The Naming of Phantom River Stone | Translation Analysis

The mysterious mirrors that lie at the heart of the Shenmue mystery were crafted from a substance with an equally mysterious-sounding name: "Phantom River stone".

Now, although its name is Phantom River stone in the English Shenmue games, in fact this differs slightly from the Japanese name in the games.

This post looks at what it is called in the Japanese version of Shenmue.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I'm really hoping that, in Shenmue 3, they won't be using Japanese character variants in Chinese writing, as they did in Shenmue 2.
I'm talking about stuff like this:
https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EDwimdjz00c/WAcu6yPBdBI/AAAAAAAAA1Q/x5Anr2Z2z50vr-QFExhgKIN5cVrqDAUMwCPcB/s320/BuyingMap.png
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n1V25Gtav_k/VPi_DSdfTPI/AAAAAAAAFKo/PKgfT-lDrEI/s1600/05.jpg

Notice, in the fist pic, the 図 instead of 圖, and, in the second pic, on the red sign on the right, the 広 instead of 廣.

Now, when I played Shenmue 2, all those years ago, on the Dreamcast, I didn't notice any of that. But a lot has happened in the meantime and one of the things that happened is that I've learned Chinese, learned about China, lived and studied there and travelled all over the country. And while this means that now I'll be able to appreciate lots of new details in Shenmue 2 (waiting for the HD remaster to replay it, hopefully, not in vain) and in Shenmue 3, it also means that Japanese character variants in China stick out like a sore thumb. That's what happened when I came across these screenshots. And there are probably more examples. I'm pretty sure I've also seen a 仏 instead of 佛 (Buddha) in some screenshot too.

Frankly, I think they really dropped the ball on this one and find it very odd that, considering the fact that they even used real-world weather data for Yokosuka in 86, 87 (which, while a cool story, adds nothing to the experience, to be honest), they went ahead and used Japanese character variants for writing in China.

Also, since, as far as we know, Shenmue 3 will be set entirely in mainland China, they should use the simplified writing system which is used over there (thanks, commies!). For instance, the above-mentioned 図, which in Hong Kong (where they use traditional characters) should be 圖, in Guilin should be 图. The 広, which in Hong Kong should be 廣, in Guilin should be 广 (keeping in mind, however, that traditional characters are often still used in mainland China in certain situations, as in temple signs, paintings and all sorts of art, and, as a general rule, anything that should feel traditional).

I mean, c' mon, I'd say that using the proper writing system in the game's setting is far from a small detail, so I hope they won't disappoint in that regard with Shenmue 3.

Interesting point that I hadn't been aware of. By the way, does the "Man Mo" found on various signs around the streets approximate the Cantonese pronunciation?
Thanks! Love all of your translation analysis you regularly put out, by the way.
Well, I've never really learned Cantonese, but rather Mandarin, but I'm pretty sure I've seen, in some Cantonese context before, 文武 (which, in Mandarin, would be "Wen Wu)" written as "Man Mo" (and maybe also as "Man Mou"?), so it seems about right to me.
Having said that, this reminds me of something that now I remember having mentioned in another thread, back when Shenmue 3's locations were made known...

Baisha (白沙; lit. White Sand ) and Bailu (白鹿; lit. White Deer ) are both the Mandarin reading of those characters (as seen in that stretch goal artwork), but Choubu (鳥舞; lit. Bird Dance ) is definitely not Mandarin and I'm pretty sure it's a Japanese reading. In Mandarin, it would read "Niaowu".
I find it very odd that they are naming two of the towns according to its Mandarin reading and then one of them according to its Japanese reading, as all three of them are in China. This inconsistency is somewhat troubling and it does make me worried that in Shenmue 3, once again, we may get Japanese character variants in China...
However, since I don't know Japanese, I don't actually know what Ys Net has been calling those towns in Japanese. I'm only going by what we get in the translated press releases and interviews. So maybe they've actually been using the Japanese reading for all three of them, but, for some reason, whoever translated it into English, decided to only keep the Japanese reading in Choubu and use the Mandarin reading for Baisha and Bailu?
Switch?

EDIT: Funnily enough, I missed an even more obvious Japanese character in that second pic I posted. There's a big red 実 there where there it should be, in fact, a 實, as that is the traditional Chinese form used in Hong Kong. So, in that one screenshot, we have two Japanese character variants (広 and 実 in place of 廣 and 實) on the shop signs. Which makes me think that, for all the Chinese writing, the developers simply used a Japanese program without taking into account the fact that Japanese uses certain variants not used anywhere in China. Seems pretty negligent, if you ask me, especially in a game with such minute attention to detail in its other aspects.

