Re: BLOOD OF JESUS! Every bible to come with a box of donuts

By the way, the nature of the fundamental forces is actually one of the big areas of research in physics. They know that it needs explaining and try to find why constants have their exact value, why symmetry between forces broke down leading to stars and life

Metaphysical thinking brackets every thing as a whole as needing explanation till you get to something that obviously explains itself, so you would have to ask what the forces are, or more precisely, what the ultimate source of all phenomena is, such that there was a state of symmetry between proposed unobservable things that mathematically could have unfolded as the universe we experience. Hence, from this perspective, all such questions in physics are not "explanation," but only "description," falling short of an explanation that totally satisfies Reason.

Moreover, nobody knows what science is, nobody knows what theories are, nobody knows what kind of knowledge relates to reality and what doesn't. No one even knows if there are laws of nature, what can cause what, or what depends on what, or what substance is, or even if we ought to trust anything but our direct experience with all its content and common sense because it's really all we undoubtedly have. There is a popular conception that science is a well-defined thing, but the truth is, nobody knows what scientific methods are effectual and which are not, and there's thousands of mutually exclusive ways of looking at it. The newspapers tell us that science is just the assumption of materialism, but that is no less a metaphysical view than the notion that the whole universe is in the mind. Both rely on models of unobservable phenomena. Nobody even knows whether scientific models are legitimate science in the first place. There has been a silent civil war raging for several decades between those who think science should be the study of all the relationships between directly observable phenomena alone (the orthodox empiricists), and those who think it proper to propose and study models of unobservables like atoms, subatomic realities, space-time, or laws of nature (the pop physicists like Einstein, Feynman, Hawking, etc), and connecting those hypothetical models with mathematics, forming cosmologies (Big Bang, Dark Matter, Black Holes, Quantum Physics...).

But many scientists don't like the idea of using scientific methods on purely mathematical models of unobservable phenomena because they believe that to be metaphysics and not physics at all. Empiricists have long accused the pop physicists of dealing with imaginary things, proving only what would be the case if such and such a model were true, rather than focusing on relationships between directly observable phenomena. And, in truth, technoscience relies only on observable phenomena. So, there is a very real question as to the usefulness of theoretical physics and whether it is even scientific at all, or rather a metaphysical explication of a materialist model supported by mathematical relationships that may have nothing to do with reality, as none of this work (for example, quantum mechanics) uniquely demonstrates anything useful for prediction or the development of new technology. They are very sensitive about this, so they started this memetic pseudo-war against theism to keep the journalists away from the realist/anti-realist scientific crisis. It's all quite fascinating, if you look into it, since the popular confidence in the myth of a "Science" that is a magic method for knowing is almost entirely false, and it's like a big secret that everyone just pretends isn't so. There's too much money, power, and glory involved.

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/scientific-realism/#UndTheDat

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/constructive-empiricism/

The sad fact is, nobody knows anything with certainty. Not even a little bit. There aren't even any degrees of knowledge. Nobody is enlightened at all, and there's not a thing anyone can do about it. It's all just phenomena and faith.

Re: Where did Henry Go?

Just wanted to log in to say thanks for all the kind words, it really means a lot. I won't be coming back for the foreseeable future, but all the well wishes definitely encourage me to do so, in time. And it's okay that people know what happened, my apologies for disappearing like that.. I did realise I would be letting down some people on here, since I promised to do certain things for them (Dorian, Mittens, Ryudo, my apologies, I'll pay you guys back one day, bet on it). Also apologies to my fellow staff members (and Dojo forum members) for bailing out like I have, if I could turn back the clock, I would have contacted you guys and the Dojo with what was going on, I feel bad about it.

I also hope ThyDarkAngel is doing fine himself, he's going through with difficulties himself also. If you're reading this, take care of yourself and all the best. Same goes for any of you going through hard times right now. I wish all the best to all of the members on here [for example: Orange (hope you have the best damn wedding there ever is and ever will be) and Kenny (keep on living the dream)] in the future.

Don't want to make a big deal out of my absence, but seeing all of the posts in here, I felt I had to.

I vote Crimson Ryan or Kenny for mod!

I'll always be on PSN or my Hotmail if any of you guys fancy a chat. Sorry if this comes off as pretentious, I was just rather touched by all the nice messages.
You guys and gals are the best there is. See you around (and maybe again, in the future).
Be well.
Henry out.

Re: Your setup Entertainment center,PC rig

I took this picture of my "gaming rig" the other day, so may as well share here:

http://s12.postimage.org/ogme69fkt/IMG_20121017_00047.jpg

If you look closely you'll see the parcel tape holding the remote together. That's the remote for the TV/VCR combo whose VCR part stopped working years ago, hence the extra standalone VCR sitting under the PS2.

