Re: Shenmue III teaser is FINALLY HERE!!

Because I want the game and series to be a success so we can get Shenmue IV. The argument is that it's not a good trailer that sells the game to the masses who they need to sell it to for this game to be a success story. Sure the 70k hardcore who contributed to Kickstarter understand it's in development and a work in progress but most people don't look into this stuff or care. But so far the game has sold only 70k copies but they still need to make back Sega, Sony, Shibuya and Deep Silvers investments to be a success. People think the game is already a success story because of Kickstarter but 70k copies sold would make it one of the biggest flops ever so you can't stop there, that's why you need to focus on non Shenmue fans.

It's not that the game is going on sale tomorrow. There is at least 12 Month ahead, probably more.

Before Gamescom there was people genuinely asking on social medias if Shenmue 3 was still a thing or if it was dead.

Beside, the teaser showed very good things too and the whole project is in a far better place now with the Deep Silver deal. We can argue for days over the teaser. There are going to be other teasers/trailers, other deals and announcements hopefully positive for the whole franchise. It's a little early to go in total panic mode.

Just relax.

Re: Shenmue III teaser is FINALLY HERE!!

I think that overall, Gamescom brought great news to Shenmue fans and since nobody is panicking, maybe it's time to move on and look at the future with some confidence.

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

I get it too. Blind fanboy-faith won't get anyone anywhere.

I may end lynched for what I'm going to say, but I don't agree on that. Not fully at least.

I personally think that, as the Shenmue fanbase, we should be a little bit fanboys.

There is more than enough people jumping on every single occasion to bash Shenmue or Yu Suzuki for many various reasons. There is more than enough people wanting Shenmue to fail for many various reasons.

I don't say we need to be blinded by our passion for the Shenmue Series but we need to be united and put things in perspective when a mere 53 seconds video update for Kickstarter backers is enough to see wagons of people use it to bash Shenmue 3 or insult Yu Suzuki's talent.

it's a crowdfunded project, we get to see steps of the development we usually never see. I can agree that the communication around the project is not good, but that doesn't mean that the game won't be good in the end.

What good can come out from joining the chorus of critics? What good can come out from telling to YsNet and Yu Suzuki that they are bad at making a game? That the artistic direction is wrong, the Ryo model is off, etc...?
They know what they are doing and are doing the best they can anyway.
Just think of the Deep Silver partnership: Suzuki San always knew he would need more budget to achieve what he has in mind for Shenmue 3 so he managed to increase the budget. For a man who never gave up on his dream to continue the Shenmue story, the least we can do is to keep our faith in him.

Until Shenmue 3 is released, the best attitude the Shenmue fan base can adopt is to be supportive of the development team efforts.

Now, let the lynching begin.

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

Maybe it's good to remind us what's the actual reality of Shenmue 3 development.

Are we (still) expecting Shenmue 3 to be at AAA standards?

Thanks to the Kickstarter and following Slacker Backer campaigns (6,813,403$ at the moment), the funds that will really go into Shenmue 3 development budget from crowdfunding are actually more or less 4,905,000$ best case scenario .

https://i.imgur.com/azPRP54.png

Nobody knows how much funding is coming from private investors but we do know that Yu Suzuki said he would be able to create the Shenmue 3 experience he has in mind for $10 million, so let's assume that's what the budget really is.

Yu Suzuki explained repeatedly and most recently in the interview to M! Games the budget situation.

Q) There were a lot of critical responses for the Shenmue 3 teaser. What would you tell the people who feel disappointed?

A) We don't have any facial expressions in the game right now and none of the character models are final yet. So it will look different and better in the final game. The teaser is not representing the quality of the final game, we are still in the middle of developing. And of course you have to remember the budget. The budget is good enough for our game, but it's pretty small if you compare it to other games right now. We can't keep up with big modern games. We would need a way bigger budget (ten times bigger than now) to make perfect modern graphics. So we need to find a good middle way between good graphics and good content. Please don't expect high-end graphics, Shenmue 3 is not about that.

