Re: New Members Introduce Yourself!

Afternoon! Like many have written, I was waiting for a 'mue III announcement before signing up and here I am!

Have been lurking here since late '06, when Alimn started his efforts to get the 'mue III ball rolling (what's happened to him, btw?). I am a massive and I mean MASSIVE fan of the series and I've always said that if I had won the lottery here in Canada, I'd definitely call up Yu Suzuki and donate a couple of million to the cause (we can all dream). Now, I won't have to hope for either! :D

Just a couple of images of me with my Shenmue-loving bits :D:

http://i57.tinypic.com/ev598h.png

That's my leg tattoo and the biggest thing on it (don't have a good shot of it) is Ryo on top of the Phoenix Mirror; he looks MUCH better now, 2+ years later, touched up and the like, but haven't taken a shot it him in a while.

http://i57.tinypic.com/1yn8ro.png

That was my birthday cake from last year; the Phoenix Mirror is easily my #1 favourite symbol/item in any videogame ever and yes, the colours are a bit off, but its hard to make fondant look EXACTLY like the green in the mirror.

Shenmue for me, like many here, transcends life in some ways; its not my favourite game ever (II is my third favourite, after Total Annihilation and Final Fight CD), but I do deem 'mue II to be the greatest achievement in gaming history, when it was released. Still think its the best game ever.

Anyways, looking forward to FINALLY interacting with you all and one question; where is the button to donate to the dojo? Thank you!

Re: Ren's Greatest Moments

Favourite bit is in the orphanage, which is almost like below:

Kid: "Hmm... she had a kind of bird with her, in a cage."
Ryo: "A bird, huh?"

Turtle (or something)
Crow Talking Bird
Cat

(Select Crow)

Ryo: "Was it a crow?"
Kid: "No."
Ren: "You idiot! What Crow talks? And who keeps a Crow in a cage?"

Re: The Mysterious Scroll

David Deville, otherwise known as aizen59 (I believe), interivewed Yu Suzuki here: http://shenmuedojo.net/new/extras/interview1114.html

They talked about a lot more than what was discussed in the interview, stuff he was asked not to publish. Some of it was about Baihu, who David claims is much more than a street fighter. See this thread: http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=47219&start=15#p1077456

I think he said it for a fact on 500k, so if you want, I can find that post. Baihu is more than the 4th street fighter.

Indeed, I remember that thread well when I was lurking; glued to it for one whole day, re-reading and looking crap up! :D

Re: Questions for Yu during twitch compiling the list

I'm indifferent to the other ones, but I wouldn't ask the first question; what's the point?

VIEWING it in a pre-movie-like thing, like with Shenmue II, sure. But there's no need to replay the beginning of 1, it feels redundant to me, IMO>

Re: What's happened in your life in the past 14 years?

I think it was around 2004/2005 when I played Shenmue for the first time. I'm one of those who played Shenmue2 first because I owned an Xbox back then. I remember I was amazed by the Shenmue2 demo that I found on a magazine.. :D So then I bought Shenmue2 and a Dreamcast on ebay to play the first one. I was at high school at the time. Now I've got a degree in Japanese language and culture and I'm doing a master's degree, and I hope to find a good job soon, either here in Italy or in Japan. :) I'm 25 now and I'm still a gamer as I was in my childhood.. During this time I''ve also been playin a lot of instruments and gigs in small venues and music remains one of my biggest passions. The 3 months I've spent in Japan (mainly Kyoto) last year were awesome as well. I'll be back in Japan next month but just for a couple of weeks, as a tourist this time.. 8)

Auguri, signore.

As for me, first played 'mue in January, 2006, as I got my DC in October, '05.

I was so cheesed that the game ended with Chai as I didn't know the backstory behind Shenmue (which is VERY unlike me; I research things to death before getting into them). Then got 'mue II in 2008 (a story I like to tell a lot) and have never looked back!

In the past 14 years (I was 12 when it 'mue II came out), a ton has happened. High School was great and despite graduating a semester before everyone (Summer school FTW!), I stayed an extra full year because a lot of my grade 12 marks were shitty.

Went to University and got kicked out of one of my majors (Communications, the reason I went to Uni in the first place) and got a job at the supermarket by my house. Loved both Uni and my job and after 2 years, got back into Comm and graduated a year later, like high school, I left a year after my peers, with more credits than necessary to graduate lol. Uni was awesome, but I had a lot of hardship to go with the highs; I got cancer, a chick I was seriously pursuing chose another guy over me when I was in hospital during that time (which is fine by me now, but at the time I took it super hard), travelled to Italy which was lovely but then got treated like crap at my job when I got back, for about 6-7 months and my sister got divorced (after we dealt with the loser for almost 11 years), which was hard on the family.

