Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

I'm going to take the controversial opinion of saying I liked it. :P Though I wish they had left codebreaker quest and Leia flying on the cutting room floor to improve the pacing. I would have liked to have had more Luke/Rey time in its place. I didn't like admiral Holdo. I think Admiral Ackbar should have been the one to sacrifice himself by ramming the ship instead of some frilly pink hair who could have saved a boat load of problems if she merely confided in Poe her plan.

I don't believe Snoke is truly dead. I think he's in the same league as Luke at least and projected himself to Kylo and the others in his thrown room while he was somewhere else to protect his frail body. He can clearly the the Force on others across wide distances so it wouldn't surprise me one bit.

EDIT: Sorry, just dropping spoiler tags in. - OL
They're not going to have a guy with Ackbar in his name perform a suicide attack in this climate. That's the only reason it wasn't him.
If anything not only should it have been him ramming the ship in a suicide attack, but he should have shouted " ADMIRAL ACKBAR "! while he did it.

Re: Psychonauts 2

Delayed until 2019:

Production update
We have now ramped up into full production mode! We have five full level teams working on the real world locations and brand new mental worlds, as well as our full gameplay team working on powers, platforming, puzzles, and combat.— all kinds of great stuff!

Now we are in full swing, we know a lot more about the size and scope of the game we are going to make, how long it will take us to make it, and the amount of time we need to make it be great. From those projections we know that Psychonauts 2 will not be shipping in 2018, like we originally estimated when we published the Fig campaign two years ago.

We love the game we're making and we want to make sure that Psychonauts 2 is something you’ll love too — a game that carries on the legacy of Psychonauts in a meaningful and special way. We’re making great progress, but we want to make sure the game has the time it needs to shine.

We’re sorry that you’ll have to wait a little longer than we first estimated, but we’re also hopeful that you’ll understand it will mean being able to deliver a better game. We’re really excited about the things we’re making, and we can’t wait to share them with you!

Re: Games similar to Shenmue or Yakuza?

I can't say for defo coz I've never played it past the opening five seconds, but people often point to Omikron/The Nomad Soul.

Others on here will try to convince you to play Deadly Premonition too. Don't. It's shite.

Sleeping Dogs I haven't actually played, but just looks like a GTA game set in Hong Kong with martial arts. If anything it'd be a GTA-Yakuza hybrid. Similarly L.A. Noire could be considered a cross between GTA and Shenmue, but that'd be a bit of a stretch.

When it comes down to it though, I genuinely don't know of any game completely similar to Shenmue. It'd require interconnected areas, heavy focus on freedom within reason, a late 20th century setting, attention to detail in the cinematography, a huge number of unique NPCs, a constant sense of uncertainty even when faced with familiarity, and of course combat, interactive cut scenes (not necessarily QTE) and a host of mini games.

No game, to my knowledge, has all that.

Re: Games similar to Shenmue or Yakuza?

Like others are saying, they're really their own beast. I suppose the 2D equivalent for Yakuza is the Kunio Kun series (River City Ransom games being a subseries of its own within it), which seem like one of the main inspirations for Yakuza.

I'd also say Way of the Samurai series as well, which are at least similar to the samurai styled Yakuza games but are also their own things. But they have their own day/night system, side quests, multiple endings, fun combat systems, wacky characters, set in various parts of Ancient Japan between each game.

Japanese adventure games in general are a good bet if you enjoy methodical, slow paced gaming:

Glass Rose (PS2) - notebook system, Shenmue voice cast, point and click interface, developed by Capcom, Cavia (NieR devs) and Cing (Hotel Dusk devs).

Shadow of Memories/Shadow of Destiny - time system that plays a very important role in the plot, launch era PS2 game so has that old CG look to it, multiple endings, third person camera, dense areas to explore, unique NPCs to talk to to advance the plot. Developed by Konami during their peak as a developer.

Re: Dark Souls Remastered.

