Yu Suzuki talks about Shenmue 3 and memories

Succinct but interesting interview with Yu Suzuki by PlayStation Official Magazine UK (November 2017 issue)

- Shenmue 1 & 2 might be offered along with Shenmue 3. It seemed a no-brainer before Yu Suzuki thinks he should rather incorporate memories straight into the game.

- The Shenmue 1 & 2 memories you will get in Shenmue 3 might be playable but Suzuki remains "undecided".

- Yu Suzuki claims that memories are very well incorporated in the game and gives the example of a NPC guy able to tell you what happened before.

- In order to make the combat system simpler and visually different from Shenmue I & II, YSnet will use "Variable Speed". Suzuki did not give specific details.

- He emphasizes that the world of Shenmue III will be designed as a whole, rather than a sum of parts.

- Yu Suzuki gives few words on his position towards realism and VR in Shenmue III.

Read the issue for further details.

Re: Yu Suzuki talks about Shenmue 3 and memories

I would take that quote with a considerable pinch of salt, considering it was likely given at the same time as many other interviews in which he was prompting fans to ask Sega for Shenmue 1 & 2.

We must remember that not all journalists at Gamescom had their own Switch waiting in the wings to translate recordings of Yu's exact words.

Re: Yu Suzuki talks about Shenmue 3 and memories

Here is my translation of that Yu interview in the German magazine.
I didn't translate everything because some of the questions are just about Yu's hobbies etc.
I'm not a native english speaker, i tried my best.

Question 1 to Yu:
You said that Shenmue 3 will be bigger than you thought at first?

Yu's answer:
Yes, the game will probably be three times as big as i had in mind at the beginning. One of the villages has over 200 residents now instead of just 50. This village alone is five times bigger than i had in mind.

Question 2 to Yu:
But still - Shenmue 3 has not the same budget as 1 or 2. What do you have to change in the game because of that?

Yu's answer:
The story is still intact but i had to adjust some of the extra elements and details. We talked about the 200 people in that village - maybe we will even have 400 in the end, i didn't decide yet. You have to remember that all the city / village residents in 1 & 2 had a "real" simulated life, thats a really complicated and tough quest and the budget for Shenmue 3 is probably not big enough to do that again.

Question 3 to Yu:
Will there be voices and sound for everything in the game?

Yu's answer:
We don't know yet. To tell the truth - the amount of text is getting bigger and bigger and not all of it is planned, so we don't know if all of it will be available with sound.

Question 4 to Yu:
Will you use the voice actors from 1 & 2?

Yu's answer:
Ryo's english and japanese voice will be the same in Shenmue 3. I can't tell you anything about the other people yet.

Question 5 to Yu:
Shenmue 3 will be only available on PS4 and PC, why is that?

Yu's answer:
That's simple - it's just because of our partnership with Sony and their support at the E3 2015.

Question 6 to Yu:
Did you ever thought about how you could tell the story without a real Shenmue 3?

Yu's answer:
Yes, i thought about a mobile game before.

Question 7 to Yu:
There were a lot of critical responses for the Shenmue 3 teaser. What would you tell the people who feel dissappointed?

Yu's answer:
We don't have any facial expressions in the game right now and none of the character models are final yet. So it will look different and better in the final game. The teaser is not representing the quality of the final game, we are still in the middle of developing. And of course you have to remember the budget. The budget is good enough for our game, but its pretty small if you compare it to other games right now. We can't keep up with big modern games. We would need a way bigger budget (ten times bigger than now) to make perfect modern graphics. So we need to find a good middle way between good graphics and good content. Please don't expect highend graphics, Shenmue 3 is not about that.

Re: Yu Suzuki talks about Shenmue 3 and memories

In other interviews at Gamescom he raised the matter of minigames/distractions in Shenmue 1 & 2 feeling disconnected from the rest of the game, so in Shenmue 3 he wants to tie everything together to give such elements more relevance and make them feel part of the same, interconnected world. This may be what he was referring to in this one too.

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

It's just a test video showing off some work in progress facial animations. Why are people crying about this? It is in no way, shape or form indicative of the final product so why are some idiots treating it like that? Damn, gamers are a freaking whiny bunch.
Technophilz decided the game is shit the day after the Kickstarter ended and just wants to spread misery on the forum. I don't have a problem with criticism...I think I'm one of the more critical people on the forum, but he seems to thrive on bashing the game and Yu Suzuki.

He shows up whenever a new update drops and lets rip, then clears off until the next one arrives. Rinse and repeat.
I don't think I ever remember him posting anything positive to balance things out.

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

The clip was easy to criticize- at first look most people are going to think its Mass Effect Andromeda awkwardness.
They need to literally explain "now, this is just a test- notice the T pose and the eyes aren't tracking, so they just look straight, but here the animator is going through some facial expressions... and now in sync with dialogue. Coming along nicely- can't wait to see it all working together"
True. They should be slightly more careful with their progress reports from now on since more non-fans are keeping an eye on the game after the progress teaser. The facial animation controversy was mostly over by now but this video provoked similar comments again. Explaining better what they're doing and what the end goals are would help a bit. Stuff like this could otherwise start creating lasting negative impressions which a returning series doesn't need.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I have information on the new update

Ryo's model is done and Shenmue 3 gameplay at PSX

Complete and utter bollocks.

