So technically this isn't box art, but Yoji Shinkawa has done some work for an upcoming CoD Zombies expansion.

Re: What TV series are you watching?

Twin Peaks Season 3: Episode 1 and 2 - 80% of it was more like a new Lynch movie, 20% Twin Peaks (those cameos were so good!)

Log Lady scenes were so sad. :(
Hawk continues being a bad ass.
The Red Room scenes were intense.
Madeline Zima is one banging hot lady. Mmmhmm. Shame what happened to her.
What's in the box? Hoooooly shit . What in the fuck was that...thing? Was like a Roswell meets Lovecraftian nightmare come to life. Sent chills down my spine.
The evolution of the arm into that giant tree sure is weird. Also, wow at the evil doppelgänger, felt straight from Eraserhead.
That creepy black oil guy in the prison. What in the...?
Phillip Jeffries (David Bowie) reference was a real "wow" moment. The fact that they are recounting such obscure parts of FWWM is so cool. I wonder if they will reference the other FBI Agents as well?
Matthew Lillard probably giving the best performance in his career, was really impressed. Lynch is so good that his direction seems to give actors inspiration to do things they wouldn't otherwise.
That decapitated head with the other man's body...work of BOB or some other evil from the Black Lodge? Either way, that was creepy as heck.
Evil Cooper is both hard to watch since we like Cooper so much already but to see his evil side since his doppelgänger or Bob (or both?) have taken over him making Coop do some really terrible stuff. He reminded me a bit of Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet with how intimidating he is. He's one cold mother, right now.
That ending, so melancholic and tongue in cheek.

I liked the humour in it as well, Lynch has definitely still got it. Thankful that it wasn't just like Inland Empire, which was expermental as heck but rather felt like equal parts Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks Season 1, FWWM/Season 2 Finale, Eraserhead, Inland Empire, Blue Velvet and Lost Highway. One of the best opening episodes I've ever seen for a TV show.

No wonder it's being reviewed so highly.

Damn, this thing is old.

Well, that whole chronicle was eventually put on hold for a few different reasons and I've since resurrected it again. Been doing a ton of different little things the past few years but this one (going on two years now) is finally 2/3rds finished:

Re: Shenmue Collections & Merchandise

2nd Timex T43371
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Great-Condition-Shenmue-Timex-Watch-Sega-Ryo-Hazuki-Sega-Dreamcast-DC-/322546523992?hash=item4b19455f58:g:A7EAAOSwK6RZOEKE

Is the Timex watch really worth that much? It doesn't seem to be official merchandise.

It's definitely not worth anything like $350 to me. [-X Even if it wasn't scratched up.

Also it has that upside down and incorrect wording all around the ring on the front.
As I've said, there was a model produced with the correct writing on that ring.
For me this is the true Shenmue watch - the one the developers put in the game and obviously the most accurate looking. There's no point in me settling for another version because I'd still end up looking again.
For that reason I'm not at all interested in this ebay model, or the Ltd Edition Shenmue watch which has the same problem.

The "official merchandise" thing doesn't bother me. It's like if they brought out BluMue's Hitachi TRQ-298 after it had already been in production, but screwed up with wrong, upside-down wording, then slapped a Shenmue logo on it. I know which one I'd want.

I'm almost certain "my" watch was the early model and they later changed the wording, because I've seen a promo picture of the Ltd Edition watch. It showed a box with a picture of "my" watch on the front, albeit with "Shenmue" written on the dial.
Likely it was a mock-up using a stock picture, because the Ltd watch came in a completely different box.
Either they altered/photo-shopped it on, or there really is a Ltd Edition watch with the correct writing.
But every Ltd one I've seen has the alternative writing, so I doubt it.

Recently I've discovered that on the back of these watches there's a number stamped on the bottom right strap pin brace. Interestingly (to me!) they differ. I've seen numbers 2, 4 5 and 6.
The watch with number 2 was the same one I'm after. All the others had the alternative writing.
So it's likely these numbers relate to the manufacturing order.

Manufacturing order? WTF am I talking about.
I'm in too deep man.
I'm in way too deep.

Wow thanks for the info! Even I didn't know about the reverse text in the inner ring! I had an absolute heart attack when I read that, and jumped out of bed to dig out my watches. Indeed you are correct about the Official Shenmue Timex, with mine having the text incorrectly facing outwards. I also checked with David, PoL and a few others I know own the official watch and indeed they are all the same.

BUT, thankfully my standard Timex T43371 does have the correct writing so I guess I was lucky when I got it back in 2010.

http://i.imgur.com/rPNYAzI.jpg

As far as I know, the "Expedition" was removed due to licensing issues, and the developers couldn't get the date function to work correctly in game, hence why they were removed. So in theory, you legitimately cannot get an exact version of the in game watch. Even if I took the YS/Shenmue straps off my limited edition and put them on my regular T43371 face, the "Expedition" text and the date window will always remain.

Re: What are you currently playing?

So I bought Eternal Ring for PS4 on the Playstation Store a while back, and finally got around to really playing it recently... until I found out that there's an infamous bug in it, held over from PS2 emulation on PS3, which prevents you from passing a certain point early in the game, killing you instantly. Seriously, a game-breaking bug, in the most literal way possible. And in all this time, no one at Sony or Agetech or From Software have done anything to remedy it. They're selling a broken game on PSN with no intention of fixing it.
That's... y'know, pretty bad. Money out the window.
Luckily, I had my PS2 hooked up anyway, and have a physical copy of Eternal Ring for it, so I could play it anyway.
In simplest terms, the game is King's Field-lite. Same setup, same basic style, just a teensy bit brighter and far easier/more accessible. Much shorter than I expected too. It's not a bad game, and it functions well enough. But I don't think anyone will ever accuse it of being among From Software's best. It feels a bit like something that was rushed out just so they could quickly release something, anything for Sony's new console at the time (it originally came out in 2000).
Still a nice enough atmosphere though. It just ain't exactly Dark Souls or Armored Core.

This bug was fixed like a week ago. :D

Re: Sonic Forces & Sonic Mania

Honestly, why is it so hard for anyone to do anything interesting with Sonic anymore?

In my humble opinion, it is because 23 years ago Sega decided to abandon ABC's Sonic the Hedgehog TV series continuity. I know there are comics. I mean, it should've become the official story of the games. I adored Sonic Adventure 1 in 1999, but that's where my patience ended. I've never been interested in anything but the story of the Knothole Freedom Fighters, the fate of the planet Mobius, and the resolution of that epic Season 2 cliffhanger. When I think 'Sonic', I think Uncle Chuck, Princess Sally, and Dr. Robotnik (not "Eggman"). When I was a kid playing Sonics 1-3 throughout the '90s on my Genesis, I was pretending to be in that cartoon. I still do.

Because Sega let its fanboys like me down hard, we never got a Sonic the Freedom Fighter RPG, never got subtle moralistic commentaries about the cost of ambition, the over-mechanization of society, and the value of nature and freedom. Do new Sonic games even try to show Sonic liberating flowers and animals from robots anymore? Sonic used to have a strong visual point that taught kids a little about life and made the player feel optimistic. It was 1991's optimistic green cyberpunk, a hitherto unique genre, and I can't think of any similar example since.

And bring back Jaleel White!

Re: What are you currently playing?

Such a shame the Mass Effect series is now dead. Heck, most of my favourite Western IPs are dead or dying this gen - same with Deus Ex. Western RPGs on the whole this gen seem to on the whole be failing to capture the same magic as last gen (you've got your exceptions like Witcher 3 and erm, well...).

Anyway, been playing lots and lots of FFXII HD - still as magical as I remember it, in fact, I think I love it even more now, there isn't any other JRPGs out there like it with such quality VA or restraint with its presentation. The atmosphere and world building is such 10/10 mastery. Just as addictive to play through all of the Hunts as before too.

Also loving that there's new music composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto in there as well, which enhances the Ivalice atmosphere even more. New location themes (Nam Yensa Sandsea actually has its own musical theme now) and new Boss themes which are all wonderful.

Also appreciate the cast even more now, you don't get a cast of badasses like this game - Balthier (so much swagger, so much smirk - Ren might get along with him), Ashe (most badass Princess in fiction?), Basch, Fran, Reddas (rocking those pink trousers like a boss; he's also voiced by Phil La Marr so that automatically makes him cool), Larsa, Vossler (Nolan North!), Dr. Cid (most enjoyable villain in the game for me), Ba'Gamnan (Steve Blum!), The Judges (Ghis and Bergan being my favourites), Vayne, Venat (being all like "fuck the system"). The story is actually making more sense to me this time around, found it mysterious last time I played it and just let it roll, now I can see why the characters react the way they do and think the characters have understated depth to them all. Just seeing snippets of their background or hints of it (Balthier getting awkward whenever he hears about his father's lab, Vaan explaining his reason for continue his journey with Ashe etc) makes it better for me, I personally love how mysterious Yasumi Matsuno characters are. Still my favourite cast of characters in a JRPG outside of Matsuno's other games and Persona 2.

Really glad I left my second playthrough until this came out since there's plenty I've forgotten about since it's been around 6-7 years since I played it last.

Re: Fist of the North Star (New)!!! PS4

:) Ken's Rage was a fantastic game, I replayed it so many times over the years! The only thing I think it lacked was a sense of adventure: the game usually dropped you in the middle of a battlefield to fight the bad guys, but Ken is also supposed to be on a quest (actually more than one). That's why I think it may fit better in the Yakuza engine, because Yakuza is all about both fighting AND quests :D

Re: Shenmue III teaser is FINALLY HERE!!

One thing that does concern me is how the gaming media will receive the game. I fully expect the big websites to criticize the game because either 1. They have no history with the franchise or 2. They just enjoy trashing fandoms they are no part of. I wish there was a way we could get out in front of this and let these places know we expect fairness when reviewing Shenmue 3. If it's a bad game, it's a bad game. But if it's a good game after 15+ years of dormancy but it's not the AAA people expect it to be, it's done what the majority of revisited franchises have failed miserably to do.

They aren't going to criticise the game just because they enjoy trashing the fandom, is it impossible to believe that not everyone thinks Shenmue is the best thing ever? If they criticise the game it'll be because they don't enjoy it, you really think anyone outside of the fanboys will care about the history of the series when writing their review? At some point I've seen every website that reviews things called shit because someone didn't like a score they gave it. I expect the review thread on this forum to be hilarious with people tearing their hair out that someone doesn't like Shenmue because you can't just dislike the game.

Some outlets will enjoy it and some won't. Just like every other game. The idea of trying to tell people we demand fairness is embarrassing.

Re: What are you reading?

The New 52 got a bad rap in my opinion. It was trashed as this completely shit moves that was one of the worst mistakes of the decade , but it was more middling than anything with some good runs being buried under the New 52's reputation.

The last full run comic I read was The Flinstones comic that was part of the DC/Hannah-Barbara series.

https://s4.wampi.ru/2017/09/07/FLINTSTONES-dc-cover74745.jpg

I thought it was great. It really makes the "modern stone age" concept work and does a good job at addressing modern issues without picking sides and turning the other side into a strawman (for the most part). It had a good balance of jokes and poignant moments without trying too hard to force either.

I also read the Batman/Elmer fudd comic that came out in August as part of a Looney Tunes crossover.

Re: What are you reading?

A Death in the Family's a surprisingly silly read. And Scott Snyder's easily the worst thing that happened to Batman imo.

I always maintain that in the hands of anyone else, Batman (being one of the flagship New 52 titles along with Justice League) could've essentially saved the whole reboot thing. Instead he decided to rehash the Black Glove storyline with a pale imitation, wrote one of the most ridiculous Batman stories in Zero Year (though I remember enjoying the first couple of issues to an extent), and Death of the Family was just... pointless, almost.

The funny thing is that his best work writing Batman was his run on Detective Comics when he handled Dick Grayson under the cowl. But even though the stories were built up around his character, he wrote most of the dialogue like it was Bruce Wayne.

He actually wrote the story for another "Grayson as Batman" series about the architecture of Gotham. Or summat like that. I remember thinking to myself when reading the dialogue and monologues "Short, snappy, like an acrobat without much time to think... he's finally figured it out!" Then it turned out that someone else was writing all the dialogue.

Greg Capullo's art was pretty class though.

Left Alive (Front Mission + Metal Gear) - Square Enix Japan

So this slipped under the radar yesterday at TGS conference but Square Enix announced a brand new Front Mission game that's basically Metal Gear Solid (stealth action) with mech action (the Armored Core aspect). The game is being Directed by Armored Core series director Toshifumi Nabeshima (formerly of From Software), character designs by Yoji Shinkawa (Metal Gear series artist) and Produced by Shinji Hashimoto at Square-Enix.