Demon's Souls is the best of the series and everyone only ever talks about Dark Souls, which is unfortunate.

1.Demon's Souls had the best (most varied) bosses--not everything was a roll fest.
2.Demon's Souls was the least linear, insofar as you could choose whichever level you wanted to go to from the main hub.
3.Demon's Souls did not have that infuriating input-buffering.
4.I thought Demon's Souls had better and more unique music and NPC's and atmosphere overall.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_bbALTxXpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPJUQg_U5HY

Plus, a lot of the ideas in Dark Souls are just Demon's Souls Ideas... again.

The only thing worse about Demon's Souls is the stupid name. It should have just been called Demon Souls and it wouldn't awkward as eff to say. Too bad the game is largely forgotten and rotting on the PS3.

Anyway, I get frustrated because Demon's Souls is probably one of the best games I've ever played and the rest of the series is unfortunately... not. Although still good.

That said, sorry for mini/annoying rant, stoked for more Dark Souls 1.

The friends of Ringo Ishikawa

Hello, guys. If i'm breaking some law you'll just delete this post, i suppose.

I'm currently in development of the game heavenly inspired by Shenmue and Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari. It's an open world game about japanese delinquents focused on story and small things that don't do much but matters a lot in the end (like feeding a cat in Shenmue).

So i'm just looking for players who could be interested.

Here's a greenlight trailer i made a year ago and some screenshots.

If you don't mind i'll be posting some news about the game once in a while.

Sorry for an adv.

Re: The friends of Ringo Ishikawa

Thanks for a kind words, fellas!

> Are you developing it all by your lonesome, or with other people?

I did it alone as a Kunio fan game with Technos sprites (although i did animations myself), then decided to make it big and my own so i hired 2 artists to draw graphics and animations. Music is royalty free. I tried to work with musicians but it turned out to be the most difficult ) But maybe i simply didn't find my man.

I'm working on it for 2 years and it's a final stage now (i hope). Planning to release it late April or May this year.

Yeah.

> Just looked up some of the earlier Technos-style gameplay too; have to say, I really liked the atmosphere in some of the videos where snow is falling and it's got soft jazz playing.

It's Chet Baker's Alone together: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SENykNkARzI

It was a short noir game at first. Now i made it a little longer with proper story but still it'll be 4-5 hours long.

> I know you haven't finalized the music, but that was a nice touch anyway.

No, i actually finalized the music. I have 3 original tracks and more than 20 royalty free. Downtempo, trip-hop mostly. Here's one of the original tracks:

Re: Dark Souls Remastered.

I wish this were Demon's Souls Remastered, but I appreciate the legal obstacles that preclude it.

I do not overrate Demon's Souls; I prefer it because it is more spiritual. Not figuratively. When I die, I want to be a force ghost -- whereas Dark Souls deaths are, in the immortal words of Brendan Fraser and John Hannah, juicy .

Re: Random Thoughts

So it's kind of weird, but watching the current Olympics has made me develop an extreme appreciation for figure skating. I've honestly never given a shit about the Olympics before; other people pretend to care, but it's always seemed awfully shallow to me that most only pay attention to any of these events once every four years, and tend to only care about their own country's participants. But whatever the case, somehow figure skating has sunken its claws into me. So much to the extent that I think it might actually develop into a major interest far outside of the Olympics themselves.
I've never taken an interest in any sports or athletic events before, but it occurs to me that this is one of the few that legitimately doubles as an art form, and that's appealing as hell . Some of the performances during the Olympics were actually beautiful enough to hit me in the same way a great piece of music might, where you get lost in how oddly mesmerizing it can be. If I were a younger man, I might have been inspired.
So yeah, never thought I'd say it, but I love this stuff.

It’s been nothing but Hanyu Hanyu Hanyu on TV here. Every station is all about him. Poor Uno-kun. He’s good too. Fernandez also an ace. Ya.. I like the figure skating too. Well maybe it’s more of a respect for the difficulty.

