Re: Sega Europe: Shenmue 1 and 2 remakes have our full atten

Crazy Taxi's port is arguably greatly diminished in lacking crucial licences like the soundtrack, and their learning experience for that spurred them to work towards mostly undoing the legal knot that was Jet Set Radio's soundtrack.

I remember buying the PSN port of Crazy Taxi and being so disappointed that they changed the soundtrack. I could live with the store names being changed, but it's just not Crazy Taxi without "YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!"

Re: Demul v0.7 alpha build 160818 - Updated 19/08/16

Quick question - is the 160818 build linked in here more advanced than the 180816 build on the Demul website? I figured higher number is better, but some of the old build numbers start with a 2.

alpha build 160816 was released in 16 August 2016 --> 16(year)08(month)16(day)
alpha build 160818 was released in 18 August 2016 --> 16(year)08(month)18(day)

thus, 160816 is older than the latest 160818, it's always easier to grab the latest version from the link in the OP ...

I have no words guys. My mind and body have been stretched to the limits in Japan, from partying with voice actors, Sega staff and Shenmue 3 developers, the dinner with Yu-san, a Shenmue pilgrimage of all Shenmue pilgrimages and secrets galore (some not even Shenmue related!!!).......

Re: Giant Bomb: Shenmue Endurance Run (Ongoing)

[...] The original pales in comparison to the sequel in terms of clarity of story and mechanics, but good god, you'd think the game was a crazed fever dream the way things are playing out in there.

Shenmue I especially, requires patient attention (and it isn't about intelligence). Shenmue II has a more streamlined version of the F.R.E.E. formula, for sure. However, personally, the first time I played SII I got disappointed, because it felt like you are on rails; you're taken from event to event hastily. The change of pace from SI to SII makes you feel dizzy and lost. I wish I hadn't bought the maps the first time, because that altered negatively the sense of exploration. I appreciate, though, that this is a change in how you feel in a strange and threatening place (like how Ryo would feel).

For all that, this is what makes me to consider SI as a favourite compared to SII. Because, in the first, you are one with the world. The pace, atmosphere, all the audiovisual sensory, the small scale, the NPCs who are much more believable and lively etc, contribute way better to stay in the "zone", to be fully immersed in the surroundings. Let's not forget the level of deep detail, especially in the Hazuki residence (which has so much but not so fully utilized potential).

Gamers have all the rights to consider Shenmue as a bad/terrible game and the freedom to mock it, if that makes them feel better. They don't understand, then, why this series is so beloved. The easiest solution for them: consider fans as lunatics or assholes... But why they do that?

Let's put aside controls and voice acting, though. I never had a problem with either one of those. Controls need you, again, to apply effortful attention, especially in space orientation terms on a structured space; some gamers expect to move the joystick and just have the avatar slide through. Voice acting never bothered me, because 1) I am not a native English speaker, so the accent does not sound strange to my ears, 2) it really makes you laugh (euphoria feelings) and adds to the charm (such a cliche phrase, but true...) and it creates memorable lines.

They try to find fixed and trusted game elements in Shenmue. Pure gaming elements. But Shenmue, by definition, tried to overcome the taboos and the traditional, to transcend them. It seems to me that, their gaming backgrounds favour fast paced and GTA-like games ( eg ) and/or ones that favour action first (frequent fighting events). Also, they need the game to tell them what to do.

In Shenmue there's a linear storyline to follow, and then the freedom to proceed when you want. It favours culture representation and interaction with the world, with a quality that makes it feel real; earthly, grounded, rudimentary and with the everyday-realities (interactive lifelike audiovisual experience) . It's also pro-social; converse with anyone and be kind. And, at specific occasions, to act altruistically.

Yu Suzuki himself said (in the Project Berkley video) that he wanted to create a mind-calm, soothing gaming experience with Shenmue. To portray the romance and mystique of the cultures featured. A think-based approach, with expectations for your heart to be touched emotionally; feelings of warmth. How to explain it... a visceral/gut feeling that you are organically one with what is being shown on the screen.