I don't know if people have too much expectations, if they are missing the point of what the existence of Shenmue 3 means or if there's a lot of bad faith around, but the way Shenmue 3 development is treated by average media outlets look unfair to me.

By comparison, GTA V development budget was around $137 million according to media analyst Arvind Bhatia.
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Development_of_Grand_Theft_Auto_V

This doesn't mean we shall expect Shenmue 3 to be a bad game, with ugly graphics and amateurish animations.

Q) You said that Shenmue 3 will be bigger than you thought at first?

A) Yes, the game will probably be three times as big as I had in mind at the beginning. One of the villages has over 200 residents now instead of just 50. This village alone is five times bigger than I had in mind.

Q) But still - Shenmue 3 hasn't the same budget as 1 or 2. What do you have to change in the game because of that?

A) The story is still intact but I had to adjust some of the extra elements and details. We talked about the 200 people in that village - maybe we will even have 400 in the end, I haven't decided yet. You have to remember that all the city/village residents in 1 & 2 had a "real" simulated life - that's a really complicated and tough task and the budget for Shenmue 3 is probably not big enough to do that again.

We need to accept that choices are to be made and as Yu Suzuki says, that a middle way has to be found between good graphics and good content.

The Shenmue Serie are much more than just graphics ahead of their time and Shenmue 3, also thanks to Deep Silver partnership will be better and bigger than what even Yu was expecting when he started this Journey.

Just have faith guys.
It may take longer than expected, but I'm sure the final result is going to be the best we could have dreamed of. :king:

Re: Yu Suzuki talks about Shenmue 3 and memories

Thanks for the OPM interview scans, Sono!

Granted it's not a translation bad joke or a misunderstanding due to the "language barrier", this part is really intriguing.

"We considered offering the first two games along with Shenmue III, and it may still happen ," says Suzuki-san. "But we thought it would be more fun to include that content as memories, so when you play the new game you get memories of old stories or some other content from Shenmue I and II. For example, if you're walking in the village and there's an older guy telling you what happened in the previous games, so it's totally incorporated into the game."

As weird as it sounds (mainly because YsNet doesn't own Shenmue 1 & 2) can you imagine the first two games being embedded within Shenmue 3?

Let's say Ryo and Shenhua get out of the cave and are heading towards Bailu village. Just before crossing the river bridge, Ryo stops and looks at birds flying in the sky. Shenhua asks him what is happening and Ryo answers "Nothing. I wonder where those birds come from and where they are flying. This reminds me how far from the day my father died I am now." The camera zooms in towards the flying birds and a text box appears with three options:
"Relive that day" - "Watch memories from that day" - "Skip".

Wouldn't this be awesome and would you replay the whole journey from November 29, 1986? :king:

Re: Shenmue III @Gamescom '17 Discussion - That's All, Folks

A new interview with Yu Suzuki at Gamescom emerged. (9Lives.be)

Google Translation:
https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.9lives.be%2Fspecial%2Fportret-van-yu-suzuki-de-gamelegende-die-een-comeback-forceert-met-shenmue-iii&edit-text=&act=url

Portrait of Yu Suzuki, the game legend that forces a comeback with Shenmue III

With Shenmue III, somewhere in the market next year, legendary game designer Yu Suzuki returns from the Limbo of mobile games to finally make a title with some scale. Who is this person, and why is his comeback such a big deal? A portrait.

https://www.9lives.be/sites/default/files/styles/main/public/content/shenm.jpg?itok=Y6sYY2hz

It is 1985, and a 27-year-old Yu Suzuki undertakes a car trip through Europe. The journey starts in Frankfurt, but takes him further to places like the Romantic Road in Germany, the Swiss Alps, the French Riviera, Florence, Rome, and the Trevi Fountain. The visual impressions he gains there will form the basis for Out Run (1986) for him an ode to the romantic road trip, for the audience of young people who are in luna parks around the red, pneumariate-set Ferrari shears a piece youth sentiment under construction. " A game designer has to open his eyes and ears so that he can bring up the impressions he gains in the world of the game he makes ," Suzuki says now more than thirty years later. "About eighty percent of everything I make is based on my own experiences."

