Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

A random thing I hadn't really noticed before, about one of the objects in the Hazuki residence. In the kitchen next to the fridge is a kind of box, standing on the floor. It may not be immediately apparent what it is.
http://www.mobygames.com/images/shots/l/45602-shenmue-dreamcast-screenshot-let-s-get-some-food-from-the-kitchen.jpg
I realized it's most likely a container designed for storing raw rice ready for cooking.
Some actual rice containers for comparison...

Thought I'd mention it in case anyone may have wondered about it. :)

Vote for Shenmue 3 in the largest independent Xbox One Mag

X-ONE Magazine held a poll to vote for your top 3 games that Xbox One needs.

ONE OF THE OPTIONS IS *** SHENMUE 3 *** !!!

Therefore... we shall Tornado Kick this poll, as Crazy Shenmue fans we are!!!

!!! LET'S GO ===>>> http://poll.fm/4mzf8 !!!

‪#‎SaveShenmue‬

P.S.: Even though Phil Spencer tweeted that he's not interested, we shall rock this poll anyway! (Read why in the 2nd "spoiler") Do you remember the PSM_OK poll? Then the votes were with comments. NOW, the votes are with checkboxes. THEREFORE, they will not be able to deny any of our votes.

You know what I mean? The votes are obvious and counted by a system and not by a imperfect human being. :P

SO, if we TOP this poll, then it will DEFINITELY appear in their Magazine, *especially* when *themselves* add the "Shenmue 3 option", THEREFORE our "SHENMUE 3" votes are more welcomed than ever!

Just do it! :D I have to mention something for everyone who hesitate:

Our intentions is not where we want Shenmue 3 to end up, but we want to top this poll so as SHENMUE 3 will get more *recognition* and the fanbase alike, something that will advertise the power of our demand.

If Shenmue 3 TOP this poll, then it will *definitelly* appear on their Magazine. (Terry's Invitation to Hell, it's 5 secs job to vote anyway...)

Discussion from various users at the Shenmue 500k group. They compared it to older existing trademarks and they do not match up.
Objection! That's not a decisive evidence. A mere discussion with some members of the Shenmue 500k group, with questionable skills of analysis and/or experience on the subject, can not be accepted as a conclusive proof by this court. Your Honor, I suggest that we must penalize prosecutor Ziming.

Help induct Shenmue into The Library of Congress!

http://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/warren-spector-induct-shenmue-into-the-library-of-congress-game-canon-saveshenmue?recruiter=54807131&utm_campaign=twitter_link_action_box&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=share_petition

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf-MK4599A8

What is Shenmue?

Shenmue was a video game created by SEGA Programmer Yu Suzuki. It was developed during the production cycles of both the Sega Saturn and The Sega Dreamcast and it was released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000.

Why is Shenmue Important?

It was notable for influencing many aspects of modern video games. It was influential in the use of Quick-Time Events, an aspect later seen in Resident Evil 4 and Heavy Rain. It was a game that preceeded Grand Theft Auto 3 in using full-3D free-roaming and real-life weather effects, and allows in-game interactions that weren't possible before. It was one of first true cinematic experiences in modern games, with an amazing story that attracts a huge fanbase in both Japan and The West during the time/

Despite the influence Shenmue had in modern gaming, the franchise remains dormant after the end of the Dreamcast and the lack of sales in Shenmue 2 in Xbox. It's been 14 years since the first Shenmue game and 12 years since Shenmue 2, and yet there has yet to be a re-release of the first 2 games in digital marketplaces (Steam/Playstation Network/XBox Live/GoG) nor has Shenmue 3 ever been announced by Sega or any developer/publisher in the last decade. And thus, we believe that Shenmue is in the risk of being forgotten and ignored by modern gaming culture.

And thus, we believe that Shenmue deserves to be preserved in order to remain remembered by the video game industry, and we believe that the best place for Shenmue to belong is in the Game Canon of United States The Library of Congress.

What is The Game Canon?

The Game Canon is a list of video games to be considered for preservation by the Library of Congress. The creation of this list is "an assertion that digital games have a cultural significance and a historical significance."

The current list of video games being preserved by the Library of Congress under The Game Canon is as followed:

-Spacewar!
-Star Raiders
-Zork
-Tetris
-SimCity
-Super Mario Bros. 3
-Civilization I/II
-Doom
-Warcraft series
-Sensible World of Soccer

And thus, we believe that Shenmue deserves to be on this list. Its influence on modern gaming makes it equal alonside Doom and Super Mario Brothers. And by having Shenmue on this list, it can finally bring back interest to the franchise by the gaming community, which will allow Sega to pick interest in remastering the game on modern digital marketplaces and allowing Yu Suzuki to continue production on Shenmue 3, where Ryo can finally face his revenge on Lan Di.....