The future is now!

(Naturally I apologize for the Sonic Generations case dragging down the excellence levels in this scene.)

Why does Shenmue remind me of the holidays?

Why does it feel like this game is best played around November/December? I really enjoy playing shenmue with a cup of hot chocolate, Christmas trees and ornaments, while it is cold and preferably snowing outside. I knew this game came out around this time (November), but it can't be the only reason. Something in the game itself makes want to play it around winter season and this includes Shenmue II.

Is it the internal game changing seasons which includes snow and Santa Clause? Nozomi's white sweater?

Perhaps it's me and the game has been deeply engraved in my sub-conscious because I was playing this alot in my youth on the Dreamcast when it first came out during winter.

Anyone else feel this way?

Re: Random Thoughts! v2.0

Damn, what's in Australia that's so badass?

I mean I was planning to go someday but it sounds like i'm missing something here.

I blame the long lasting prominence of Neighbours, and to a lesser extent, Home and Away. It's ruined the minds of generations of British youth...It's basically a deliberate strategy the Australian government employs in order to brain drain Britain and steal our talent. However, what the aussie government never counts on, is that this only accounts for the dregs Britain's population departing ( *cough* Pete and qwerty *cough*), and our government knows this, hence why Neighbours will always be given a place (and usually lot's of places- twice a day during the week, and omnibus on the weekend is what I grew up on) on British TV screens. :P

I'm of course only joshing chaps. I'm just proper green eyed about the fact that your going to be lucky enough to swap these grey and rainy shores for some sandy aussie beaches. Who know's, you may even find the sturdy jawed aussie girl of your dreams while your there too.

The auzzie babe is well part of my plans. Marry her and i wont have to leave!

Re: Shenmue I & II HD Listed in magazine

It's from earlier this year, when the Internet was on the brink of exploding over a vague, non-committal remark from a PR rep whose job it is to make vague, non-committal remarks. You'd have to think that if there was any actual evidence to support this listing, it would have been more widely reported on by now.

That's not to say that Shenmue HD definitely won't happen. Just that this "mud at the wall" magazine snippet is, almost certainly, a red herring.

They must be super picky. I havent finished the game yet but its a solid 9/10 or 4.5/5 for me so far. Gameplay, side missions and everything else extra is imo some of the best parts. Then the main story is just infinitely better then the last two combined imo. Ya he's no Ezio, but thats like saying theirs no rocket straped to your jet pack.

Re: Nintendo and Sega discussing the future of Shenmue ?

Wow, guys... Just seen this exciting news on the reddit....
please be true. I'll buy a console for this...

http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/12k09o/nintendo_discussing_the_future_of_shenmue_with/

http://i.imgur.com/xllaI.jpg

Do you think there's a chance?
First of all, the image up there is not taken from any magazine, I'm afraid. Obviously, the Japanese there could not be written by any native speaker of Japanese, or rather, could be written by a machine translator, most likely. Still, it's possible to have been reproduced by someone who was trying kindly to convey the "news" to the fans worldwide.

So, I went out to check the magazine to find out if it really is the reproduction of an article from Brutus. But, unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any article on Shenmue, nor Nintendo, in the current issue of Brutus which was released on Nov. 1st. It could be from a backnumber, but, oh well... :dunno:

Re: XBox mag: Why Shenmue III is a bad idea

It always frustrates me when people say Shenmue III shouldn't be made in case it doesn't live up to the originals. I mean, Christ. Are these same people afraid to cross the road? We'd never get anything done if we just played it safe to preserve the unchallenged and unproven image of how it "could" have gone in our minds. Shenmue itself would never have been made, for a start. Yu Suzuki would be talking about this epic open world adventure that "would" have captured the imaginations of gamers around the world, and we'd be saying, "Yeah, sure. Suppose you're going to tell us it would have been better than Crash Bandicoot 17? (Hope they don't make a Crash 18... Leave the memories alone!)"

Re: Nintendo and Sega discussing the future of Shenmue ?

the reddit user "mattew9" was asked what issue this was in and he replied today that it was issue no.741, dated 15/10/12.

Kiyuu looked at a Nov 1st issue, I wonder if that was issue 742, and this is a bi-monthly mag?
Yes, BRUTUS comes out bi-monthly, and it's not really a fashion magazine, though they publish "fashion issue" twice a year. Actually, the one I've checked out was #743 dated Nov. 15, though it hit the shelves on Nov. 1st.

