Re: What Anime are you watching right now?

^^Trigun starts out good (first five episodes or so), but quickly devolves into crappy animation and major inconsistencies in tone. I'm so torn on the series, since I love those first few episodes to death, but was about as disappointed as can be with the rest of it.

Re: Anniversary - Broadway Tickets or Concert Tix

I went to see Jersey Boys, the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons here and loved it. My mom said its the best one she has seen and she has been to a few, I believe she saw The Lion King and Wicked too, don't remember what else. Was my first broadway.

The thing about that though is its also pretty much a cover band since they sing all the popular songs and then some plus they look a lot like the original guys. So they are actors that can also sing very well.

wow. GSP vs. Condit and Johnnie Hendricks vs. Kampmann, and not a single post for months on this site. I guess the men have left... smh

Just got back from the local wings joint and I'm loaded up pretty good. Feeling like a proud Canadian right now. GSP dominates yet again. This guy is not only masterful, but an ambassador to the sport. The Silva fight next year will be off the charts.

Re: Review The Last Game You Beat

http://thetrendguys.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/The-Walking-Dead-Video-Game.jpg
Mario 64, Final Fantasy VII, Goldeneye and Halo are just some of the games that left a mark on the industry and will be remembered for what they brought to gaming. In 10 years time it’s very likely that we will be talking about The Walking Dead in a similar fashion. The game is very flawed in certain aspects but what it does well it does better than any game has done before it.

The game opens with your character Lee sat in the back of a police car on his way to prison for murder. From here you’re just given some time to learn the controls and the conversation system. From just this first conversation you’re able to see that what you do and say will effect what happens in the future. It doesn’t take long for the ride along to get interrupted by the zombie apocalypse and you’re thrown into the action.

http://guides.gamepressure.com/thewalkingdead/gfx/gallery/large/Screenshots/twd2.jpg
Hi I'm Johnny Knoxville and this is getting bitten by a zombie

Gameplay is the weakest part of The Walking Dead and it seems that Telltale realised this after the first episode. They tried to add puzzles like they have done in their past games such as Back to the Future and Sam & Max, Telltale which is made up mainly of old Lucasarts employees have always tried to stay true to their adventure game roots. Sadly when you’re stuck in a room surrounded by zombies looking for a key to a door or batteries for a radio it feels rather tedious rather than rewarding and takes away the tension of split second thinking that a game like this should have.

The good thing is that Telltale saw this fault and soon switched their focus onto the selling part of the series. The Walking Dead which before being a game has been a very big series in both print and TV form has always been about the characters. The zombies are just part of the environment and their only purpose is to help you realise that there is no relaxing. With it being a time where many complaints are thrown at developers for there being to many zombie games it’s refreshing. By the end of The Walking Dead you won’t feel like you have just simply played another zombie game but more a game about life and relationships.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Walking-Dead-Ep-4.jpg
Hardly One Direction but they will do

The game essentially plays out like a 10-12 hour version of the Normandy sections of Mass Effect 2 where you would just interact with your crew which was arguably one of the best parts of the game. In a time where there is no TV to occupy your time and all you have is the company of others who are helping you get by you will want to learn as much as you can about them. Just like people in real life they will leave a first impression which will very much shape how you treat them. Depending on how you respond to questions you’re asked you will shape how the other characters view Lee. It doesn’t take long for you to pick your favourites in the group and start deciding who you will save over the other should the situation arise.

This is where the game excels. You aren’t meant to like everyone but you come to appreciate them as a character in the story. One of the reasons for the excellent story telling is that Telltale handed the script writing duties over to Gary Whitta who wrote the film The Book of Eli. In years to come The Walking Dead will be remembered for being the game that pushed the fact that brilliant script writing is an important factor for some games and shouldn’t just be handed to anyone.

Since a lot of thought went into how the game plays out no one will feel like they have got a ‘bad ending’ but more your own. You will be faced with some very very tough decisions that will shape how your game will play out. These happen as soon as 30 minutes into the game. None of the choices have a wrong or right answer and are just simply down to what you personally feel is best morally or what you feel is the best method to aid your survival.

http://www.bennylingbling.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/WalkingDead101-2012-09-10-18-18-08-73.jpg
No talking to strangers doesn't apply in an apocalypse

One thing will be the biggest decider in most of your decision making and that is a young girl named Clementine. You find Clementine alone in a tree house with no adult in sight and you take in upon yourself to look after her. It’s very easy for a child character in any TV series or game to become nothing more than an annoyance but this is handled brilliantly. The way us humans bond with children is by being a teacher to them which is what you become to Clementine, just like any child in real life Clem needs to be taught how and why to do things. Over time you build a strong relationship with her which does become the biggest decider of your decisions. I found myself choosing to do stuff that wouldn’t benefit my character but what would benefit her the most. By the end of the game you will feel you have had an effect on this character like you would on a child in real life. For these reasons Clementine will always been in the argument when it comes to best NPC in a video game.

The Walking Dead ends up being a game that has some big flaws which are massively overshadowed by the fantastic parts of the game. Even those that aren’t blown away by the game will be able to admit the impact the game will have on storytelling in the future for videogames. This is a game that rightfully deserves to be in conversations for a 2012 game of the year award but I will personally be placing it high on my top games of all time.

Re: Gaming thoughts of the day

It's not being chauvinist per say, but I think most of us would be more excited if it were a hero. I love heroines and have played their games, but a game like Shenmue is one that a male wants to bond with to a certain degree and you won't be able to fully do that with this game unless you're gay.

Speak for yourself. [-X

But seriously, A lot of people rage on Mass Effect but one thing I think they got right was giving you a protanginist like Sheperd that is really just an extension of yourself. You could be male shepherd or femshep, your shepherd could be straight or gay or bi if you chose. The games character was practically a blank slate for you to inscribe upon as you saw fit.

Re: "MMA" Martial Arts Offcial topic

^ I hope your joking about inter gender matches. A real mma fight between a man and woman who both diligently train in the sport? You should know the answer to that without giving it a second thought. Dana made a similar comment during one of his media press interviews. I can understand it coming from him since he's a promoter. I agree Ronda can armbar most men and women in grappling. Unless your name is Mousasi.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9xjs2fWJEs

The way I see Ronda now in her division is similar to Royce Gracie early on in his career in the UFC. None of the current lot of female fighters can handle what Rousey brings to the table each fight. It will take time to figure her out just like with Royce, the end result could very well help change how females fight in mma.

Re: Random Thoughts! v2.0

This place is boring now plain and simple. It's not hard to notice people not posting as much as they used to. I still pop on a lot but just don't see the point in posting nowadays. Every topic get's filled with stupid GIFs or youtube videos and no discussion is actually had. As for the gaming forums unless you like Ys you are pretty much looked down on and I know many people avoid it because of that as well as the constant whining about how the games industry is shit. I've spoken to people who post here about games like Halo who refuse to do it on the boards as they will simply get their thread ruined or people interrogating them.

I'm in the same boat as Pete and I'll believe there is a change when I see it. Ryudo apologizes every 6 months and says his changed only for him to carry on doing the same shit. The only thing his done different recently is mention that his changed every 10 posts. When he claimed that TEEPO always apologized and ended up doing what he normally does I almost went back and posted all the topics where Ryudo apologized for his behavior over the years. I almost found about 10 of the bloody things. Saying sorry and posting a Lion King video is all well and good but people don't give a fuck about that and would actually prefer a change in your tone and attitude.

I've always been wait and see on when you've claimed to have 'changed' only for you to do the same shit. Just realize you don't have to post in every thread and give your opinion on the same topic for the 20th time just because the last time you did it was in the same topic 2 pages back or if you have no opinion post a GIF. It get's depressing coming onto this place and seeing 10 topics saying you was the last person to post in them all even when it's for topics I can tell you don't care for.

Everyone remembers when Ryudo got demodded and this place had plenty of people coming back. Every time I logged on there would be tons of posts all from different people. That's what this place could be like.