Did a post-grad certificate for Social Media and just finished that, plus I quit the supermarket job after 7 years, 6 months (I DID have future prospects there, but things went sour the last 2 months I was there), as I was approached for my current job right now, at the HO of a bank.

Met my future wife in 2009, at said job and started dating her in 2012. I'm going to propose to her next year, when we go to Japan (in July). Life has been interesting and a MASSIVE learning experience, these past 14 years!

Re: This community is great

It bothered me to death to not sign up way back in '06, but I was adamant to wait until III was announced (I thought it would happen A LOT sooner lol). While I did lurk the Shenmue section to death, the real bonding and good stuff on ANY message board, are in the OT/Social sections and that I never even thought to glance at, when I was lurking here.

Just doing a bit of posting and looking at old threads in this section, this community is bomb AF. Kicking myself every day lol

I think she means in the context that, "oh, its too bad. If you bought food or whatever for 100 yen, its not too big a loss, but since you bought this tape for 1000 yen (or whatever), it would've been nice to win a prize!"

That's how I always took it.

Re: Living in Tokyo (Updated Yokosuka and Dobuita pictures!!

When the Shenmue saga is finally finished it would be so amazing to go on a tour of all the locations. Dobuita to Hong Kong to Guilin and beyond.

You know what? I think that all of us should do the "Shenmue pilgrimage," when the series is done; if its possible too, to travel like Ryo did (boat, bus, boat), though I know Japan has been getting rid of their ferries, since flying is much cheaper (well, I'm not claiming THAT is the reason, but...).

Can't wait to go to Dobuita in a month too! Back when I was planning the trip last year, I consulted japan-guide.com and those people there as well, were all, "why do you want to go to Yokosuka? There's nothing there."

Re: Which character deserve a spin-off game and How would it

Xiuying would be my top choice: possibilities are endless, from her as a kid, to her time training to become a master, to running the temple and beating up thugs, tons of things.

In terms of what makes most sense from a money-making standpoint, would be to do a mobile puzzle game/business sim as Tom, selling hotdogs: a new one gets a million DLs every week, so why not?

Great ideas in this thread though. I'll add a couple more:

- Tai-Chi with Jianmin and Guixiang
- pet raising simulator with the cat
- ShenHua's life in Bailu
- Joy checking up on all of the merchants in HK
- Running Five Stars Corporation as Zhu or Zhang

Re: Why is Shenmue II better than Shenmue I?

And Bluemue said it again lol.

'mue II is still, far and away, the greatest game and achievement in gaming, ever, IMO; for a game from 2001, there is a microscopic amount of things that could be improved upon...

...

... and nothing's coming to me off the top of my head, at the moment.

- Arguably the best graphics ever in a game, at the time of release
- Among the best (and most iconic, in many circles) soundtracks ever
- Improvements on everything that was lacking the in the first title (better fight system, wait times, etc.)

I can go on. The whole experience from, "Hong Kong, February, 1986," to the end, is the best in gaming history.

Exposition is fantastic, as more and more of the story is revealed, Xiuying is one of the best video game characters ever conceptualised and I still maintain to this day, that the Yellowhead Building is the best hour (and a bit!) in video game history: it's a wild ride and even my fiancée enjoyed it immensely.

Like in the first game, Five Stars Corp is my favourite part of Shenmue II: the story unfolds significantly and you realise that there is an exponential amount of information and story that you haven't even scratched the surface of: that to me, is excitement AMD enthrallment to the 'nth degree.

And then it all calms down and is amazing, in the form of Guilin: more story is revealed, more wonderful music, you learn a lot about Ryo that you didn't know before and the Phoenix Mirror <3<3<3.

I dare you to find a better work of art from the video game industry, dare you!

Re: Favourite lines of dialogue in the game(s)?

Oh God, these are great! :D

'mue:

Ryo: "Don't you know that blackmail is waaaaaaay uncool?"- The way Corey's voice just dips for a second has always had me rolling. :rotflmao:

(paraphrasing here)
Shozo Mizuki: "Eh? what is it youngin'?"
Ryo: "Do you know any place where I can get a job around here?"
Shozo: "Do I look gainfully employed to you?"

:rotflmao:

Nagai Industries Doorman: "Huh? You shut up. If you don't shut up, I'll make sure you do!" (again, paraphrasing)

Ryo: "Excuse Me."
Nagai Industries Guy Inside: "Son, I don't know what's got you in a rush/others, but never stray off... the right path!"
Ryo: "Yes sir."
Nagai Guy: "That's a good answer kid!"

Ryo: "Um..."
Girl: "Huh?" Whatcha want, twit? Ok bastard!"
Ryo: "Excuse me."
Girl: "Huh? I'll slap ya silly, ya pansy!"

'mue II

I can go on for even longer with these, but I'll just go with my favourite funny and favourite serious.

