Yep. After nearly a decade, it's done, people :D

HISTORY OF THE SHENMUE II CHARACTER DATABASE PROJECT
Ever since casting my eyes upon screenshots of Shenmue published in the (now defunct) UK magazine Computer and Video Games, I have been absolutely enthralled by the series. This game was definitely something different. As the famous tagline proclaimed in the trailers before its release – RPG had changed. Sure, hailing the game as being its own exciting new “genre” with a somewhat silly acronym as its name (FREE- Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment) was being a tad overzealous perhaps, but you had to admire Yu Suzuki’s ambition for this game. When I finally got to play it on the Christmas morning of 2000, it did not disappoint. The atmosphere created was just amazing to me – a realistic, living, breathing town with over 300 individual characters – all with their own specific daily routines and, in supplementary materials, all named and given detailed biographies! Throw in the fantastic music and the engaging (if not completely original) story and you really had something special. And this was only part one of the saga...

Bundled with the game was the ‘Shenmue Passport’ disc. Through the Dreamcast’s internet connection, this enabled access to all sorts of information about the game, as well as ranking leaderboards for the various mini-games and the chance to get exclusive capsule toys. One of the best features was the character profile section however; as you met and conversed with the characters during a playthrough, their profiles would gradually be added to the Passport. Now to some, giving all 300+ characters names, stats, and biographies may seem extraneous, (especially given characters that Ryo can’t even speak to have detailed information about them!) but it really shows the love and care put into the game by the developers and the amount of depth to Shenmue that few games have matched.

PASSPORT EXPIRED
The Passport service was eventually taken offline in April 2002, but thankfully the character profiles had also been published in Prima’s strategy guide book for the game, so the information was still readily available to fans.
Which brings us to the sequel game, Shenmue II – which I got the following Christmas in 2001. This sadly could end up being the last game in the series, despite it ending on a cliffhanger and at a game-changing point in the saga’s story. Nonetheless, the sequel’s world was even bigger than the first’s– Ryo travels to Hong Kong to continue his quest, with most of its areas completely dwarfing Shenmue I’s in terms of size, as well as the amount of characters – around 700. There was also a lot more mini-games and sidequests to discover, and fans generally agree it is more action-packed and that the plot moves a lot quicker than the first game (though some will argue Shenmue I’s atmosphere has more charm) And what of these 700-odd characters? Were they all named and profiled as per the original game? As it turns out, yes – but these were not readily available to the fans outside of Japan.

Firstly, unlike the first Shenmue, there was no Passport. There was no Prima guide either, as the Dreamcast version had been cancelled in America. America eventually saw an updated version of Shenmue II on the Microsoft Xbox, and a Prima guide was finally published. However, unlike the Shenmue I book, there were only profiles on the main characters; Ryo, Shenhua, Xiuying, Fangmei, Ren, Joy, Wong, Lan Di, Dou Niu and Yuan. The Xbox version, with the new snapshot feature, did include profiles on some of the other characters; unlocked when you took pictures of them, but it didn't come close to having profiles for all the characters. Would we ever know the names and backgrounds of the reams of anonymous characters?

A FAN EFFORT
Shortly after I had completed Shenmue II, I looked around on the internet for fansites/information about the series, ultimately finding the excellent Shenmue Dojo website. I joined the forums, and this was in fact one of the first message boards I signed up to on the internet. My handle on the forum was (and still is) ‘Miles Prower’, as I am also a long-time fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series of games (and Sega games in general). I made a lot of good friends through the Dojo community and have many fond memories associated with the forums. I think between us we have probably discussed every single aspect of the games to death, but as many fans will attest, you find or notice something new with every playthrough of these wonderful games. Not to mention the very active hacking/modding scene that developed, mostly headed by longtime member LanDC, in which reams of unused content was discovered and many interesting and or humourous modifications made to the game. I still get a warm nostalgic feeling every time I watch LanDC’s Road to Amihama videos in particular.

