Re: Shenmue In The Media

A french national video game magazine has published a retrogaming review of Shenmue this month in its 11th issue written by someone who has never played it before, amazed by the reputation of the game.

I have not been able to scan as I only read it in the shop but the article has itself nothing particular anyway. It's only focused on two pages but was covered as one of the three biggest features of the issue by the magazine promotion, demonstrating how Shenmue is still well considered in a country where Shenmue has never been translated (terrible decision by Sega) and where Dreamcast and Xbox sales were very confidential.

http://nsa33.casimages.com/img/2014/09/19//140919080221145060.jpg

The article is pretty well written and mainly focused on the the art essence and the gameplay mechanics. Among the positive remarks, the writer is impressed by the radical approach of life routine, surprised by the quality of QTEs, qualifies the game as an "anti-AAA" and finishes his article by describing the beautiful end of the game.

The weaknesses have also been mentioned like the linearity or the abusive use of "go to point C before to go to point B awaiting to go to point A".

The only thing that has annoyed me is when he talked about Shenmue as a bad selling game which I still think it's a cliche.

Well, it's always a pleasure to see Shenmue still alive in the local medias.

Re: Newly found Shenmue art from the Sega Saturn era

About the Babel Tower, I found an old interview asking Yu Suzuki about the development of the demo that seems to have inspired the Kowloon part. Not that interesting as no mention to Shenmue there but still better than nothing.

Google-translated from french with some edits by mine :

http://images.eurogamer.net/2013/articles/1/6/8/3/2/3/5/140206890988.jpg/EG11/resize/300x-1/quality/80/format/jpg " We started working on this technical demonstration when I was asked to do something for the event Dreamcast. We started work on Monday, a week before the presentation of the console! To design this demo "Babel's Tower ', I was inspired to" Eight Man "and" Babel Niseil "(old Japanese animated) whom I am a fan. I prepared sketches and other sketches and storyboards [this is to draw the scene by scene sequence to see what happens] to define the "scenario". From that day, it took us ten days to complete this demo. "

"The team was composed of a designer and two programmers, and with this very small sample of people, we managed to set up this demonstration. If we had used a specialist cutscenes, it would have cost between 10 million and 20 million yen (roughly between 88,000 and 177,000 euros) for three minutes, but we managed to do it ourselves same without preparation. The Dreamcast is much easier to program than most machines, to the extent that everything is already in place (read there, libraries). Without being from the profession, it is even possible to understand its operation. If the demo includes about 1 million polygons per second, the machine is capable of achieving the triple without flinching. Obviously, it takes time and effort, but if you want to push it, the Dreamcast is capable of reaching 3 to 3.5 million polygons per second. But we are yet to see if the Model 3 is able to reach such a figure. Moreover, the Dreamcast is higher than the Model 3. When we designed the Dreamcast Model, we wanted to ensure that conversions between Model 3 and the Dreamcast is done easily without stress. I really think we have designed the machine that we will achieve this goal. It is true that the Dreamcast is a powerhouse for 3D but do not imagine it will not be able to handle the 2D. It can produce very large 2D. This machine is truly amazing. I can not wait for players to discover. "

It reminds me how Suzuki was a so talented developer. Hope he has not lost his skills and his sense of management since his glory days.

For those who are still interested by Suzuki as the developer, I possess a french article focused on his career from his child until Virtua Fighter 2, describing for example his relation with US army technologies or the way he approached the Virtua Fighter development. It's only by private message as it's a paid article.

Re: Shenmue 2 I want to share this map I made

If I remember well Lishao Tao, which is her surname, means "few students".
To learn it by yourself, you have to speak to the shaolin master when Xuying is bringing you to her home for the first time. This is the only moment where you can ask people around and learn some interesting things about her. You have all the day to do as she's waiting for you until the night in front of her apartment (lol).

Re: Yu Suzuki Interview: Shenmue, From Prototypes to Today

He only mentioned Shenmue V but it's still clear that investors who are ready to cover several episodes would be in his first list. That could explain why Shenmue III takes so long to see the daylight, Yu seems to be still highly ambitious and refuses any average project for the moment with Sega giving him a lot of freedom to make the right choice.

In fact, the problem has never been Sega but Yu Suzuki himself. At the other side, Sega is putting more and more pressure to Yu as the economic health of the company is getting worse, and Sega definitively need a big game other than Sonic to make money before it is too late.

So it's pretty sure to see Shenmue III as a videogame one day, with Suzuki or not at the head project. Now the question is when and at which level of quality ?

Re: why i need to help shenmue 3

I find some of his answers pretty exciting and ambitious.

"Well, things are really just getting started. I’m always looking to try new challenges , and so in order to take on as many of these as possible, the more budget we can collect the better."

"How much money will be raised is becoming increasingly of interest.