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

For me this is one of the quintessential things about Shenmue: http://youtu.be/YIhi0LN6h-M (video also here: http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=46812&p=1073835#p1073825)

The interesting and/or deep conversations, with interesting and/or deep unique personalities of the Shenmue world. The empathy that you progressively feel for the characters and the bonding you're building with.

Furthermore, the beauty, the artistry, the chronology, the geography, the mythology, the culture, the setting, the atmosphere, the music, the emotions, the ambition, the desire, the patience, the suspense, the philosophy, the romanticism, the pureness, the simplicity (being grounded - feeling like a real life world), the realism, the humour, the agony, the spirituality and all the experience that is being projected to you and immerse you in it, that maybe cannot be expressed by words or in that single video.

Personally, I see more than a game in this piece of digital interactive entertainment called Shenmue, something that transcends games.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

I think a similar thing whenever you hear Yamagishi-san's random words of wisdom. He's easily one of the most well-written characters in video games, despite the simplicity. Everyone knows someone like him, and to have such an out'n'out "normal" character in a game, even as "grounded" as Shenmue is just something else altogether. And for all the shit that the game gets for poor voice acting, I reckon his is actually spot-on.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Agreed on that, Yamagashi is one of my favourite characters from the original too and as you say, the most well written. I would always go especially to him after each segment of the story would change, just to listen to his words of wisdom, even when he didn't know what Ryo was looking for, he always had something interesting to say at least. Plus he teaches Ryo one of my favourite martial arts moves in the series: the Double Blow (which is way OP'd in the first game, especially if you level it up to the advanced stage). I was happy to find that hidden cutscene with him just a couple of years back, which was a real nice little scene where he talks about the Sword Handguard(?) with Ryo. Never knew that was in there and just found it by chance. That old man had his head on straight anyway and only Jianmin in S2 really came close to being on the same level of likeability for me (although he feigns ignorance/being simple-minded when he's definitely far wiser than he pretends to be).

Re: Shenmue 2D

Sorry to bump this, but I wanted to share a concept art screen I made based on these sprites, because I really liked them. Hope you don't mind.

http://mooncalfstudios.com/images/shenmue%20adventure.jpg

I'd love to see this happen. Imagine if 1 & 2 were remade with this style of gameplay, but with Streets of Rage style battle gameplay mixed with this old school point & click adventure. Shenmue 3 could be made on a budget of something insanely small, if it too followed this style. I doubt Yu would get behind the idea, but it's nice to dream.

Re: Yu Suzuki at Gamelab 2014 (Information & Multimedia)

I went and translated the whole interview, while I was at it - Yeah, school's over. Thank you for the heads up, though, Fenix.

One of the most acclaimed people by the spectators over at the Gamelab was Yu Suzuki, the japanese who was Sega's soul for years, father of games like Outrun, Virtua Fighter and Shenmue. He was the recipient of the Legend Award by the Interactive Arts and Sciences Academy of Spain. We had the privilege of chatting with him.

R3: Yu Suzuki, it is an honour to share a moment with a legend such as yourself.

YS : Thank you so much, I am very pleased to be here in Spain, receiving such an important award.

R3: Since it would be understandably hard for you to pick one game from all of those you've created, I'm allow myself to do so. The one which has marked me the most was Outrun, since, I'm not sure you're aware of it, sparked the hope, in the youngsters playing at the arcade, that one day we'd be driving a Ferrari with a marvellous blonde by our side.

YS : It pleases me very much, that there are still people reminiscing about the game. In fact, while developing Outrun, our main goal was to distance ourselves from the racing arcades of the time, in which racing against the time and other cars was the main goal. I wanted to set us apart from that, creating a sense of luxury and fantasy and that's why we picked a red Ferrari and a blonde girl by our side, with an outstretched arm, in a more relaxed setting.

R3: Well, the era of Outrun is the age of excellence of the arcade saloons, places regarded as temples in which people would gather up. Are you in any way sorry about their disappearance? How do you see gaming Industry's evolution?

YS : Truthfully, it saddens me that these places keep on disappearing throughout every city. This demand and way of playing waned due to other platforms such as consoles and, more recently, mobile phones and tablets... Times have changed. I feel sorry about it because you no longer touch the machines, such as punching in boxing games, or how friends would laugh at you when you would slap the joystick in frustration when you lost. It was something else.

