Re: Shenmue Undub [Japanese Speech Mod] [CD-R 80/99/GDI]

There is a glimmer of hope with respect to this: as part of the project work is being done on attempting to fit the revised Undub onto standard CD-Rs, while maintaining the original audio quality.

I definitely don't wanna put any pressure on you guys, but is there an estimated time of delivery for this, however nebulous it may be? Because so far all the CD-R 99s I've managed to find have turned out to be utter shite, and I may be about to give up and play the original instead :???:.

Here's a quick update on the project status: the project team has recently succeeded in creating full-audio game images that fit onto 80-minute CD-Rs. After some final minor development work these will soon be put through a period of beta testing on real hardware to make sure they work as expected.

About a delivery estimate: it's not possible to be specific yet. At its broadest - definitely within 2018 and before Shenmue III! It will largely come down to whether any major issues arise during beta testing. If it goes smoothly then within the first half of the year should be realistic.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I don't know if this has already been mentioned elsewhere, but I just noticed that Shenmue III was included in the Unreal Engine blog's list of UE4 games to look forward to in 2018. https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/the-gaming-industry-gets-set-for-an-unreal-2018 The blog entry itself is an aggregate of lists from IGN, Gamespot and Polygon. No new information, but it's nice to see that Epic has confidence in Shenmue III being a good representation of UE4.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

correct me if im wrong but from what ive read here over the years, this upcoming game (s3) will not be the end of ryo's adventure or shenmue. i was wondering, does anyone know what future chapter YS has in mind for the ending? s4? s5?

After having the game saved by passionate fans and not being open and transparent about the Kickstarter (Sony wanting to judge reactions more than fans 'saving' the franchise) I think YS has a damn cheek not to finish the story in this game (S3) If this bombs like the other two then theres little to no hope of another Kickstarter being successful. After having the game saved by the fans I feel he should end the series with this game.
If you're assuming what all the fans want is just a closure to the story, you're wrong.
I want a quality Shenmue game, and it can't be of good quality if Suzuki rushes the story and cut a lot of the content just to finish it up at Shenmue 3.

The chances of the game being a financial success are slim. If the story isn't finished up now, I doubt it will. Yes the kickstarter was successful, broke records etc, but how many non fans are interested in this game. Very few. It's taken over a decade to get the third, it should be ended. Also looking at the kickstarter updates it will be another decade before the game is released.
What would you prefer?

an excellently paced Shenmue game that follows Yu Suzuki original story outline, but not exactly providing closure?

Or...

A Shenmue game with terribly rushed pacing and cut corners, that sacrifices god-know-how-many story chapters just to 'End it' and provide closure

I know I'm picking the former. I don't mind if Shenmue's story is never resolved if the alternative meant we'd get a shitty closure.

The friends of Ringo Ishikawa

Hello, guys. If i'm breaking some law you'll just delete this post, i suppose.

I'm currently in development of the game heavenly inspired by Shenmue and Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari. It's an open world game about japanese delinquents focused on story and small things that don't do much but matters a lot in the end (like feeding a cat in Shenmue).

So i'm just looking for players who could be interested.

Here's a greenlight trailer i made a year ago and some screenshots.

Shenmue Gaiden: A Christmas Story

Hey Shenmue community,

Today, i bring you the latest instalment from the Shenmue Gaiden series. This chapter was suppose to be released during the Christmas holiday. However, personal commitments along with my job didn't allow me to finish the project on time. :(

I decided to still release the game however as the alternative would be to wait until Christmas 2018. Fortunately, this is the year of Shenmue, so hopefully, this is the first game of many to come out in 2018

If you enjoyed the first Shenmue Gaiden Christmas game, chances are you're going love this one. I really wanted this game to over deliver in terms of value. Therefore, it has a ton of fighting, tons of character interactions, tons of cameo/random appearances, toy capsules, tomato stores and much more.

Play time is around 2 hours and 30 minutes . There's alot of story and text in this game. I recommend everyone take breaks in between days, especially if you're not use to reading so much text. (I took several breaks personally lol). Alternatively, use the save function and come back to it later.

Keep in mind, this game is very light-hearted and fun game and is not suppose to be taken seriously at all. You'll probably realise this once you see the cameos and how events play out. Sit back, enjoy and have a great time.

https://i.imgur.com/09Bjmsu.png

http://i.imgur.com/cVIzoEH.png

https://i.imgur.com/C09EMTd.jpg

The festive season is finally upon us and you've been invited to spend the next four days in Dobuita at Hazuki residence. This enjoyment doesn't last long however as Christmas is thrown into complete chaos. Scrooge is back and is now in possession of two important Shenmue items. He also has an army of fighters at his disposal. It's up to you and Santa to recruit a team of capable individuals to confront Scrooge and save Christmas once and for all

A new threat lurks in the shadows and is said to be the strongest fighter of them all.

https://i.imgur.com/RtczTxs.jpg

There is a 3rd threat in the game other than Scrooge and his henchman. This threat promises to destroy Christmas once and for all.

Like the last game, YOU are the player. Once you arrive in Dobuita, the game will ask you to enter your name. From that point on, all NPCS and character will refer to you by your actual name.

http://i.imgur.com/S7AyfkI.png

I strongly recommend you enter your proper name here or whatever nickname you like to be called in real life. By doing so, the game will feel much more personal as you interact with the characters and progress through the story.

http://i.imgur.com/P2uIdnE.png
Dynamic Choices

The previous Shenmue Gaiden entry had choices in its dialog. However, the responses were very similar regardless of what you chose. This new entry has around 80% choice variation in its responses. That means you can play through the game entirely as a nice guy or bad guy or somewhere in between. This should hopefully spice things up and make replay ability more enjoyable.

https://i.imgur.com/chJzrId.jpg

The game also features Toy Capsule machines, access to the Yokosuka Harbour and access to a limit number of stores.

Bugs / Glitches
Due to a limited amount of time, i was unable to address all the bugs and glitches in the game. I'll fix them with a patch down the road. In the mean time, you may run into the following issues.

Sound Issues - At certain points of the game, the sound will lower or get higher. If this happens, raise the volume on your speaker or adjust the sound in the options menu (right click). Tends to happen on the 4th day.

Menus - Some menu buttons are not functioning as they should. Will be updated at a later date.
I've managed to find good consistent results with the game using the following settings.

https://i.imgur.com/6EoXNUK.jpg

Adjust how you see fit.

SCREEN RESOLUTION (VERY IMPORTANT)
This game was created with a screen resolution of 1920 width and 1080 height. The game should look like the following screen shot. If it looks stretch or out of place, you may have to adjust you monitor's screen resolution. You can do this by right clicking on the desktop and pressing screen resolution. (Set resolution to 1920 * 1080).

Good Resolution

https://i.imgur.com/MHfu0HV.jpg

Bad Resolution

https://i.imgur.com/ggS18Eb.jpg

http://i.imgur.com/PSOxpcR.png

Do not skip transitions or click at a fast pace due to impatience. The game has a deliberate pace. At some points you may think the game is hanging or taking long to load. If this happens, an event is about to occur. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

Also play in full screen.

Other issues

I need to clean up some of the portraits, adjust the voice clips to sound more consistent and not super loud.

I also left some save files in the game. Dont load them if you have not already finished the game
If you come across any other issues, please let me know

Patches / Fixes

i'll be applying various patches over the coming weeks to address the sound issues. I also want to try and shorten some segments as some parts of the game can drag on. More voice clips will also be added.

Here we go people. This is my LATE Christmas present to you all. I hope you find some joy and fun in this game. I had a blast exploring my imagination and creating it. Here's to an amazing Shenmue year for all of us..

Interview with Shenmue 2 Designer: Norikazu Hirai

SEGA recently published an interview with one of the designers who worked on Shenmue II, Norikazu Hirai.

I've translated the part where he talks about his Shenmue work. It turns out that he is the person who was responsible for designing the Sword of Seven Stars. He also reveals that Yu Suzuki's original concept for it was actually a "Dagger" of Seven Stars!

Re: Shenmue 2 on CXBX-R

Did you do something special to get 3D visuals to work? I downloaded the latest nightly build yesterday and I can see the logos from startup, but the title screen and afterwards is all black. The intro has sound and the AM2 / XBOX logos in the corner but it's basically the upper left corner of your video only. The compatibility list says it only works in Wireframe right now. Input does work though, I can press start on the title screen. Based on the change log they fixed it a few days ago.