And indeed, the question of whether detailed character profiles existed for Shenmue II’s cast was raised in discussion. In a thread from 2003, a member named Eek the Cat shared some scans of a guidebook he owned published in Japan called the Shenmue II Perfect Guidebook. The scans showed that there were indeed names and profiles for each and every character.
Eek was even kind enough to put all of the scans together on a CD for me and mail it to me, and even threw in a couple of audio CD’s he had compiled containing music from Shenmue II (sadly the second game never had any official soundtracks released).

The problem? Being that this book was from Japan, the character names were in Chinese and the information in Japanese. Through discussion in the topic, another forum member called khien agreed to help with translating the character names as she could read Chinese. And so began the effort to translate the many character profiles. I began by gradually posting them within the topic, and then eventually creating a website (which, thanks to Web Archive, you can still view here , albeit with most of the images missing).

Continuing into 2004 and beyond, progress was quite slow, mainly due to me starting university. Khien’s life ended up becoming quite busy as well, but thanks to the efforts of another forum member, Oda Ryo, the translation work still continued. The forum member Kiyuu (possibly Japan’s biggest Shenmue fan, and often referred to as the ‘Shenmue Queen’), also informed me that another book existed, the Shenmue II Complete Guide, which contained profiles for characters not included in the Perfect Guidebook; namely those for the many pedestrians who wander the streets of Hong Kong. I made the effort to acquire this book myself and make scans for the remaining profiles.

RESSURECTING THE PROJECT
As the years went on, however, my free time became less and less. I studied for three years at university and after graduating in 2008, I was working full time; in short I was growing up. It was also looking increasingly unlikely that a Shenmue III would ever emerge. Life went on. However, my enthusiasm to complete the project was somewhat fired up again when Peter from the forums (who most likely owns the biggest Shenmue collection in Ireland) got in touch with me on Facebook asking if I was still working on it, as the Dojo staff had managed to get an interview with one of the voice actors for the English dub of Shenmue II (a very interesting read by the way, which can be found here , and they had requested that video clips be assembled of the characters he voiced, which he supplied a list of – but only by name and brief descriptions. Using the information from my project I helped with finding some of them. I then found myself wanting to get the project finished once and for all, and got back in touch with Oda Ryo who happily assisted me with getting the remaining names translated.

I had also spoken to the member ‘thegreatchai’, who had also been attempting to catalogue the character information on her wiki site, and over time we assisted each other greatly. I began transferring the information to an Excel spreadsheet with the intention of creating a complete database of all the Shenmue II characters – which after assembling a numbered list I discovered there are exactly 700 – surely a deliberate intention of the creators? At any rate, after a few months work the project was finally finished. I am glad that this information is now easily accessible to Shenmue fans, and while some may consider me obsessive or downright insane for pursuing with the project, it was worth it for a game series that I love so much and one day hope will be continued in some form. We can but hope. The saga may still go on....

Please feedback and let me know if you spot any mistakes or errors, or any factoids about the characters that I may have missed. Most of all, enjoy :D

Re: Ever see the NPC at the harbor with strange device on mo

Are you sure that's what he means? That's a pretty standard storage container thing. I'm sure all mopeds/motorbikes I have one. Apart from in films. It's not cool to have one for chase scenes.
it's not identical but it's similar, same moped style. it's hard to find one identical to the 80s. these are the closest I can find

Re: Ever see the NPC at the harbor with strange device on mo

yep, thats it. i have never seen something like that before. i suppose it one of those things that is more common in the east. mopeds are also more popular there so makes sense.

so its a device for stabilising the storage box . interesting. does it have a name?

maybe i will try to upload an picture of it at some point, but it wont be good quality. if someone else wants to then feel free. thanks guys
That device is called "demae-ki," that means "delivery machine/device." You can buy one, if you're interested. ;-)

The big springs are shock absorbers which prevent soup from spilling while delivering soup noodles, like soba or ramen. Certain noodles are delivered in bowls filled with soup in Japan, so they need such device.