Guixiang: "Why did you save me?"
Ryo: "Why? Wouldn't anyone?"
Guixiang: " Do not hesitate to do the right thing. "

I've moulded my life on the line from Guixiang; it has helped me out of many a sticky situation.

Ryo: "Is it a crow?"
Ren: "Idiot! What crow talks?! And who keeps a crow in a cage?!"

Re: Kickstarter Update #74 - Gamescom Travelogue

Looks fine to me.

Someone on NeoGAF posted a head-to-head of New Ryo and the guy from Yakuza and I honestly think Ryo looks better & more detailed. People are just setting their expectations WAY too high. Animations, yeah, have work to be done, but let's stop being so dramatic that we're proclaiming we won't even PLAY the game if the game looks like it does in these screenshots.

[edit]

Looks like Peter posted the comparison here.

Here's the thing people, 0 is a 2015 game, developed in 2014.

To compare the two to that title, isn't quite apt, as it was still on the Yakuza 5 engine as well (whichever engine that was).

Compare it to RGG 6, THEN we'll see what's better, as that is the most recent game in the series; Hell, Kiwami is a 2016 game, developed in 2015, so even that is closer to where we're at.

That being said, I could care less; as many others have said, I'll take a walking pile of turd as the model and still be happy :D

That first pic is indeed gorgeous, I had a huge smile on my face when I saw it

Re: Yu Suzuki: "I can make the whole game you imagined"

Regardless of how much he villified or hated by the Shenmue fanbase (Peter, lol), Peter Moore did great things for Sega as a whole and if not for him making the decision he did, Sega would most-likely not even be a software dev/publisher today, which means we would've gotten:

- No Ryu ga Gotoku and the various other related titles
- No awesome arcade titles
- Nothing but Sonic, which, as we know, has been subpar for most of the 2000s
- Various IPs sold off and possibly tainted/ruined/not done anything with

Hate the guy all you want for Shenmue-related things, but:

1. It wouldn't have saved Sega if II was released in NA, thus we would still be where we are today, most-likely.
2. I'm happy with the stuff we've gotten, post-Dreamcast (well, mainly the entire Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza series lol and Binary Domain) and the latter DC titles, like Under Defeat, Radirgy and the like.

I'll back away now, just thought I'd give a different rationale on why PM did what he did.

Re: Yakuza series

So an update on 6 here.

I've discovered Salty Yen in the past 3 days and have been using his videos side by side, when I'm playing the game, so the cutscenes are synced and all that jazz.

The story has become utterly brilliant and I'm super glad that they finally did what I wished for them to do and make the stry centered around Yakuza vs. Triads, albeit not in the way I imagined.

Anyways, seeing Salty Yen's (INITIAL, as he changed his opinion almost 180 in the next video) opinion and the opinions of many others, I now know why people say the story sucks/not good etc.; they are utterly, 100% wrong in their reasoning. People have placed these characters on pedestals and because the writers have written them to do things out of the norm, the story is deemed, "bad," when in reality, people just don't like it.

Therefore, I urge anyone and everyone who gets the game once its translated, please give it a chance and dispell any pre-conceived notions that you may have about the game and story; take note of the evolutionary changes and just the evolution of the series in general and then form an opinion.

I (and I know I'm not the only one) don't want to see this series dead in the water, in the West again and the massive backlash from fans, simply because THEY DON'T LIKE the evolution of the series and not because things are objectively bad, may be one of the things that does it in, especially since this is Kiryu's last title and they are starting over of sorts, with Ichiban.

Anyways, Takeshi is simply awesome, his character is awesome and the story has become intriguing and has kept me wanting more; the more and more I play it, the more and more I think that 6 is up there with 3, 5 and 0 as the best in the series.

EDIT: So I just watched the first 5 minutes of Yen's "Review," video of the game and he flipped back to his previous notion that the story was stupid :???:  Whatever.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

Shenmue HD is not coming this year

In fact it's never coming. Excuse my negativity but Sega haven't even started on the project yet. Shenmue 3 will be out with a HD collection of the first two. Sega don't believe it will sell well because they are right, it won't. DO NOT believe any of these rumours that the game is going to be announced or released in 2017.

Tend to agree that it won't happen; just doesn't seem in the cards, especially when looking at history, trends, etc.

As for my own selfish needs (probably the only selfish Shenmue-related feeling), I don't want them to release it; if you want to play it, fork out the cash for a DC!

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

IMO, it is a very good film; decent plot, good acting, great action sequences, enjoyable and Daisy Ridley is incredibly sexy.

As a *STAR WARS* film, it is a travesty; FA opened up so many plotlines and made a ton of headway in which direction the series would/could go.

This film slammed the massive door shut on ALL of those plot points, introducing new ones that are confusing and pointless, IMO and while I don't care (really don't), it pissed off a ton of fans who won't go back to the series and Disney will lose out.

Not invested into the series enough or care enough to let it really bother me, but I empathise with the hardcore on this.

On top of that, it has a decent number of David Cage's stupid quirks.

Which ones?

I know the game well (it's one of my all time favorites in fact, despite its flaws), but can't see much connection with the criticisms levelled at Cage's later games.

David Bowie FTW, super fun game, but, like the other QD games mentioned in this thread, gameplay is a bit on the clunky side.

Re: Yakuza series

lol I still don't find Haruka's parts cringeworthty...

Not to beat a dead horse (I've rambled before on it), but it's mainly the bits where Haruka's manager is explaining to her that being a pop idol is some kind of noble pursuit, that she gives people something to love, so she needs to work extra hard at it or whatever. Meanwhile there's touching music playing in the background, as if the developers themselves actually believe this crap.
Because yeah, being a little girl in a skimpy outfit singing squeaky baby songs mainly for the pleasure of lonely 20- and 30-something-year-old men (which the game totally acknowledges during the "meet and greet" minigames) is super noble.
I'm not sure if the series can make me cringe any harder than that stuff does. That stuff actually hurt Haruka's character for me; I see her on the cover of 6, and all I can think is "ugh." Never used to be the case before Yakuza 5. She seemed like a really strong character until then.
But yeah, rant over. Just had to specify.
I wouldn't mind Haruka's section so much if it were, say, poking fun at the idol scene, or if it were about some kind of corruption or crime going on within. But instead they go the "follow your dreams and be an inspiration by becoming a child sex symbol!" route, and I just can't really dig on that so much.

I fully understand what you mean; the way you paint it is much funnier (and realistic) than many would portray it :rotflmao:

I'm not crazy right, they changed the name of sunflower orphanage to "morning glory" in Yakuza 6?

Yep.

Not so much that they changed it, but it was a stupid localisation thing, ala Kazama/Fuma:

The orphanage that Kazama began was called Sunflower; Kiryu's is named after the Morning Glory flower(s), specifically (I believe, not too sure here) Ipmoea Alba, as they bloom during the night (while Sunflowers bloom during the day).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipomoea_alba

Just thought I'd share that :)

Re: what is the best chapter, do you feel?

Shenmue 2 before Ryo goes to Guilin. Is that chapters 2 and 3?

Not that I didn't like Guilin because I really did; I felt Guilin was a delightful counterpoint to chapters 2 and 3 with its wondrous natural landscapes and beautiful soothing music, but chapters 2 and 3 is where the action is at. Action-packed throughout, it really was thrilling, edge-of-your-seat stuff with not a single dull moment.

If I had to choose just one chapter, then it would have to be chapter 3(the one in Kowloon?).
Wow, just wow. I mean Ryo and Ren's ascension to the 17th floor of the yellow head building is reason alone to choose this epic chapter. That's not even including the street fights, Ryo and Ren's escape while handcuffed, rescuing Joy and Wong etc etc.

By the by, the other chapters are not too bad as well :D

3, for me, is the best "disc," of gaming ever created, with the Yellowhead Building being the best hour (and a bit!) in videogame history; so much variation, so many challenges, so many enemies and different methods of fighting them, Hang-On, (strongly detest using this word but) 2 absolutely EPIC boss battles, with phenomenal cutscenes...

Kowloon for sure.

Re: Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise (SEGA,Yakuza team)

I beat it two nights ago and finished off the last two (achievable, for me) trophies, last night.

This is far and away the grindiest game in the series and it WILL take you over 150 hours to platinum it, not to mention there are a couple of early missable things to watch out over.

Thankfully, you will need to beat the game twice to collect everything, so anything missed can be done again the second time 'round.

Music is great, voice acting is incredible and the story is damn good as well, though I feel many will be unhappy with yet another, "underwhelming final boss," that has been thrown around quite a bit in the series, lately. . One thing that some people may find odd, is that there aren't ANY weapons in the game (just the "Hidebu," which don't count lol), which lacks a bit of variety, however that leads me to say...

... the fighting is the best thing about this game, as they've really captured the spirit and essence of HNK even if the fighting animations constantly get repeated .

But yeah, the sheer amount of things to do + difficulty, this is the toughest Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza game thus far and you need to spend a ton of time grinding for things and repeating things.

A few more spoilers, for those that want to know:

[spoiler]
- Amon returns and he's the toughest he's ever been, by far, ESPECIALLY since you can't use weapons.
- This is a completely new story, with returning characters. So this won't be a callback to the HNK you know and love, as they change things up a bit, story-wise.
- Komaki is in this game as well!

Its a great game, I'd give it a 9/10 and place it after Kiwami 2, as best in the series. It runs on the old engine, so its still in the style of Kiwami, 0 and before.