Re: Your most overlooked system or game

Ah, geez, too many games to mention. I could be here all day.
I'll just start with Ranger X. Feels, to me, just about as triple-A as a 16-bit action game can be, but it's generally forgotten these days. Some of the best graphics on the Genesis/Megadrive, with one of the most intuitive control schemes for a sidescrolling action game ever. Once you get used to it at least. People tend to complain about the controls at first just because they aren't the same as every other sidescrolling shooter. But give it time, and you realize how brilliant and downright stylish it is.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

Burning Rangers I kept fucking up and at one point said "Fucking game needs analog" Then it hit me this was made in 1998. So I bust out the 3D pad and was much better. Fairly challenging game but it makes it harder when everyone is talking in Japanese so I have to figure it all out on my own. Granted the dark hallway first area got stuck and lost a few times the gauge hit 99%. Game is addicting as hell. Not beaten it yet as I am still struggling where to go for the language barrier but that's ok really. Adds more challenge and while frustrating at times. You figure it out.

I'm actually impressed visually for the era this was really good looking. I might be wrong but don't remember PSone handling very fast paced games with lot's going on the screen at once while moving pretty smooth. Saturn was an untapped beast and think the only game that showed it's true potential went to be a Dreamcast game we all love. Great game and would love for Sega to come back to this. Even tho Sonic Team made two great Sonic games in Colors and Generations be awesome to see them try and make a new IPl like the Saturn era with NiGHTS and Burning Rangers.

Re: What are you currently playing?

Had a day off today, so I spent almost all of my time playing games.
Finally finished Tales of Destiny. Easy game, that one. Really endearing in a sort of SNES/PS1 combo kind of way though. Enjoyed it a helluva lot. Not life-changing, but still worth playing through.
And, almost immediately after that, I started in on Tales of Vesperia. Already about six hours in. I haven't engaged in long stretches of gaming like this in a while, but it felt really good, especially with such a light, inoppressive game as Vesperia. Just a really enjoyable ride so far, and it's great going immediately from a 2D Tales game into one of the newer 3D iterations and seeing just how far the series has come.

And they seem surprised at the Vita's bad numbers at every turn. Can't blame them trying to protect themselves from piracy, especially after it killed the PSP, but they need to strike a balance.
nothing killed the PSP, it did very well it's just sony thought that they games weren't selling enough compared to the amount of PSP sold and thought that if they restricted things from being pirated then they would sell more games. turns out they were wrong and it ended in them selling less PSVitas instead as a lot of people modded their PSPs to play emulators on the go and not the actual PSP games

Oh yeah I remember you mentioning something about trying to keep the relationship going partly just because of your pets. While it's commendable that you were so considerate of the little ones, sometimes you have to be selfish to be selfless. Sometimes it's worse for the pet if it's owners are always fighting each other. It's always the pets that suffer :(

Seriously though man, hope all is well.

I actually got past all that. Was just a phase I was going through. Ironically, she ended up going through the exact same thing but didn't wanna stick it out. Fucked me off the day before our anniversary. I left without half of my shit, but in a moment of madness I stole back my Xbox when I found out she's shacked up with the cunt she ran to with her problems.

Been living back at my mam's for about a month, barely any space to put my shit coz the ceiling's come through, so every night I sleep to the sound of dripping rain water and have to keep on top of emptying the bucket, slightly struggling with my current job and getting another one just so that I can afford to have a social life to take my mind of shit. Haven't had the slightest bit of happiness since September 2nd, turned into an over-emotional wreck with no one to talk to about it, so allowing myself this moment of weakness.

It's her birthday on Sunday, and I'm trying to concoct ways to get the same powers as this guy:

Man, I never got all that love here. That's f'ed up.

That's because your not Mittenz. Mittz is the type of dude to pull strings to try and get you a job out in Portugal if your living rough, and he might not even know the first thing about Portugal, but he'll still do it. You get mad love from me too though Joka. Your story is the story of the underdog, you used to get mad unreasonable hate for the off kilter threads you would start and stuff (I miss those threads bro, that cat story still makes me well up), but now you just breeze though every now and again and drop calm bombs of knowledge every time. #dojomyths

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

I'm trying to find someone who has played Armored Core: Last Raven. Apparently the developers thought it would be amusing to give no sound directions in a game that should require a Master's Degree.

I'm a huge AC fan, but I haven't played through all of the games yet.
Even so, I have heard that Last Raven, in particular, is hard as fuck if you don't have an AC already built and ready to transfer over from the earlier games (AC3, Silent Line, Nexus, or Nine Breaker), so don't feel too bad if it's proving difficult. It's one of those where the devs expect that you've played everything before. Armored Core is funny like that.

Re: What Happened to Art? (Not just about Art)

You're just getting older and interpreting your not giving a shit about the new generations of stuff as meaning its not good or doesn't have merit. It happens almost everyone.

Believe it or not the shit from when we were teenagers was just as crappy and the people were just as dumb as they are now. Everything just seemed more fun and interesting because it was new and let's face it, we were dumb. Same goes for the previous generations.

A lot of us are born when our parents are in the type of mindset you seem to be in. Angry about the "current state" of the world of art, they tell tall tales of the good old days and hype up the era they grew up in to a mythological status at a time when your mind is most vulnerable to that kind of malarkey. Then the grandparents jump in and tell you your parents are wrong and what youth should really be like.

I'm not saying we shouldn't respect the past. I love the past, all of my life took place there. I just want everyone one to realize that we're looking at it from Inception-like layers of nostalgia. Starting with the haze of newness and nostalgia for your own youth and then adding another layer of thick illogical fondness for every generation of nostalgic ancestors relating the stories of their generation to wide eyed descendants before us.

It has created an over emphasis on past triumphs and a weird deification of any person or thing from a previous era.
Great things are accomplished during every generation. Its just this weird nostalgia-ception thing we call history that tries to make us think only great things happened during the time of our predecessors. And that our achievements are somehow not as great. Ok now I'm really rambling. What I meant to say was:

No matter what anyone tells you, whatever time it is right now is the very best time to be alive.

I understand your point and it's true that nostalgia can make people talk about the "good old days". Texts from ancient Rome/Greece already talked about dumb, younger generations.

On the other hand, I've read about a measured decline in intelligence worldwide that has been documented for quite a while. As one of the researchers said : why should we expect things to always go forward? Even progress can slow down or even reverse temporarily. Looking at schools they could see a huge difference in level/results and it seems to have slowly declined for a long time with a faster pace around 2000.
This can be extended to art. Researchers compared current pop with older and noticed that the new one literally contained less music and compositional sofistication compared to the 80'ies and earlier. Over here the radio still plays 60'ies to 80'ies songs. Less from the 90'ies and almost never stuff from 2000 and later (except current hits of course).

There are several papers detailing possible causes. Society being too nice so crap art is as valid as a masterpiece. Laziness. Globalization/capitalism (looking for infinite profit) dumbing down. Internet facilitating the spread of dumb ideas faster than ever. Or several controversial studies about "the dumb outbreeding the smart". Modern society leads to educated women having less children, while less educated in general often have more kids and can do so with support from the state.

I think it's laziness plus science/art budgets getting smaller. People marvel at a new smartphone update but just check how fast humanity went from the first flight to standing on the moon. As Neil Degrasse Tyson said : back then people dreamt about the frontier.

By the way, the last possible cause seemed to be quite controversial :P

Edit : Administration/business types infiltrating music, art, games and science have made these fields more corporate-like than before. This leads to less risk which results in mainstream work. Science needs to produce fast results (it doesn't work like that) or it doesn't get funded. The same for music and games where marketing often wins over art etc.

Re: What Happened to Art? (Not just about Art)

I don't think I agree with Marsalis' theory exactly. Although I'm not entirely sure what it is, although, like him I come from a classical background

Maybe to him a music hater was a bit harsh, but he's an uber-traditionalist, he was a vocal critic of Miles Davis more experimental latter day work, and he completely dismisses hip hop altogether. I do actually love his love for old music, but the man got trapped in the past.

When we look at rap, I laugh at the thought that it's going someplace. I've been in that industry and watched the fall. The 1 or 2 actual great artists out today aren't from today. You can cling to Kendrick Lamar as some new savior, but the truth is the only thing they lyrics today contain is vulgarity and basic word play. To even compare the content to the standard of the 90's is crazy flat out.

All this talk of the "fall" of rap is exactly the kind of hyperbole I think is total nonsense. For example there's some old conspiracy theory I read a while back that goes along lines of "In 1990 a group of country's most powerful music execs had a large meeting, and decided on a vision for the future in which they all bought stocks in private prisons while simultaneously pushing Gangsta rap to the forefront of popular culture, thus more young black men than ever will get sent to the private prisons and they're profits would be through the roof, while rap turned to vulgar shit". This is unlikely to have ever happened (at least that way), but what I'm trying to show you, is that for a previous generation rap had already "fallen" in the 90s that you laud as the peak of rap. Your no different from those guys. I'm not exactly keen on the majority of current mainstream stuff either, but guys like this make music I find exciting http://mellomusicgroup.bandcamp.com/album/niggas-is-men

Maybe not as prefect on a technical level as your KRS 1s or BDKs in their primes, but then, that's already been done, you can't get any better on that level, why not try something new, and more impressionistic? That's what many of these new cats seem to be doing. And if you do want that 90s style boom bap with a new flavour, there's still good new stuff on that tip out there too, such as people like Rac Marci, Action Bronson, Ka, even Danny Brown, and of course Joey Bada$$. So really, right now there is something out there to please everyone, basically.

the industry today tends to kill it- in the name of progress.

Stop looking towards the "industry" then. Look in more left-field sources, and you'll find plenty of what you want.

Re: Review The Last Game You Beat

Planescape Torment // Black isle Studios // 1999

7/10

"A very well written game, spooling with creativity marred by rather dour combat gameplay"

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/Matrix5904/ps_arm1.png [/url]

Many gamers regard this as one of the best games ever made and to be fair I can understand why: the setting, ambience, writing and original soundtrack all hit the mark but it is the crude representation of the D&D ruleset which hinders this game from being truly special.

Even the companions, whilst initially very interesting devolve into typical fantasy blather as the game progresses. It really is quite bizarre! Each character is given a great premise or high concept but then nothing ever comes of it, they are characters by way of the back of a very creative cereal box, scissored into the game with charm but little substance.

But don't let that dissuade you as this is one of the most creative games ever made, we see street performing mimes doing their stuck-in-the-box routine -- except here, they are actually stuck in an invisible box set by a facetiously bored mage. Or a stolen head that you find in a box who wishes to be taken back to his body! You can really tell the developers had a good time in envisioning this world. And it is a world, so vivid in its conception that you could perhaps even envision it as an actual extension of our own. It's multi-verse setting encouraging the imagination that Earth could be but one faint strand of its entourage.

Overall, this is a game which regularly touches upon greatness but it is it's baseline game play and mechanics which have either aged rather badly, or indeed weren't very great to begin with...

Tis a shame, but in a game successfully meditating upon themes of identity, memories and mortality, I can proffer that this is a game worth playing before we ourselves face our mortality... Tooth, arm and nail.

Re: Random Thoughts

I've only just thought about it, but it's kind of strange that I can really like an actor and think they're amazing in their job, but not be all that enthusiastic about their movies.
I'm just thinking about that because I just watched the 1995 movie French Kiss. It's just your average Meg Ryan romantic comedy drivel; enough to crack a smile here and there, but overall nothing that could even qualify as "good." Despite that, I think Kevin Kline is fucking excellent in it. I think Kevin Kline is fucking excellent in just about everything I've seen him in. And yet... I don't actually like most of the movies he's made.
Weird.

Re: Review The Last Game You Beat

Deadfall Adventures.

It's incredibly cheesy. And there are some minor annoyances with the checkpoint system. But overall I really enjoyed my time with it. Great puzzles/level design, and fun multiplayer. My video review:

Re: CD Creation Question

If you want to include data and audio on the same disc look into mixed mode CDs or "enhanced" CDs. I don't have much experience with them so i can't tell you a lot beyond that.

edit: did a quick google search and got this tut

http://forums.support.roxio.com/topic/70869-creating-mixed-mode-cd-data-and-audio-files/

These guys say "enhanced" is the way you wanna go, but I don't know. Do a bit of research first. Good luck.
