Re: Random Thoughts

Most people don't even know why they're angry or sad or happy. Voters are largely brainwashed by the ideas of others and don't know how to think critically for themselves. When I see someone bashing the other party indiscriminately, I just assume they're an idiot who are ready to believe anything that adhere's to their already-thought beliefs.

Re: Nintendo Switch

I'm confused by Super Mario Odyssey.
I mean, sure, it looks like the first Mario game in... well, ever , that I can look at and actually think "cool, I'd like to play that." That city area looks like something Sega would have made on the Dreamcast (maybe I'm crazy, but I saw shades of Sonic Adventure and Jet Set Radio).
But does it weird anyone else out that there are all these normal-proportioned people walking around... revealing that Mario himself must actually be some kind of deformed, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome-afflicted dwarf?
Why the feck does he look like that if everyone else is normal?

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

I find gamers club unlocked at Best Buy coupled with Power Rewards membership practically pays for the hobby as I get 20% off new games at Best Buy (which stacks with sales and 25 off 100 visa promotions). Then after I'm done playing them, I can turn into Gamestop when they're doing their 50% more trade in credit + Power Up 10% for in store credit. Then I put the store credit towards Ebay gift cards that I use to buy Best Buy gift cards off Ebay when they have a $50 card for $40 and so forth.

Re: General Anime Discussion

^^I didn't think it would be this extreme, but every time I see an ad for it, I find myself actually angry about it. Not like it's the first lame version of the franchise (Arise had that covered already), but it's almost shocking how evident it is by the goddamn 30-second commercials just how much the movie's creators don't understand the series at all. Or, at the very least, how blatantly they chose to ignore what it's all about, instead opting completely for cliche Hollywood overtones about "finding oneself" and whatnot. It's just... gross.

Bleh, anyway.
Just finished Armored Trooper VOTOMS and Gasaraki, both created by Ryosuke Takahashi, though almost fifteen years apart from each other.
VOTOMS is amazing. As much as most fans may revere early-80s anime for breaking new ground and setting new standards, most shows were still pretty obviously made for kids, with a lot of squeaky girl characters and/or cute animal/alien/robot sidekicks. Or, if they lacked those things, then they probably operated on some kind of overly-simple formula which was mainly just an excuse to have characters fight (Fist of the North Star, much as I love it, is a perfect example).
VOTOMS is different though. It actually feels mature, intelligent, grown-up, with a story that flows properly from one plot point to the next without feeling formulaic. There is a grand total of one squeaky girl in the whole thing, but she's far less-annoying than most like-minded characters in anime. The main character, Chirico, is a bit of a stoic soldier trope, but he's still not exactly a superhero, and he makes mistakes frequently. The second story arc is actually an obvious take-off of the Vietnam war, and features one episode where soldiers force villagers to play Russian Roulette. It's not a show for the kiddies, and to me, that makes it totally stand out among early-80s anime.
Not to mention that it features the single most appealing (to me) type of mecha action I've ever seen in a show, despite the animation being a bit low-quality. None of that super-robot Gundam-style shite; these things are more tank-like, and tend to control as such. The visual style isn't a dead-ringer, but this is the closest thing to Front Mission-style mecha action I've seen in an anime. The robots are just treated as military weaponry, and having the "best" one doesn't win a fight. The show doesn't even assign Chirico with any kind of "signature" robot either, unlike most shows like this; he frequently wrecks them and has to find a new one, switching between multiple models throughout the show, even hijacking one from an enemy during the last story arc. It's like a soldier picking up a new gun because he ran out of bullets. The robots aren't the stars, the characters are. And again, that makes it stand out from most shows of its era.
Planning on watching whatever OVAs I can find of it on youtube now, since those have never officially been translated and released outside of Japan. This series really ought to be more well-known.

Gasaraki is an odd one, however. It also is technically a mecha anime, though it also has a number of supernatural elements here and there, as well as a number of episodes near the end that dive into political and philosophical territory. It's... strange. It's not a trainwreck or anything, but it does feel really unfocused in a lot of areas, like the creators didn't quite know what they were trying to make. That sentiment is backed up even further by some of the DVD supplements; one has an art gallery showing early designs for the protagonist, and the accompanying note mentions that "this one is from an early draft of the show, where the characters would have raced around in transformable futuristic motorcycles"...
Wha huh? That's ridiculously different from what the series eventually became.
It's like the writers and Takahashi himself just set out to make a show and... I dunno, just kind of let the pieces fall wherever, instead of having a concrete concept in place.
And it's too bad, because it could have been among the best mecha shows ever. Like VOTOMS, the robots themselves are portrayed in a surprisingly technical, slightly more "realistic" manner than we usually see... but they just don't seem to be used nearly enough. Entire arcs of episodes go by without them being used. Some of the action scenes that do occur with them are really cool, memorable, and well-animated, but they're just too few and far between. Meanwhile, the show's namesake -- some kind of ancient supernatural force called Gasaraki -- barely appears at all.
It's an intriguing show, but one that ultimately feels like a bit of a mess. And it's too bad, because otherwise I really do like a lot of the design work, direction, and atmosphere of the whole thing.

RIP Chris Cornell

Was mentioned in another topic, but this really deserves its own.
I don't think I've ever been this taken aback by a celebrity death before. Kenny mentioned it, I looked it up, and for several minutes I honestly couldn't form any coherent sentences. Just a lot of disbelieving utterances.
It's early, so I'm sure there's still more information that'll come out, but it's so far been ruled a suicide. And that just... I dunno, I find it hard to come to grips with. The guy has consistently been mentioned and lauded as one of the greatest singer/songwriters in the music industry for years now, and it's one of the few instances where I actually agree with the masses about that stuff, fully and wholeheartedly. I've recently been trying really hard to write my own music, and Cornell has always, always been at the fore of my mind when I'd think of inspiring lyricists. The guy was a legitimate poet and artist, and exemplified everything I'd personally like to be able to do in my own efforts. I also followed him on facebook, and he'd quite regularly post happy pictures with his kids backstage or while touring. Over his entire career, he consistently wrote dark lyrics, sure, but he never, ever struck me as the deeply depressed type (if that's even why he did it; you never know with artists).
Just watched a video of his very last performance, maybe hours before he died, and the part at around 6:35-7:55 is haunting as hell now. Those lyrics weren't in the original song. Then he followed it with the original lyrics "every word I said is what I mean."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg7qw31xeXk&t=6m35s

He knew he was going to do it, and practically announced it.
I'm fucking wrecked right now.

I just checked this out, apparently it's going to be a "core RPG pokemon game". Ryo Hazuki cameo in ESPN NFL Football

I was watching this youtube channel Slopes Game Room, they have features called The Complete History for different series of games, one of which being Shenmue.

They've mentioned in the video something I've heard for the first time ever: Ryo Hazuki has a cameo appearance in ESPN NFL Football on the original Xbox.

Did anyone know about this? Given such a cameo is incredibly obscure for an NFL game, and admittedly the narrator stated they have no found footage of this from the game, I'm still extremely curious/interested to see more.

Check the video out at this timestamp: https://youtu.be/cCdgmSlZ4DQ?t=14m51s

Re: What movie are you watching right now?

I just watched Death note on Netflix. I'm literally speechless. I wasn't expecting much going into this, but Jesus Christ this may be one of the worst adaptations and movies period. It was so unbearably bad. Close to nothing was kept from the original manga other than what the deathnote was and honestly they got some parts wrong. There's the obvious whitewashing bs but whatever on that. Light tried to be an edgelord the whole movie which is not the point of his character. Super awkward music scenes. Story didn't make sense alot of the time. This is some mystery science theater material right here. Holy fuck Netflix what happened? Granted I'm a huge fan of the source material, but that aside this is absolute garbage. One saving Grace is Willam Dafoe as Ryuk. He did well surprisingly and it fit his voice.

Re: What TV series are you watching?

It was okay. There was only one truly great action scene in the entire thing (the office fight, when they all finally meet), and I don't think the end result was quite as epic as they were probably aiming for. Honestly I thought the whole show felt weirdly cheap compared to, at the very least, the level of polish that seemed to go into the first two seasons of Daredevil. Makes me a little wary of the future of Marvel's Netflix shows, what with Luke Cage being generally underwhelming, Iron Fist being flat out bad, and Defenders being a bit ho-hum.
Hopefully the Punisher will make up for all this. Jon Bernthal was mesmerizing as hell in DD season 2, so I hope that carries over. Lord knows Daredevil is pretty much a lost cause now, with Matt Murdock and the entire supporting cast having been rendered as whiny pussies now.

Re: Shenmue III teaser is FINALLY HERE!!

Why's it become such a seemingly negative thing to raise genuine concerns about a franchise you want to succeed? I waited my entire life for a Batman/Superman film and was pretty happy to debate why I reckon it's great with those who thought it was a trainwreck. I don't seem to recall telling anyone to shut up about it.

There seems to be some growing mentality amongst Shenmue fans that we should shut our eyes and ears to anything bad and just repeat the mantra of "la la la, not listening, it's gonna be great, they know what they're doin, waited ages for it, just be grateful, la la la!"

Can you imagine if it doesn't end up being good? If it's poorly received by both the public and media? Who's gonna buy it? We've already got copies reserved. Where are they gonna make the money needed for the follow-up? It's simply not a case of "anything will do". Yeah, we waited fifteen years for this. So it better be fuckin worth the wait. And the money.

As for Spaghetti, how are you not getting this? Why does any studio show something off? No, why does anyone show anything off? Honestly, just think about it. Maybe English isn't your first language, in that case it'd be slightly more understandable, but c'mon... showing off concept art is promotional material. "Checking in" on Facebook to a hotel in an area where there's a relevant event: promotional material. Appearing on a chat show. That's promotional. A video, work in progress or not, is promotional.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

I tend to stay out of the Shenmue areas of the forums for the most part, so excuse me if this gets talked about much.
But random thought: I really hope SIII maintains the replayability of the previous two games. I was thinking about it, and the first two have a very unique style of progression, where being at this place at this time will trigger a unique event, and there's absolutely no hints or indicators signalling exactly where and when they're placed. It all just happens organically, and as you play the game subsequent times you discover new little tidbits here and there, with no reward other than the experience of finding them. And yet, missing these scenes and then hearing about them later from others never makes it feel like you screwed up; it just gives you a little urge to try and see them next time. You're practically guaranteed not to see everything the first time through, and yet no playthrough of either game ever feels "incomplete."
Most games nowadays have absolutely nothing like that. Not that I can think of at least. Games nowadays tend to point you directly toward any additional scenes or events that might happen. And if they don't , then people label the un-marked events as easter eggs. By that logic, Shenmue and Shenmue II were just littered to the brim with "easter eggs," but never acted like they were anything super secret; they were just extensions of how lively the game world was.
I really hope Shenmue III follows through in the exact same way. I don't want any glowing indicators on a world map telling me where everything is; I want to stumble across it all myself, or hear about things on the forum here. I think "modernizing" the game too much with things like that would absolutely kill some of the appeal of subsequent replays.