We shouldn't expect to see the day when the vast majority of people will show respect for this series. It has a lot of idiosyncrasies that only certain people (but certainly not few, as it was believed some time ago) will relate to and be enchanted/entranced by.

The worst feeling, at the end of the day, when writing about Shenmue (and its acceptance or not by players), is that you haven't covered everything about all these...

In case someone thought about the following: What...? Pseudo-intellectual? Haha! Just writing out thoughts. I am not trying to deceive you; just trying to explain what I think.

Boom got it :) Went to TGS with Peter and Adam Sipione. Awesome item :) http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160918/19aa15b3bc16a8c2348677f91418c13e.jpg
Nice, how many attempts did it take? With only a 4% chance of a hit, that's an extremely elusive item!
Incredibly.. I got it on my first try. Peter and Adam not so much.. i'll leave them to comment on how many times cause I sure as hell lost count. In the end, its an extremely rare official item that im proud to have joining my collection. :)

Place name titles (What's Shenmue)

I found this set of place name titles that were left on the What's Shenmue disk, referring to major locations in the full game.

While some of them are seen on loading screens of Shenmue I & II, some like the Ship were not used.

Guess we'll be seeing the last one in a year or two!

Re: Playstation Experience - December 2016

I would say to look forward to the event.

Spags I've been thinking about it a lot and people need to be careful about MAGIC 17. I haven't booked yet, and despite it being almost a lock that Suzuki-san will be there due to his relationship wit Shibuya Productions, they still haven't announced him as a guest, when he was the first to be announced for 2016. Of course Cedrics reply to Arnaud does seem to indicate he will be there, but we are also still waiting on a PC Paypal option almost a year later after a separate cryptic tweet.

Another reason I would be more inclined to believe he may not be there is because if what I think is going to happen before the year is out does indeed happen, then there's no way they could follow that up with something as equally as impressive a couple of months later at Monaco. Plus, we will be down to the last 10 months of production so it will be full steam ahead, and avoid 15 hour trips around the world.

I'm curious to see how it plays out.

Well don't go on my word lol. I'm just trying to keep everyone happy and positive. Yes, YSNET have been quiet with the last proper content drop being 7 months ago, but think about it. They have been working hard and we are getting to the stage where we will see the fruits of that hard work.

Just stay a little bit more patient, and look forward to the future! :D

Now that you mention it, Yu doesn't appear on MAGIC Monaco's 2017 guest list, despite being top of the pile in 2016's listings. Not that the incomplete guest list is any smoking gun, but you'd think given Yu and Cedric's working relationship they'd have a good enough idea of whether the production schedule will allow for the trip or not.

I think, even if Yu doesn't turn up, we'll probably get a batch of new screens. MAGIC still gets some exposure thanks to Shenmue III, Yu doesn't have to leave production for a few days; everybody wins.

Another reason I would be more inclined to believe he may not be there is because if what I think is going to happen before the year is out does indeed happen, then there's no way they could follow that up with something as equally as impressive a couple of months later at Monaco. Now this is interesting. You're in a better position than any of us to know what's coming, so you're probably going to be right about this. I can't wait to see what they have up their sleeve for Shenmue III.

I'm trying not to read into what you're saying too much (and you're probably locked up under an NDA, right?), but it's very encouraging that you're talking about the "last 10 months of production" in a very definite way. I guess they're a lot further along than any of us have seen?

No, no. None of us at the dinner are tied into an NDA, but we may as well have. We were given trust by Suzuki-san and YSNET and I would never breach that. All I would say is just be a patient for a little while longer, and that concept video we seen last year, and those level of graphics which people still seem to base an opinion of Shenmue 3 on.... throw them out of your mind, keep it clear like a polished mirror and look forward to the (possibly near) future.

I feel.comfortable enough saying that because Cedric has already more or less said the same things on Twitter.

Re: Playstation Experience - December 2016

Sure ask away. Just a couple of things though, I can't really talk about the dinner much on 2 counts, 1 being that we were given a lot of trust by everyone, and 2 that other people also paid to be there and I have to respect that they may hold the occasion as an intimate meeting and want to keep it that way.

