Re: Variations of the patch image on the front of Ryo's jack

Interesting subject. The recently licensed Insert Coin Shenmue hoodie has the 'flags' patch embroidered on it.

Re: My theory about Shenmue 3

mynintendonews.com seems to think it's Epic Games who are responsible for the Japanese Garden Wii U Demo...
http://mynintendonews.com/2012/02/23/epic-games-says-gdc-2012-unreal-engine-demos-shall-have-you-gasping/

The link is of a slightly different showing of the demo, showing the interaction of the controller within it...

Help! IDIOTS GUIDE to COMBINED...

...Duck Race & Fangmei's Birthday in one timeline for one playthrough!

I've reached that point where I just have to play through Shenmue II DC again! But this time I want to get two things in one playthrough as I have never experienced either... 'Fangmei's Birthday' AND 'The Duck Race', (with medals and the Eileen/Izumi fights). I've looked around and found many examples of how to do each one separately, then tried to combine the two into the same timeline on paper first as a kind of 'Idiot's Guide' to activate them both in a single playthrough, but as I have never experienced either I just can't see how to combine them :???: Is it even possible to do them both in one playthrough? If so can anyone provide the chronology of the steps to follow for both in one playthrough. As much as I love Shenmue I don't want to do them in two separate games, unless I have to.

I've found these two posted here separately but I couldn't find them both combined in the same timeline for one playthrough... apologies in advance if it IS here and I've missed it. Thanks!

Re: Playing Dreamcast on an HDTV

One thing to remember, the whole point of Sega making the 480P VGA box in the first place was to REMOVE the scanlines created by the limitations of conventional CRT television of the time that could only accept a 480i signal. It was designed to give you a picture that was not broken up by empty black lines with no picture data every other line, but actually contained UNIQUE image data for every line when connected to a CRT Monitor. So, by adding back scanlines after you have connected a VGA box means you are simulating the inferior CRT televisions 480i signal after you have just made it better with a 480P signal?! If a 480i signal with scanlines is all you want then why buy the VGA box in the first place, just buy an RGB scart cable and an old CRT television and, hey presto, you have clean 480i signal with native scanlines and without the expense of the VGA box. Like I said before, scanline generators are fine with 240 2D sprite based DC games as by the time they hit your monitor when using a VGA box they have had a duplicate of the line next to them added to bring it up to 480P, the extra lines of image data were never present in the game in the fisrt place to be lost, so adding black scanlines to every other line is only losing you a DUPLICATE of the line next to it, but by adding scanlines to a 480P signal means you are removing every other line that contains UNIQUE image data that the clever VGA box is working so hard to give you in the first place!!

Scanlines for 240, 2D sprite based games = Nice!
Scanlines for 480P '3D' polygon games like Shenmue = Replacing image data with empty black lines; image loss!

Re: Shenmue 2D

Great work YCC, I'm hoping this project goes the distance, there have been many over the years that I've got excited about. Just some positive feedback; the first concept on the left, with the jacket creases... to me the small creases on the arm of the jacket help to give it a bit of substance, kind of shows that the jacket is weighty and has a thickness like leather, as indeed Ryo's jacket is leather. Like the new style, looks more professional in my opinion. Again, just my opinion, I see what you mean about the cuteness of the face on the first concept but some elements like the eyes, eyebrows, hair and hair shape of concept 1 look preferable to me, seems more like Ryo.

Good job, looking forward to seeing this progress =D>

Re: Shenmue 2D

Nice work, the face and hair/hair shape look absolutely spot on to me, superior to the already good concepts 1 and 2!

Re: SHENMUE XMAS SPECIAL DOWNLOAD.....FINALLY!!

I just got the bad ending on my first playthrough!

There has really been a lot of work put into this,
*spoiler* * I like the appearance of the 'Unknown' person that gets you checking the Heavenly Beasts compass and really liked the friends all getting together for the Christmas party * nice artwork and familiar music, thanks for uploading it for us all to enjoy...

Just some positive feedback; I know this is a beta, and a good one at that, however the appearance of the name checks throughout the game rather than at the end, break the atmosphere for me a bit. Definitely enjoyed it though, great to see someone actually complete a project, will try for the good ending next time.

Would be good to see Chapter 2 'The Boat'... :)

Re: My Shenmue Origin Story Video

Great video James, really entertaining!

I got into Shenmue aged 29 as soon as I brought a Dreamcast in 2000. I'd just moved house after a big 6 year relationship split, so had plenty of time to spare and emotions were up and down, it just came at the right time for me. I'd get home late at night from my shift work, the house was quiet, it was dark outside, I'd put on Shenmue and relax into it. I have said the same in the past; when I first stepped outside the Hazuki main gate and heard the freeroam music I felt the potential depth of Shenmue, I could feel it would be emotional too. I just stood still and listened for a while, looking round, seeing a cat down to the right of me. Many times I'd wake up at 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning having fallen asleep in front of the TV, clutching the controller, to see the first person view out of the forklift of a wall that had stopped me as I'd nodded off whilst moving crates in Yokosuka! I too felt like this was a place I was visiting rather than playing a game... Hanging around Dobuita at night around Christmas, seeing the drunk Santa, taking my time with it all, soaking it in, checking out as much as I could about the people 'living' in these new places I found myself.

It was at this time I put Shenmue down for a while, for no other reason than the bug when working in Yokosuka. I believe it only affects the Pal version. A necessary cut scene couldn't be triggered if you delivered the crates by driving the 'wrong' route to and from the warehouse, so you'd find yourself in this endless loop of crate delivery. I worked in Yokosuka for perhaps 2 weeks (real life weeks!). Anyhow, not having the internet back then I couldn't get past it and eventually sold my DC and Shenmue. Some years later I re-bought them after finding the solution (you had to drive the route past the white van at least once to trigger the needed scene) and eventually completed it, then tracked down a copy of Shenmue II and the rest is history...

Like you I was already into Japan by the time Shenmue came out, but Shenmue really hammered home my interest in all things Nihon. Both games have left a massive lasting impression with me, like most people here. Sometimes I feel a bit odd about attributing so much to a game, but that's just how it is...