Re: Chi you men boss of the bosses??

thanks for the clarification kiyuu.
It's my pleasure! :D

i have another question but again i don't want to start a new topic- maybe you could help me since you know japanese.

not sure whether its ever been discussed, its regarding the bad ending of shen 2

in the english subtitled version lan di says to shenhua ' i will take your power for the CHIYOUMEN'
but in the english spoken version land di says ' i will take your power for the CHIYOU'

wonder if it was a translation error.

i suppose chiyou makes more sense since we know that its a some kind of supernatural entity. but then again the chiyoumen leaders (at least some of them) might have minor supernatural powers.

some might see this as only minor importance, since to empower the chiyou is equivalent of empowering the chiyoumen. anyway a clarification would be great.
Lan Di clearly says "Shiyuu" in Japanese, which means Chiyou, not Chiyoumen. Translation error, most likely.

Re: Chi you men boss of the bosses??

Thanks for further info on the four symbols, Kiyuu. I didn't know yet that the center is a yellow dragon and that even that matches up with the building in Kowloon. But yeah, Tentei is definately the boss above the other four bosses and I'm sure that's what Yu Suzuki ment with his gesture.
You're quite welcome!

We've talked about Tentei repeatedly in the past, just like you see in the following topic:

Re: Old lady in Sakuragaoka giving hint to translate the let

Finally got her to appear after I looked at the notebook guide for some hints. You have to go to the Ajiichi first, get the hint that Guangji could help and when you find him at the vending machine don't buy him a drink. When you walk back to Sakuragaoka the old lady will be there and you have to talk to her twice to get the hint about Xia.
I was a sunny day and close to 3 p.m. just as a side note.

By the way, the bio is waaay off on the age. I've look in the official guide and she's actually 78.
Makes a lot more sense then 44...

Re: Shenmue scene compilations and other videos

New video! Ryo is just to stupid for the forklift job.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DD2aLOSHmY

@johnvivant: No the Arm Break Fire in the video is leveled well under moderate. It's just the full version of the move. Once the enemy is grabbed you have to press X for the first armlock extension and then X+A for the second one on the ground, both with the right timing. I have trained it to moderate in that playthrough but despite the description implying that it changes I didn't notice any visual differences.

BlueMue Shenmue videos

I'm currently working on the final phase of putting together a couple of videos with multiple rare, funny or otherwise interesting scenes and also other videos about Shenmue.

I'll start with what I've already uploaded in the past. Some of those are really old, starting in 2008.
This topic will house every Shenmue related video that I've made from now on. :D

Ren, killed by Ryo's hands?

http://cdn.escapistmagazine.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/698/698943.jpg

So, how about these concept artworks? I haven't been this interested nor pissed off in a long time. I'm vehemently against spoilers, yet hungry for even a shard of new Shenmue information. It's a shame we have to see such major spoilers before playing the game (IF we ever do see it in action), but it's oh so intriguing. On the bright side however, these concepts may slightly differ from the final version. Even if they don't, they're vague enough that much is still left to be discovered.

On to the topic at hand... I posted about this on the 500K Facebook page as well, but I figured it was time to reappear on the Dojo because this theory is worth spreading. My theory is that a deceased Ren is being carried off by Akira (Ryo) in the 10th concept image. More importantly, Ren has been killed by the hands of his friend, Akira. Firstly, at the top left corner of image 9, that's an alternately dressed Ren. In the background, a horde of people appear to be charging after Akira for an epic battle. Is Ren leading these people into battle, or is he there for Akira? Remember the concept art of Ren on a horse? It's possible that the Chiyoumen could entice Ren with promises of riches if he joins them. I would say he's there to support Akira, but who knows. They succeed in this battle apparently, defeating Lan Di as Yu Suzuki so wonderfully spoiled for us. That's assuming Lan Di didn't already meet his demise long before this scene.

http://cdn.escapistmagazine.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/698/698955.jpg

So what next? As you can see by the map, this epic battle depicted in image 9 occurs somewhere in Western China. In concept image 10, Akira is holding someone's apparent lifeless body. I'm convinced by the clothing that it's Ren as seen in image 9, minus the bandana. If you'll notice, Akira is now ironically wearing a white headband (to honor his former friend?). What happened? If the epic battle is over and Ren didn't perish there, what killed him in the following chapter 10 that appears to take place far away near Beijing (?). I'm thinking after Lan Di's defeat, Ren and Ryo now have access to both mirrors, and Ren's desire to unlock the treasures of the Qing Dynasty overcomes him. According to Master Chen, there will be trouble if those two mirrors come together. Whether that's in the form of a mythical beast resurrecting on Earth, or that's simply a metaphor for something else very grim, I think it's something that needs to be avoided. Akira may have no choice but to stop Ren, which is why he's still honoring his friend with the headband, and the fact that he's clasping his body doesn't signify a hate-filled battle.

If you'll remember, there's a flashback scene in Shenmue I where little Ryo gets into a fight with a friend at school. Iwao tells him, "A friend you can trust is a true friend indeed." I believe this flashback has a lot of significance, since everyone warns Ryo that Ren isn't exactly trustworthy. It shows in his incessant talk of money, and his giddiness towards the Qing Dynasty treasure. It's obvious that Ryo and Ren have grown closer by the end of Shenmue II, but Ren still may not be the most honest and loyal friend in the world. Thoughts?

Re: Eurogamer: 'Shenmue 3 as close to being announced.....

One of the user comments in response to the article:

"I think comparing Shenmue to Skyrim or GTA is completely wrong for numerous reasons. The article groups them together based on surface qualities (open world, lots of NPCs), and then assumes Shenmue wouldn't stand up against the other two. How wouldn't it? And how are the other two games more progressive? Just because they came out later, with bigger budgets?

GTA is a game about running errands for morons in cutscenes and blowing shit up and killing people. You cannot live in GTA's world; you have to destroy it. It's designed that way. Skyrim is a spreadsheet game about thousands of interchangeable NPCs, quests, and loot items. It's about low-level goal attainment and RPG stat building and a core loop of addictive play. I don't want to be addicted to a game. I don't want a game designed to manipulate me to keep me playing.

What about Shenmue? Shenmue is about co-existing with the environment. You don't blow up Yokosuka or Kowloon, you walk through their streets, talk to their residents, and follow leads in an amateur detective adventure. The gameplay varies between exploration, fighting, QTEs (done well!), mini-games, and context specific gameplay moments like the tape recorder sequence in Shenmue 2.

There's no repetitive mind-numbing violence in a Shenmue game the way there is in GTA, Uncharted, Gears of War, Bioshock, etc. Both games feature a handful of fighting sequences, and they are justified in a narrative context. Why is that somehow dated now, or bad? Just because the graphics are bad or the voice actors suck? Those are surface aesthetics, and they are irrelevant to whether the core game design is good or not."

Re: Ren, killed by Ryo's hands?

well done for matching the statue with the one from akira/pai's stage in virtua fighter 2. does anyone know what it is? seems that it must be quite a significant object to depict it.
Apparently, that's the Iron Lion Statue in Cangzhou.

http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af167/Kiyuu/DSC03915.jpg

I found this image in the website of Tetsuya Hattori, the martial-art actor/advisor of Shenmue.
This picture was taken with his Bajiquan master Wu Lianzhi when he visited Meng Cun.

You can learn more about the statue from the Wiki page here:

Shenmue IIx in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround

I wanted to ask how many of you have played the Xbox version of Shenmue II in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround and what your impressions are.

I recently expanded my stereo system to 5.1 with a modern (but few years old) AVR and gave Shenmue IIx a try.
I always wanted to hear how it sounds in surround, finally made the jump after years of thinking about it.

I have played the beginning until you get the bag back and then all of the Yellow Head Building.
I have to say that I'm rather dissapointed, Shenmue IIx has pretty lame surround mixing. The surround speakers do add a bit of "room" in areas like the sewer under Kowloon, where there's a lot of reverb, you know.
They rarely give off discrete sound effects though. In the intro you can hear the pidgeons fly past the camera but that's a rare example.

The center speaker is pretty much never used at all. The entire front field is produced by the stereo speakers. Combined with the weak surround speaker output it really doesn't give much more impression then stereo.

The only time the game produces real 5.1 sound is during the rooftop cinematics. The voices are of much higher quality then anywhere else in the game and they actually come from the center speaker. You can hear the chopper behind you, the music coming from the front and then you hear Dou Niu to your right, where he's holding Wong.
After the fight, when the chopper flys over you, the subwoofer gives a nice punch. Works and sounds quite well but that's only a fraction of the cinematic action in the game. Maybe the final scene with Shenhua will be mixed good aswell but I don't remember it having those exceptional clear voices so I kinda doubt it.

It's really rather sad. There really wasn't much effort or passion put into the surround mixing of Shenmue IIx.
Guess that goes well together with the dub... It's really a shame as the Xbox can do a lot better and Shenmue II definately deserves a nice 5.1 sound in every cutscene.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

That was nice and just what I needed to ease a bit of my frustration. Very intersting to see it played with an instrument like that. Thought it was some kind of shamisen but then it's actually a phillipine instrument.
Sounds kinda similar though.

Anyway, why am I frustrated? I'm trying to win the grand prize at the Abe Store again, for my videos.
But moreso because it's pretty much the only thing in Shenmue that I've never done. I must get that damn prize!

So I've been trying this on Demul. I use my 10 winning cans in a row and then I reload and do it again.
The results are definately different each time and I've won the 1st prize three times already.
But the grand prize... I've drawn more then 650 raffle tickets with that method and it's just not happening!
I've even tried to increase the chances by trying this on christmas eve for the last couple rounds but that doesn't really seem to do anything at all.

That old lady is evil. She's cheating. The Gold Dural is a lie! I can't believe I've still never won it after so many tries.
I know the chances are only 1/400 but it must happen at some point, right? I will continue but I'd really need some "soul support" from you guys, just so I don't go insane over this.

Re: david deville Interview with Yu suzuki

Why don't you try and get an exclusive with Kotaku or Eurogamer? I know Eurogamer love Shenmue and always respond to emails and such. At least this way it will get MASSIVE exposure.

Re: david deville Interview with Yu suzuki

Hi guys, i have some news, a good one and a bad one.

Before arranging the interview, i contacted a french magazine to see if they could let me write it down and publish it. I did not get any news until today. I got a phone call and they said that if i wanted to get it published, i'd have to share it as a temporary exclusivity. I've asked them how long and they said atleast one month. Since the magazine will be available on october, i'd have to wait until november to post something on the net.

Now i am a bit lost on what to do. As a magazine, Shenmue could get more views and might attract more than just a plain copy paste on internet (which would still happen on november anyway), so that wouldn't change anything.

If i do accept, would it be okay or would you be all angry ? I know that i was supposed to share it with you soon, but if i can get another chance to publish it somewhere else, that'd be great. And just to make it clear, even if they publish it, i am not paid, so there is no money involved.

Re: david deville Interview with Yu suzuki

It depends on the contents of the interview. If it consists of mostly Shenmue related questions it's better suited that a fan site like Shenmue Master cover it. If it's mixed with general questions about his career including other games he's made then a gaming magazine is the ideal choice.

Well here you have a collection of NPC responses, nearly 80 in total. This was recorded from an NTSC Xbox via component in 480p and it's actually my first English Shenmue II video.

Shenmue II Cutscene Comparison (DC, Xbox, Demul, Xbox 360)

I decided to make another thread dedicated to one of my videos as it's my 50th and something truly unique.

I recorded footage from Dreamcast, Xbox, Demul and Xbox 360 at native resolution, removed the black bars and put everything at original size in one HD video. A side by side by side by side comparison. Happy eyeball training!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ujCPPNLc-5o

By the way this was my most time consuming and complicated video yet. I obviously had to play the first disc of the game four times, keeping an eye on the time so everything was under the same light. I had to make a few little adjustments where the Dreamcast version was going far out of sync because of slowdowns or longer load times. Minor differences were left intact. The rest of the editing was also on a larger scale then usual and the limits of the software I use really showed here regarding it's preview image and video performance.

Re: BlueMue's Shenmue videos

I'm on a roll here...... Today I've got three new videos, all about nightfalls.

http://youtu.be/3IOiyNYWqis

http://youtu.be/v1laFdRH7TA

http://youtu.be/e5__PiaV8Ww

The one from Shenmue was a really easy job thanks to the Debug Beta and the ability to speed up the time.
One of my saves is on December 24th and so I was able to easily get snow. So I made a snowy edition aswell.

The one from Shenmue II took a lot more time. There are a lot more areas then I thought, there are 27 different nightfall scene! I recorded these from the Xbox version because I felt that the bloom enhances the mood.

Re: BlueMue's Shenmue videos

I can finally present the video where the fortune teller falls in love with Ryo. In both English and Japanese right away!

http://youtu.be/W3xg4ylJ8k0

http://youtu.be/yXwckSyJj0Q

This took longer then I thought. These special readings are completely random and I struggled to get the last one. After dozends of tries I loaded up a save file in Kowloon just to see what happens and I immediately got the missing one. Same thing on the Xbox. I just played until I was able to visit her in Kowloon and got it first try.
So I guess she only tells you this one in Kowloon.

Re: Shenmue Undub [Japanese Speech Mod] [CD-R 80/99]

Kogami, what if you merged your version with mine?

Use the optimized sort order/cdda lba etc., coca-cola texture swaps, all of the cinematic .afs files, then use the free speech .afs files from your version.

With the downsampled free speech files it should fit 80min cd-r's.
If not I have downsampled free speech jp files also depending on what sample rate you went with.

As for the re-linking of files for conserving space I will message someone for the app if possible.
From what I remember it is a linux app.
I don't think the mkisofs paramater 'duplicates-once' is sufficient..

If anything a collaboration for remaking an optimized version would be good.
There is still the issue with the disk that has the ryo motorbike scene that plays that damn intro am2 cdda part before the music on the revive dc release lol. (this is why that disk should only use 2 cdda and not all 3)
Also I think the ending is missing the speech?? I don't remember.

*Also I will look into whether or not I can upload some dc tools in the near future for shenmue dojo.

Let me know.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

I've noticed something interesting with the Man Mo signs that hang on the fence right across the building.
When you're inside the Yan Tin Appartments the game loads different textures for them. You can see them through the door but I managed to get a closer look after glitching out of the building.

http://fs1.directupload.net/images/150131/xrd43k63.jpg

Normally the small sign on the bottom right is so deteriorated that you can only read the first half. But here it's fully visible. I always assumed that it was a sign for Man Mo Temple, as you can just about make out the T, but it's actually for a travel agency. Now this Man Mon Travel Co. is obviously nowhere to be found and that made me think.

Maybe they intended to have this building somewhere but then they had to cut it? You know that empty alley in the South Carmain Qr. that has absolutely nothing of interest? Maybe it would've been put there.

Do you find Shenmue comforting?

Sorry if a thread like this already exists (didn't bother searching anyway :P), but as someone who finds Shenmue to be a very comforting game, I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone else feels the same and if they have any idea why that might be?

No doubt it's very much to do with the quite magical level and sense of immersion that the game has (moreso than 99.99% of games since then, I would argue), but, for me anyway, it feels like home almost; as if the game has somehow managed to tap into a part of my psyche where I feel at one with it, as if it's a part of me. I could play so many other games I consider to be immersive ( Fallout 3 , Skyrim , Dust: An Elysian Tail , the Metal Gear Solid games, etc.), but none come even close to what Shenmue provides. Played it for the first time back in 2000 as a nine year-old; the last time I played it was 2007 or so, and I felt exactly the same way. It's weird, but I wouldn't have it any other way :).

Re: BlueMue's Shenmue videos

Here is my first real Shenmue I mod.

http://youtu.be/sruPJmkLUhU

This kinda mod was the very first idea I had and I kept pushing it aside for other projects as it just didn't work. Shenmue really gave me the hardest time and always found a way to ruin my plans. Now I finally got something done. It's not entirely what I wanted but the outcome is still quite funny and well... really stupid.

And here's another video that I uploaded a few days ago.
It shows the extra cutscenes with Shozo Mizuki, when you fail to sneak into the old warehouse #8.