Re: Shenmue - 360º Panoramas

Oculus Rift owners could potentially use LiveViewRift , which I think is freeware and is available for Windows and Mac. Check it out here: http://soft.viarum.com/liveviewrift/

Here's a demo video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUeBBUfSGyw

Note: Jump to minute 8 to see equirectangular panorama being tested.

In general there are promising web plugins (like 'WebVR') that could be compatible with a wide array of VR devices. Try this demo and leave feedback if possible: https://krpano.com/tours/corfu/

WebVR is an experimental JavaScript API that provides access to Virtual Reality devices, such as the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Samsung Gear VR, or Google Cardboard, in your browser. The WebVR API is currently available in Firefox Nightly builds, in Chrome 56+ for Android and experimental builds of Chromium for Windows, and in the Samsung Internet Browser for Gear VR.

Re: Kickstarter Update #65: Dev room update

Unclarity, that's the problem here. Either they continue their testing phase while they left the artist team working quietly alone, or they update more or less regularly their builds with the last charadesign/clothing models available. A bit of both? Makes no sense imo or the production may be less structured than I was thinking.

If they opted for the second procedure, I cannot hide my disappointment here. Regarding a "A rank" character, I was expecting better after one and a half year of development. So I will persist to think these changes are only the consequence of opportunities inside the studio, with YSnet continuing to hide the true updated models from us.
Thank you! I see what you are trying to say now, but I don't think there's grounds to worry. I feel they probably want to show the latest version of Ryo in the update videos, even if he isn't quite ready yet.

At this stage in development, I think they would be focusing on getting the world built and the main events scripted and focusing less manpower on stuff like the models. They're not important in the development and testing environment.
But even if development isn't as far along as we think, the worst that will happen is that the game will be delayed; something a lot of people seem to expect anyway. My only concern is good looking characters in promotional material such as trailers and gameplay demos, but I'm probably worrying over nothing as I'm sure they'll sort something out specifically for that if they haven't already.

Yu cares far too much to let anything subpar reach the final game. I recently watched that making of Shenmue documentary again after it was re-posted here and there was entire meetings for how the flames in a campfire looked. I'm confident that we'll see some fantastic models soon and that Shenmue III will look amazing.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

I explained this last night during the stream, but at the time, I wasn't totally sure of myself.

The "MJQ" in MJQ Jazz Bar stands for Modern Jazz Quartet, which was a very popular band in the 50's. Therefore, the full name would be "Modern Jazz Quartet Jazz Bar," which is obviously quite redundant.

Anecdotes About Yu Suzuki From Yuji Naka | DenFamiNicoGamer

In February, SEGA legend Yuji Naka was a special guest on an informal talk show streamed live online by the Japanese site DenFamiNicoGamer.

http://i.imgur.com/Io4LbL0.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/g5pt52Im.jpg

Some of the inside stories he shared about his early days at SEGA are about Yu Suzuki, who was working there at the time. In particular, one previously-unheard episode ended up with the two not speaking for a couple of years!

I've translated these to English in this blog post:

(APRIL FOOLS)Kickstarter Update #66: Reimagining Shenmue III

Greetings backers!
The time is upon us again to bring you a new update and this time we thought we’d announce the new format that Shenmue III will take and show you a few sneak peeks.

We want Shenmue III to reach as many people as possible and after minutes of market research, we realised that people no longer enjoy full-on console experiences. It is obvious that gamers today prefer casual experiences and it is for this reason we have decided to reimagine Shenmue III for phones and tablets.

So ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, the new Shenmue III:
https://i.gyazo.com/9e7bdd912305ca2a7d975acd2f7b724a.png

Here is the main screen. It shows the character you currently have selected and their current action. At the end of the timer, the character will be able to perform another action. Over the course of an action, the character will send you push notifications about their journey, continuing the story of Shenmue. If you are the impatient type, you can buy a booster using the ingame currency ‘Shenmoola’ in order to complete the journey faster.

Speaking of Shenmoola, we’re happy to confirm the return of Tomato Mart as the ingame store! Here you can spend your Shenmoola on boosters, arcade credits, extra playable characters and other perks:
https://i.gyazo.com/96a5aed87baa65cabb354eaa337aaf90.png

Let’s take a closer look!
https://i.gyazo.com/a30e5cc35b4e01c78b0dfe2bf8266532.png
As you can see, you can spend 100 Shenmoola on a can of Jet Cola in order to complete a journey twice as fast.

Shenmoola can be earned as a reward for completing quests, or it can be bought with real money. The choice is up to you!

