Re: Small Tidbit Gaming News

Each story arc is pretty self-contained. It's not like other long-running shonen manga where you have to read 400 chapters to know what's happening.

For example, in the third story arc Stardust Crusaders , the protagonist of the second arc is a supporting character and the villain of the first arc is the primary antagonist, but you aren't missing anything if you haven't read the first 2 arcs.

It will probably cost a lot if you buy all of them, but you have the freedom to jump around.

Re: Scary Non-Horror Games?

Arkham Asylum could get pretty creepy. The whole setting is creepy in general and the environment felt really claustrophobic.

On the other hand, much of the tension was dispersed once you got into the proper mindset. During some sections of the game where I was acting more cautious or more on edge than usual, I realized that, "Wait a second. I'm the GODDAMN Batman." Vengeance and justice then rained down on the evil denizens of the asylum (vengeance and justice being the name of Batman's fists).

Re: Recent Gaming Purchases

OL's earlier post reminded me to preorder JoJo Bizarre Adventure: All-star Battle.
http://oi57.tinypic.com/ea61s9.jpg

I preordered from Club Namco, which gave me 50% off an anime game. I used the 50% deal to pick up Ni No Kuni for just under 10 dollars.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

I have a third-hand fat PS2 whose laser is on the verge of dying. I softmodded mine with Free McBoot. I play games off an IDE drive connected to the PS2 with a PS2 network adaptor, thus bypassing the laser entirely. There are also other Free McBoot apps you could use. There's an app where, if you can connect your PS2 to the internet, you can link it to your computer and play the ISOs of the games from there.

That's pretty much her entire schtick. She got nearly $160k out of a Kickstarter for her video series (the initial goal was $6k).

My desktop is a dinosaur by computer standards (just over 10 years old and has had practically no hardware upgrades whatsoever), so I pretty much forget about playing any games on it.

I've only just now realized that the majority of my GOG library is composed of games that my desktop can actually run adequately.

Look out Beneath a Steel Sky. You are going to get played.

Re: What TV series are you watching?

I think a big part of the problem is that although kids are getting smarter, parents are a lot more protective of their kids. Parents expected a certain level of maturity out of kids in the past, but nowadays they seem to coddle them as much as possible.

Take this clip from "The Great Mouse Detective".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2IctxaCPqw

If this was shown for the first time today, a whole bunch of people would complain about the smoking, drinking and "sexual objectification" of the female mice.

Boy Meets World covered a lot of serious topics: alcoholism, domestic violence, underage sex, cults, etc. The vast majority of those kids/teen shows wouldn't even touch those topics. At best, they might tiptoe around the issue and allude to it in the subtlest way possible because think of the children.

Re: What TV series are you watching?

It's an incredibly weird paradox. I mean, kids are clearly getting smarter in general, thanks to the internet and all that. But then you see that this is the kind of entertainment they watch... and you can't help but think that we must be raising the single dumbest generation the world has ever seen. I can't figure out which one is the truth.

I was watching a rerun of Boy Meets World and Feeny was just as pissed about this as us.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhiiewUgQpc

I also caught 10 minutes of Girl Meets World while flipping through the channels. Wow, you weren't kidding. It really is that bad.

If you want a more dramatic Jackie Chan movie that isn't carried entirely by his fight scenes, I recommend Little Big Soldier. He only has one non-joke fight scene in the entire movie. His acting is also pretty good (not just by Jackie Chan standards), though the character is to his type.

Re: Assassin's Creed Series

There are a whole lot more countries in Asia than just China and Japan. While those 2 are overrepresented in games, the rest of them are hardly represented at all. They've set up India and Russian settings in the comics. The hood, though iconic, isn't really a hard requirement since we've had a few hat-wearing protagonists.

I saw it. I thought it was very well done. Better than Frozen IMO, but I also thought Frozen was really overrated, say take that as you will.

As for the white-washing, Hiro is mixed race and the comic the movie was based off of was as weeb as you can possibly get.

Re: Protests

I've never participated in a protest, but living in the bay area, I run into my fair share. There's always protests in Oakland and Berkeley even when there isn't anything going on, but they've gotten a whole lot worse with the whole Michael Brown protests.

Personal feelings about the Michael Brown case aside, the whole protests have frankly been really annoying. The protestors have blocked off various highways before, making commutes a nightmare.

The only protests I actually like are the ones complaining about tuition costs. While I think the people protesting are essentially just whining, I generally get the day off because the professors cancel classes because of the protests.

Re: What is the closest Jujitsu style closest to Ryo's?

Shenmue brought an expectation for me that jujitsu had a lot of strikes on top of the throw oriented combat. Looking at jujitsu displays, that's not the case. It's mostly about throwing and grabs. I would like strikes too, but no jujitsu school I've found has an large number of strikes. In fact, I think jujitsu - and further, other japanese martial arts - just don't look appealing, which is surprising because the fighting style Ryo uses really appeals to me. I realize it's a game, but I was really interesting in doing something similar.

Old school Jiujitsu incorporated strikes into it, given that it originally came from the battlefield. The reason why the Hazuki style doesn't resemble jiujitsu is because it isn't jiujitsu. It's mainly a mix of various techniques of whatever looks visually appealing. As for Japanese martial arts not looking visually appealing, that's mainly because Japanese martial arts are pretty spartan in nature and are focused on maximum efficiency and no wasted movement.

Some of Ryo's throws like the uchimata, seoi nage(the basic B throw), and the tomoe nage (I don't remember the in-game name, but whatever the default <-B throw is) are straight out of modern Judo. The arm break throw looks like it comes from classic jiujitsu. The Swallow Flip resembles a classic Wing Chun move, though other kung fu styles practice it. I think there was a throw that looked like it came from Aikido, but it's been awhile since I last played and I could be remembering that wrong.

The striking techniques could have come from a number of styles, since many striking styles share the same techniques and only have minor differences in execution. Moves like the Mantis Chop and Iron Palm could come from various kung fu disciplines. The basic punches and kicks most likely come from karate and the more fancy acrobatic kicks are probably from Tae Kwon Do. The kata that Ryo showed Hanhui was definitely karate-based IMO.

The fight between Iwao and Lan Di isn't realistic at all and looks like something out of a Shaw Brothers film. However, if we wanted complete realism from Shenmue, we wouldn't have duck races.

I think the hazuki style mixes multiple disciplines. I'm no expert but it seems like it has a bit of everything.
Canonically, Iwao probably mixed in stuff he learned from various kung fu styles during his trips to China.

Assassin's Creed Liberation HD.

It's fun, but there are parts that remind you it was a handheld port and not developed for consoles.

I also like how all the French people in a French colony have French accents, but all the French people in France (Unity) have British accents.

How did Ubisoft fuck that up?

Re: Random Thoughts

You must be referring to Waypool.

Deadpool himself is a good character with some surprisingly deep stories and characterization (relatively speaking for a character like Deadpool).

However, Daniel Way did a run where he turned Deadpool into a fourth-wall breaking/meta humor, lol randum character. Of course this is the version that exploded into popularity and propelled Deadpool into the public eye. Comic nerds get mad that the worst version of the character is the popular one that's starred in video games, movies, etc. Then again, comic nerds get mad about any adaptation that goes into the mainstream.

You should look into Puppy Linux. It's basically a very very small Linux distro with low system requirements and the ability to run from RAM. This allows it to make even older computers run relatively fast. I've been using it on my 2003 desktop with zero hardware upgrades and I've been happy with its performance.
