Re: Japanese Music

Ue o Muite Arukō by Kyu Sakamoto.
This is a relatively famous song. It was renamed Sukiyaki in the US. Doesn't have anything to do with the song (it's actually the name of a Japanese dish) but it was catchier and easier to pronounce for baka gaijins.

I think everyone who doesn't get caught up in all the female role model stuff agrees it's a decent, but not great film. Everyone I've talked to agrees that the slow-mo and the third act were ass.

Kathryn Bigelow probably would have been a fine choice
She is a fine choice if you know what I mean.

Re: What are you reading?

The New 52 got a bad rap in my opinion. It was trashed as this completely shit moves that was one of the worst mistakes of the decade , but it was more middling than anything with some good runs being buried under the New 52's reputation.

The last full run comic I read was The Flinstones comic that was part of the DC/Hannah-Barbara series.

https://s4.wampi.ru/2017/09/07/FLINTSTONES-dc-cover74745.jpg

I thought it was great. It really makes the "modern stone age" concept work and does a good job at addressing modern issues without picking sides and turning the other side into a strawman (for the most part). It had a good balance of jokes and poignant moments without trying too hard to force either.

I also read the Batman/Elmer fudd comic that came out in August as part of a Looney Tunes crossover.

It wasn't very scary, but it was an enjoyable film. I look at it more like an 80s coming of age movie than a scary movie. Too many jump scares, with only one or two of them working IMO.

I'll also second the kids being great. Their acting skills were solid all around, which was a pleasant surprise since I expect most kid actors to be passable at best in most movies nowadays.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

I'm playing Assassin's Creed: Unity.

Unity has the worst freerunning in the series next to the very first game. 3 and Black Flag's freerunning may have been a bit too streamlined, but it worked most of the time. Unity's attempt to make freerunning less streamlined and more accurate just made everything more complicated and less functional. Arno can climb and leap much greater distances than past protagonists, yet has trouble making tiny steps off of ledges or into windows. He also has trouble climbing up obstacles that I KNOW he can do and has done before, but for some reason he refuses to make the effort.

All of these problems are amplified during this freerunning segment of a mission. It frustrated me so much I finally used the co-op feature. Unfortunately my PS Plus trial expired and they kicked me out the mission right after finishing the freerunning segment (didn't help that the co-op members kept fucking around and not doing the objective). So now I'm back to square 1 tearing my hair out and attempting the freerunning section alone once again with nothing to show for it.

Combat also is a chore. Combat may have been a bit too easy in the previous games, but the worse way to raise the difficulty is to make the player weak and level scale everyone else. If I'm using a sword and the guy isn't wearing armor, I shouldn't need to cut him 20 times to kill him. ESPECIALLY when I can kill him in a single hit with a tiny knife. Combat only reaches the lower difficulty of the previous games when wearing high level equipment (which I bought via the tried-and-true "buy all the real estate and leave the game running" method). I think the camera is also worse since there always seems to be someone offscreen that you don't see until after they hit or shoot you.

Buying skills sucks. I could see how it'd be useful if you can choose what abilities to get without having to wait until you get far into the story, but the bulk of the upgrades are all story-locked anyways so it's pointless. There are also things that are skill point-locked that you got just by default in past games. Do I really need to level up in order to learn how to roll on the ground or sit on a bench?

Ubisoft's general greediness annoys me. Uplay ads, microtransactions, and the annoying companion app features that I'm never going to use that are plastered everywhere (which have all already gone offline years ago). I also seem to have run into more bugs than I have in any other Assassin's Creed game. It's a series known for bugs, but I've always played them after they've been out for awhile and all patched up.

A lot of people have complained about the sameness of the past games, but at least they worked. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Ubisoft tried to fix it and just made it more broke than before.

Re: Recent Gaming Purchases

I got these in the GOG Halloween sale. The 3 STALKER games, Broken Sword 4, and I threw in Shadowman so I could hit the $15 minimum and get Tales of Borderlands for free.

Re: Review The Last Game You Beat

Telltale's Walking Dead: Season 2
https://i.imgur.com/NPidSym.jpg

Not quite as good as the first, but still decent in its own right. Clementine was the best part. She's gotten more mature and is wise beyond her years, but not so much that you forget she's still a kid. Unfortunately, this came at the cost of most of the adults being completely retarded. Hey, does anyone know how to work this electrical transformer? I know, I'll let the 11 year old handle it! I get that people aren't always rational under stress, especially during a zombie apocalypse, but it's a wonder these people lasted this long.