What reputable credentials or sources do you have to verify your claims or cement you as an industry insider? I see nothing on Twitter or ResetERA to corroborate your information.

This is wishful thinking, folks. I do believe Shenmue III will be at PSX, probably HD as well, but to expect gameplay is a bit far fetched.

I base my prediction on Yu's statement of ramping up promotion near the year's end and PSX is the only stage capable of doing so, or maybe The Game Awards, but the former has the best shot.

People think Sony fired their heaviest guns at Paris, but I disagree. They still haven't shown Shenmue III, Resident Evil 2 REmake, FFVII, Dreams, Days Gone or other hits they have lined up.

At best we will get a nicely done cinematic trailer, but gameplay still has to be too early to show in my book.

Take it for what it's worth, but I would say to keep your expectations in check.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I think this news doesn't rule anything out specifically, but we already knew not to expect anything related to Shenmue 3 anyway unless it was announced in advance.
My statement above still stands, but...the exhibitor list for PSX 2017 was announced today and Deep Silver has a booth this year. They were not present at all last year, and I can't find any details of them being present at any major US game conventions in the past year. They were not at PAX East, they were not at E3, and they were not at PAX West.
https://blog.us.playstation.com/2017/11/16/playstation-experience-2017-more-than-80-exhibitors-confirmed/

Now, keep in mind that Deep Silver is a publisher and has other games coming out next year besides Shenmue 3, however I still found their presence to be notable. Cross-referencing the list of confirmed games for the show, the only Deep Silver title that I saw was Kingdom Come: Deliverance. While very it's possible that their booth is just to promote that one game since it's due out in February, it's kind of interesting that they'll be at the show. It might be a good opportunity to strike up a conversation with any of their PR people who might be present.

Shenmue voice cast reunites for hurricane relief

Members of Shenmue's English voice cast have unofficially reprised their roles to support charitable relief efforts in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean following the recent series of hurricanes.

To hear new dialog from the familiar voices of Ryo, Xiuying, Fuku-san and more, check out the video and full report and consider donating to the cause.

Re: Shenmue voice cast reunites for hurricane relief

Just donated a little bit of money. I hope it helps.

On a Shenmue note: Paul needs to really get those Lan Di and Chai voices back on track. He sounded a bit off, dind't he? Oh, and they really need to let a guy voice Yuan this time, if he will be in S3, that is.

But on the other hand, Corey, Lisle and Eric sounded great. Glad, to hear they still got their roles down.

Re: Update #76: Say Hello to the Deep Silver Promotion Team

Can't help but to express my frustation. We are a few days away from what was the original Intended release date for this game when the Kickstarter ended and have yet to see a single glimpse of gameplay, in-detail scenario or even characters besides some random NPC.

My hype and overall expectations are reaching an all time low and I am beggining to forget about his game altogether.
Come on now. With the agile methodology, the game isn't fully polished until the final stages of development. They could show plenty now, but it would be rough and there would be plenty of placeholders, but dummies would take it for the final build. You can't exactly blame them for holding their cards close to their chest.

Re: Update #77: New Character & Lakshya Digital

Great update in my eyes! New character looks amazing, and very fitting for the Shenmue world.

After looking up the company Lakshya Digital, it is clear that they are very good at what they do, as they have works on some great AAA games (Uncharted 2, WWE, Just Cause). They clearly know what they are doing and this first character looks perfect. If they can take the brunt of the work load for the NPCs, and allow Yu to focus his time elsewhere, then it is a win win situation!

As they say in the update, I am very eager to see how this looks in motion/in game.

I was also looking at the dates updates running up to Xmas for the last 2 years, to see what we can roughly expect this year. By going off the last 2 years, we should probably get another Update on Xmas Eve, and maybe one around the New Year (we got one last year (2016), but not for 2015).

Super excited to see the next Dev Update!

Update #78: Then, Now and Tomorrow

Dear Backers,

On June 16th, 2015 this project began on Kickstarter. It has been two and a half years, but at the top of 2016 we were able to bring our team together to begin development in earnest, so it has been about two years now since things have really started moving.

For the development team that time has flown by, although with the many comments and questions we have received from you, the time may have felt more drawn out for some backers.

Next year is a very important year for Shenmue, so with that, we would like to bring you a conversation with Yu Suzuki and Hiroaki Takeuchi on how far we have come and where we are going from here.

About Hiroaki Takeuchi As an animation producer, he has contributed to an abundance of works that have helped bridge Japan with the rest of the world. His exemplary works include “The Animatrix”, “Tekkon Kinkreet” and “Berserk”. He acts as the CG animation producer for the Shenmue series. For more information on Hiroaki Takeuchi and his work, we invite you to his website .

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ84uxIQBr8

Thank you for all of your support here on the updates and at the events throughout the year!

I agree, this would be very useful - although a big job to go in now and apply them retroactively.
It was an oversight at first, but the bigger and bigger the OP became, the more it became a case of laziness on my part. I'll work on this at the weekend, hopefully, now I know it's something people would like :)