That’s about all we have for now, but we hope you’re as excited as we are for this new stage in Shenmue history. Shenmue III will be launching on the App Store and Google Play Store this December.

Thank you for reading
- The Awesome Japan Team

Once again, happy April, Dojo!

Shenmue Realism: Bamboo Fountain in the Hazuki's Garden

I've written a post about the bamboo fountain in the corner of the garden at the Hazuki residence. It's just another part of Shenmue that doesn't have any role to play in the main story, but it adds so much to the atmosphere.

http://i.imgur.com/a9e2gkE.jpg

The ornamental pond in the corner of the garden at the Hazuki residence is an oasis of tranquility. Flowering water lilies bob gently on the surface, rising and falling as Japanese carp glide lazily by underneath. Birds twitter in the trees and the water trickles continuously into a bamboo water fountain.

Every so often, the bamboo spout of the fountain pivots over, spilling its collected water into the pond, and makes a distinctive "clonk" as it returns to its original position. The sound can be heard from other parts of the garden as Ryo walks around.

Let's look at how the fountain works, what its name is in Japanese and finally some in-game footage of the fountain in motion.

Yu Suzuki Interview: Champion Boxing, Shenmue [ENG]

I've posted up a translation of an interview with Yu Suzuki that was published in January by Famitsu.com to commemorate the release of a new games collection by Sega that has ties to some of his old arcade hits.

In it, Suzuki gives his feelings towards Champion Boxing, and also talks briefly about Shenmue III, revealing how the Dreamcast console is playing its part in the development.

It was my idea to send Yu a fruit basket. I also floated the idea of sending wine but Yu seems to have the alcohol covered.

In order to send the basket we need to contact someone who works on the project. I was thinking we could ask Alimn if we could send the team to say thanks for the hard work. Who can get into contact with Alimn?

Kowloon's ending was extremely climactic, I was shocked to realize that it wasn't the end of the game back when I played it. Too bad they spoiled it for themselves by reading the strategy guide...

I wonder if they will like Guilin... It might just be my favorite part about the game personally. But they do seem rather impatient and just want to get to point B... They might ruin it for themselves if they start rushing through it and skipping the optional dialogue... Hell, I can see them skipping the non-optional dialogue as well.

Re: Shenmue III Update #67: Developer Room Update 3

This doesn't look like shenmue. I wholeheartedly disagree with the people that say that it does. This is what the character of a Jade Empire sequel should look like, not shenmue. This proves my fears that the texture work, with all it's "dirty" and "gritty" details will no be present in the characters. That classic look with the baked in shadows and lighting will be gone.

It looks like it's made out of putty.

This is what they are going for: http://img14.deviantart.net/a055/i/2012/288/2/b/__jade_empire___player_characters_non_posable_by_lezisell-d5hut4u.jpg

Instead of http://shenmue.neoseeker.com/w/i/shenmue/9/91/Jianmin.jpg

For shenmue to look like shenmue, the facial textures have to be handcrafted. You cannot rely on polygonal geometry and lighting for the look. That's why you need to draw it in. They are not doing that. It will not look the same.

It's NOT the same. I will not cry over it. At this point I'm still just glad to be getting the game...though I am very sad that we are loosing the traditional look. Much like the title, it will be shenmue, with a different font.

*Sigh*... Oh well.

As far as the styling is concerned, I'm ok with it. I wanted some style, as it's in keeping with character design. Ryo has always had spiky stylized hair, for example.

Re: Shenmue III Update #67: Developer Room Update 3

To all the people complaining about critiques, go home. Don't come to a forum, a place of discussion, if you can't take anything but positive praise. No one here is decrying the entire endeavor, we are simply stating that it doesn't look like the game that we expected. There is nothing wrong with that. I don't care if you like the direction it's going. I don't care if you like this style. I don't care if YOU like what you see. Right now, I'm not fully sold.

I don't like how the character model looks. I'm still playing the game. I still donated money. I'm still going to give my opinion. It's an opinion many here share. GTFO if you don't like it and can't accept anything but glowing and positive statements.

To me, it doesn't look the way I envisioned. It makes me sad the same way that Wind waker made me sad back in the day. Still a great game, but did not look the way I wanted Zelda to look.

I hope that overtime the characters revert back to the previous palette and presentation. What gives me hope is that, as many people have stated already, that model doesn't fit in the environments we've seen so far. There's a clash. I'll just have to wait and see how it progresses.

