Re: Update; Interview with Tak Hirai, lead Shenmue programme

This is not Ryo's movement, this is the stock example character in UE4. If you download UE4, you can play around with it.

Great interview, I wonder what will they do with the battle system. I'm hoping something similar to the original VF-esque combat.

We should clear up the misunderstanding about Sony's funding

http://i.imgur.com/OR68l7n.png

Shenmue 3 Funding and Budget Statement
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/ysnet/shenmue-3

There have been many questions concerning Shenmue 3’s budget and what outside sources will be added to the money collected through Kickstarter. I apologize for not having been more forthright in this area and would like to take this opportunity to help clarify the situation.

Ys Net and I have been putting in many long years trying to find a way to bring back a sequel that so many fans have waited so long for. After learning of Kickstarter, I knew it would be possible to get Shenmue 3 started. Wanting to make the best game possible, I also knew that I would have to look to more traditional means to obtain all the funds that would be needed to create the game I had envisioned.

Sony and Shibuya Productions have been wonderful partners because they believe in Shenmue and want to see the best for the fans and the game. Their investment in (and support of) Shenmue have helped to realize a sequel that will stand proud with its predecessors. While it is not business practice to discuss the specific details of such arrangements, I can say that with their assistance on the production and marketing end, and in Sony’s case with some publishing support as well, Ys Net is able to use more of the money we collect through Kickstarter purely for Shenmue 3’s development. It is also important to note that your funds are going strictly to Ys Net for development of Shenmue 3 – Sony and Shibuya Productions are not seeing a cent of your Kickstarter dollars.

The outpouring of support from all of you, the backers, has been so inspirational. I cannot thank you enough. Having reached our funding goal, I am excited to say that the Shenmue story will go on, and our journey with Ryo and Shenhua will continue. Fans will be able to enjoy the sequel they have waited so long for, and newcomers to the series will be introduced to a unique gaming experience.

Of course, like with any Kickstarter, additional funding will only help us make a better game. On top of everything Shenmue 3 will already bring, the Stretch Goals that I have laid out will add extra quests, events, and new gameplay systems that will make the game even more immersive and take the series to the next level. At the $5 million mark, there will be an all new gameplay feature I would be excited to be able to add to the Shenmue legacy. If we should make the $10 million Stretch Goal, a much larger, completely open world will be yours to explore.

Even if these Stretch Goals are not reached, Shenmue 3 will already be a sequel true to its name, and one we can all be proud of. It is my hope though, that together we can make this Shenmue just as revolutionary as the first two were.

I understand this statement may by late in coming. Going forward, we wish to be as open as possible concerning the game’s development. I would like to again ask for your cooperation and support in helping make Shenmue 3 the best that it can be.

Sincerely, Yu Suzuki

People think that Sony/Suzuki are using the Kickstarter to gauge interest, and after hitting 2 Million, Sony will step up and fund it. This is what many people believe (Thanks to misinformation from NeoGAF), and as a result, the Kickstarter pledges have slowed down considerably.

I imagine non-hardcore fans would be like " Why do I have to pledge more than $29 when Sony is going to fund it anyway? "

HOWEVER , it turns out Sony isn't really funding the game... They are just helping with the funding. In fact, Yu Suzuki has other sources of funding (Sony included) already secured, but he said he expect the majority of the budget to come from Kickstarter. Meaning Sony's not helping them by that much.

If we want to see a proper Shenmue 3, we must overfund the Kickstarter. And to do that, we should clear up this misunderstanding first so that non-fans would pledge.

Post this in whatever forum you frequent (Preferably NeoGAF, as it's quite influental on gaming media).

Re: We should clear up the misunderstanding about Sony's fun

I've seen idiots posting the same thing about Sony footing the entire development cost on Eurogamer, IGN and even in the Kickstarter comments. I'm doing my best to try to convince them otherwise but it's not sinking in.
Naturally, anything that produces drama will stick around, even if it's debunked. But we gotta do our best, the clock is ticking!