YS: Yes. It’s not that we will not be implementing an open world, but doing so lavishly will cause the budget to shoot up. On the other hand, since I am a creator, I’d like to try new mechanisms. I have set stretch goals with that balance in mind."

"I will say this: if we reach the $5 mil mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality.
At $10 million, it will truly have the features of an open world."

They are new systems, so naturally they need new names. The Rapport System will govern changes in Shenhua's actions depending on your conversations with or actions towards her. The "Character Perspective System" will highlight different characters personalities as they go through the story."

If we were to have 100 characters and split the budget among them, we’d be limited in terms of what we could do with each one; however, if we were to split that budget among just 10 characters, we could do a lot more with them.

He does not want only make Shenmue 3 but a great and innovative videogame that stands out from the concurrence.

Awesome Japan

https://youtu.be/GwphQVMDJvY?t=14m30s

For those who don't know, "Awesome Japan" are the company in charge of the Shenmue kickstarter.

Their staff : https://translate.google.fr/translate?sl=ja&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.awesome-japan.com%2Fabout%2F&edit-text=

Some statistics :
- Awesome Japan has "helped" 13 kickstarters prior to this (in a span of 11 months), only 7 were successful
- Only 1 videogame kickstarter ,Soul Knights (ex Nippon Ichi staff), barely met the goal of $60k with only 246 backers
- only 1550 backers and $170k for all their campaigns combined so far
- they had no native english speaker before this kickstarter apparently. All of their previous campaigns had significant spelling and translation mistakes

Re: Awesome Japan

From an outside point of view, Shenmue looks naturally boring. No fantasy and no transgression ; the two keys of mainstream success are absents. And on the Kickstarter page, neither power nor game design originality are put forward. The Shenmue concept does simply not exist. Even the artworks look awful (although I sincerely love Kenji Miyawaki's style).

Yesterday, I found this excellent video explaining what is Shenmue : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cmuc5ia3go

There is also the Yu's old intervew about Project Berkley which is still very interesting and enlightening.

Re: Kickstarter Redesigned!

I might be really naive, but I think anyone who's interested enough to look at the page will do their own investigating if they find the Kickstarter information insufficient. After all, it is about to become the second most funded Kickstarter of all time. That's worth investigating. There has to be something there that's interesting us enough to boost the game so much.

If they look at Youtube, they will probably think it's outdated, no more original, weak combat system, no fantasy, no transgression, an ordinary story of vengeance, no attractive visuals, etc...
Even if they investigate outside the kickstarter, It's pretty hard to know what exactly is Shenmue. Even most of the fans can't explain it convincingly.

Re: Eurogamer - What Makes Shenmue's Open World So Special?

Shenmue 2's Hong Kong isn't the biggest of open worlds, and unlike the Yokosuka suburb that preceded it, it can hardly claim to be the densest.

Considering these were pretty much the first open world games, that comment is a bit unfair. Of course they are no longer the biggest, but at the time they were.

The author isn't talking about Shenmue as a game from a past point of view but as a modern game, and that's why this article is way more interesting than any other articles explaining why Shenmue was so revolutionary at its time (that no one cares).

Re: How much "magic" will be in Shenmue III? (spoiler Shenmu

If you think magic is awkward, why not to see Shenmue from a geopolitical point of view ? Magic is just supposed to be the equivalent of the new nuclear power with powers looking for them, including one of the most important mafias of the world. It's still the story of life.

I really can't see Shenmue turning into a world where this magic is easily mastered by Ryo. If the worst comes to the worst, don't forget all these things can be well and slowly implanted if the story is written with the utmost care. It's just a question of how to introduce them.

Re: I replayed Shenmue II disc 4 last night

Beyond what has been said, these things stick me :

- Relation between Bailu Village and China Emperors, supposing a lot of marvelous (and secret) stuff to discover.

- The mountains of death described in the right painting. " Those who set foot in these mountains have ever returned. " It smells a Shenmue 3 intermediate location with a lot of action and tension moments. I wonder if the "high ground battle" feature is related.
http://nsa37.casimages.com/img/2015/07/07/150707114637212257.jpg

- 50 people live in Bailu Village.

- Assuming Shenmue 3 begins straight away after the S2 end, just imagine this with Unreal Engine 4 :

Re: Shenmue III Kickstarter closing in on 4.5 million!

See, i know i am probably in the minority here, but the free battles were my least exciting bits of the game. I prefer detective work, exploring, mini games, QTE sequences and cut scenes. The free battles aere just OK to me. Like the 70 man battle, or the Beverly Hills Wharf fiasco, or the black suits in the Yellow Head Building. I could leave most of that.

One more good reason to enhance the combat system, right ? Apart for VS fighting fans, Shenmue battle system is hard to handle smoothly while for example Virtua Fighter 5 is much more accessible and pleasing without sacrifice the gameplay depth.