The main problem can be summed up as "missed potential". There's clearly been rewrites as the later episodes were developed, dropping developing plotlines just for "less-obvious" routes despite them coming out of nowhere. One of the biggest flaws from the first game, your choices not actually mattering most of the time, seems more prevalent in the second game. I can't tell if it's because I was just more aware of it going into the second game or if it's because it was more obvious. Characters you save all end up dieing later on, just in different stupid ways.

The ending though, at least the one I got, made the whole trip worthwhile.

Re: What are you reading?

America Chavez
https://s2.wampi.ru/2017/12/05/a.-chavexz.png

I've read some pretty terrible comics. And I mean terrible . Bottom of the barrel, worst of the worst comics including but not limited to:

Trouble , Marvel's extremely poor attempt to bring in more young female readers. Starring a young slutty Aunt May and teenage soap opera drama that not even the CW would air.

Nemesis , Mark Millar-penned comic made entirely of condensed teenage school shooter edginess. Starring an evil Batman knockoff and includes such highlights as "a womb rigged to collapse if the girl gets an abortion".

The Unfunnies , a newspaper-strip cartoon world with the humor, violence, and sex jokes of the same caliber as the absolute worst of Family Guy cutaway gags (also written by Mark Millar--what the fuck is wrong with that guy?). Starring Millar's dad badly photoshopped into the comic as a real world serial killer.

Those 3 are pretty much the unholy trinity of bad comics. I can confidently say that America Chavez is at least as bad as them, and has the potential to become even worse as it's still ongoing.

_______________________________________

Imagine every negative stereotype you know about the US far left, Tumblr, and the social justice movement. America is all of that made into the shape of a comic, without a trace of satire or self-awareness. It's not entertaining in the "so bad it's good" sense. It's more accurately described as "so bad it makes me angry and I keep reading to see how much angrier I can get". I want to break down and analyze all the moments of pure rage-inducing shit that happens every page, but I also don't want to diminish the effect of reading it firsthand by spoiling it.

Noted photographer Peter Parker reading America Chavez #1 .

I recommend reading it, just to see what not to do when writing a comic and how easy it is to get garbage published nowadays. But for the love of God, don't pay for it. Nobody at Marvel deserves money for it. Clearly nobody working on the comic gives a shit (and if they did, that's just sad). 4chan wrote a letter to the editor trashing the comic that was only barely disguised as praise, and they fucking printed it in the comic.

Remember kids, if your comic about a badass lesbian from the utopian lesbian dimension that speaks badly Google-translated Spanish isn't selling well, it's because everyone is bigoted and racist.

Re: The friends of Ringo Ishikawa

I hadn't really thought that far ahead. I must finish the game first of all. The beatemup genre isn't very popular also. I'm trying to make the best game i can for now. And that's all.
That's the right attitude to have IMO.

Too many Kickstarter and early access games get too ambitious and keep trying to add new features or mechanics. Then they end up having a bunch of half finished content while still being in beta for close to a decade.

Re: What TV series are you watching?

https://s1.wampi.ru/2018/05/08/cobra-kai-cobra-kai-series_youtube-red_-may-2_rgb.jpg

I binge-watched Cobra Kai yesterday.

It's not a cheap crash grab like many people feared. It does have some of that 80s cheesiness feel, but it's just the right amount without veering into forced or pandering territory. The writing is pretty good and the characters act human. It's not just a black and white role reversal where Johnny's solely the good guy and Daniel's the bully the whole time. It's a nuanced take where you can see why each guy did what he did. The show takes place over a year, but it's not great at getting the passage of time across, so some of the character development can seem rushed (especially towards the last few episodes). The fight scenes for better or worse are basically the same caliber as the original movies, since the actors as far as I know are all amateurs.

If you liked Karate Kid even a little bit, you should watch it. First two episodes are free, and there's a free trial for Youtube Red for the rest of the episodes, which you can always cancel before they charge you.

Re: Japanese Music

I first learned about Jero back when he was starting to get famous from the Dojo (probably Kiyuu I think). He recently announced he's going on hiatus from music after celebrating his 10 year anniversary as a singer. While he may be stepping away from music, I'm glad he had a solid run and wasn't a one hit wonder.