R3: Well the arcade saloons have faded away because industry has changed the criteria, with new technology arising. With the arrival of consoles, videogaming has also been somewhat democratized. Now, in a new change of paradigm, the internet shows up. How do you think it'll affect the future of videogaming?

YS : I think that, instead of playing solitarily, the experience is always heightened when shared with friends, so the presence of other people beside you is something positive. Nowadays, you can even play with someone who's anywhere in the world, live, and that enhances the experience further.

R3: If you had known more precisely how the evolution of Internet gaming would come about, would you have developed any of your games differently?

YS : If I had know how popular the Internet would become, I'd have made some things differently. For instance, the open-world of Shenmue would have been different, as I'd have made an effort to emulate the real life of a society, we would have striven to create a completely living game because the technology would then have allowed us to.

R3: Let's roll back the years all the way to the mid 80's when an arcade named Hang-On first appeared, the first game I recall in which you could simulate riding a motorcycle. Do you regard these sort of machines as incipient to later technologies such as motion-detecting technology?

YS : At that time, we started creating games and their mechanics with the available technology, such as joysticks - it was simpler, and also less realistic. With Hang-On, we were able to deliver an all but total sensation of realism. What I really wanted to have was a real motorcycle, instead of the ones made of plastic, with it's working engine, blowing out smoke and all - but, obviously, that would have made for unbearable maintenance costs.

R3: And what do you think of new technologies, such as XBox's Kinect, or even Oculus Rift's and Project Morpheus' virtual-reality proposals?

YS : More than ten years ago, while I was still a part of Sega's developing team, we already experimented with virtual-reality, and now I believe it is almost ready to be shown to the public, and not only concerning video-games. Virtual-reality has immense potential in fields like Medicine and Tourism.

R3: Reviewing your creations, it would be impossible not to address the arrival of the polygons. You are the developer of Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter, the unforgettable fighting game, which incorporated those big pixels and enormous polygons in order to convey depth. How, do you think, should gaming industry acknowledge that massive generational leap?

YS : Before the use of polygons became widespread, graphics were much better, as the drawings were really good and colourful, but a more realistic perspective was the important thing lacking. Surely, with Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter, the graphic design was a step behind, regarding two dimensional games, but we were able to convey real life depth and perspective in a much more accurate way. I felt like that was the right time to make the leap over to the new 3D technology, aware of how drastic of a change it would be.

R3: After the 3D world, the next big step for video-gaming has been drawing itself closer to photorealism, to the hyper-realist graphics. You have, for instance, experimented with it in what many hold as your masterpiece, Shenmue . Do you believe the industry has adapted itself well to this new tendency?

YS : When it came to start developing Shenmue , the cinematic scenes were fundamental, because it was a game in which the story, above action, was the most important thing. What we were striving for, was to make an interactive film, with QTE sequences and a lot of video sequences that made up the story as you'd go. Nowadays, technology has allowed for hyper-realism, so I believe the challenge is now not so much in achieving an image as much as enhancing gameplay.

R3: Shenmue 's story is so extensive, it wouldn't have fit into a single video-game, so we got Shenmue II . However, the story remains unfinished and each year, or at least in cyclical fashion, fans keep on pleading you to go on. There have been rumours, at the last E3, that we may be close to a third instalment. So... What do you want to say to the legions of fans, worldwide?

YS : (Laughs) Each year, there's a new rumour that we're making Shenmue III , and, even though 14 years have passed, the fans keep on waiting. I sincerely appreciate it, and, if the correct circumstances arise, I would be willing.

R3: Well, when people start handling out awards recognizing your career, one might think it would be coming to an end, but that doesn't seem to be Suzuki-san's case. Do you have any projects around the corner?

YS : I like drawing a lot, and, of course, I have a passion for video games, but what I like doing the most is creating things. Right now, I have a couple of projects going on for mobile phones, consoles and even thematic parks. Counting on important partners, surely interesting things will happen.

R3: Here in the auditorium there are a lot of young developers, full of enthusiasm, who have their own projects. Naturally, with an important figure such as yourself present, I would like to ask you what word of advice would you give to a young video-game developer?

YS : Well, nowadays we are able to rely on technology and programming languages such as Unity, which have made things easier for everyone, since you no longer have the need to count on a big studio to realize your ideas while leading you the way. The one advice I have for you is, do not try emulate what others have made; hence, I invite you to develop your own projects with their own personality.

Area Collision Data - Remove || Swap

http://i.imgur.com/XWta03g.jpg

This is a tutorial on how to remove the area collision data of any area of Shenmue, or, how to swap that data between two areas.

Video demonstration (of the collision removal) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zkTar6CDBE

Steps:
- Open with a hex-editor the MAPINFO.BIN file of the area you want. In our case, we will work with the file of Dobuita, found in folder "SCENE/0X/D000" (0X = 01 or 02 or 03 ...).

- Search (CTRL+F) for "COLS" and find the first reference. Start highlighting from COLS and go all the way down ...

http://i.imgur.com/3sFf0AZ.png

- ... until you find the first reference of "REGD". Stop exactly before REGD (that is not select any part from REGD or after it).

http://i.imgur.com/kx7SOuo.png

- ... With all these lines being highlighted, press the Delete (DEL) button in your keyboard.

http://i.imgur.com/5YtNXT4.gif
- Save the modified file. [Proceed to the necessary steps to create a self-bootable image file.]

About Swapping the clipping information between two MAPINFO.BIN files of two different areas:
- The only difference from the above steps, is to not Delete the highlighted part of the file, but Cut (CTRL+X) it and move it to the other file that you want to swap the clipping information with.
- That means you have to replace the "COLS ... (until before REGD)" lines of the one file, with the "COLS ... (until before REGD)" lines of the other file.

===

Things to improve/fix:
- Programmable camera movements and angles of a specific area has been removed. That is, for example, when you go to a parking lot to practice or to a vending machine to buy a drink, you will not see the usual camera movements and angles. FIXED!
- Wrap points has been removed. You will not be able to enter another area (unless, for example, if you open the door to enter the Hazuki Residence), or enter the Tomato Convenience Store, the You Arcade et cetera. FIXED!
- The vertical collision data is also removed, thus gravity is off and, in areas like Yamanose, the height of the player (Ryo) is not consistent with the height of the ground. FIXED!
- You can still not pass through some objects/models, like: humans, bikes, shutters (when the shops close) et cetera.

Notes:

- Even as a "young'n", newbie to Shenmue modding/hacking, while working on that I learned some things: go for the *crazy* way, try different (crazy, all and any) ways, trust your hunches, pay really close attention to details, think like the programmer (how they could have put things in a file et cetera).

- My thought process (wall-of-text): First, I thought to use the MAPINFO.BIN file of the folder 0000. That file doesn't contain any clipping information. I compared it visually with other mapinfo files and noticed some parts look similar (like the one from REGD and below). First I replaced in the mapinfo of Dobuita (D000, that was the area to make all my experiments) all the lines from the top until before REGD, with the ones from the mapinfo of 0000 folder, that is the lines from the top until before REGD. The end result was this . As you can see, a lot of textures, models et cetera has been removed. Then I thought about mapinfo swapping, like when you do it to access the beta versions of some areas (like Yamanose's and Sakuragaoka's). There you have to copy from after the ECAM part until the end. And thus I thought that before the ECAM part, there is all the information about textures, models et cetera. Combined with the thought that the part from REGD until the end remains the same (like with the case when I swapped D000's with 0000's), I end up removing the part from ECAM (including ECAM) until before REGD. [I removed ECAM, too, because I thought it is a command and so when it is triggered it tries to load something from the memory, which it can't find, when it has been removed from the file...] But end up doing that after several tries; first I removed the part after ECAM until before COLS, then from COLS util before REGD, and other tries. Also, I just removed the COLS, COLI et cetera parts, to see if that will do the job, too, but with no success. So, after several tries, I figured that you need to remove the lines only from COLS until before REGD (and so the part from ECAM until before COLS can remain intact). And, here's the general story of how it happened...

Re: Shenmue Beta Debug Flags

Yes you can skip events.

One day I started a new game and when I got out to Yamanose the first time, I activated all 1000+ flags and never had to see the cat scene or the old lady either.

So maybe, the flags tell the game engine "yes he did this" which is why u also get the notebook update.

Amihama (FREE 7 Remix)

A week ago when LanDC posted his White Tiger mix, I wasn't kidding around when I said it made me want to do a Shenmue remix. Here goes nothing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrlO05LCGT0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrlO05LCGT0

:::::: DOWNLOAD LINK BELOW ::::::

https://sites.google.com/site/redrumb1/Amihama.mp3

This right here is a remix of the New Yokosuka Harbor (FREE 7) song that I recently made. It's a Shenmue song has never been remixed before, so why not? I worked my ass off trying to get this composition as close as possible, with a bit of added arrangement and my own spin on the track. It also features some FREE 6 on it to give it that Harbor Super Mix type of feel. If you know what Streets of Rage is and know what the song titles are, you'll get what I mean by that.

