Re: Japanese version of this text

After researching, yes it is sometimes read as ka. So it is in fact I who looks silly. I stand by my point about romanisation though.
Yes, it's true that there're some versions in Romanization. But, what I had corrected there wasn't the matter of Romanization, as I used exactly the same version. Have you listened to how Shenhua read the verse in the YouTube video? As you've finally found, "kare" should have been "ka" there, so are other words. "Tōtsu" may have confused you, but Shenhua says "totsu" with a short vowel, not with a long vowel as he spelled. It's different in hiragana, "とおつ" vs "とつ" and not the matter of Romanization here, either.

Believe me I was doing alright in Kanji reading at elementary school, though my English do (and will) have lots of problems.
Remember that there's a long way to go to master a foreign language. Roma(nization) wasn't built in a day, you know? ;-)

Re: Japanese version of this text

I admire your courage to come back and admit your mistake. Welcome to the Dojo!

However, it's a shame that you still don't see my point.

I would still argue that if using Hepburn romanisation method for converting text, you would always transcribe kanji such as 遠つ as tootsu and 紫風 as shifuu (or perhaps even murasakifuu、I'm not too sure)
Did you listen to how Shenhua recites the verse in the video? She never says "tootsu" with a long vowel, but clearly says "totsu" with a short vowel there. It's true that "遠" is usually read as "too" as in "遠い(tooi)." But, there always are some exceptions. This verse is written in a classical style and the wording is pretty different from modern writings. And, remember that we're talking about transcription here. What Shenhua says is what matters. That's how it is read, like it or not.

As for shifuu, I have no objection to your using whichever system to spell it(, though the "murasakifuu" may not be the natural Japanese). In fact, my user name "Kiyuu" has two "u"s for the long vowel, as you see. But, once again, Romanization difference is not the issue here. I just used the same system as the translator used in the previous post.

Well, it's not easy for me to explain this kind of thing in English. So, forgive me if my English doesn't sound correct to you.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

2nd part of my videos, the most interesting I believe:

http://youtu.be/8zbEmRLrhJE
Thank you for the videos. I'll summarize what Yu Suzuki said about Shenmue in Japanese as directly as possible. So, forgive me if some part would not sound natural for English.

*He named Virtua Fighter as the most memorable game of all his games, for he had to go through various hardships while making it. And, he added "Shenmue as well" at the end of the answer.

*He admitted that he regrets Shenmue III hasn't been made yet.

*He has no concrete plans for the next generation consoles, but he'd like to do something for them.

*About "the crowd-funding," he plainly said "there's such possibility," showing no particular interest.

*He wants to make Shenmue III for sure, if a good partner is found. He used the same phrase twice; "if circumstances allow." He's glad that French fans are still talking about Shenmue a lot.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

Hi Shenmue fans !
Let me clarify this for you. After a travel of 1200km made just to meet Yu, I was in Monaco this weekend, where I met Richard ( rdk_nl ) from this board. He filmed me when I asked this question http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p3PjvKA7m0 that was misinterpreted since...

The question was " If Mr. Suzuki ends up being unable to find the financial resources or the good circumstances to develop Shenmue 3, would it be possible to him to decide to finish the story as an Anime in 3D, or even cheaper : as a book ".

His answer was, if I can relate to the translator (really not sure about that) : " Maybe, it's a possibility... Even in that form, I would like to make some more Shenmue ".

2 things :

1. With the conference translation, I still don't know if Yu Suzuki means that "Even in that form...some more Shenmue" means : "If I wanted to do it, I would not make one episode, but a series of anime or books" or "If I chose to release Shenmue on those medias, I would still want to release more Shenmue as a videogame". Maybe one of you japanese speaking fans might translate Yu's answer there, it would be really nice ;-) .

2. I never said anything about a "manga", I spoke about a book (refering in french to the word "romancé" that relates to a novel, a written adaptation of the original script). I hope it's been well translated to Yu Suzuki. It's that french journalist who made the connection between an Anime and a manga book, not me.