- The three protagonists are the people featured in the key visual. All three are isolated in the city where the game is set, and each act independently in order to survive.
- Keyword: “The One Day Incident” – The setting is a city in Russia. The game depicts a one day incident that occurs there. A war is happening in the city, and the protagonist will inevitably get caught up in the conflict.
- Wanzer – Since Left Alive is set in the same world as the Front Mission series, the walking-type mobile weapons known as “Wanzers” will appear. Although you will mainly confront Wanzers as enemies, you can also steal a Wanzer away from the enemy.
- Survival Action – The primary objective is survival. The game will have a varied setup, including traps laid out to stir up the battlefield. There is also a crafting element, which allows you to use the materials you obtain to craft items.
- The Route You Take is Up to You – For example, if you head straight to your destination, you may be in danger of having to fight enemies, but you can also take hidden paths and stay out of the enemy’s line of sight, or take a big detour far away from that area. How you progress is up to you.

- Director Toshifumi Nabeshima: “Since I always place emphasis on things that might give me a sense of accomplishment, it probably is not going to be very easy. (Laughs.)”
- On downloadable content: “We have ideas, so maybe we can do it if the main game does well.”

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

Yeah... I'm not understanding the outright angst people have for Shenmue. Many have already stated that it's a Kickstarter game with limited funds. That was obvious since E3 2015 or the Kickstarter would have never happened. It was explained pretty well.

As for the Naughty Dog comparison earlier... comparing one of the most talented devs currently in the industry that has nearly unlimited resources given their successes with that of YsNet that has severely limited resources... is just asinine. That said, I would still put Yu Suzuki as being just as talented as anyone at Naughty Dog.

In reference to maybe we shouldn't be having blind fanboyism or maybe we should be more subjective instead of just having faith in the project... I would remind anyone that says otherwise that it was the fanboy's faith that got Shenmue 3 off the ground and made it a reality. I will admit that I had lost faith in ever seeing Shenmue continue and then when I saw the Kickstarter announcement... after picking my jaw up off the floor, I quickly added my piece of the pie to the project.

I knew right from the beginning that Shenmue 3 wouldn't be on the level of today's AAA games. It wouldn't be an Uncharted, Red Dead Redemption or Assassin's Creed and you know what...?... It doesn't need to be. Shenmue 1 and 2 were incredible games regardless of not having today's graphical and animation fidelity.

As I loved and still love the original Shenmue games... that was my baseline for what to expect from the graphic and animation capabilities of the third game. In all honesty... that's what I was actually expecting... but in HD resolution... and I was just fine with it. When it broke records getting 3x what Suzuki-san was asking... my expectation for the graphical and animation fidelity remained at around Dreamcast levels. Granted, that was partially because I was having difficulty envisioning a modern day Shenmue.

Given the teaser trailer and the facial animation update, the project is thus far, exceeding my expectations. My main concern right now is two fold.

1. Will Sega give us the first two games in HD?
2. I'm more than likely going to be moving in the next six months. If the surveys on where to send my copy of the game comes before I discover where my new address will be, I'm not sure where to have them send it.

Am I at all worried about Shenmue 3 and that I'll be enjoying it? Not. At. All.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

I'm playing Assassin's Creed: Unity.

Unity has the worst freerunning in the series next to the very first game. 3 and Black Flag's freerunning may have been a bit too streamlined, but it worked most of the time. Unity's attempt to make freerunning less streamlined and more accurate just made everything more complicated and less functional. Arno can climb and leap much greater distances than past protagonists, yet has trouble making tiny steps off of ledges or into windows. He also has trouble climbing up obstacles that I KNOW he can do and has done before, but for some reason he refuses to make the effort.

All of these problems are amplified during this freerunning segment of a mission. It frustrated me so much I finally used the co-op feature. Unfortunately my PS Plus trial expired and they kicked me out the mission right after finishing the freerunning segment (didn't help that the co-op members kept fucking around and not doing the objective). So now I'm back to square 1 tearing my hair out and attempting the freerunning section alone once again with nothing to show for it.

Combat also is a chore. Combat may have been a bit too easy in the previous games, but the worse way to raise the difficulty is to make the player weak and level scale everyone else. If I'm using a sword and the guy isn't wearing armor, I shouldn't need to cut him 20 times to kill him. ESPECIALLY when I can kill him in a single hit with a tiny knife. Combat only reaches the lower difficulty of the previous games when wearing high level equipment (which I bought via the tried-and-true "buy all the real estate and leave the game running" method). I think the camera is also worse since there always seems to be someone offscreen that you don't see until after they hit or shoot you.

Buying skills sucks. I could see how it'd be useful if you can choose what abilities to get without having to wait until you get far into the story, but the bulk of the upgrades are all story-locked anyways so it's pointless. There are also things that are skill point-locked that you got just by default in past games. Do I really need to level up in order to learn how to roll on the ground or sit on a bench?