Useful tip for anyone who hasn't used CXBX before: The emulator doesn't accept disk images. You need to extract the game data to a folder (unless something can mount them?) and run default.xbe from the root.

Wow, this is pretty amazing. I can't believe it is full speed and sound is working!
CXBX doesn't have to emulate most of the hardware, so good performance on a weak PC is not too surprising. The games were all built around Microsoft technologies, (DirectX, etc.) and the XBOX ran on x86 hardware, so CXBX just adapts the games to use Windows equivalents of the same libraries. I think they're starting to emulate stuff now, but their original approach will work well for many cases.

I uploaded a video with some games running on CXBX-R

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2Gooj5JmpM

at 0:59 you can see Shenmue Running on it.

You'll need to hex edit the Xbe in order to let the game get rid of the black overly.

Select Shenmues .xbe
find 000000BF 7B142E3E 8FC2F5BC 9A
and replace it by FFFFFFFF 7B142E3E 8FC2F5BC 9A
and the game will render just fine

Shenmue II Special Trailer HD Remaster

I've always wanted an HD version of the "Shenmue II Special Trailer" that Sega released at some point in the middle of 2001. I remember back then IGN usually had 640x480 versions of most of the trailers, but those have been lost to time. The only remaining copy that I can find is the low res-version on Disc 4 when you place it in a PC. This project was to remaster the trailer in HD.

Version 1 completed trailer:
https://youtu.be/oRhlxgtr1ps

My primary video source has been Mr357's Shenmue 2 movie, but there are several clips that are either from the wrong time of day, different in the final game (the lighthouse scene in Beverly Hills Wharf for example), or just aren't part of the 9 hours that Mr357 recorded. (7pm night transitions, Fengmei scene in the diner, etc.) Also, the font used in the trailer doesn't appear to be publicly available. A font search engine found me one that's close, but as you can see some letters are slightly different.

There are also some interesting differences to be noted in the scenes that do match. For example, the scene with Yuan and Duck Race Man in the basement of the warehouse, one of the random henchmen is different in the trailer. In some cases characters blink at different times.

This project has given me new appreciation for the time and effort required to produce a trailer, and it make sense now how time consuming it would've been for YSnet to produce a Shenmue 3 trailer for MAGIC this year. Putting together what you've seen so far took over 8 hours, and it's less than 2 minutes long. There are several scenes where things are chopped together not only in small bits, but out of order that they appear in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if the original version of this trailer took someone a few weeks to make.

I'm hoping to have a finished "draft" of the base trailer using the clips I have already have finished in a few weeks, then I can go back and replace some of the stuff that's inaccurate. I might also consider using something like SVP to interpolate the source footage to 60fps, but my current video editor actually only does 30. (There's a newer version that does 60, I just haven't had a reason to buy it yet.) I wanted to post the WIP here in case anyone's interested in helping to improve the accuracy at all. I can replace the font for example, if someone either finds the original or wants to recreate the existing text as vectors. Or if someone is interested in recording more 1080p source footage, it would save me time. Either way, I plan to finish this since it's over half way done.

What do you think?

Corey Marshall currently set to record VO in late May

Thanks to mjq jazz bar for finding this out. It seems to have slipped through the net.

A few days ago Corey posted a status on Facebook, and a fan asked him when VO recording for the English dub begins. Corey replied that currently the plan is for him to begin in late May.

While it's possible things could slip, seems the intention is to begin recording ASAP.

Re: Shenmue Modding Knowledge

Shenmue Mods has a new home and it is now on Github: https://github.com/Shenmue-Mods

This new platform provides great versatility and accessibility to (contribute, that is) add new and edit existing resources of knowledge (compared to an obscure and rigid Google Site). The content looks prettier and more "professional", too.

The first post of this thread has been edited to reflect the new changes.

|Shenmue 3 Hype| Shenmue Combo/FREE Battle Compliation

phpBB [video]

In celebration for Shenmue III coming out this year(God willing), I've compiled up a combo video showing off the amazing Virtua Fighter FREE Battle System featured in Shenmue I and Shenmue II. Let's get sweaty!