Re: Politics

Your questions presuppose that the concepts of 'truth' and 'reality' are given, or foundational, and that humans gaze upon the same reality together first, and then make decisions. But mind does not precede matter, so to speak. 'Truth' and 'reality' are functions of the brain, not the brain a function of reality. Therefore, nature could be generating a different world out of every brain, and that is why there is and always has been never-ending conflict. The people whose brains have been determined to know these facts are even now developing the technology to unify human consciousnesses. When they succeed and activate the process, our species' civil war will at last end, and there will be universal harmony among us till the end of the universe.

Re: Random Thoughts

My parents were in America while the 2016 Olympics was on and my dad said that when he watched it on TV out there you wouldn’t have known any county other than America was competing. Here on the BBC they seemed more interested in Usain Bolt then any of the British runners.

It seems like when it comes to something competitive Americans only seem to care about how well ‘they’ do and not the competition itself. Football seems to have only got bigger there since the US have started doing better in the last few World Cup’s (Not this one lol). Rather then support their local MLS side they seem to support teams here in England just because they’re better or support a MLS side and an English side which shouldn’t be allowed and should result in the death penalty. I laugh at people from London who support Liverpool or Manchester United let alone someone from Arizona.

It's been confirmed Kiwami 2 will retain the Japanese licensed music from Crazy Ken Band. The first time, I think since the original Yakuza 2, this has happened for the Western releases.

This was a big concern of mine when Kiwami 2 was announced. The music adds so much to dramatic scenes of this game.

What music you ask? This one!

Re: Shadow of the Tomb Raider

I’ve enjoyed the last two Tomb Raider games but while playing the last one it really dawned on me why I much prefer the Uncharted series. It’s more ‘fun’. Everything in these Tomb Raider games is far too serious and every conversation is done so straight that it feels boring. I’ve enjoyed the gameplay but I couldn’t tell you anything about the characters and their motivations.

Wouldn't have cost a significant amount just to significantly update the graphics of the game. Day one purchase for me but can't help but feel this is a massive opportunity missed.

Yeah man, because remaking games from scratch is so, so, soooo easy. Just wack it in the ol' remake machine and out the other end comes a perfect remade game from all new assets. Just like magic.

And being serious, the games don't need to be remade. They're already perfect.

Refreshed the game's trailer. It's basically the same as it was for greenlight.

Re: Shenmue 1 & 2 will be $29.99

I’m going to buy 5 copies and donate 4 to local children hospitals because I’m a nice guy.

Re: Critical Reception (Reviews)

Remaster reviews are so hot and cold. Some review the game as if it's just releasing now, others as if it's yesteryear and some review the port work itself. It really doesn't matter, but hopefully they speak on the series worth and charm.

Re: Critical Reception (Reviews)

I imagine we will get a metacritic score in the high 60’s to low 70’s if all that’s changed is what we know so far.

People have to review the product based on what it is today and not it’s place in history despite most Shenmue fans wanting people to focus on the later. Things like the bad voice acting, load times every time you enter a shop and the blocky graphics will not go down well in reviews. Even Shenmue II when it came out for the Xbox 15 years ago had reviewers saying certain things hadn’t aged well and that was in 2002.

The only way this would be reviewed well (as in score above 85 on metacritic) is if it was a full blown remake Shadow of the Colossus style. If the game was made with character models as good as modern games, an open world just being open and not require being split up and half decent voice acting it would be a different story but this product never has or would be that. I still don’t think Sega is confident about the Shenmue series as this seems to be done with a view of just getting it out as there will never be a better time and once a game is on Steam now you make it once and make money on it forever.

Personally I’m happy to just have the port but I imagine this will be viewed as quite a lazy port by the general public, not much has been done outside of some UI updates and the resolution being HD which are the bare minimum expected for this kind of product. I think the most important thing will be the new controls, if they aren’t good knock my prediction down to high 50’s/low 60’s.