Re: We should clear up the misunderstanding about Sony's fun

As I've said in a precious thread, the fact of the matter is, NONE OF US know exactly how much external funding this game is getting. It's all speculation at the moment, that's as much as we do know!

Until that time comes, all we have is the KickStarter, that's the only thing at the moment that is giving us real monetary values! That's why we cannot assume that others are heavily funding this game until we know for sure. From the sounds of things we will never know for sure.

Therefore we MUST keep promoting the KickStarter and getting the word out there.
No matter how much you promote the Kickstarter, if the average gamer thinks a Multi-Billion corporation is footing the bill, why would he pledge? First we must clear this misunderstanding, then promote.

None of us know the exact amount of external funding, but we know Suzuki is expecting the majority of the budget to come from Kickstarter. This (and Sony executives comments) give clear indication that external funding isn't as much as people would like to believe.

Twitter push to reach $10 Million! | #10MillionToShenmue3

Yu Suzuki just dropped this bombshell:

http://i.imgur.com/Zgf3BSh.png

So unless you guys want to play Shenmue 3-lite, then we gotta push this to $10 Million, in anyway we can. So I thought we could take advantage of the social media to help with that.

#10MillionToShenmue3

In this hashtag, we will focus on the following:

- Explain that Yu Suzuki needs at least $10M from Kickstarter funding to make Shenmue 3 the proper Open World experience we all knew and loved.

- Clear the misunderstanding that Sony is footing the bill for the project, more information here .

- Overall promote the Shenmue series so that it might catch the interest of non-fans.

What say you? Am I going to find some energy here? or just cynicism? If this hashtags catches on, I'll create graphics like Avatars and sigs to help promote it.

Re: There Is No Reason For Negativity

When the alternative is waiting the rest of your life for absolutely nothing...?

I don't mind waiting til 2020 for Shenmue III as it was originally intended. Better that than a watered-down version that prematurely ends the franchise and ends up as one of the biggest disappointments in video game history.
Couldn't agree more.
The story isn't what made Shenmue special, it's the story, plus the exploration, plus the atmosphere, the combat, the world, etc... It's how everything melded together to create this extraordinary experience that is Shenmue. That's why I always hated the idea of Shenmue 3 in the form of a novel or a manga.

I'd have a good Shenmue 3, or non-at all IMO.

Re: The KS is a huge success and we shouldn't be discouraged

I think we need to look at this while noting that Shenmue's scope and targets are different from the other KS projects.
For example, for a 2D Platformer like Bloodstained, $5.5M is a huge success.

But for Shenmue which is an intricate open world franchise, having just $4M is not something special... Especially when considering the fact that Suzuki said he needs $10M to make the Shenmue 3 he wants to make, and the one people wanted to have.

Anyone worried that Yu might listen to the fans too much?

The translation in the stream was pretty bad, so some words might have lost it's meaning, but...

At one point in the stream, Suzuki said (paraphrasing) that up until now he always approached his projects while putting his own vision, creativity, and originality above everything else... But with Shenmue 3, he will be listening to the fans' feedback to shape the game.

Now I don't speak on behalf of the Shenmue community, but I sure as hell hope he continues doing what he has been doing in the past, and not let the fans compromise his vision. I don't want Shenmue 3 to be fan-service laden game.

Your thoughts?

Shenmue 1&2's 3D Character Modeler To Work On Shenmue 3

Yu Suzuki has revealed on the latest Twitch Stream that the modeler who did Shenhua's 3D model in Shenmue 1 and 2 is coming back to work on Shenmue 3. He was referred to as "Mr.Ito", presumably Takashi Ito . Yu Suzuki and Kenji Miyawaki also reiterated their commitment to improve the characters faces in Shenmue 3.

6h: Fans backed Shenmue 3 to see YOUR vision Yu! @yu_suzuki_jp @CedricBiscay

Thank god for Cedric.