Now, I went back to the book store where they carry some backnumbers as well, and checked out #741 page by page. (It's dated Oct. 15, but actually hit the shelves on Oct. 1st.) The only game name I found in it was "Biohazard 6" in its full-page ad. No Nintendo, no Shenmue, once again...

Or, mattew9/masterG is prolonging this prank even after he's theoretically been busted....there's no way that scan, as Kiyuu pointed out, is completely legitimate, unless it was just an online translation slapped over the real print (which makes no sense).
That's right. It makes no sense at all. If there really is an article in Japanese, how come they bother to translate it into English first and translate it back into Japanese by machine? Did they think no one would notice that is not the original article? :???:

Re: Random Thoughts! v2.0

It was hurricane sandy. Pretty much wiped out parts of New Jersey, Staten and Long Islands, Far Rockaway, a piece of downtown Manhattan (where I live) and started some hardcore fires that took out whole neighborhoods in Queens.

My building is solid so I was ok (though a powerplant nearby had a bunch of conduits that exploded) we lost all out utilities and most of the food in the area was either contaminated or waterlogged (they're still clearing out markets)

it got so bad i had to leave the city for a few days. Everything is up and running but I (and most other people here) can't vote because we're about to be hit with another (much much smaller) storm, the need for food has people hitting up every market that got a shipment today, and the fact that most of the polling sites are closed means theres confusion among districts, misinformation and just too many people at each site.

Still it could be a lot worse, I made a run to Staten Island with some military rations and water to give out and theres parts that got totaled. House burnt down, then swept away by water, then looted, its like escape from New York.

As for work, couldn't get much done to be honest, I'm now finally able to verify my builds and have my vita running TiBC again. Its on track for this summer with an announcement in about march and a playable demo in the spring.

I also started building long terms solutions for development, so once TiBC ep 1 is finished, free DLC and more episodes will come out faster and have more shit in em. (plus it'll make development of other games WAYYYY easier)

Re: Things That Made You Genuinely Happy Today!

I think the thing I'm most glad about this election is that 6 billion dollars later, the chips landed right where they started with. The billionaires with large financial stakes in filling the war cabinets of their favored politicians basically got no return for their efforts. Anything that discourages the elite few to blow a gigantic bank on super pacs in an attempt to have disproportionate influence over politics than everyone else is a good thing in my opinion. If only we could do away with the lobbyists and special interest groups.

Re: Rare Shenmue II DC video?

This makes me the saddest :( The fact that, even if Shenmue was re-booted, it will never get promoted like it did in Japan back in the day. I wonder if all the marketing and promotional costs were included in the $43 million figure.
When Shenmue was under development, it was advertized as a "seven-billion-yen project," and Yu-san translated the amount as "70 million dollars" in this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmXVco0Bkyk
Though I'll never know the exact breakdown, I assume the considerable amount of money was poured into the promotion of the first game. It was really a series of extravagance; having "the Shenmue Premiere" at several locations with free promotional goodies for every attendees, giving away "What's Shenmue VHS," "What's Shenmue demo disc" for SEGA game buyers, lots of TV advertisements, etc. They spent much less for Shenmue II, though.

Kiyuu, did you attend many of these promotional events? Do you think that Shenmue could ever become popular in Japan again? Because despite all of these special events, sales still were not impressive enough :-k
I'm not really a gamer, and didn't play Shenmue until a year later from the release. Soon after I got this unexpected Shenmue fever, Shenmue II was announced. That's when I started watching over Shenmue. I attended "Game Jam" and "AM2 Summer Festival," where Shenmue II was promoted by Yu-san and Shenmue casts themselves. (I also went to "Game Jam II" next year to see Yu-san again.)

Well, it's true there still are some die-hard Shenmue fans in Japan waiting for the sequel, but it couldn't be sure if Shenmue become popular again, if it once was, in Japan. That's why SEGA's management has been reluctant to give a green light, I'm afriad. However, I really don't mind if Shenmue III wouldn't be a smash hit, as long as I can see the ending of the saga. All we need is a miracle here?

Re: Assassins Creed Series

I wouldn't mind if they started over and the new present day assassin started as Altair's grandson or great grandson in Alexandria, with a second scenario in Egypt.

From there take the series to China. not Sanguo but 1900s China during the time of Europeon imperialism.

It should also be noted that Assassin's creed hits pretty similar timelines to Black Adder. I'd be wrong if they don't just go the distance and make a game set in World War 1.

Re: What "makes" Shenmue for you?

Shenmue is a very personal game for me. Around the time the game came out, and I first started playing it, I was being bullied very badly at school, and home life really wasn't happy families, but Shenmue was always something that I could go back to to look after me and give me the warmth and comfort that I was otherwise not receiving from anywhere else. That, and even now, thirteen years later, Shenmue is able to do things that games haven't even come close to nowadays.

