Re: New Members Introduce Yourself!

Welcome, Gyo6161 and Tpgb12.

@Gyo: It's amazing that Shenmue can turn people into passionate fans, even after all those years. Don't worry about English. There are lots of non-native speakers here. :)

@Tpgb12: Again, your case shows how powerful and beautiful Shenmue is. A 16 year-old who first plays Shenmue in 2015 and becomes a fan. Wow! Just Wow! Welcome to the Shenmue Family!

I was 16 when I first played Shenmue. What can one say? You saved yourself 14 years of waiting, young man. You may perhaps never know the sweet feeling of joy, gratification and relief which I felt when S3 was announced. But on the other hand, you didn't have to live with that feeling of emptiness, that void which Shenmue 2's ending had left within my soul for well more than a decade.

Most of the people on this forum are about 30 years old now. Old people from your point of view. But don't worry, you'll hit 30 before you know it. :)

It makes me happy to see that Shenmue has been living on, even with younger players. :)

Welcome to the family, both of you!

Re: Shenmue 3 dreams

It would suck if you woke up and it was June 15th and you realized the last 8 months were just a dream and there IS NO SHENMUE 3....

I would basically be like Cypher from the Matrix and demand to go back into the dream even knowing the dream world with Shenmue 3 wasn't technically real.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

damn, technology is sure a beuty, playing shenmue 1 on the bus today on my nvidia shield using reicast, what a day were living in.
How did it run, dude?
on the nvidia shield portable, aside from some visual glitches like ryos eyes are a little iffy and some textures here and there, it ran full speed, i did use one of the ''non stable'' reicast builds, ironically though it runs shenmue better than the current ''stable'' build. The alpha effects like dust in my experience feature a sorta greenish look to it, however it looks better than the null dc build i have on my pc since it there it kinda looks pixely and weird, overall is awesome. The triigers also work property as i can make ryo walk exacly how im holding the trigger. Havent tried the arcade games thought
Awesome! I've absolutely no experience with emulating Shenmue on anything before, but it's great to hear it's fully playable on a portable device :)

Re: Dual Shockers Yu Suzuki Interview

#-o i hope that the 30fps PS4 thing doesn't mean that PC is also gonna be locked at 30.

also i will be kinda strange imo to have a romance with shenhua honestly (from what i understood of the interview) i never saw the whole ryo/shenhua relationship like that. Also making fights more cinematic? hmm.. interesting.

If it is, we can have it unlocked to 60. It's pc, don't worry.

Re: Shenmue's music is healthy

Almost all of the music is sample based, so it's generated in real time. That's how they could fit so much music in the game without it sounding compressed. Exceptions are the intro, wich is compressed streaming audio and Wish on disc 3, wich is played as a CD track.

Re: Kickstarter Update #47

Hey Guys, new to the forums (Kind of. Registered years ago but forgot the username and password but never posted!)

Anyways, I write tutorials (C++) over at Epic Games for Unreal Engine 4 and help people out on the AnswerHub and work on projects all the time with this Engine. I've done so for quite some time now. Why am I telling you this? Because hopefully I can provide a little insight on what you're seeing and why.

The reflective properties on Ryo's Jacket is just the material. The material hasn't been properly adjusted yet and even so let's not forget about the lighting that goes into a scene. Typically it's something you'll want to play with over and over again until you can get it just right. I'm assuming they're going to have a day to night cycle and that means a scene will have dynamic lighting. This can effect a material whether it's on a character, a static mesh actor( Think of an object) or general decals (assuming they want them lit or not.). This means it will constantly be tweaked from now until release.

The jacket will probably be toned down abit but it is obvious that they're still experimenting with the lighting. They're also not utilizing any Post Processing at the moment and if they are it's only for a slight color node but I don't think they're using any in the second and fourth screenshot. I think it goes without saying that this will change and right now they're experimenting with an engine that they probably never used before so it takes abit of time and energy to figure these large frameworks out.

It's an exciting time for all of us as Shenmue fans and of course we want this to be the best it can be but try to remember that this project is going to see alot of changes from now until release.

Re: Shenmue 3 Opening Scenes

I wonder whether the cut scenes will fade to black in Shenmue III. Some people don't like this and prefer something like MGS V/Quantum Break style while I think it sucks. Dreamcast could not support this type of cinematic transition so Yu is free to decide this time.
I hope so, they also better bring back the classical loading screens... but i believe that those kickstarter videos used them so i wouldn't understand if they got rid of them in Shenmue 3. Is like the Resident Evil Door screens, they are iconic.

Totally agree man we need those loading screens!

Re: What movie are you watching right now?

LOL @ star wars newbies "ep 4 is dated"

But really though, ep 1 isnt as bad as people make it out to be. I personally think episode 2 is the worst of the prequels, 3 is the best, the prequels in general arent that bad to me either. I think some hardcore star wars fans pointed out certain things and brought down the prequels in general, outside of jar jar and the corny/badly acted attempt at romance in ep 2 its really not that bad imo.

I found difficult siting through episodes 1 and 2 TBH. If it wasn't for the brand name I wouldn't bother watching them at all. Now for episode 3 I revisited it recently and I actually liked it better than The Return of the Jedi. So to me Lucas finished strong in the end. Definitely no hate for the guy.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

I just played Yakuza 1, 2 and 4 at my friends and in my opinion IT IS NOT like Shenmue! It's an OKAY
videogame overall. What a bunch of noobers claiming that it's a spiritual successor. Such violent pound-to-pound combat that isin't even representative of what Shenmue's FREE Battles were. Kazuma cannot even control his moves and everything is bat shit crazy.

What! So after all this time, it's just an asian guy that beats up people and is set in Japan so somehow people believe it's a spiritual successor. I do not care about Yakuza story and find the game to have appeal for people without patience.I know that professional game reviewers claim it is spiritual successor to Shenmue but NO, WRONG.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

You can hate on the English voice acting of Shenmue II (or I) all you want, but there's no denying that that version of Delin is superior. I'd never played the original Dreamcast version until recently, and was surprised by how dull and depressing Japanese Delin is. Even his grunts suck in comparison.

Shenmue I & II 16:9 & Black Bars Auto Fixer - Updated

Hello everyone,

Thanks to the great work of dojo members Esppiral , Sappharad and others, we are now able to play Shenmue and Shenmue II in a proper widescreen format and with almost no clipping. Moreover, we are also able to remove the annoying black bars from Shenmue II's cutscenes.

So I made two utilities that can save you time when applying the widescreen/no clipping fixes and also to remove the black bars from "all" the cutscenes in Shenmue II automatically.

The first utility supports the EU version of Shenmue I and Shenmue II

http://i.imgur.com/lHtzAmc.png

The second utility supports What's Shenmue, and the JP version of Shenmue I and Shenmue II

http://i.imgur.com/fFBLtjI.png

Sample Screenshots:

So I made a utility that can save you time when applying the widescreen/no clipping fixes to Shenmue I (game and passport discs) and Shenmue II, and the utility will also remove the black bars from "all" the cutscenes automatically.

The two utilities will work with any version of Demul, and they may also requires the latest version of Cheat Engine to be installed, so it's already included with the utility.

Here's a nice video tutorial on how to use the tool by BlueMue

Shenmue dubs have so much charm.... it really makes me happy shen 3 is getting dubbed. a sub only s3 would have sucked imo.
Well, I don't think it would be a case of sucking simply because it lacked an English dub - many of us played Shenmue II that way and it was fine - but having English voice acting is definitely a nice consideration, as bad (though mega charming) as it may be.

It really makes me wonder how good the voice acting in Shenmue III will be, especially now that video games have evolved astronomically since the early 2000s and good voice-over talent isn't so few-and-far between nowadays. Add the fact that the direction might not be so robotic and emotionless as it was back then and we might be pleasantly surprised. Heck, Shenmue III might even give the most unknown voice actors their big break.

Re: Anyone else prefer the English dub?

Can't stand reading subtitles, it's just distracting. Doesn't bother me when it makes sense for certain scenes or situations (Inglorious Basterds is a good example of this), but to sit through a film and having to read the entire time? No thank you. So obviously in a dialogue-heavy game like Shenmue, it can fuck right off. Dub any day of the week. Except match days, then everything else can fuck off too.

I also agree that voice acting for a game like shenmue is not cheap and I prefer just one dub.

But I don't think it'll be a smart business decision. If it was me I'll probably go with only eng, but I don't think this'll be the case.

Shenmue VHS Promo video - now subtitled!

I've added English subtitles to a quirky short VHS video that promoted the upcoming release of Shenmue. Requested by BlueMue.

It's voiced in Japanese by none other than that lovable rogue Chai. Interesting choice of salesman...

Edit: presumably the line about "no movies" is referring to the fact it doesn't use pre-rendered FMV clips (unlike many of the games back then).

Awesome seeing this with subs even if its short.

I also can't help but notice that a lot of these prototype videos have higher quality sound effects even on a VHS source like this, like some sound effects sound clearer... i wonder if this is uncompressed audio data they were using for the promotion.
I would imagine so; they did the same with Shenmue: The Movie , did they not? I was always shocked by the difference in audio quality between the game and the movie. It was weird, but still cool to hear it presented in that way.