Also, I promise you that there is more where this came from. I'm planning on doing a Shenmue OST remix album and this will be one of the tracks on it. It might take a few months, but it'll get done. I already have concepted what I want to do, which are all tracks that have no MIDIs and have never been done before properly by anybody.

Anyways, enjoy this one. Feedback is always welcome.

Empireonline Top 100 Games

Just saw Empireonline.com's top 100 games and nice to see Shenmue mentioned not once but twice. (No.7 and No.51)

Seeing as there hasn't been much news lately i just thought I'd share. I always like seeing Shenmue so high up in these greatest games of all time lists.

Re: Empireonline Top 100 Games

For those that don't want to do work:

http://www.empireonline.com/features/10 ... ?title=100

I'm glad that they put in Shenmue, especially at such a high spot, but I still have to complain and say that Shenmue 2 is the better game.

Rising Sun (Dawn Remix)

My new Shenmue remix is complete. Originally, I was working on Naoyuki's Bike, but then I started on Dawn, which I've titled Rising Sun.

I think I may have beaten my White Tiger mix with this one.

RELEASE: Shenmue Beta Disc 3 Exploration Mod V1 OUTDATED

Hello.

I am proud to announce this new release.

This release is called the Exploration Mod. It has finally hit version 1.

What is it?
This is a mod of Shendream's BETA release of Shenmue 1 Disc 3.
This mod allows you to walk around most areas without clipping. This allows you to walk through walls and most objects.
It also contains playable maps for Beta Yamanose, Beta Sakuragaoka, and Wish Road!

Why?
I made this for my own purpose but I wanted to share it with everyone. I always wanted to go wherever I wanted to when inside of shops and stuff. It was also made as a framework for my upcoming bike mod.

How?
Each mapinfo.bin has been hacked to remove all clipping data.

Who?
The original clipping method was developed by Giorgio.
The beta maps were hacked by Wude.
The Beta itself was released by Shendream.
The grunt work was done by me :)

Which areas can I free roam?
Here is the list: D000 - Retail Dobuita
JD00 - Retail Sakuragaoka
JD01 - Beta Sakuragaoka
JHD0 - Hazuki Residence
JOMO - Ryo's House
JU00 - Retail Yamanose
JU01 - Beta Yamanose
MFSY - Harbor
MKSG - Old Warehouse District
DYKZ - Nagai Industries
DURN - Lapis Fortune Teller
DTKY - Maeda Barber Shop
DSLT - Slot House
DSLI - Bar Linda
DSKI - Global Travel Agency
DRSA - Russiya China Shop
DRME - Manpukuken Ramen
DPIZ - Bob's Pizzaeria
DKTY - Antique Shop
DKPA - Nana's Karaoke Bar
DJAZ - MJQ Jazz Bar
DGCT - You Arcade
DCHA - Ajiichi
DBYO - Bar Yokosuka
DBHB - Heartbeats Bar
TATQ - Tattoo Parlor
JABE - Abe Store Candy Shop
MKYU - Harbor Lounge
YDB1 - Hazuki Basement
D001 - Wish Road

How do I use it? Just like in the original beta release, you can call these specific maps up with the main debug menu.
For the shops that are closed when you go into them with the menu, just use the 4th player controller debug menu to set the time in the game to a time where the shop is open!

Are there bugs?
Yes! Like all arcane Shenmue hacks, bugs will exist.
-Ryo's House is completely broken and invisible. (This will be fixed in the next version)
-Random textures disappear and pop in when you are walking through walls. (This is normal and cannot be fixed.)

NOTE: You cannot play through this as normal!!!!!! It is disc 3 AND the maps are hacked to the point where the normal game will not flow and cutscenes may not trigger. It is for exploring only!

What can I play it on?
Confirmed working on NullDC, DEmul, Reicast, Chankast, and actual DC hardware via CD-R or GDEMU.

Re: Shenmue on Co-Optitude

How is making fun of this game going to generate good press? I'm sorry to be a downer on anyone who likes these people but perpetuating the the same shitty jokes that originate from people who only ever played the first 15 minutes of the game are not going to help us get out of the niche hell hole Shenmue has been stuck in.

Im so tired of shit like this. All everyone ever associates Shenmue with is Sailors and feeding cats. Thats like 1% of the game but for some reason many of the ADHD who make throw back reviews, impressions, lets plays, rankings etc they all focus on just the BS 1% and sometimes I think it has tarnished the Shenmue name so badly to the point where I think Sega thinks everyone see's Shenmue as a joke.

Sorry, I think I used a different concept of "image". I meant "statue". I've updated the OP with a graphical comparison.