I'm not proud of very many things in my life, but I am proud to say that Shenmue changed my life and damn well made me who I am today.

Re: What "makes" Shenmue for you?

Shenmue is special to me for all the reasons everyone has said. For me, it's the incredible music, moving story, interesting characters, and the magic realism (my favorite genre). Something I think not a lot of people mention or appreciate about Shenmue is that it was pretty much the first game (and I can't think of another since) that atmospherically created an ordinary, even mundane world, that felt realistic. And yet, there are little hints of magic that start to develop and a great ancient secret or mystery buried in that, that slowly emerges as the series progresses. So you've got this great and unique mid-80s setting, so it feels modern, like home for many of us, but there's no internet, nothing to make the world seem small and less mysterious. On top of that, there were pretty much no games with changing seasons when Shenmue was released. That was wicked special at the time. So, it perfectly captures that wonderful feeling better than any game I have ever played. Also, it's Sega, so it just makes Christmas better.

I will never forget the 9/9/99 EGM magazine with the very first Shenmue preview. I still have it, and I'm still wildly impressed by the graphics, the style, the whole vision as described and shown in the screenshots. There is really nothing else like it. Almost every game then and today is overtly fantasy, or military games, or some combination.

Plus, the Dojo. Shenmue has a ridiculously close community, all of whom have similar taste in games, music, movies, etc., so that's definitely a huge part of what keeps it fresh because we've all been friends for so long, some since the beginning. Shenmue was always community oriented. Certainly, had Shenmue and the DC been a financial success, the series would have gone in the direction of community interaction as the successor to the original Passport, another interesting bonus that made the first game very special. Every part of it felt like you were discovering something profound by entering into a true virtual world.

I don't know, I think everything about Shenmue was just like destiny. It came at the right time in our lives and in Sega's history. A big part of it is that it was the crowning achievement of the Dreamcast, and that system was so much fun, and it was just such a great time for gaming all around. I mean, it wasn't too long after the first 3d cards, everyone was excited about the nextgen consoles and the amazing new graphics we were going to get, speculating on where it would lead, and so on. It was a very interesting time, and Shenmue represented this huge new vision that everyone wanted to be a part of, and if you were one of the few people with a DC, it was like you had been given a key to another world. That's what it was. It was like we discovered a world together.

If I could go back and live those years over again, I would.

Re: Vote for Ryo in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transforme

Quiet in here today!

Here are the current tallies:

Segata Senshiro - 1896
Hatsune Miku - 1633
Ryo Hazuki - 796
Vectorman - 716
Ristar - 622
Bayonetta - 576
ToeJam & Earl - 437
Billy Hatcher - 352
Blaze Fielding - 278
Axel Stone - 271
Phantom R - 268
Alis Landale - 239
Arle Nadja - 213
Sakura Shinguji - 203
Selvaria Bles - 202
Ash - 196
Opa Opa - 188
Welkin Gunther - 171
The ChuChus - 141
Space Harrier - 141
Bonanza Bros - 140
Kazuma Kiryu - 138
Sketch Turner - 129
Amitie - 109
Rag Rappy - 65
Jacky Bryant - 54

The top two seem uncatchable, but Ryo needs to keep his pedal to the metal if we don't want Vectorman nipping at his heels again. As they always say, the best defense is a strong offense, so we need to keep pushing forward right up until December 1st.

For anyone who missed it before the Sanshiro/Chuck Norris talk, I made a video that you might like to share when promoting the petition. Maybe it's not deemed worthy, I don't know, but here's the link if you want it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mj-3jUf3PLc

Re: Vote for Ryo in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transforme

I can't speak for everyone, but its been a real fuckin long time, and many of us have been around the whole time. I don't think its people turning their nose up at something that wasen't started on the Dojo (we all got on top of this and it didn't start on the Dojo) its more that the constant campaigning doesn't seem like its making an impact to most of us.
I completely understand that. Time and disappointment breed apathy and cynicism. If anyone's got a right to succumb to those effects, it's Shenmue fans.

On the other hand, the Tweetathon was designed to be as easy as possible. Once a month, on the same day, post one tweet with the same hashtag. That's the bare minimum, and you're done for another month. The aim is for your tweet to inspire someone else, who might post their own which then gets retweeted. As the months go by, the snowball effect takes hold. We're seeing it happen, and while it's yet another Shenmue campaign, it has a whole new psychology behind it. One that ultimately may not even succeed, but in the meantime it's keeping the name active in people's minds until one of those people comes up with something better.

There's no good reason not to support this, but I take on board what you're saying - some people's hesitance certainly isn't about whether it was originally a Dojo project or not. My post above was about those for whom I still believe it might be. I just hope they're a minority who get over it soon.

EDIT:

Just had a look on Sega's forum, and there may be sticky times ahead for this petition.

Sumo's now saying that if more than three characters qualify past the 1000 mark, it won't necessarily be the top three who get presented to Sega. Other factors will be considered, with preference possibly given to those who have not already featured in the All-Stars Racing series. *GULP*

If it gets to that stage, fans will be invited to debate the matter on Sega's forum, putting forth arguments for why their favorite character should be chosen. My fear is that no amount of arguing will outweigh the fact that Ryo's already had a turn and, say, Vectorman hasn't.

So what we have to hope for, first and foremost, is that the "1000+ Club" remains pretty exclusive. Miku might be ruled out (to quote S0L: "If a character can't be done for licensing, legal or other reasons, we will have runners up as alternatives"), so that gives us a little breathing room perhaps, and I don't even know if they'd be allowed to use Segata Senshiro's likeness (it's a real-life actor, after all), so the chances are reasonable that it won't come down to a debate and preferential treatment. But lets all start sticking pins in Vectorman dolls to be on the safe side.

Re: Vote for Ryo in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transforme

HOLY FUCK! 1600?! First time in a long time the community even some of the vets who are more known for being distant in these things contributed. Awesome.

Don't be so surprised. There's a world of Shenmue fandom outside the Dojo's walls. One thing I hope people take from this experience is that different groups should be working together a lot more often, instead of the insular, almost tribal attitude that some people seem to have.

Earlier in this thread, when Ryo was struggling to pick up steam, someone asked "where are those Twitter guys now?" - referring to fans who participate in the monthly Tweetathons. But the question could just as easily be asked every 3rd of the month - where are those Dojo guys now? While some members of this site embrace it as a proactive movement towards Shenmue III, others seem to look down their nose because it didn't originate at the Dojo. But we are all one fanbase, we shouldn't be thinking in terms of us and them within what is already a niche community. I post wherever I can - here, Shenmue 500K, Shenmue UK, and of course Team Yu. If I had more than even a cursory recollection of my French lessons at school, I'd be joining the conversations at Shenmue Master as well. Integration and co-operation makes us all stronger, as this All-Stars Racing petition has proven. No single website or group could have done it alone, and I hope that resonates going forward.

Re: Vote for Ryo in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transforme

I completely understand that. Time and disappointment breed apathy and cynicism. If anyone's got a right to succumb to those effects, it's Shenmue fans.

I'm historically one of them. However as of late been much more involved and finally updating my collection a little. Also might be a big part is that my life has been hell for a few years and the storm has settled and happy and more clear headed. So got more into Shenmue again.

Re: Vote for Ryo in Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing Transforme

too bad no one else really has a chance. It'd be cool to see Alys or Welkin

I've also never really known Fujioka to turn stuff down, i mean he was even in a Pokeon movie.

I don't drink coffee, but if I did, that'd be the one.

Re: Something from Shenmue you want for real?

Haha, agree about caligraphy. For them it's more than an art. Years and years of practice.

Re: Something from Shenmue you want for real?

The community. Every knows you and you know them. All so nice and helpful. Not the random NPC but the community people. That would be a great place to live. I'm the most socially inept person you may meet unless it's one of those great communities and then I interact like there is no tomorrow.

Re: Never Forget About Shenmue

Very good. I think some QTE's were better than others, but one of the best parts of the game was that amazing QTE escape in Kowloon with Ren. That is still probably the most cinematic experience in any game I've ever played.

Yeah, and don't forget the final strike to Dou Niu.
Oh my god, I jumped from the chair watching it at first time saying "GAIMOOOOOOONNNNNNNNN CHOCHUUUUU!!!!!" :rotflmao:

I was only 16

I still remember it as the most epic strike in my videogame history.

Re: Skies of Arcadia HD news (GAF topic)

Good news in the sense this pretty much leaves all but Shenmue. Plus Skies is a great game. Nice to see an epic RPG getting a re-release in this fashion.

I used to joke that Sega would end up porting Toe Jam and Earl before Shenmue, but that's actually happening now. So really, what's left? :???:

Also, Ziming/Peter...if you have non-public info that you aren't sharing (sounds pessimistic anyway), the least you can do is not make vague, public references to it. Shame [-X [-(

I have been talking about it, and planning it for a year, but today i leave Belfast and travel to Australia. To say i am nervous would be an understatement, but i will just keep powering through and try to enjoy the ride. I will be logging on as much as i can and keeping you updated, and i wont forget about here. :)