Re: |Shenmue 3 Hype| Shenmue Combo/FREE Battle Compliation

All the more unfortunate that this system will be gone in Shenmue 3.
C'mon, you know it couldn't fly as-is today. Relying on d-pad inputs alone just doesn't make sense at this point.

When you factor in the VF roots, it's a combat system exceeding 20 years old. It's still fun to play in the context of when it came out, but in a new game it definitely needs renovation.
Eh, it's not as archaic as you're making it out to be. For one, they don't have to rely on D-pad inputs now, analog works well as it does in the Virtua Fighter games.

It only needed a bit of polish, better camera system here and better tracking there, otherwise the base of the system is extremely solid, and I honestly can't think of any hand-to-hand combat that is better. (Aside maybe from God Hand).

Re: New Shenmue Dojo

Thank you Yama for everything. Your contributions to the Dojo over the years have been considerable and I wish you the best in managing the new business. :) I still remember the depressing atmosphere that would at times cast a shadow over our home when you first took over as owner. Though the Shenmue 3 announcement may have helped, it is no exaggeration to say that the outcome of your efforts here were and are very positive. All the best to you.

Congratulations, Peter. Though I will not upend the positive vibes of this thread by going into too much drama or detail, I hope that someday the fences may be mended with Ziming, along with his basic posting privileges restored. His own efforts and contributions have been instrumental in making the Dojo what it is today. I would hate to see all of those efforts instantly invalidated and his posting permanently stripped of him forever over a youtube video. It can be a hard line to walk being the boss sometimes. Not everyone will always agree with your decisions. But I have faith in you doing great things for the Dojo for years to come. :) I wish you the very best not only in your support of Shenmue 3 itself, but also in protecting the ties that bind the very community that was brought together by it in the first place.

Re: Ryo and Shenhua can't possibly retain their Shenmue 1/2

OP blah blah blah

Not gonna be making a habit of stepping on the moderators toes, but this "person* has had multiple accounts in this thread, multiple accounts here, and a list as long as my arm of stuff they have pulled not only here, but across social media. From bad mouthing myself on social media, soliciting on Twitter in the name of Shenmue 3. Even the OP account... I mean look at the avatar! What are the chances! Good god Holmes, it's surely not a coincidence?!?! *Puffs pipe

But let's go down the rabbit hole a bit more...

https://i.imgur.com/7gxSm3p.jpg

Hmmm, interesting. And then this...

Which takes us to this thread here...

To whoever you are, email activation by myself for new accounts will be in place very very soon, so you are gone from these forums. I am also messaging the administrator on the other forums where you have been bad mouthing this site, to make them aware of the accounts you have there too. What they decide to do is their call, but from me personally... Get help.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

If you did everything from December 3 to 17, and didn't spend your money on extras (phone calls, soda machines, Tomato Mart, games, move scrolls, etc.), how much Yen would you end up with, and what would that transfer to on your Shenmue 2 DC save file?

I'm thinking the most you could end up with what would be about 56,816円, which would translate to 1,894 HKD. The Manager always gives you 2,000円 on your Training Day, and I do not believe you can get any higher than 5,250円 (without glitching), 7,200円, 6,300円, and 9,000円 on your 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th workdays respectively.

Here's what I got:

Interview with Creator of the You Arcade Diorama

Earlier this year, a talented Shenmue fan and model hobbyist in Japan completed an amazingly-accurate scale model diorama recreation of the interior of Shenmue's You Arcade, which I'm sure many will have seen.

https://i.imgur.com/9hGElDB.jpg

I got in touch by email with the fan who created the diorama to ask what prompted him to embark on such a project and find out exactly how it was made.
Q: To start with, please tell us a bit about yourself.

HS: My real name is Hiroaki Suzuki. I teach the drums in Japan and as a hobby I mold figures and build model kits.

Q: What does Shenmue mean for you? What memories do you have about playing Shenmue?

HS: I came across Shenmue when I was about 12 or 13 years old. The first time I played, I found it hard and I remember spending all my time playing at the You Arcade.

Shenmue has taught me many things: to be thoughtful to those around you; the wonderfulness of helping each other; and the importance of making an effort.

In my work now as an instructor, I hope I’m able to pass on some of the things I grew to feel through Shenmue.