You have made the situation worse by threatening bans without justification when you're just as emotional as the people you threaten. If you're going to make threats and ultimatums state the base line. If you're going to moderate then don't call posts bullshit without stating what you find to be bullshit. You talk about how people aren't comprehending people's posts, but you are doing an awful job explaining your posts, making them easy to be misinterpreted. Re: Shenmue III Update #67: Developer Room Update 3

People who aren't satisfied with the model, can you elaborate in detail why? Most of the posts I've read were "It doesn't feel like Shenmue" or "It's too cartoony"... I'm trying to understand why people would think so, and the only thing I can see is the skin shader being a little plasticky... That's pretty much it. And that is something that can easily be improved.

It's all subjective, since it's a matter of taste, but for me:
Bad skin shader (also hair) and a little bit too much over the top facial expression (very cartoony), and body proportions (really, he looks like hugo from SF, and that's a comically big character, not even dou niu has those kind of proportions) but mostly the fear that this type of look is what they are aiming for (I know we still don't know, but it's pretty much the most "tangible" thing we actually have to talk about as for today).

I don't understand a lot of people saying they love the character, "this is what was always supposed to look like", and then saying "obviously it's still in development and they'll fix it"... Is it the way it should look like or is it very early wip ??

Re: Will Slot Machines return in Shenmue III?

I'm still not understanding the slot house's appeal.
Personally, it's just a nice bit of extra texture to the world. Do I visit the slot houses often in Shenmue/Shenmue II? Nah, but it's nice that they're there.

Like I said in my earlier post, a beat up slot machine in the warehouse arcade in III would be nice; if only because it would add to the lived-in feel.

Re: Michael Huber comments on no Shenmue 3 at E3

So maybe a trailer is still possible even if they are not there?

i was thinking of this possibility, they never stated "Shenmue 3 is skipping E3 2017"
something about it might be showcased like behind the scene footage or something along the announcement of Shenmue 1&2 Remasters?

of course it's just a possibility right now.
Be careful with this train of thought, guys. It's really, really unlikely YSnet were playing games with their wording on the statement about not appearing at E3.

Agree.

Thanks to Switch, we have also a direct traduction of the Japanese original statement.

https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hK2eBK_q2S8/WSvQ5aKLuDI/AAAAAAAACW4/DrgKtnQC3rYsTEcs6veO0YVv_ww9W0IpwCLcB/s1600/message.png

We could think they speak about a physical presence at E3, but the traduction from Switch is slightly different from the english version. They are not devoting themselves to development in June, they are devoting themselves to the development, period.

That said... a little hope doesn't hurt.

Re: Genesis games in Shenmue 3?

Hello.. This is a Picture for the Dreamcast Game 'Yu Suzuki Game Works'

https://www.video-games-museum.com/en/screenshots/Dreamcast/2/36332-menu-Yu-Suzuki-Game-Works-Vol.-1.png

I have looked extensively at all the game files of Shenmue and Shenmue 2 and comparied them to Yu Game works. This game was released shortly after Shenmue 2, but the Emulation files for;
Space Harrier: Shenmue1
Hang On: Shenmue 1
After Burner: Shenmue 2
OutRun: Shenmue 2
are EXACTLY THE SAME FILES !.. Which logically means that Power Drift ' should' be in Shenmue 3
(But since it will be created in Unreal Engine theres no reason that all of the games shouldnt be in Shenmue3)

There is clear evidence that After Burner was originally planned for Shenmue 1, and I suspect with a deeper understanding of the Shenmue 'FirstRead.bin' file that it 'might' be possible to switch one of the other Arcade games with PowerDrift to work ingame BUT each game has its own specific emulation and its certainly not a copy and paste job to play any megadrive/genesis game.

The only games that would be featured in Shenmue3 will be the ones Yu created and has total licence of, which I suspect doesnt include Virtua Fighter

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

I've put up a blog post about the announcement on Phantom River Stone:
http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/06/shenmue-3-rescheduled-for-2018.html

I made a slightly fuller translation of Yu's comment from the video. The official captions are fine so far as meaning but I felt they lost a little bit of the nuance.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

Interesting thread on Reddit that just popped up and caught my eye. The Star Citizen Sub Reddit are praising how upfront and genuine Yu Suzuki and YsNet have been in regards to the delay:

https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/6g109g/if_sq42_gets_changed_to_a_2018_release_i_hope_cig/

When you think about it, they are 100% correct. CIG (Cloud Imperium Games - the people behind Star Citizen) have delayed the game (and the pre-alpha content drops) over and over, which is fine and people expect it, but they always do it at the very last minute with a note on the forums etc. YsNet handled this perfectly with grace and confidence (even though Yu did look a bit worried/disappointed in the video :P). With the whole Awesome Japan craziness, it's very nice to see a complete 180 where we hear a direct statement from Yu himself.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

To be honest, in hindsight, the original Dec. release date seems all the more puzzling now.