Ubisoft's general greediness annoys me. Uplay ads, microtransactions, and the annoying companion app features that I'm never going to use that are plastered everywhere (which have all already gone offline years ago). I also seem to have run into more bugs than I have in any other Assassin's Creed game. It's a series known for bugs, but I've always played them after they've been out for awhile and all patched up.

A lot of people have complained about the sameness of the past games, but at least they worked. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Ubisoft tried to fix it and just made it more broke than before.

Tell them it's about a grieving son on a mission to avenge a man who emotionally blackmailed him into eating vegetables.

Re: How to Change Someone's Mind?

I don't think it's specially convincing but the Wikipedia quote is still my favorite insight into what the game is.

If the Grand Theft Auto games have been vilified as crime simulators in which you can press a button to buy a hooker then run a hooker over with a car, Shenmue is a game where you can press a button to politely ask directions, then combo into cherishing your elders and always remembering to recycle. Instead of giving us a city to be tested and battered against in all directions, Shenmue builds you a world and asks you to follow the rules rather than break them.

I would add "And that is what makes the game so fun!".

Re: How to Change Someone's Mind?

Honestly, I think the main selling point for shenmue should be its immersion.

Re: Yakuza series

Yakuza 3 holds a special place in my heart, as it was the reason I bought a PS3. Definitely not my favorite, but it's a memorable one for me.

Re: Fun With Screenshots (Post Yours)

Hard to get nice screenshots with games cluttered with onscreen info, but I really wanted to give a shout out to a game I might like even more than the Souls series (neck to neck tbh)... Dragon's Dogma

Re: Yakuza series

It doesn't bother me personally. I see the Kiwami series as light reboots made as sequels to 0 rather than remakes of the first 2 games, so i picture Majima as a main character in that context.

Some people must've shat a brick when Sonic 3 came out.

Re: Yakuza series

That's actually a really interesting perspective. I mean, I'll probably still feel the way I do about it just because I am already so familiar with the series (and these two particular games), but that's still a really respectable way of looking at it.
It probably helps that I never played through the first Yakuza game and only through Yakuza 2 once nearly a decade ago.

on an unrelated not I was watching Yakuza 5 videos and all I could think of was that I was happy no one surprised me playing through Haruka's section. I can't imagine trying to get someone to believe I'm playing a manly game about the Japanese mafia after seeing the gameplay in the following video.

Re: Fun With Screenshots (Post Yours)

Journey (PS3).

I always dreamed of a game with a secret way to break the boundaries for something truly worthwhile, and one day a fellow traveller took me on a journey i'll never forget.
I was amazed to see that the levels have out of bounds areas that are much bigger than the intended path, and full of detail, secrets and wonderful things - like ruins, monsters, towering cliffs which you can fly up vertically, extra music etc etc....
There's so much to see and do. I haven't taken the intended route for a very long time. I've explored and found my own secrets to add to an alternative route up the mountain, where it's possible to climb to the very peak for an incredible view (not just the bit down in the cleft).

Some of my best moments in gaming are the reactions from travellers when I take them through to "Glitch-world", and the messages I get afterwards. Although often they just stand there bemused as to why I'm flying into a wall at a certain angle, and don't follow me through.

Here, I've taken Japanese traveller Shirakuma-fafa on an elaborate out of bounds path so as to jump back onto the intended path to make a monster get stuck so we can stand in its head listening to the unbelievably creepy sounds it makes (usually - sometimes it's rather quiet for some reason).
But the thing is still alive and dangerous, which is hard to convey when you can only beep and meep. So I tip-toe up to it super-slowly and stop to beep like crazy if my companion gets ahead of me.
They often get the message, but sometimes just wander right into it's light beam which wakes it up. The thing pulls its body through and rears up high like a cobra then dives down and smashes them high up into the air. They land with a broken scarf - which means they can't fly properly for the rest of the game, although strangely, about 1 in 3 times their entire scarf grows back with a golden glow when they stand up.

If anyone is up for an epic journey, let me know by PM. It's possible to meet if done properly. I set up 2 PS3's in the same room for me and my GF, she's not a gamer but absolutely loved it. It would be best if you have a white robe, so your scarf charges up when you touch the ground. It's possible with a red coat but a lot of work for me to keep charging you for flight all the time. Ok, I've talked myself into it. I'm going on a journey right now.