But I will do my best :)
Oh sure, you guys paid a lot of money to be there and a lot of trust was put in you all if no NDAs were signed.

I'll try and keep them kind of general, and of course, you completely reserve the right not to answer. I may have a few followup ones later, but here are a couple that I've been thinking of since I saw the pictures from the trip:

Did you guys actually get to visit the YSnet office? If so, did it seem reasonably sized?

Did you see anything that related to combat?

You've said how the game looks compared to the E3 video last year, but how does it match up to the MAGIC Monaco stuff?

Was everything you saw video, or did you get any live demonstrations?

And finally, did you see Ryo/Shenhua's new models, and if so, did they look right ?

I am pretty much a straight to the point guy, so:

1. No visit to the office. It was a day excursion to various historical sites, followed by a nice meal.

2. None that I can remember.

3. I think those videos were more showing off the weather system, and lighting techniques. We are 7 months on so I'd say to expect improvements on all aspects of the development.

4. Dot, dot, dot...

I don't know what he meant i am just giving my opinipn based on what i know. I have never disliked Shenmue 2 over Shenmue. 2 is my favourite game of all time.

I've got a friend in the OC, Peter. If you don't get a couch to sleep on I'll ask him if he can accommodate you.

Awesome! Yea, OC seems to be the airport to fly into and not LAX. I have found accommodation which is walking distance to the convention center and only need a deposit to secure. But it's telling the gf that I am away on another Shenmue trip may end up in all sorts of arguments lol.

Re: Kickstarter Update #60: Dinner in Japan Reward Report

Sorry to be a debbie downer but this is a waste of an update IMO. But I guess they have nothing else of substance to show us until the next big unveil at a gaming show.

Well, considering there are people at this dinner who spent a small fortune on the Shenmue 3 project, mainly based on the trust they have in Suszuki San and their love for the Shenmue franchise, I believe it's fair to show to every backer that they care about us and want to fulfill their commitment regarding the rewards.

There's probably a good reason why they didn't show anything else.
They probably just need more time to polish what they are working on before showing the project status.
PSX is only 2 month away. I'm okay with them withholding new stuff if that means a major "wow factor" when they'll decide to unveil them.

Btw I don't think there was a similar update for the Monaco dinner, probably because the conference content dominated that month. Amir has written a nice article about that though, which can be found here: https://medium.com/@MoosaviAmir/a-weekend-with-yu-suzuki-6ff4d9d9edb6#.7p75qnz6y

I'd imagine it was an unspoken understanding that they wouldn't spill the beans. I mean if one of them had started reaching for their smartphone it might have occurred to him to say something, but if someone's paid ten thousand dollars to be there, he probably felt it safe enough to assume they'll respect that privilege and not give too much away during the limited time that it can remain exclusive to them (and their fellow diners, who may not appreciate that exclusivity being taken from them without their say-so).

He wasn't lying.

is any of the yakuza spinoffs worth playing? Im new to this series and don't know much about it, but I have seen a zombies one in a store recently... thx!

It really depends on your tastes. If a third-person shooter with zombies is the kind of game that would normally appeal to you, then throwing in the Yakuza characters and sense of humor will only make it more enjoyable. But if all you're playing it for is the Yakuza-ness, then you might struggle to stick with it. Bit of a sliding scale really, but if you can get it cheaply then I'd say it's at least worth a try.

Shenmue Dev Team Expanding - Leaflet Translation

Today (1st October) I want along to a single-day event in Yokohama for Unreal Engine put on by Epic Games, with the venue being Pacifico Yokohama, the same conference center where Yu Suzuki held the Shenmue Premiere so many years ago.

A number of talks on developing with Unreal were held through-out the day by companies such as Capcom and Square Enix, as well as exhibition booths and even a stall selling Unreal stickers and other merchandise.

But the main reason I was there was for to get my hands on this Shenmue leaflet:

http://i.imgur.com/PxVuekYm.jpg

Positions being advertised:

And I'm thinking this looks like a new image...? (Or is it recycled?)

I've put up a translation of the leaflet on my blog:
