Re: New Yu Suzuki's project

I would say while it is not confirmed I want to provide a theory (following my previous post ) just for the thinking procedure that is being caused by it, but it is confirmed, therefore let us sum up what we already know, so as we will end up with a somehow close answer about what is that game Yu Suzuki is working on right now.

A while back, when Yu Suzuki was in Monaco, «Yu-san took a tour of Côte d'Azur on March 1st».

There, he met with «Go Nagai, a famous animator, and the tour guide».

http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af167/Kiyuu/Monaco2013_2.jpg

And what he wanted to do there...

As he wanted to stroll some old village with an ambience that would be suitable for a game , the guide took him to Dolceacqua . He liked the village very much and took a lot of pictures.

Some day , we might stroll an old village like this in some video game . ;-)

http://i1004.photobucket.com/albums/af167/Kiyuu/Dolceacqua38_-_Panorama_del_paese_vecchio.jpg (Text highlighting is mine)

This is all «according to the following facebook page in Japanese». I have put a comment there, where I ask if «this is the place were Yu Suzuki's next game is going to be?»

[ Source, by Kiyuu: http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=45589&start=225#p1036674 ]

I'll restate my reaction:
Personally, these are the most inspirational news I have read lately. I automatically-associated them with the fact that Yu Suzuki did research back then for Shenmue and visit places regarding the game , like he (somehow) did now. It may be for something different to Shenmue , but it is good to know that Yu still has the spirit in him.
Source: http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=45589&start=255#p1036847

Ergo! For one, we somehow know where the setting of this game is going to be and somehow what the style of this game is.

— And what you will do with the Shenmue-series now, if you had freedom to do whatever you want?

— Actually, I'm doing it. I took the best that was in Shenmue , all the « know-how » of the game, gave up all that I did not like and make a new project. Only this will be a fantasy setting . That is not China or Japan, but the new fantasy world . * shows the concept art *

http://translate.google.ru/translate?sl=ru&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=ru&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fdarkwren.livejournal.com%2F1506288.html&act=url

Let's see what this says:

- I have heard it before, but I believe this is *not* a spiritual successor to Shenmue. What I mean is, this is not like Mighty No. 9 of Keiji Inafune; that means, you will not see the protagonist of that new game as a similar figure of Ryo Hazuki, with the same attributes et cetera, nor his name will be exempli gratia Ai C No. 3. As Yu Suzuki says, that new game inherits only the «know-how», the formula, while keeping what is best and disregarding what he didn't like. In a few words, the open-world formula (and some other things of Shenmue's gameplay and systems) will be the same, but nor the story nor the characters nor the world, of Shenmue.

- Yu-san says «a fantasy setting ... new fantasy world». The word fantasy prevails. We have already conclude where Yu took inspiration about what this new fantasy world would look like, and this will be like "Dolceacqua". But, by fantasy, you could expect also something futuristic. Or, better, you could expect a world with a setting like e.g. the one that is being used in Pokemon X/Y; that is the world is called Kalos , but Kalos is inspired by / based on Paris, France.

UPDATE: http://youtu.be/9kKVMcRxpqo?t=5m33s
As we can see in this video, we have more serious reasons to consider that this new game project by Yu, would be an RPG . Shenmue wasn't exactly an RPG (as you remember its motto "RPG has changed"), but rather exactly a Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment game; we can even say that new project could be a mix between RPG and FREE.

A few questions to consider:
- What things do you think Yu Suzuki didn't like in Shenmue?
I have a hunch that Quick Timer Events is one thing...
- What do you think about Go Nagai?
I would speculate he will be the one responsible for the concept art of that new game and also providing his expertise on animations. Go Nagai Industries...
- Would Yu consider Kickstarter to fund that new game, like Inafune did, so as it would have the potential to come out on all major consoles?

Furthermore, new things could come out of this new interview of Yu Suzuki, by «russian magazine a "strana igr" and russian version of ign» (source: post )...
The following was taken from a user post at Shenmue500k.

https://scontent-b-dfw.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1425791_615667625159302_1479971978_n.jpg

There is some stuff about some new fantasy rpg fom Yu, he only told that events wont happen in China or Japan, and he`s inspired art stile (desing) from artist Alphonse Mucha, and its far from announcement, and only scenery and music are made yet..