Let's hope we'll have something concrete in the near future... Thank you !
Lucky you for having been there. Here's the direct translation of the Q&A in Japanese:

The translator: "Instead of a video game, will there be any chance that you depict the story of Shenmue 3 in other forms, like movie or novel?"

Yu Suzuki: "there will be such possibilities, I think. Even in such forms I want to do something related to Shenmue."

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

This is just a tidbit about Yu Suzuki while he was in Monaco.
According to the following facebook page in Japanese, Yu-san took a tour of Côte d'Azur on March 1st.

http://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?id=208376462514654&story_fbid=568956586456638

http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af167/Kiyuu/Monaco2013_2.jpg
Yu-san with Go Nagai, a famous animator, and the tour guide

As he wanted to stroll some old village with an ambience that would be suitable for a game, the guide took him to Dolceacqua . He liked the village very much and took a lot of pictures. Some day, we might stroll an old village like this in some video game. ;-)

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

Here a video of the complete conference of the Sunday March 3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=il8bSiWu_CA

Thank you for the video. Now that I can hear the Q&A part clearly, I've fixed the inaudible part in my translation.

Can you please add time stamps to the duration of each Shenmue question.
Here's the translation of the Shenmue related Q&A:

21:24-TR: What is the most memorable game to you?
21:29-YS: Every game is memorable to me. But, Virtua Fighter is the most memorable as it was
the hardest game to make, having had to go through various hardships. Shenmue as well.

24:01-TR: Is there any regrets?
24:04-YS: Ah... I hate this (kind of question.) Not having been able to make Shenmue III yet, of course.

24:43-TR: Do you have any plan or project for the next-generation consoles?
24:52-YS: I don't have any concrete plans, but I'd like to do something for them.

25:23-TR: What do you think about using the service like crowd-funding, such as Kickstarter?
25:33-YS: There's such possibility, I think.
(Here, the translator took the liberty of connecting the answer of YS with Shenmue III, and the MC got excited.)
15:47-YS: That was a leading question, wasn't it?

26:06-TR: Perhaps you've already been asked this a lot, but everybody wants to know it. How is Shenmue III
going at the moment?
26:17-YS: I want to make it for sure, if a good partner is found.
26:30-YS: If the circumstances allow, I want to make it.
26:41-TR: Everybody wants to help you in anyway.
26:45-YS: Thank you. Merci beaucoup.

26:51-YS: May I speak a little here? French fans, especially, have been caring about Shenmue a lot and
always ask me about Shenmue III. I'm very glad about it.
27:18-YS: I sincerely want to make it, if circumstances allow.

36:50-TR: Now, there's a rumor that Shenmue I or II will be playable soon by downloading with PSN or Xbox...
37:06-YS: Where is it from?
37:10-TR: Huh? He (the questioner) says so.
37:15-YS: Well, I don't get it. Every year a rumor says Shenmue III is coming. I wonder who is making it.

42:24-TR: Do you have a plan to make Shenmue HD?
42:50-YS: The license of Shenmue I and II belongs to SEGA. Now that I've left SEGA, it's not my decision,
but SEGA's, to remake and sell them like that. It'd be possible for SEGA, I guess.
43:27-YS: I could make anything related to Shenmue series, though, by getting the license from SEGA,
if they say OK.

45:10-TR: Instead of a video game, will there be any chance that you depict the story of Shenmue 3
in other forms, like movie or novel?
45:24-YS: There will be such possibilities, I think. Even in such forms I want to do something related to Shenmue.

Re: Concept artist

It may have already been asked before but I couldn't find the thread.... who drew the sketches and concept art for Shenmue and Shenmue II? I used to know his name but I forgot.... :| #-o
If you mean this kind of sketches and drawings, it's Kenji Miyawaki who is credited as "2D Graphics Design Supervisor" and "2D Graphics Character Designer." He also did the Shenmue II side story comics .