Continuation

Patches from that life of the now 59-year-old game designer will be encountered again in Shenmue III, a third episode of the kung fu-eighties-rpg epic that Suzuki started on the Sega Dreamcast in 1999, especially after the second game. from 2001 became a culthit. A lot of fans stayed until today, sixteen years later, waiting for a successor, Suzuki says. "That is also the main reason why I did not just put my shoulders under something completely new: the many fans who are still there for Shenmue, and who asked me in online forums to finish this story. And so I did the latter . "

Despite the more than sixteen years between the releases of Shenmue III and the previous episode, the game picks up the events of Suzuki's saga almost immediately in 1987. Ryo Hazuki, the late teen from the previous games who is looking for the his father's murderer, migrates to the mountains of Guilin, China. Where he meets Ling Shenhua, the mysterious girl that appears in his dreams. His quest proves to be in touch with hers: a legend from her village already predicted that their paths of life would intersect. In the meantime, he keeps in touch with characters from the previous games via the telephone, who are still in Japan.

Shenmue III is a continuation of a multi-game spanning story that Suzuki already had in his head twenty years ago, he says: it was only because of circumstances that it never went beyond two episodes. Even the themes of Shenmue III remain more or less the same, says Suzuki: " Romance, friendship, adventure. And kung fu. The usual combinations of a Shenmue story. "

Comeback

Yu Suzuki's star started a decade ago within the ranks of Sega, the video gamer in which he grew up. But his influence on the video game medium as we know it is undeniable. We already talked about Out Run, but in the late 80's and early 90's his name featured more big games from the luna park: with the graphically powerful internal hardware that Suzuki designed for those games, and the system of hydraulic pumps that caused the arcades to move, he gave Hang-On, Out Run, Space Harrier and After Burner a completely new élan to the category of arcade cabinets that was already waning. A few years later, he again pioneered, this time in 3D graphics, with games such as Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter and Virtua Racing for the Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast and the luna carpets from the Japanese manufacturer.

"A game designer has to open his eyes and ears."

When Sega gave him carte blanche at the end of the 90s to develop a big title for the Dreamcast, Suzuki seized the opportunity to start his magnum opus with the first Shenmue. But the market conditions decided differently: the Dreamcast became almost Sega's Titanic, and Suzuki was put on less ambitious projects. At the beginning of the decade he made some worthwhile sequels on games that he himself had helped launch, including Virtua Fighter 4 (2001) and Out Run 2: Coast 2 Coast (2003), but the time of big new things was over. Suzuki's and Sega's roads separated from each other in 2011, and Suzuki went into a sort of subcontracting deal from his own company Ys Net to make mobile versions of Segatitels until he announced the production of Shenmue III two years ago through a Kickstart campaign.

The grandmaster started back at the bottom of the ladder. " I have researched various opportunities to finance Shenmue III, " says Suzuki. " But a Kickstart campaign seemed like the best. It was also hard for us to find a good partner. And we saw the enormous momentum of fans who were still interested in the game. Then I decided to use that power to get the project going again. "

Much changed

In the meantime, the project also found shelter with a new publisher, the German Koch Media. Everything is ready to put the game on the market in 2018. During that very turbulent period, Suzuki also discovered how firmly the medium has changed. Not only the landscape of video game companies looks very different than just a decade ago, when he recorded his last small successes under the Sega flag: the way in which games are made is also very different.

