Re: December 2017 is fastly approaching!

To be honest, I think the December 2017 date was only ever picked because they never thought the Kickstarter would be such a success, i.e. they thought they'd just reach the $2 million goal, and have to make a barebones sequel without much in the way of game mechanics.

Lucky for us, the Kickstarter was a resounding success, and I'm happy with waiting as long as it takes for the game to be the best it can be.

Yu Suzuki Interview: Champion Boxing, Shenmue [ENG]

I've posted up a translation of an interview with Yu Suzuki that was published in January by Famitsu.com to commemorate the release of a new games collection by Sega that has ties to some of his old arcade hits.

In it, Suzuki gives his feelings towards Champion Boxing, and also talks briefly about Shenmue III, revealing how the Dreamcast console is playing its part in the development.

Re: Shenmue 1 and 2 HD on Steam?

Spags, I think I didn't phrase it properly.

I don't mean it to say it excludes console(obviously not), it just lends a little more credence to the existence of the game in my opinion.

Re: December 2017 is fastly approaching!

I honestly think game media will shit on the game regardless of whether it achieves what backers wanted simply on the virtue of it being a kickstarter that got time on Sony's E3 stage. it's another opportunity for faux outrage and extra clicks

Update 2! Video 2 on The Harbor!
https://youtu.be/6sMqic_P02g
Hi Everyone.

I recently went to Japan for vacation/business and decided to take a trip to Yokosuka for some research.

Big thanks to Switch for showing me around :D

We took many photos of The Harbor and Dobuita Street which you can find below! We took lots of video footage too which will be uploaded at a later time to my Youtube channel.

It is amazing that even in 2017, Shenmue still is an accurate representation of Dobuita Street!

If you want to travel to Dobuita, feel free to PM me any questions you may have!

We ran into another Shenmue Fan who made a blog out of our visit here:
https://oninokokoro.wordpress.com/2017/04/04/%e6%a8%aa%e9%a0%88%e8%b3%80%e5%b8%82%e3%81%ae%e3%80%8c%e3%81%a9%e3%81%b6%e6%9d%bf%e9%80%9a%e3%82%8a%e3%80%8dyokosuka-citys-dobuita-street-%e7%a5%9e%e5%a5%88%e5%b7%9d/

I spoiler tagged each section of photos since there are 90+ photos in total!

Enjoy!

Re: December 2017 is fastly approaching!

I've been re reading the Kickstarter page and rewatching vídeos they put in every Kickstarter update. Oh, and seeing one time and another every picture they released about Shenmue 3. The wait until E3 it's going to be very hard! I'm eager to see some new pictures and vídeo, some days are harder than others and today is one of those days that you can not stop to try to obtain new info about the development of Shenmue 3! [-(

Re: December 2017 is fastly approaching!

Just quickly read the interview, Cedric basically said that 1) Shenmue 3 project initially stalled because people "having rights over it" (Sega) didnt even wanna start talking about it, 2) Sony decided to help after the game got backed, 3) Cedric thinks the remasters of Shen 1&2 would help a lot with the marketing of the game but they depend on Sega, he cant do much about it.

Re: December 2017 is fastly approaching!

2) Sony decided to help after the game got backed

Factoring in previous statements, I believe he's referring to the fact that when Sony got in contact, Yu and Cedric were already in the planning stages and looking at Kickstarter to boost Shibuya Productions' own backing. Sony then offered their stage at E3 to announce it, and probably made a provisional offer of additional support if the Kickstarter proved successful (which it quickly did). If the Kickstarter had flopped then E3 might have been the end of Sony's involvement.

Full translation (Probably not as accurate as it would be the other way round).

Q: Right now, you are producing Shenmue 3, which is still in development. How did things go with Sega and Sony to finally achieve this?

Cédric Biscay :To be fair, I would say it was possible in the first place thanks to the original author, Yu Suzuki. I know him very well and met him several times. At first, it was impossible to seriously consider a sequel to Shenmue 2, because the Licence owners (SEGA) didn't want to hear about it. Over time, we (Shibuya Productions) and Yu Suzuki wanted to work together on a game. So we launched a project who could not be completed in the end. At the same time, the situation about Shenmue 3 changed and Shibuya Productions decided to produce it. It's also at this time that we chose to work with crowdfunding, in order to check if the Community (fan base) was large enough and if it could help us funding the game.
Ultimately, the decision to make Shenmue 3 comes from Yu Suzuki and Shibuya Productions. Of course, SEGA allows us to use the licence, since they are the owners of the Shenmue franchise. Actually, Sony comes in a second phase, once they saw that everything was secured, that fundings were provided to support the project.
They (Sony) helped us a lot in terms of communication, in particular during E3 (2015) in Los Angeles, when we did the big announcement. And then of course, they will soon participate actively with the game marketing.

Q: So, Shenmue 3 will come out for PC and PS4, right?

Cédric Biscay : That's right, still planned for PC & PS4.

Q: And for Xbox One ? It seems to me they were disagreements on the matter?

Cédric Biscay : Not specifically disagreement, it's more that Microsoft showed late interest in having Shenmue 3 compared to Sony. Obviously, it's easier to want something when everything is easily accessible. We must remember that way before E3 in Los Angeles, everybody was thinking "Well, Shenmue 3 will never come out, it is a bit of a holy grail" or "the first two games didn't sell well enough so nobody will be interested in Shenmue 3". Truth is, from the moment we decided we would bypass/avoid those obstacles, a lot more people showed interest in being part of the adventure.

Q: Since we talk about Shenmue 3, do you have some exclusive news for us? Release date or story elements for example, etc...?

Cédric Biscay : It's not the right time for exclusive news. I'm always surprised that people ask me on a regular basis about the release date because actually, we gave one right from the start and it hasn't changed to this day. It's April 15 right? To this day, Shenmue 3 is still planned for a December 2017 release date. The situation can evolve but there are no contradicting elements at the moment. In any case, we are not running late with development. It doesn't mean we cannot encounter last-minute hitch or whatever. Anyhow, to this day, the development team didn't report any problem to me.

Q: There is also a rumour about HD remasters of the first two Shenmue and apparently, they should come out this year. Do you know if they will really come out this year? Real facts or fiction ?

Cédric Biscay : First of all, ever since the beginning of the project, this is what we would like to happen. Apparently, it’s something SEGA wants too. It’s only my personal opinion but there’s every chance that SEGA has an interest for those remasters, especially considering all the hype surrounding Shenmue 3. So, I cannot officially confirm the remasters, since I don’t work at SEGA, but it seems logical to me that those games come out eventually. What we would really like to see though, is those games released before Shenmue 3 comes out. This would help us a lot with the marketing but would also bring new players to the Series, because to be fair, start a Saga with the third episode isn’t very cool. If people have played the remasters first, it would be much more fun.

Q : About Shenmue 3 gameplay. Is it going to reach a wide audience, that is to say those who already know the franchise and the new comers ?

Cédric Biscay : That’s what we aim for. That’s what we included with Yu Suzuki in the game. Actually, what we really don’t want, is disappoint the fans. This is essential. And we don’t want to cut our self off from the gamers, this is as simple as that. Therefore, we try to balance things for everybody to be happy but not by making the game hard. It’s essential to keep everybody happy in the true sense of the word. We don’t want to diminish aspects to please others. We want everybody to be happy with the game, this is our goal.

Re: BluePoint Games at work on a "Classic" remake.

...but his wording is striking. Is Demon's Souls really considered a classic? It probably is, I just have a harder time seeing last gen stuff as old when it comes to ports :/.

If we're going to dissect the language, then we'd be remiss to not question the phrase "project to please the masses." Shenmue's fan base, whilst larger than many gave it credit for, most commonly tends to be described in terms of passion rather than size. Few would really consider Shenmue fans at this point to be "the masses" - though of course we hope that these remasters will help towards changing that (whoever makes them).

Re: BluePoint Games at work on a "Classic" remake.

I'm the same, but i am comparing the term "classic" on its own and I'd have to give that to Shenmue over DS. Also, it seems the PSU article slapped on the "PlayStation" to the classic statement from the Bluepoint feature. I dunno, but i know i want it to be true more so than anything, and that's what makes it dangerous. Even if we get a HD announcement from another developer, i now have it in my brain how fucking awesome it would be if Bluepoint were developing it.

Inside its like a big classroom. Suzuki-san is at the head table and each member of staff has daily meetings at scheduled times where they bring their work up to him. Okayasu-san sits just to the right of the main table at his own desk, then all the other staff, old and new are together. Learning and working. Sometimes Suzuki-sanwill do a walkabout and see what you are working on at that present point in time.

Re: Will Slot Machines return in Shenmue III?

I'm still not understanding the slot house's appeal.
Personally, it's just a nice bit of extra texture to the world. Do I visit the slot houses often in Shenmue/Shenmue II? Nah, but it's nice that they're there.

Like I said in my earlier post, a beat up slot machine in the warehouse arcade in III would be nice; if only because it would add to the lived-in feel.

I agree with that.

Mystical elements are intrinsic to the game's plot. Seriously, if it bothers you then you've spent fifteen years pining over the wrong franchise, because that's just what Shenmue is, like it or not.

Re: Shenmue 3 & E3 2017

Absolutely. PSX was proof that the team itself can change their minds at the drop of a hat, so it's best to be prepared for that, and in life in general at all times.

But, the difference is this. If Shenmue 3 didn't exist then absolutely yes, topics like this and hype in general would be unwarranted. It wouldn't be right to drum up excitement since that really is encouraging false hope, based upon nothing but hopes and dreams. But that's not the case. We have Shenmue 3. It's coming! Not only can we look forward with excitement to any future E3, but from 2015, it can also be used to look back nostalgically and remember that infamous night 2 years ago. It will always be the birthdate of Shenmue 3, and every year for a very long time, E3 will be synonymous with Shenmue for a lot of people.

So let's enjoy it! (and could someone kick this thread off right and throw in a few Shenmue gifs.)

Re: Shenmue 3 & E3 2017

I was talking about it with Adam earlier today, and that's what we were told. Black and white. Plans had changed obviously, but either way, it shouldn't hinder being excited about any opportunity where Shenmue 3 could potentially be shown in some capacity.

If people want to use PSX as an example of why we shouldn't get excited about anything then what would you propose? Sit under a rain cloud and moan about all aspects of Shenmue? I don't think so, go find another platform to encourage that type of mentality. 15 years waiting on Shenmue 3 and I will embellish every E3 and every event until the game is released because from the announcement in 2015 until the day the game is released, we are in a very privelidged and special time of our life's to revel in every question surrounding what this game could be. One day we will all blast through it and.... then what?

I am going to enjoy everyday of May as I normally do, reading tidbits that become more frequent as the event draws closer. As a gamer, it's the best time of the year, and with Shenmue in the mix, it only makes it better. We are going to put thought and planning into Twitch broadcast special episodes, and fully embrace E3 2017. If anyone doesn't want to be part of that and wants to cast doom and gloom over the part of the year which celebrates videogames as a whole, then politely go find other outlets that suit your outlook. Any Shenmue fan with his/her salt knows the trials and disappointment experienced every year since 2003 and regardless of an appearance or no show at a huge event like PSX or E3, unless Shenmue 3 is suddenly cancelled, these are always the best moments of the year.

Did they say see you next month in the last update? I feel like they normally say that. They've got to have an update after E3 anyways, after Shenmue 1 and 2 HD and 3 trailer is shown off obviously right \:D/ ?

Right
...There must be an update after the reveal trailer and Shenmue HD announcement! [-o<

PS. Yes, they said "See you next month!" in the update #65.
Since the videos were filmed on Saturday April 15th, I feel like they probably had intended to post it last week but didn't get around to it until this morning.

Also, the fact that they're working on Saturdays tells me that they're still trying really hard to make December.

Doing something nice for Shenmue III team

We've been talking about this off and on. We've had the idea of thanking the team for their hard work. This includes Shibuya Productions and YS Net. I think in the final or so year of development, it would really give a boost of morale for the team. They truly deserved to be thanked in a real, authentic manner that is deserving of the Shenmue fanbase.

This thread is for ideas. ShenGCH had the idea of a massive card that is signed by various Shenmue fans around the world. I had the idea of giving the team a fruit basket.

Any idea would be nice. We are currently coordinating teaming up with Shenmue 500k and possibly Team Yu to see what we can get off the ground because the team deserves support and thanks, and if the industry won't do it, like always we'll carry this by ourselves.

Re: Doing something nice for Shenmue III team

A nice gesture, but I think they can treat themselves with the $6,000,000+ we gave them.
I'm not sure I understand the thought process here.

The monetary value of whatever we give them doesn't actually matter, it's more of a morale thing.

Either way, nobody's forcing anyone to do anything.

If there are people here willing to do a gesture to raise the team morale, they are free to do it and nobody shall try to convince them that they got enough money to buy wine, food, fruits or whatever by themselfs.
It's not the point of the topic.

Re: Ryo's face

I'm a 3D artist. I work mostly in video but do have a little bit of experience rigging and animating characters for games as well. Obviously I don't know any specifics about what's going on at YSnet. I can say it would be a fairly simple matter to build a new model based on the older model. Rigging it to enable more nuanced expressions and set up controls for the animators could be time-consuming, but certainly a reasonable task overall. My speculation is that it's just not been the highest priority yet, as they've been focusing on prototyping and developing the various types of gameplay. Ultimately I don't think it will be difficult to match the appearance of the previous Ryo, but I wonder if Yu Suzuki would like to evolve the art direction somewhat and that will lead to some iterations of Ryo's appearance as he works out his subjective opinion on the look.

(Edit for more bloviating:) I'd say this ties into another set of factors, which is the new engine running the game and the advances that have been made in materials and lighting. Even the original models would look somewhat different (in color balance and apparent material attributes) if imported directly into UE4. Take Ryo's jacket, for example. We've already seen some work-in-progress renders that show a more realistic material. Compared to the original jacket texture, it's a big difference. The original textures tried to convey characteristics like folds and shininess all within the color channel. These days those material attributes are broken up into multiple maps (bump maps and normal maps for details in the depth of the surface, specularity and environmental reflection maps to convey the shininess of materials, and so on). So the technical challenge of matching the exact geometric topology of Ryo's face is negligible, but the artisitic challenge of defining a new art direction that utilizes current tech while not diverging too much from the original style could be quite difficult.