Re: Possible links with Ziming, Lan Di, Sunming Zhao, Iwao?

I don't know whether it has been mentioned before but Bajiquan the martial art partially practiced by the Hazuki family (incorporate moves from Bajiquan as well as jujitsu) and also is the martial art practiced by Ziming/Xiuying. It might interesting for people to know that Bajiquan originates from Mengcun---ring any bells :) ? also Piguazhang is also from the same province (Hebei)... just thought it might be interesting for people to know that! And any information people might have to add..
Bajiquan is featured in Shenmue, as the motion actor and the martial arts adviser, Tetsuya Hattori , is a Bajiquan Master. Naturally, he often visits Meng Cun, the homeland of Bajiquan, and meets Master Wu . And, Yu Suzuki visited the town, too in 1994. We've talked about the connection between Shenmue and Bajiquan/Meng Cun repeatedly. A few of them are:

Also, though slightly off topic from this, I found a page from a magazine that seemed to cover Shenmue's appearance at the event. They have a little feature on the as of yet unseen characters shown off at the Shenmue The Movie premiere, maybe Kiyuu can translate and see if they say anything of importance?
Nothing of importance there. It just says "Are these new characters? I wonder who they are, who look totally different from the main characters. Seemingly Chinese style..."

yep, thats it. i have never seen something like that before. i suppose it one of those things that is more common in the east. mopeds are also more popular there so makes sense.

so its a device for stabilising the storage box . interesting. does it have a name?

maybe i will try to upload an picture of it at some point, but it wont be good quality. if someone else wants to then feel free. thanks guys
That device is called "demae-ki," that means "delivery machine/device." You can buy one, if you're interested. ;-)

The big springs are shock absorbers which prevent soup from spilling while delivering soup noodles, like soba or ramen. Certain noodles are delivered in bowls filled with soup in Japan, so they need such device.

Re: Chi you men boss of the bosses??

just to be clearer what i am asking is:

are there 4 main bosses - north (tentei), south (niao sun) east (Lan di) and west (ziming)

or

is tentei seperate from the compass direction bosses (5 overall bosses) leaving northern boss as complete mystery apart from the his silhouete in that one image released by dev team.
Apparently, Tentei, the Emperor of Heaven, is not one of the Four leaders. There seems to be some variations in Chinese mythology, but you can get a rough idea from this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Symbols_(China)

Tentei is the Yellow Dragon of the Center. Remember the Yellow Head building in Kowloon is surrounded by the other four "compass direction" buildings.

Thanks for further info on the four symbols, Kiyuu. I didn't know yet that the center is a yellow dragon and that even that matches up with the building in Kowloon. But yeah, Tentei is definately the boss above the other four bosses and I'm sure that's what Yu Suzuki ment with his gesture.

Re: Chi you men boss of the bosses??

thanks for the clarification kiyuu.
It's my pleasure! :D

i have another question but again i don't want to start a new topic- maybe you could help me since you know japanese.

not sure whether its ever been discussed, its regarding the bad ending of shen 2

in the english subtitled version lan di says to shenhua ' i will take your power for the CHIYOUMEN'
but in the english spoken version land di says ' i will take your power for the CHIYOU'

wonder if it was a translation error.

i suppose chiyou makes more sense since we know that its a some kind of supernatural entity. but then again the chiyoumen leaders (at least some of them) might have minor supernatural powers.

some might see this as only minor importance, since to empower the chiyou is equivalent of empowering the chiyoumen. anyway a clarification would be great.
Lan Di clearly says "Shiyuu" in Japanese, which means Chiyou, not Chiyoumen. Translation error, most likely.

You can meet Mr. Yukawa in the bar on the next day after the "Nozomi's Confession" at the park. And, that will not happen on Disc one. Good luck!

Re: Say Hello to Mr. Yukawa at Takara Sushi!!