Yeah, its the exclusive interview for russian jornalists for that magazine.

There also was question about Shenmue 3, Yu said nothing new, but but journalists saw a folder named Shemue 3 on his laptops desktop. ...but we would need somehow to translate the interview of that magazine. Someone who can read Russian and willing to do it...

Also, I wonder if this , the «Relation» bit, has anything to do with that new project of his. It is clear that this slide refers to Yu's innovations and things that he have implemented in his games (like e.g. Network with Shenmue Gai, Virtua Fighter Cool Champ), but the Relation is set to 2015, therefore we may see a new innovative system of Yu on that new project and in 2015...

Re: Sony Is Trying To Bring Shenmue To Playstation

Here's another opportunity to amplify the statement we've already made to Sony.

The UK's Official PlayStation Magazine is querying Facebook users on which game or series you want to see on PS4 that hasn't already been announced for the next gen. "Best" answers will appear in issue 92 of the magazine, on sale December 20th. Let's see if we can get Shenmue featured in Sony's own publication and maybe stoke some fires...

http://facebook.com/OfficialPlayStationMagazine/posts/601862933184677
can we please get this as a first page announcement?

Yeah, man! Shenmue Dojo mustn't sleep! Now it's the time to wake up! Now it's the time for Shenmue! Keep the buzz going! :D Vote for Shenmue! Put it in the front page of Shenmue Dojo! Wake up! Do something!

I wish Shenmue Dojo was more active, at least lately with all the Sony <3 Shenmue buzz going on! I would like SD to look like as this page: http://yakuzafan.com/ (or any better similar site). Be active! Keep the ball rolling!

A Facebook "Event" to invite friends to, if you're so inclined: https://facebook.com/events/559144940826274/

Re: Small Tidbit Shenmue News

[...] It's probably just a joke.
It doesn't seem a malicious one. But, in any case, they got a lot of RTs they wanted... Despite that, it's nice to see the buzz around Shenmue III going.

A chat SEGA Nerds held with Imran Yusuf a Stand-Up Comedian and a massive Shenmue fan.

From their Twitter account:
"The hilarious @imranyusuf will be joining the SEGA Nerdcast tomorrow to talk #Shenmue, SEGA and his recent trip to Yokosuka, Japan!"
"We're kicking off the Nerdcast with @imranyusuf to talk Shenmue and more. Come hang with your #SEGA friends:"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShXkI7X4Jwg
If you want to skip to Imran's segments he appears from 0:06:20 to 0:09:05 and from 0:11:20 to 0:34:00.

Imran on his Twitter account:
"Great chat on @SEGANerds, my idea is to introduce Ryo, Lan Di etc as playable characters in the next Virtua Fighter #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense"

He also talked about his experience in the gaming industry where he worked for, his trip to Yokosuka - Japan, his experiences with Shenmue and what he and they love about it and, last but not least, about #GiveYuTheShenmueLicense and how SEGA should approach Shenmue's fate. It's a very interesting and entertaining watch.

Re: Why Shenmue's Future Only Makes Sense on PS4.

That was a mistake to come out and say something like that in front of their fans. His mindset about what business is the gaming industry led him to not double-think what he just said. That or he shares the current motto of the whole industry, something like "if you want to survive, don't listen to your fans, but look at the numbers". Something like SEGA's doing. But that is not a panacea to your business. Even so, it is not a balanced mindset between your fans and the numbers. Sure, he said that they hear them but in the end they look at how much it will cost and how much it will sell, but if you're loosing *loyal* customers, then someday your business' charts will experience a sudden decline. On a second thought, that statement was one of despair; based on how Wii U's sales doing; kind of in an aggressive manner, cold heart logic, but not balanced.

In contrast, PlayStation's team's mindset *seems* completely different. Even before PS4's launch, they managed to bring Borderlands 2; that led them to use that team and *ask* what games *fans* want. Therefore, they first listen to the fans and then logically are looking at the most effective ways to bring what fans want, to "make peoples' pockets happy". Completely different approach from Nintendo's. They even promoting motto's such as "#4ThePlayers", #GreatnessAwaits" et cetera. The only piece missing from PS' idealistic image puzzle, is to act-ually do what fans want, go for the next real step. That, personally as a *fan*, will convince me to follow what they offer about gaming, as long as they keep approaching fans that way.

