night

Beyond what has been said, these things stick me :

- Relation between Bailu Village and China Emperors, supposing a lot of marvelous (and secret) stuff to discover.

- The mountains of death described in the right painting. " Those who set foot in these mountains have ever returned. " It smells a Shenmue 3 intermediate location with a lot of action and tension moments. I wonder if the "high ground battle" feature is related.
http://nsa37.casimages.com/img/2015/07/07/150707114637212257.jpg

- 50 people live in Bailu Village.

- Assuming Shenmue 3 begins straight away after the S2 end, just imagine this with Unreal Engine 4 :

Re: Shenmue III Kickstarter closing in on 4.5 million!

See, i know i am probably in the minority here, but the free battles were my least exciting bits of the game. I prefer detective work, exploring, mini games, QTE sequences and cut scenes. The free battles aere just OK to me. Like the 70 man battle, or the Beverly Hills Wharf fiasco, or the black suits in the Yellow Head Building. I could leave most of that.

One more good reason to enhance the combat system, right ? Apart for VS fighting fans, Shenmue battle system is hard to handle smoothly while for example Virtua Fighter 5 is much more accessible and pleasing without sacrifice the gameplay depth.

Re: Cedric bomb updates ???

I don't think it will be I and II HD.
Actually, I think that making HD remakes would be more expensive than making Shenmue III. With a remake, they'd have to do loads of extra checks to ensure that everything is the same (even the smallest little events) and with games as large and expansive as Shenmue I and II it will be a very tricky task. I'd also imagine that they'd want to re-dub things as I doubt it would even pass for 'so-bad-it's-good' by today's standards.
With Shenmue III, there is a clean slate to work with.

HD ports on the other hand are viable, but we need to ask ourselves if we really want that and if it will make a good impression of the franchise.

I think remake is just a misuse. We all think about a HD port indeed.

Re: Cedric bomb updates ???

I'm worried about ports though. Shenmue's engine is a bit clunky and far from perfect. I also remember a rumor that SEGA didn't even develop Shenmue's engine and that it was bought/licensed from some company who are now out of business. I don't know if that's true, but if it it, wouldn't that mean that they couldn't tweak the engine and add things such as new lighting effects and stuff?
I'm just scared that awful ports are going to put people off Shenmue III.

When you look at the Shenmue credits, you can see a lot of obscure logo companies so it's a valuable theory. Not an excuse however, they had 14 years to negotiate the right properties. But Sega is Sega...

Why do people keep bringing up Sony giving money for development when we established a month ago they are NOT doing that?

Anyways, I expect independent investors to take notice and help us get to 11 million.

They showed from the beginning that their position was hesitating about the publishing, why not the development ?

Re: Advanced Free Battle!

The Free Battles actually felt like real fights. You got to control Ryo in every way you wanted to and punish your enemy's power flow. It is the most immaculate mechanic ever to be experienced. Yu described it as "Real Time Fighting"

Exactly and this video is the perfect illustration :

Even Virtua Fighter 5 failed to reach this level of realism.

When Suzuki talked about 16 chapters

0) The explanation :
Thanks a French article , I now understand why he talked about 16 chapters. In fact, it has always been 11+5 chapters. The 5 chapters were bridges between the main chapters. That's why we had the boat and the train as unique chapters.

--------

1) From the Dreamcast Official US magazine 2000 November uploaded by Telekill ( http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=48738 )

Shenmue 1 : Chapter 1 to 5
Shenmue 2 : Chapter 6 to 10
Shenmue 3 : Chapter 11 to 16
with Shenmue 3 supposed to be the last episode.

http://nsa37.casimages.com/img/2015/08/21/150821083353227599.jpg

2) Then we got this image from AM2 according Shenmue Master
http://shenmueangel.free.fr/images/le-site/faq/chapitres.gif
and the following informations :
Chapter 1 Yokosuka
Chapter 2 The boat (cancelled)
Chapter 3 Aberdeen
Chapter 4 Wan Chai
Chapter 5 Kowloon
Chapter 6 Guilin
Chapter 7
Chapter 8
Chapter 9
Chapter 10
Chapter 11
Chapter 12
Chapter 13
Chapter 14
Chapter 15
Chapter 16