@Kiyuu: I'm at that very day, that's what I meant to say. The day automatically ends after the scene with Nozomi so it has to be the next day anyway. But I'm confused. NOT on Disc 1? But the Nozomi scene can only happen on that disc, after you've translated the letter. Wait! Does that mean you have to quickly get to the harbor the same day and then go into the Bar that night?

If I undestand this correctly now, you can spot him during the first step of the "friends come over" scene and then if you go into the Yokosuka Bar again after 11 pm once more. But only if you go to the harbor the same day you translate the letter?
"Nozomi's confession" can be triggered on Disc 2 all right. Now I don't remember how I did it exactly, but you don't need to rush like that. Why don't you go to the harbor and come back without entering the Warehouse No. 8? Then, wait for the call from Nozomi and enjoy the date. It's fun to see Goro helping you sneak into the Warehouse when you go back to the harbor on the next day. Then, come back without trying to sneak into the Old Warehouse No. 8, and go to the Bar after 11 pm. I hope this will work.

Re: Yokosuka Photo Tour

1. Is that real life house actually based on Ryo's home?, because it looks almost exactly the same.

2. Who currently lives in that home, someone famous, or some normal guy, because I wonder what he thinks that his home is accurately modeled in a video game.

3. Did Yu Suzuki know the guy living in that house at the time to recreate it, or he just randomly chose a house to put in his game without permission? lol
You mean that dojo-look-alike building by "that real life house," don't you?
Actually, that is an average temple that you can find almost anywhere in Japan. Apparently, it's not really a residence, but the main sanctuary of a temple where the priest(s) perform(s) sutra services. That entrance, too, is an average gate of a temple. Remember that Hazuki residence once was a temple.

Once you were able to access the huge database of Shenmue Passport while you were online.

In the "Shenmue World" section, you were able to view the detailed description of every place in Shenmue.

Re: Yokosuka Photo Tour

Well then my question still pertains to that residence since the set up is all to alike if you count how it features a dojo and all.
Do you realize those pictures are a compilation of random pictures found on the web? Read what the topic creator says once again:

I've collected them from Panaramio, the website used in this feature, and arranged them in a similar way as presented in the game. The captions I use are my own interpretation of what it looks like and not necessarily what it actually is.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to identify the Dojo-look-alike temple in the first picture. But, the building in the 2nd and the 3rd picture was identified. It's called Kaisyun-in, again not a residence, but a temple. See the wooden box on the top of the stairs. That's a "saisen-bako (offertory box)" for the worship-visitors.
Also, the gate belongs to another temple, Seirai-an. Both Kaisyun-in and Seirai-an are surrounding Kenchoji , one of the most famous temples in Japan. They are scattered in huge remote area.
Anyway, there's no picture of a "residence" in the compilation, other than the plain small houses along the streets.

Re: Unused ambient sound (Japanese radio/tv broadcast?)

The one on the telephone is way different though, works like a dialogue, right?
Maybe they originally intended to use this instead? Though the choice of packing it into as ambient sound is strange.
I had Ryo call 177. Yes, the phone voice was recorded by a woman and much clearer, though it's not a dialogue kind. Also, this muffled man's forecast covers much wider area than the phone's which covers only Kanagawa prefecture.
It's rather for the radio. If it's sorted as "ambient sound," they were planning to use it as background sound in some restaurant, maybe?

It sounds like something that's supposed to come out of a radio or TV, like a weather report or commercial where someone is talking in Japanese. It's really low quality and hard to understand but maybe someone here can make out what the guy says?

http://shenmuedojo.net/new/story/sidestorycomics.html

It seems few people here know about that chapter, I decided to give you this translation.
In the Dori-Maga, formerly the Dreamcast Magazine, issued on Sept. 7, 2001,
there's this interview with Yu Suzuki and voice actors of Ryo, Ren and Shenhua.
Among the interview, Yu-san and Masaya Matsukaze, the voice and motion actor of Ryo
were talking about the missing chapter on the boat. And Takumi Hagiwara, the Ren's
voice and motion actor adds some comments on the scenes that were cut eventually.