Now, about Microsoft, their policies are known. Monopolistic, setting the standards on what consumer would want, but without asking them... Absolutely capitalistic mindset, which sets what you have to buy, not what you want to buy, as a consumer. Their DRM and privacy policies, and generally their policies, is something that personally frightened I want to avoid and stay away from...

Re: Why Shenmue's Future Only Makes Sense on PS4.

In a few words, I think the point on why PS4 is the appropriate console for Shenmue (in the basis of considering and comparing the sales and the audience kind, of the three major console manufacturers), may arise from these facts:
⋅  A Xbox console is not the one most of the gamers will go for JRPGs and it is not successful in all regions, that is not successful in Japan.
⋅  Wii U (currently) does not sell well worldwide. (Otherwise, it would be an appropriate one.)
⋅  A PlayStation console is the one a lot of gamers will go for JRPGs and it is successful in all regions, including Japan. Furthermore, as the current reports show, PS4 sells better than the Xbox One (and both of them have the merits to outsold Wii U).

I will say the classic saying that, whatever the console, the game is I care the most. Even if Wii U will take it (if they are really obsessed with finding one game that can sell consoles ), personally I will take it (and I am not indicating here that I like or not like, Wii U).

Epilogically, consider this post .

As for why Shenmue's future makes sense, pardon me but I can not answer that question unbiased, because me and a lot of others Shenmue fans we struggle every so and often, almost every day, to make our voices being heard, to make Shenmue's future bright and make sense (for those who only look at numbers).

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

When I first played the game I never thought that the voice acting was bad. Probably because English is not my native language. I "learned" that from native speakers and such. Lots of people saying that Japanese is superior. But how do they know? Are native speakers and can critisize if it is good or not?

I believe if you are not a native speak (as with my example) you can not really tell the difference. For one, I prefer the English voice acting, because it is more familiar to the ear (at least I can understand English, in contrast with the Japanese one) and why I love it when it brings me smiles (e.g. "I am just fine and dandy! He he he he he!" You don't get that cheesiness in the Jap one...)

Vote for Shenmue 3 in the largest independent Xbox One Mag

X-ONE Magazine held a poll to vote for your top 3 games that Xbox One needs.

ONE OF THE OPTIONS IS *** SHENMUE 3 *** !!!

Therefore... we shall Tornado Kick this poll, as Crazy Shenmue fans we are!!!

!!! LET'S GO ===>>> http://poll.fm/4mzf8 !!!

‪#‎SaveShenmue‬

P.S.: Even though Phil Spencer tweeted that he's not interested, we shall rock this poll anyway! (Read why in the 2nd "spoiler") Do you remember the PSM_OK poll? Then the votes were with comments. NOW, the votes are with checkboxes. THEREFORE, they will not be able to deny any of our votes.

You know what I mean? The votes are obvious and counted by a system and not by a imperfect human being. :P

SO, if we TOP this poll, then it will DEFINITELY appear in their Magazine, *especially* when *themselves* add the "Shenmue 3 option", THEREFORE our "SHENMUE 3" votes are more welcomed than ever!

Just do it! :D I have to mention something for everyone who hesitate:

Our intentions is not where we want Shenmue 3 to end up, but we want to top this poll so as SHENMUE 3 will get more *recognition* and the fanbase alike, something that will advertise the power of our demand.

If Shenmue 3 TOP this poll, then it will *definitelly* appear on their Magazine. (Terry's Invitation to Hell, it's 5 secs job to vote anyway...)

Re: Vote for Shenmue 3 in the largest independent Xbox One M

Ugh... is this what we've been reduced to?
What do you mean? Is there something else we can do? If by winning that poll Shenmue 3's votes appear in the magazine, then it is one more bean in the sack of Shenmue's fanbase spread of awareness. It may not something big, but it is something, it is cumulative.

The more frequently the fanbase's power appears to anything that has a wide public view, the more will be in the spot. It may not prove at the end a force for a contract with a console manufacturer, but it is a try [a try with a procedure of 2 clicks (out of hunderds we do everyday...), of ten secs out of 86400 day's secs, and with below zero calories fat burning...]