3) Then the 16 chapters became 11 in 2014 :

http://www.wispartantotalgames.co.uk/totalgames/sites/default/files/shenmue-sega-chaptures.jpg

4) The last Yu's tweet answer after the kickstarter :
http://nsa37.casimages.com/img/2015/08/21/15082108550546161.jpg
https://twitter.com/yu_suzuki_jp/status/617157839539212288

5) Nico Nico interview https://youtu.be/IntCDAc6c8Y?t=50m00s (from Switch's translation)

Chapter 1 Yokosuka.
Chapter 2 Hong Kong
Chapter 3 Train (cancelled)
Chapter 4 ?? Arrival at Guilin (moved within Chapter 2) ??
Chapter 5 Meeting Shenhua (moved or partially moved within Chapter 2)
Chapter 6 Meeting Shenhua
Chapter 7
Chapter 8
Chapter 9
Chapter 10
Chapter 11

To be precise, Shenmue I is the whole of Chapter 1, as is. And Shenmue II corresponds with the Hong Kong chapter. The part about meeting Shenhua was originally in Chapters 5 and 6. I moved just the part about meeting her to Shenmue II. Actually Chapter 3 was on a train. The scenes take place inside a train. So Chapter 3 hasn’t been used at all. In total there are 11 chapters, and so I could properly visualize how they would fit together, the first thing I did was to make a novel. So that's the form I put them in, and I use it as a base reference. It's not meant to represent the exact scenarios for the game, though. I don't use it to decide "this event goes here, this quest goes here, this flag gets set here" and so on. It doesn’t directly dictate the scenarios for the game. Rather, it's one of the things I use to drive the scenarios for Shenmue. With Shenmue III, even if I forcibly took the story through to the end of Chapter 11, well... You see, I make decisions to keep or exclude various parts as I go along. Now, at this point I don't know whether Shenmue III will have 30 hours of play time or 60 hours, but if the story is forced to advance along, I could tell that this wouldn’t produce a satisfactory result as a game. So, although unfortunately the story won’t reach the end with Shenmue III, it was a decision I made for the sake of the game's quality.

6) Mon Aug 31, 2015 Kickstarter interview
http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=49016
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3/posts/1336892
Question : Can you tell us more about the composition stage?
Yu Suzuki : Shenmue III is based on the 11 chapters created 17 years ago (1998), and each chapter is set in different regions. For example, the first chapter was set in Yokosuka, second was set in Hong Kong and so on. However with Shenmue III it won't do to complete just one chapter's worth in one region, so I have restructured the underlying story to fit the budget.

Re: Camera

By instinct and fanboyism, I would say "Keep the same !!". But on the other hand, using the old-fashioned camera could be a lazy trap. Not because a question of field of vision but realism.

When Shenmue released on Dreamcast, we never experimented a camera closer than Ryo's in video games and that was exactly one of the many reasons of why Shenmue felt so immersive. Because it gave somehow consistency to the surrounding elements and Ryo himself. When you play GTA/Sleeping Dogs, you don't have this close relationship with your environment... until you enter an interior place and the camera moves closer to your character like RE4, because the game designers are aware of the trick.

Now that plenty of modern games use an even closer camera, Shenmue could be overtaken in that sense of realism race and look clunky to all of us if Yu opts for nostalgia to please the fans.
But again, assuming none of these games have the slow pace of Shenmue, an action TPS field of view could be pointless. I want to admire easily the scenery around me and identify the surrounding NPC without issues, is this camera really relevant for ? Not viewing directly the person in front of you has never really been a big issue in Shenmue as the game uses cinematographic point of view during conversations.

I really want the classic camera but they are professional. Whatever the team's choice, I would respect it and be happy.