" The arrival of game engines, which are central to development today, has changed a lot, " says Suzuki. "And that is for the most part good: you can analyze everything you want in terms of gameplay much better, quickly create a prototype in which you try small details. But for someone who has been working for a while, it is quite a change: I have to retrain myself to learn to think in that new way. At the time of the first two Shenmue's I wrote all the code myself, and I could quickly check things myself. With the advent of engines, the programming work can be done by a whole team, but that also means that I have to stop a whole process when something does not quite suit me. It has its advantages and disadvantages. But especially advantages. "

With these modern means, a game is still being made that takes place in the 1980s, an era that was deep in the past at the time of the first Shenmue, in 1999. But for Suzuki, himself a late twenties to a young man in the Eighties, the last important stories were told at the time. " With the Shenmue games, I wanted to tell a story about the older eras, when the character of people was even more important than anything else," says Suzuki. "The 80s were the last years of that old time with which today's players still have points of contact. Everything changed afterwards: before the arrival of the modern technology that is waving today, everyone was still largely the same, because we all got the same information. The charm of that era, its innocence in a sense, is for me a never-ending source of inspiration. "

Re: PAYPAL SUPPORT FOR SHENMUE 3! PRE-ORDER FOR PS4/PC!

12th January 2018

$6,847,965 (+$ 14,373)

75,432 Backers (+205)

$ 312 a day on average

300$ has been the average daily donations for the last 3 months. If it continues that way, we should hit 6,955,000 by Christmas 2018. We would need $425 everyday to hit the 7M$ mark. If the kickstarter upgrades show up, we can easily do it :-"

February 7, 2018

$6,853,919 (+$5,954) ($229/day)

75,516 Backers (+84) (+$70.88/backer)

Still strong numbers for the Slacker Backer. I honestly didn't expect it to keep this pace.

Re: Is Niao Sun still planned to be the villain in Shenmue I

Speaking of Niao Sun and Mr Muscles, I just learned that there are two "Praying Mantis" Kung Fu styles.

"Shanxi" (relying on inner strength and borrowing power to fight), also known as the "gentle Praying Mantis" style and "Shandong", which style looks very hard and strong.

Very interesting video about the "Shanxi Style" Praying Mantis Kung Fu:
https://youtu.be/GUw4JMKz0Uk

I'm now wondering which of the two styles, if Yu makes a distinction between them, Niao Sun and maybe also Mr Muscles will be using in Shenmue 3.

Re: The 'Smell' Shader

Personally, this screenshot from Gamescom 2017 gives me a sense of "smell".

https://i.imgur.com/NPjXwIp.jpg

I've been lucky enough to travel to South Africa once in my life and go out for a photo safari in the Bush at 6:00 am.

There was something special not only in the air, the smell, but also in the light. The combined effect was a unique feeling that people from there described to me as something specific to Africa.

I have a similar feeling watching at this screenshot from the surroundings of Bailu village.
The scattered mist and the range of colors going from very dark to vivid. The sun light above the Village tower.
All this gives me the feeling i'm there, at 6:00 in the morning. Almost smelling flowers and the nearby river, feeling the sun warmth on my skin.

It's honestly hard to tell (for me) what Suzuki San means exactly about Shenmue 3 graphics smell, but there's something in what we have seen so far that I don't recall to have seen in (many) others recent productions.

Please, stay calm...

There have been many versions of Ryo even since before the original Shenmue was released on Dreamcast.

As a matter of fact, no model will ever 100% satisfy everyone.

The best model of Ryo so far, is the one used in the original games. The next best Ryo model will be the one used in Shenmue 3. There are more important things to achieve for the good of the franchise future... in my opinion.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

Is it possible that we will see gameplay of Shenmue III this year? I hope for that!

We know for a fact that a playable build of Shenmue 3 does exist.
https://twitter.com/CedricBiscay/status/967290485869031424

The question is, when will Yu Suzuki and the marketing team consider that the time to show it to the public has come?

What I mean is that we don't need to worry about the fact that we didn't see gameplay footage so far. It doesn't mean that the development isn't going well and it doesn't necessarily mean that we are extremely far from a Shenmue 3 release.

In my opinion it's really a matter of showing the game in the best conditions at the best time.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

The burden of being a crowdfunded project is definitely putting a lot of pressure onto the team.
It's a shame because what they need the most is serenity and trust. As Pollito Diablo said, we are lucky compared to plenty of other "conventional" projects because we have seen way more from behind the scenes that gamers usually see from games under development. And as Spaghetti points out, we know for a fact from various interviews and comments from both Yu Suzuki and his entourage that the whole team is working 7 days a week in order to deliver what we have all dreamed of for 14 years before it finally became real.

I'm sure though that for most of the people, backers and fans, having the feeling that we don't know enough about what is going on with the development fuels an irrational fear that things may be going wrong. I do understand that feeling, but we need to keep calm and trust Yu.

(Should do a t-shirt or a mug with that)

It's so cool to see that the Shenmue 3 team keeps an eye on how things are going for the re-release of Shenmue I&II!

Re: Shenmue HD and franchise future

It's hard to predict what is going to happen with good preorders number but I'm pretty sure, as many of you, that it's a very important moment, if not for the franchise, maybe at least for Shenmue 1&2.

Shenmue fans continue to crush it on pre-orders! Was even number one in games on Amazon France! Keep up the momentum everyone, who knows what great things it could lead to! ;) Thank you @SEGA @SEGA_Europe for giving us the opportunity to prove our dedication! #ShenmueSaved

If what Adam said about a lot of things unannounced is true, we might as fans, still have some role to play for the final release (that's only assumption of course).

I wouldn't trust him; he doesn't mind his job, but he won't stay at it for very long. He's got a kid at home you see and he needs to support it...

I don't understand your message to be honest...
What do you mean by "I wouldn't trust him; he doesn't mind his job, etc..."?

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I saw a tweet by National Geographic about the The Fujian Tulou in my Twitter feed yesterday.

It reminded me how little we know yet about that part of Shenmue 3.

Re: New Shenmue III pics from THQ Nordic financial presentat

Nothing new but a nice summarization of the short new footage from the THQ video.

Re: Anyone disappointed with Shenmue 3 cartoon-like graphics

Personally, I love the graphics and the art direction. I find it refreshing.

Re: Kickstarter update #81 - Shenmue 3 delayed until 2019

Just came across this tweet this morning:
https://twitter.com/RDonlineNews/status/999310780880343040

NEWS: Rockstar Games CEO Strauss Zelnick confirms that Red Dead Redemption 2 will NOT be delayed again.

He also mentions that there are over 1000 people working on the game.

How many working for YsNet on Shenmue 3 (ok, without Lakshya Digital)? 45?

And there's still people out there whining about Shenmue 3 beeing delayed or not looking as good as a AAA title?

What a gamers generation...

Re: Possible Sony E3 Leak! [Mod note: It's absolutely not re

Let's take this as a confirmation that some more patience is needed for a Shenmue III appearance.

Cedric Biscay @CedricBiscay
I will not attend #E32018 let's meet at #Gamescom2018 ;)

Re: Possible Sony E3 Leak! [Mod note: It's absolutely not re

You are probably right about the lack of public announcement for this kind of presence, that said, last year the "meet & greet" wasn't announced right away but only confirmed later. I have no doubt the "meet & greet" was in their plans anyway but the first Gamescom update was about Yu Suzuki participating in the business area and giving the latest news about development. (I'm aware the whole purpose of being in Cologne was to announce the deal with Deep Silver)

Nevertheless, Cédric's tweet is pretty encouraging about both Shenmue III and Yu Suzuki presence at Gamescom.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I don't honestly think that another Kickstarter would work.

Shenmue III needs to be successful (enough).

Re: Possible Sony E3 Leak! [Mod note: It's absolutely not re

The logic want after the first Gameplay Trailer all games realase after one year minimum. Shenmue 3 have nothing, when the first (and true) beautiful and official trailer (not technical video) will be show at E3 2019 you can be sure the game will be realase after one year minimum. If you check all statistics of all videos games you will consider and discover the true about Shenmue 3 realase.

And what if the first GAMEPLAY TRAILER comes out in 2018?

I don't get this obsession with E3. There are other events in the gaming industry.