Re: Vote for Shenmue 3 in the largest independent Xbox One M

Some things are best to just let go. The community's gonna get a reputation for bombarding any and all polls. If it's saved for ones with actual significance then it'll mean more. It'll make an actual statement. Otherwise, peeps'll eventually clock on and realise that Shenmue will insta-win pretty much everything, leading to eye rolls, sighs, and fanboy rage.
Any examples of similar situations / indicated consequences with/from games/fanbases? By the way, those "peeps" are free to call their own communities for action, and if their communities are more dedicated and plethoric than ours, then they have the means and they are free (always by what the competition/poll creator has put as rules and allows) to use them and win.

Remember back in the day when kids magazines had a section where you could send in drawings of your favourite character that appeared in said magazine? How amazing would it be to see yours being published? Now imagine someone got their dad to draw it for them, or they traced it, and yours didn't appear because that one was picked over it. Fair enough if there's a prize involved, good on them for being smart and devious enough to do it. Otherwise though, what's the point?
This is unrelated. You present an example of voting with drawings and some of them will be picked up as the best ones. For one, the selection of the best drawings would be not by the readers who would vote for it and based on percentages, but by the subjective judgement of the magazine's publishers. X-One Mag's poll is about voting from potentially all existent Internet users and it is based on percentages (not on judgement). Furthermore, they have include the "Shenmue 3" option, therefore they are not subdue that and the open chances it to be the winner.

It's like these developers and publishers that've got plenty of money in their pocket to fund their own projects, but take to Kickstarter anyway. They're free to do it, and it's not against the rules, but it's kinda goin against the whole idea of it's existence. This poll is for the X-One community. Their readers. Do you buy it? Are you a part of their community? Or are you just gate-crashing it because you wanna spread the word of Shenmue?
Again I don't see any one-on-one connection of the example with the current case. You say it is only for their readers. It is not and here is why: 1) the poll is open to the public view [they even tweeted publicly about it (their Twitter account is public and they don't protect their Tweets )] where all existent Internet users are welcomed to vote, 2) if it was only for their readers, then they would have put that poll via a system that would require for them to give credentials that would prove they are readers of the magazine and then they are allowed to vote, 3) they didn't suggest not to, exclude or prevent any endeavour to call your community for action to vote for the game which is relevant to the community's nature. Epilogically, no one is gate-crashing everything, because individual Internet users have the right to vote or not vote, for whatever reason or game.

I've said in the past, instead of pissing off other communities, efforts should be made to help them instead. A gang of thieves terrorising villages makes them no friends, but a group of heroes protecting the villages or helping them out may gain one or two new recruits.
This is what we do, we help them. How? By advertising their poll, we advertise them, their website, their magazine. Some people wouldn't have known that this magazine/website exists (myself included) without becoming interested to participate in that poll which is relevant to their subject game of interest, that is Shenmue. Furthermore, that kind of advertising, call for participation in that magazine's open to the public poll, would potentially and increase the possibilities to raise the magazine's website's traffic (with everything this implies). Even so, some may become interested in their magazine and be one of their subscribers.

By the reasons explained above (both two paragraphs), we are not by any means of any kind terrorists.

The aim should be to expand the community. Growth. If the name "Shenmue" appears everywhere, leaving negative opinions in it's wake, then how exactly is that helping? Just think about it for a second. Aggressive tactics aren't always the way to go.
The name "Shenmue", or "Shenmue 3" to be correct, has already appeared in that poll by its creators themselves. The possibility the name "Shenmue 3" to appear alongside with a high percentages of votes, does not by any reasoning imply that it will leave a negative opinion by default. It would be just a name with a percentages of votes. Opinions are being crafted in people's minds by their holders, and given the circumstances of the poll, it does not indicate any meaning of negativity projected towards the public eye.

Even so, the means used to encourage fans to vote for the game which are fan of, any kind of them are not prohibited by the poll creators (as also explained above).

But hey, this is your "baby", so why pay attention to any constructive criticism? It's not like it could lead to any form of improvement...
This is semi-irrelevant to the subject of the poll, but here's my take on that:
Construct means to build up. Criticize means to tear down. If you want to praise, get after. If you want to criticize, get after. You cannot build up and tear down at the same time.

Re: New Yu Suzuki Interview (Shenmue 3, Kickstarter ?)

http://www.gofundme.com/7pd1t0

Fan funding made by Shenmue500k Admin.
This is not by a Shenmue500k admin (I think/hope...). In any case, this is illegal. The owner of this said he will take it down.

Furthermore: Important note to all Shenmue fans:

Please do not launch, support, or encourage any crowdfunding or pledging initiative that has not been officially authorized/endorsed by Sega or Yu Suzuki.

Avoiding this route is fundamental to the success of any genuine Kickstarter-like campaign in the future, despite the allure of wanting to prove there's a demand right now. This will only undermine that demand by presenting lower numbers than a legitimate campaign would raise, and the lack of results will weaken enthusiasm for any legit fundraiser by way of the "once bitten, twice shy" effect.

This concept has been explored many times, and it's for very good reason that it hasn't been done before now. It's not that no one has thought of it, it's that sense has always prevailed before any damage could be done. So please be sensible and discourage any rash activities borne out of frustration.

Thank you.

Re: Shenmue 2 'Post Mortem'?

At the end of the main presentation, a slide showed 2000 as the date Shenmue II development began, followed by the words, "To be continued..." This led many viewers to assume or speculate that a second postmortem would cover Shenmue II in more detail, but GDC management has denied such plans ( http://tinyurl.com/gdcnope ). Instead we believe it was just a nod to the way the first game ended, with Ryo's departure from Yokosuka. This attempted symmetry between Shenmue the game and Shenmue the presentation is certainly more likely than the cruel parody of Shenmue II's cliffhanger interpreted by viewers less familiar with Yu's nature. This is a man whose eyes filled with tears reminiscing about the game. He ain't no troll.

Re: Jeff Gerstmann's Shenmue Rant (PAX East 2014)

Liked that comment:
http://www.giantbomb.com/shenmue/3025-602/forums/i-like-shenmue-what-about-you-1480631/?page=1#js-message-7302374 "I love Shenmue but I also identify that it's not for everybody. Infact, it's probably not even for most people.

Shenmue is a game that had the balls to be boring on purpose. It's about waiting around outside of the barbershop because it's 6am and they aren't open yet. In some ways its reminiscent of a storytelling method Alfred Hitchcock used; Hitchcock subscribed to the notion that you start out very slowly on purpose, because that way the viewer gets to see how mundane the characters really are. Through that mundanity, you relate to them, because life itself is boring.

And Shenmue starts out VERY mundane. And I really, really love that, because it backs it up with a hard-to-match sense of place. Exploring that little sliver of 1985 Japan is super cool to me, and the things that game was trying to do at the time were revolutionary. Every NPC in that game is unique, and they all have daily routines. Games can do that now through character creators and whatnot, but somebody in Shenmue had to paint textures for 25-50+ unique faces and chart out where they were going to be in the city at any given moment.

Of course, in a gaming landscape where everything is still loud, in your face, and convenient to the point of holding your hand, it's easy to see why somebody would hate the game. It's not even that Shenmue is difficult, either, it's just tedious... but it's intentionally tedious. It forces you to stop and smell the flowers. I can dig that. Most people won't."

Posted a comment there, too: http://www.giantbomb.com/shenmue/3025-602/forums/i-like-shenmue-what-about-you-1480631/?page=1#js-message-7302709

Praise the Gong, with Ryo Hazuki the Gong Master:

Shenmue is an experience for your eyes to see, with messages for your mind to think, and emotions for your soul to feel.
Main difference among almost every other open world game & Shenmue:
in first ones you *destroy* their worlds, in #Shenmue you're LIVING them

Re: Yu Suzuki revisits Shenmue at GDC 2014 (Postmortem)

The Shenmue Postmortem by Yu Suzuki on GDC 2014, is now* available on the GDC Vault!

http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1020805/Classic-Game-Postmortem

I think, it's the best version you can get out there to watch the postmortem. It shows, at the same time and separately, both the slides and Yu suzuki.

*You had to pay before (be a member), now it is free.