This gave me an idea:

We contact Cedric and ask him to suggest to Suzuki a Backer-Poll, the poll would ask something along these lines: "Do you prefer if I shape Shenmue 3's around the fans' ideas and feedback, or would you rather have me go with my original vision for the game?"

Should make Suzuki understand what the fans want from him... We want Suzuki's Shenmue 3.

Re: Anyone worried that Yu might listen to the fans too much

Deleted my previous post.
I have no idea what this guy is freaking out about at this point, or what points he was ever trying to make to begin with, if you watched the post mortem already and know the general story and chapter structure of the Shenmue series, and KNOW that the story portion is completed and has been for some time. I dont get what the fuss is about.
Just because the story is completed doesn't mean it's set in stone... For example, maybe Suzuki planned for Ren or a fan-favorite character to die in Shenmue 3, but after polling the backers he decided against that.

Do I think Suzuki will make a drastic move such as that? No, I don't.
But there is a chance he might, especially since he has gone out of his way to say that he will abandon his old design philosophy of strictly following his vision and not be influenced by what others think.

I interpreted that comment as that they'll be making Ryo and Shenhua look more like they do in the Dreamcast-era art, not that they're LITERALLY going to use the old models.

How easy would it be to use the old models on UE4? Is it even possible?
Possible? Of course it is. You can import any model in UE4. ( I was playing around with UE4 and imported Vyse's model from Skies of Arcadia)

Re: Giant Bomb: Shenmue Endurance Run (Ongoing)

All the people judging the game from this Endurance Run are making me lose my mind... With a game like Shenmue, you can't appreciate the experience while there are 3 people laughing loudly and constantly talking over cutscenes about pointless real life tangents... I mean, immersion is basically Shenmue's strongest point, and all this chatter and snark completely obliterates it.

It's like watching a playthrough of Silent Hill 2 with Fast Forward Benny Hill playing in the background... It just makes everything trite and trivial.

Of course them being utterly incompetent at the game doesn't help, but that's not the main problem.

Re: Which version of Shenmue 3 would you rather have?

I dunno man, the changes to the combat system and Suzuki saying he wants to make it simpler and more cinematic makes me feel uneasy. The VF-based system was perfect in 1 & 2, it just needed a better camera... I hope it won't end up something like Arkham/Assassin's creed, that would be terrible.

I'd like something like Assassin's Creed actually. Not something like Arkham, Batman's flipping around in these games looks a little retarded to me, when you're pressing the punch button and he flies across the whole room because the next punchable dude is standing way too far from him. But AC would be cool, waiting for your chance to counter and so on. Can't really agree on the fighting system of Shenmue I and II being perfect, I'd even say it's far from that..
What's your peeve with the old fighting system? I honestly cannot think of any faults... It's weighty and satisfying, with considerable depth.

Honestly pulling counters in that fighting system has been way more satisfying than any counter in Ass. Creed.
Just pressing the attack button and Ryo does context sensitive moves isn't engaging to me... Sure it looks cool, but it stops being fun after the third fight.

UE4 is incredibly versatile, it can be tailored to any developer's needs.
If by chance you don't like the out-of-the-box settings/shaders, you can write your own. The UE4 source code is available to the public... You can edit or add anything you want, provided you have the skill.

Seems YSnet managed to write their own Shenmue-esque shaders that resembles the previous games vibes... I'm excited to see what they achieved and how different it looks compared to the footage we've already seen.

Still, they're pretty similar. The motifs are same, the spheres, the dragon/phoenix illustration in the background... I would like if Shenmue 3 retained those things.

Was thinking about Shenmue 2 and suddenly got curious about something... What happens if you just stand there in Languishan (The first place in Guilin before you meet Shenhua) until Night comes? Where would Ryo Sleep? How does that place look at night?

I don't have my Xbox around right now so I can't test it.