I suspect that Suzuki & co originally low-balled the backer minimum ($2M), almost expecting to make an interactive movie of sorts. The backing then quickly took a legendary turn, with the team now tasked to meet an almost impossible release date. At this point…when do you announce a delay? Certainly not towards the beginning, as the “press” would have jumped all over it.
(I can see the “Shenmue Trouble: Suzuki asks for patience (and money)” headline already.)

All in all, I’d say the timing here was as close to “perfect” as possible.

Then again, perhaps they really did try to meet this impossible release date for the longest time (sleeping at the office/ etc/ etc), before finally giving in to reason and planning ahead accordingly. Who knows.

One thing is for sure: this entire KS has been nothing short of a fascinating experiment.
Whatever happens, it’s been one hell of an exciting ride. For everyone.

…Only thing missing now is that fabled HD remaster announcement ;)

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

I found another crazy little detail in Shenmue II. Something that is so ridiculously easy to overlook, it wonders me why they even bothered to put the extra effort into it. In short it's typical Shenmue. And I love it!

The game shuffles around the textures for the cassette tapes in the trash can every time you come to this point.
So the contents of the can will always appear slightly different.

Re: Shenmue 3 & E3 2017 - UPDATE - Confirmed will NOT be at

If there is one person within the community whos work gets overlooked, and doesnt get nowhere near enough praise as he should, its Kiske.

There are a lot of people who do great work for Shenmue, but he really is one of the silent heroes since Shenmue 3 became a reality. His passion is unmatched, and his ideas and support across all of the Shenmue community sites is something that is to be absolutely commended.

Just wanted to give him is due live and respect.

Bravo sir, and thank you for so much hard work! =D> =D> =D> =D>

Re: Will Shenmue 3 Suck?

Depends on a few things. I reckon I'll be extremely disappointed and find it mediocre, but obviously I'm hoping it'll at least be as good as the second. I think I liked it for different reasons than most people though.

No doubt it'll be the most divisive of the series. There will be those who love it for what it is, those who love it just because it's Shenmue III, and I can defo see a number of drawn out debates on here.

I suppose the good thing is that there are certain people who seem like they'd be impervious to any potential disappointment, which at the very least means it's a game that will be enjoyed by fans.

The bad thing though is I don't think my first playthrough will survive the constant nitpicking.

Ok. I messed up with the logo I've posted before. I'm sorry.
There is a higher version of it. It just depends from where you download it (computer or mobile phone).

This one should be far better (image is 2048x470) and looks better:

Re: Kickstarter Update #69: June Report

Last but not least, can we assume that if SEGA addresses the licensing issues for Shenmue HD, it will allow YsNet to use those licensed brands in Shenmue 3 as well?

What do think, thoughts? ( )
Hmm interesting thought, but if I'm honest I don't think SEGA really have any intention to associate or assist with Shenmue III any more than they have to.

Sometimes I wish I could be able to listen to what's going on in SEGA's and YsNet offices.

Kickstarter Update #71: Gamescom 2017 Update #2

For the first time I feel disappointed by them. They put us into hype mode about saying the game will be shown at Gamescom but now its no demo or videos?

So will that mean pictures? Like a substantial amount? Cause why tell us so in advance like that only not show off something substantial?

At this point we really need to see some new content. They delayed the game (granted totally welcomed by that) but now we need to see the counter to the delay with some fresh content.
Ya I really hope they have a ton of new screen shots..
My confidence is in them but just show us something solid to gawk at please!

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I don't know exactly, but as a person who grew up in a country where anime is mainstream since about the late 70s i've seen a lot of stuff from that period during my childhood, and in some way now i'm really nostalgic about Showa era.

I think that one anime that could really fit here is Ranma, because from a lot of points of view it's basically Shenmue the Animation:

-Martial arts
-Late 80s
-Ranma and the (motherless) Tendos family living in an big old-fashioned house with a dojo
-Heavy Japanese/Chinese duality
-Lots of urban slice of life scenes
-A lot of Chinese classic culture
-Midi-based soundtrack inspired by mixed Chinese and Japanese influences

A lot of these tracks could actually be part of the Shenmue ost and nobody would notice the difference :D

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

Upon closer inspection it looks that the models are based off the Passports ones....

Yet they somehow managed to make them look ugly, maybe are those dead eyes, maybe in motion they will look fine, time will tell.