BTW, the interview was held on the completion of Shenmue II.
Remember the releasing date of Shenmue II in Japan was Sept. 6, 2001.

Q : I heard there used to be "Chapter 2 - the Boat" between "Chapter 1 - Yokosuka" and
"Shenmue II," but actually, II begins with the scene Ryo disembarks from the boat.
There, the mother with a girl mentions something on the boat, doesn't she?

Yu-san : Yes. "Chapter 2 - the Boat" included in the original scenario has disappeared
completely.
Masaya : Yeah, that's right. The Boat! In fact, Chai reappears. He's survived being
knocked off into the sea at Yokosuka harbor, and fights with Ryo as an unseen opponent
on the boat. There was a scenario like that.

Q : Was the scene shot?

Masaya : Yes! We shot it pretty flamboyantly. In fact, some people Ryo meets on
the boat were supposed to see him again in the later scenario, saying like "ah, you're
the one on that boat...," and the story would expand from there.
Yu-san : Confronting Chai was a nice situation. We've finished the designs of the boat
completely, including the height of the deck, the length of the rails, and every thing.
The escaping route was arranged, too. Some spectacular action scenes were planned
to be unfolded, you know.
Masaya : All the motions were captured, too. I opened the door of the cabin and then
the story went so theatrically!

Q : Then, you had to cut those scenes tearfully?

Yu-san : Well... I cut them rather plainly. "Impossible to fit? OK, cut it," just like that.

Q : There must be plenty of scenes that had to be cut eventually, or motions weren't
used. Especially, as the motions of Ren are really wonderful, I honestly wanted to see
them more.

Takumi : I guess there should be tons of them, if we include detailed motions, too.
We shot quite a lot of fighting scenes that were cut.

*Well, we surely miss that chapter, don't we? :?

Re: 10000 dinner reward back up for grabs!

I can't believe all 3 of the people who bought dinner with Yu Suzuki belong to this place. This forum is definitely the best Shenmue Forum out there!

Ken Sugimori isn't here, as far as I know. He's the artist for Pokemon. He posted on his Twitter that he got it.

Ken Sugimori tweeted that he didn't pledge 10,000, but 500 only.

Re: Looking for a video

I vaguely remember a cutscene made using in-game graphics that involves some sequence happening, but then it turns out to be a dream from one of the people working on the game. He's asleep and his head is resting on his hand with his elbow on a desk. Then his head slips off of his hand and he hits his head hard on the desk, which causes him to wake up. I don't know if the cutscene was actually in the original game, or part of a promo, or something, but I remember seeing it and now I can't find it. I tried looking at the shenmuedojo youtube but gave up because there are a billion videos. Help?
You mean this?

Re: Whats the name of the boat?

Retroberra wrote:Whats the name of the boat? Anyone able to translate?

"Genpu" means "Black wind." And "Maru" is added to denote that it's the name of a ship.

Re: Shenmue Collections & Merchandise

That magazine with the statues Pol, is that a gaming magazine? Some guy called Kyoto had them on ebay years ago I think.
It's not a gaming magazine, but a photo book of a doll creator named Gentaro Araki.

Why can't I cash in slot money ??

Because gambling is illegal in Japan. You can't earn money legally by playing games.

They were displayed at least once at a Shenmue promotional event, Digitaliland.

Yu-san must be keeping them somewhere, I suppose.

That's right, unfortunately. But, "Shenmue" is a game for law-abiding citizens, unlike "Yakuza." ;-)

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

The most interesting tidbit was Ren talking about a certain herb that Yang has that actually started out as a bug that has a seed growing inside it. When the bug crawls into the ground/dies, the seed sprouts into a plant. It was called the Dongzongxiacao or something.
This is the one he was talking about:
