Re: About the buildings in Baisha village

I noticed the Baisha buildings were Tulous as well! I posted it to reddit yesterday, but no one seemed to care :(

Here's another wikipedia article about them:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakka_walled_village

Apparently they're designed to be easily defensible, which would make sense, as Baisha village features an 'infiltration mission' into the Chi You Men's Guilin branch. I imagine we'll be sneaking into one of these Tuluos somehow.

For Choubu, we know it's a "riverside village with lots of shops, souvenir stores, hotels and temples", and that Yu Suzuki travelled to Suzhou in 1993 (as revealed in his Shenmue post-mortem). I hope he'll use it as inspiration, as it's very beautiful, being known as 'the Venice of China':

Re: Yu Tweets New KS Tiers/Goals Coming Soon + First S3 Artw

My favorite mini games were the arcade games. I'm guessing those will be left out of this one.

I couldn't honestly see the villages Shenhua and Ryo visiting in Shenmue 3 as realistically having Arcade games anyway ;-)

I think Choubu will definitely have an arcade. I'm hoping the village will be a scaled-down Suzhou (which Yu has previously used for inspiration). This is what it looks like:

The Villages: everything we know so far

I'm most excited by the new locations we'll get to explore, so I've collected images and descriptions of what we already know...

Baisha

Concept art and photos: http://imgur.com/a/Urtpj

Yu Suzuki said: Baisha will show off what Shenmue is all about. Live out a siege game reminiscent of the Warring kingdoms. See what strategist will come out on top.

May possibly feature an 'infiltration mission' into the Chi You Men's Guilin branch. The buildings shown in the concept art are called Tulous. They are between three and five stories high, can house up to 80 families and are easily defensible.

Choubu

Concept art and photos: http://imgur.com/a/eU3uV

Yu Suzuki said: Choubu is a riverside village with lots of shops, souvenir stores, hotels and temples. The quests in this village should be very enjoyable, I think.

And: Amidst the mystical scenery of the Li River, Choubu lies in a water colour painting come to life. The port of call will be filled with souvenir shops and hotels, shrines and village dwellings. Expect to meet a sage master of Nanquan there .

This area may feature the 'Magic Maze' technique of generating building interiors. It could also feature a part time job of some sort.

Bailu

Concept art and photos: http://imgur.com/a/YBRqA

Yu Suzuki said: Bailu is the village where Shenhua was raised and also a place that Ryo's father, Iwao, had visited when he was younger. Here as well the quests will play an important role as Ryo and Shenhua start their journey.

And: Shenmue 2 ends at Shenhua's house in the outskirts of Bailu village. Bailu village is waiting to be explored for real.

Have I missed any information?

Re: Are you looking forward to checking into Hotel Bird Danc

It'd be great if the hotel guests kept a routine. Waking up at 7am, breakfast in the dining room at 7:30am, touristy stuff all day, before returning drunk at 11pm, just before closing.

Re: Shenmue art book question

Seems like you were correct with your fishing mini-game idea Switch, as it's been revealed to be an activity in Shenmue 3. I'd like to think those stars are fishing spots on the edge of a floating village like this: http://i.imgur.com/sXj6k5I.jpg

Re: Nocon Kid & Shenmue III

Here's a good interview with Nocon Kid, for those that haven't seen it:
http://teamyu.net/Shenmue.III?topic=189.0

I wonder if Yu Suzuki chose Unreal for part III after seeing Nocon Kid's work, it wouldn't surprise me.

And there is precedent for Sega hiring this guy, as they used fans to port the original Sonic to ios back in 2013:

Realistic NPC's in Shenmue 3

I've heard people say that Shenmue 3 won't feel unique, as the elements it was famous for (intricate open-world, mini games, QTE's), can be found in a bunch of titles now. I obviously disagree, but it got me thinking about the one element no one really copied, having a realistic community simulation. For instance, the Funny Bear Burger guy will wake up, go to his shack, roll up the shutter, do a days work, close up, sweep outside and then walk home. You can even watch his apartment light switch off as he goes to sleep. I absolutely love this attention to detail and, apart from Animal Crossing, haven't seen it in other modern games.

During the postmortem Yu Suzuki reminisced about accidentally losing all the dock workers who'd become stuck in the Tomato convenience store. They were programmed to visit at a certain time, but couldn't leave through the narrow, crowded entrance. I find this attempt to create a functioning community amazing and I hope the NPC's in Choubu receive the same treatment. It could be something truly unique in modern RPG's.

Do you think Suzuki will keep this community simulation aspect even on a limited budget?

Re: Realistic NPC's in Shenmue 3

I was doing some research into NPC community simulators and apparently there's an upcoming game called 'Kingdom Come: Deliverance' that is attempting to do some incredible things. Here's a very interesting video about the game (I've jumped to the relevant section):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=C7QJnc1bs7g#t=210

And here's a paper on the process behind it:
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:AaNZ0vMY7OkJ:www.aaai.org/ocs/index.php/AIIDE/AIIDE14/paper/download/8995/8922+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=ca&client=safari

Suzuki should hire these guys ASAP!

EDIT. I just found out this game was on Kickstarter also and raised £1.1M ($1.7M) and the game world seems very large. They've continued to fund-raise on their website.

Re: Can we speculate on locations based on the GDC concept m

Cangyanshan looks amazing.

Here's a post I made on the villages in Shenmue 3. It has some real-life photos:

Kingdom Come's living world - Yu Suzuki should watch this

I've mentioned this game in a different thread, but I just stumbled across a more in-depth video that showcases the incredible NPC's of Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The characters have work and rest cycles much like shenmue, but even more advanced. Is there a way to send this video to the Shenmue 3 dev team? I think they'd find it inspiring:

Re: Yu Suzuki talks about Shenmue 3 and memories

The story is still intact but i had to adjust some of the extra elements and details. We talked about the 200 people in that village - maybe we will even have 400 in the end, i didn't decide yet. You have to remember that all the city / village residents in 1 & 2 had a "real" simulated life, thats a really complicated and tough quest and the budget for Shenmue 3 is probably not big enough to do that again.

This makes me sad, because it's something so unique to shenmue. I'd personally prefer 70 village residents with a schedule than 200 without.

Other games on relatively small budgets have given their NPC's realistic routines, like Kingdom Come, so I hope there's still a chance.

Here's how they do it in Kingdom Come: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=kA8rTyIO0xE&feature=youtu.be

Edit. I just read that Kingdom Come is also being published by Deep Silver! Unfortunately it's being developed in CryEngine, so there's no chance they could share/license their amazing AI tech with Shenmue's team.
