Re: Fan-edited trailers

One (hopefully) last tweak of the Crouching Phoenix trailer:

https://youtu.be/TbAy3yODuvo

I cut out the lake even though the environment looks really good just because it didn't fit with the flow of the trailer. Added some text for "epic feel" and so I don't have to rely on janky slo-mo to match images with music.

Re: New Screens + Note From Yu via Playstation Blog

Also, somehow these shots just make me believe more and more that the game will not pick up in the cave, but with the arrival by boat. Not sure how that will play out but we will see.

I thought it'd be cool if the game starts with the scene in the cave, we get to the bit where Ryo and Shenhua look at each other at the end of Shenmue II... and then...

BOOM: Title card for "SHENMUE III". And then we finally leave the cave :P

Re: Blade Runner 2049

Based on the trailers and Hollywood's (and Ridley Scott's) tendency to produce garbage reboots, I fully expected this film to be a massive pile of shit. I've rarely been so glad to be proven wrong. I loved it, and the more I think about it, the more I appreciate the brilliance that went into it.

I was hesitant to see it when Ridley Scott said he was gonna direct it as I really did not care for Robin Hood or Prometheus. Then when it was announced Denis Villeneuve would direct, I checked out Sicario, Prisoners, Enemy, Incendies, and Arrival, and got hyped. Seen 2049 twice in cinemas now.

Update #76: Say Hello to the Deep Silver Promotion Team

Hello Everyone,

For the update today, we would like to give a big welcome and introduction to the new members of the project team, Deep Silver.

Gaming fans may already know, but Deep Silver is a video game publishing company and worldwide game distributer with a wealth of experience bringing games from Japan to countries around the world.

Their partnership is very reassuring, particularly in the promotion and sales departments, which our development team needs the support.

Message from Deep Silver:
We are all in Deep Silver delighted to be working with such a great team on such an anticipated game. We are as excited about this release as you are! Here is a shot of our global marketing team members at a recent Shenmue III meeting (gamescom 2017, Germany)

https://shenmue.link/blog/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/ILM_2017-SIII-1024x567.jpg

Concerning future updates
Deep Silver and Ys Net are moving forward with promotional planning that will encompass the whole of the project. Due to these adjustments, there will be an increase in instances where there will not be an update each and every month.

However, we are also looking into other media and events besides updates to give you a better experience as we roll out latest information, so please stay tuned!

The next dev room report is in the works, so please look forward to that, too! Thank you all for your continued support!

Going to Hong Kong + Guilin/Yangshuo in March 2018

Back in January I got to go to Japan for the first time, which was a dream come true, and it was great meeting Switch and Snoopbob!

I moved from London to Sydney in September, but a friend of mine from home is getting married in March so I'll be flying via Hong Kong for his wedding. I'll have the 17th-21st there and the 27th-31st, so I plan to visit Guilin + Yangshuo as well. Never been to Hong Kong before and the only city I've visited on the mainland was Beijing back in 2008 on a family holiday.

https://scontent-ort2-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/1923970_534632240912_266_n.jpg?oh=47817a2a4d566f39cfc13e33275a8ebb&oe=5A9D6FA0

(NB: that is not my family.)

Would be cool to meet other Dojo members there such as wdrpgwd, and if anyone else fancies meeting up for a Shenmue II/III pilgrimage that'd be neat, too :)

Re: The possibility of HD Saves carrying over to Shenmue III

What are the items that people would want to see carried over most? It sounds like, despite there still being scrolls, the fighting system will be quite different in III from the first two games, not sure how they would carry over in concept. Capsule toys? Those would be dependent on Sega allowing the licenses I guess.

The only thing I can really think of maybe are the photos, but they seem to have fulfilled their purpose already (i.e. showing Shenhua the photo of Ryo and Nozomi in Guilin in Shenmue II).

With things like the White Leaf, it's probably best that everyone starts with that in III, but if I remember correctly I think Suzuki had forgotten all about the White Leaf in a fan interview :P

Re: Famitsu Article

I just hope they avoid "double black bars"/letterboxing for Shenmue II cutscenes like in this screenshot:

https://i.imgur.com/awS4JxQ.jpg

Could this not be panned and scanned so only the black bars on the top and bottom remain, or no black bars at all (I can't remember if the cutscenes were 16:9 or 2.35:1)?

Re: Concerns about Shenmue HD.

Thought I'd send a quick email to D3T, I'm not too worried but thought there was no harm in sending this:

Hi there,

Really excited to play Shenmue I & II again as a lifelong fan. The work-in-progress screenshots look impressive so far, just had a couple of notes/concerns:

- How will shadows be implemented in Shenmue II? I played it on the Dreamcast so I never saw the stencil shadows for the Xbox version, but that would be a nice toggle feature to have, at least on PC.

- The cutscenes for Shenmue II were originally presented in letterboxed 16:9; is it possible to have these in 16:9 widescreen instead?

Looking forward to release day!

Shenmue HD in Discussions Before Shenmue III Announcement

“We saw the talk surrounding the announcement of Shenmue III, and we saw the demand for that game,” [John Clark, Sega Europe’s executive vice president of publishing] told IGN Japan at Tokyo event Sega Fes 2018. “(Ports of) Shenmue I & II had been a discussion pre Shenmue III, but I think that it all helped raise the awareness internally and externally,” giving Sega Europe’s team the leverage it needed to push the project forward.

That said, Clark believes the re-releases would have happened eventually even without the existence of Shenmue III, citing a general increase in global appetite for Japanese games, and for classic Sega IP.

"We have a wishlist [for most-wanted re-releases], and one of the first games that we brought out [from that list] was Valkyria Chronicles. That came out on PC, and the appetite for that game on PC led to it coming out on console as well, and now we see that the franchise is becoming really healthy.” Indeed, a Western release of Valkyria Chronicles 4 is due this fall on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

“That triggered renewed interest in the West for [Sega’s] Japanese titles, and they started to go to a bigger audience in the West than they had, say, 10 years or 15 years ago,” continued Clark. “It was encouraging for us and for Sega in Japan to see that. I think that influenced and gave us leverage on the kind of titles we could bring out, titles like Shenmue.”

Re: Concerns about Shenmue HD.

Curious, what company ported the Xbox version originally? I've heard Yu was not involve at all

Yu was indeed not involved, but it was still made by AM2 and led by Shin Ishikawa (https://segaretro.org/Shin_Ishikawa) who had also worked on the Dreamcast games: http://www.the-nextlevel.com/features/interviews/am2/

Re: Adam Koralik explains the re-releases (4:3, audio etc)

Curious as to why the file size is so big for the 2 games (30GB). Even with some of the assets being available in HD and dual audio, I'd still only expect it to be max. 15GB?

Where did you get the file size?

It's the minimum requirement on Steam. That said, the minimum requirement is often a little greater than the file size (free space required for paging etc.).

Re: New Info + Details of S1&2 from Adam Koralik (7th July)

Good to hear about fast loading times on base PS4/XB1; I was worried about lack of space on my PC SSD for both these remasters AND Shenmue III, but if the load times for the remasters are that fast I can just install them on my hard drive and then install III on the SSD when it comes out.

I'll likely play Shenmue I in 4:3 to avoid shifting aspect ratios, but I'm still not sure what to do for Shenmue II...
