Re: Character guide

Does anyone have the scanned images from that massive Shenmue II guide?
Yes; and I might as well announce properly here that the character database I was working on is very nearly finished and will be released soon
I have some scans from the Shenmue II Perfect Guidebook (basically the character profiles) that a member called Eek the Cat originally scanned (don't think he's around anymore); I don't own that book myself, but I do own the 'Shenmue II Complete Guide' which includes some profiles that the Perfect Guidebook doesn't. I'll post the scans I have along with the database once it's done :D

So watch this space - names and profiles on all 696(!) Shenmue II characters translated directly from these books coming very soon :D

SII CHAR DATABASE-ALL 700 (AND 1) CHARACTERS! UPDATE 27/3/15

Yep. After nearly a decade, it's done, people :D

HISTORY OF THE SHENMUE II CHARACTER DATABASE PROJECT
Ever since casting my eyes upon screenshots of Shenmue published in the (now defunct) UK magazine Computer and Video Games, I have been absolutely enthralled by the series. This game was definitely something different. As the famous tagline proclaimed in the trailers before its release – RPG had changed. Sure, hailing the game as being its own exciting new “genre” with a somewhat silly acronym as its name (FREE- Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment) was being a tad overzealous perhaps, but you had to admire Yu Suzuki’s ambition for this game. When I finally got to play it on the Christmas morning of 2000, it did not disappoint. The atmosphere created was just amazing to me – a realistic, living, breathing town with over 300 individual characters – all with their own specific daily routines and, in supplementary materials, all named and given detailed biographies! Throw in the fantastic music and the engaging (if not completely original) story and you really had something special. And this was only part one of the saga...

Bundled with the game was the ‘Shenmue Passport’ disc. Through the Dreamcast’s internet connection, this enabled access to all sorts of information about the game, as well as ranking leaderboards for the various mini-games and the chance to get exclusive capsule toys. One of the best features was the character profile section however; as you met and conversed with the characters during a playthrough, their profiles would gradually be added to the Passport. Now to some, giving all 300+ characters names, stats, and biographies may seem extraneous, (especially given characters that Ryo can’t even speak to have detailed information about them!) but it really shows the love and care put into the game by the developers and the amount of depth to Shenmue that few games have matched.

PASSPORT EXPIRED
The Passport service was eventually taken offline in April 2002, but thankfully the character profiles had also been published in Prima’s strategy guide book for the game, so the information was still readily available to fans.
Which brings us to the sequel game, Shenmue II – which I got the following Christmas in 2001. This sadly could end up being the last game in the series, despite it ending on a cliffhanger and at a game-changing point in the saga’s story. Nonetheless, the sequel’s world was even bigger than the first’s– Ryo travels to Hong Kong to continue his quest, with most of its areas completely dwarfing Shenmue I’s in terms of size, as well as the amount of characters – around 700. There was also a lot more mini-games and sidequests to discover, and fans generally agree it is more action-packed and that the plot moves a lot quicker than the first game (though some will argue Shenmue I’s atmosphere has more charm) And what of these 700-odd characters? Were they all named and profiled as per the original game? As it turns out, yes – but these were not readily available to the fans outside of Japan.

Firstly, unlike the first Shenmue, there was no Passport. There was no Prima guide either, as the Dreamcast version had been cancelled in America. America eventually saw an updated version of Shenmue II on the Microsoft Xbox, and a Prima guide was finally published. However, unlike the Shenmue I book, there were only profiles on the main characters; Ryo, Shenhua, Xiuying, Fangmei, Ren, Joy, Wong, Lan Di, Dou Niu and Yuan. The Xbox version, with the new snapshot feature, did include profiles on some of the other characters; unlocked when you took pictures of them, but it didn't come close to having profiles for all the characters. Would we ever know the names and backgrounds of the reams of anonymous characters?

A FAN EFFORT
Shortly after I had completed Shenmue II, I looked around on the internet for fansites/information about the series, ultimately finding the excellent Shenmue Dojo website. I joined the forums, and this was in fact one of the first message boards I signed up to on the internet. My handle on the forum was (and still is) ‘Miles Prower’, as I am also a long-time fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog series of games (and Sega games in general). I made a lot of good friends through the Dojo community and have many fond memories associated with the forums. I think between us we have probably discussed every single aspect of the games to death, but as many fans will attest, you find or notice something new with every playthrough of these wonderful games. Not to mention the very active hacking/modding scene that developed, mostly headed by longtime member LanDC, in which reams of unused content was discovered and many interesting and or humourous modifications made to the game. I still get a warm nostalgic feeling every time I watch LanDC’s Road to Amihama videos in particular.

And indeed, the question of whether detailed character profiles existed for Shenmue II’s cast was raised in discussion. In a thread from 2003, a member named Eek the Cat shared some scans of a guidebook he owned published in Japan called the Shenmue II Perfect Guidebook. The scans showed that there were indeed names and profiles for each and every character.
Eek was even kind enough to put all of the scans together on a CD for me and mail it to me, and even threw in a couple of audio CD’s he had compiled containing music from Shenmue II (sadly the second game never had any official soundtracks released).

The problem? Being that this book was from Japan, the character names were in Chinese and the information in Japanese. Through discussion in the topic, another forum member called khien agreed to help with translating the character names as she could read Chinese. And so began the effort to translate the many character profiles. I began by gradually posting them within the topic, and then eventually creating a website (which, thanks to Web Archive, you can still view here , albeit with most of the images missing).

Continuing into 2004 and beyond, progress was quite slow, mainly due to me starting university. Khien’s life ended up becoming quite busy as well, but thanks to the efforts of another forum member, Oda Ryo, the translation work still continued. The forum member Kiyuu (possibly Japan’s biggest Shenmue fan, and often referred to as the ‘Shenmue Queen’), also informed me that another book existed, the Shenmue II Complete Guide, which contained profiles for characters not included in the Perfect Guidebook; namely those for the many pedestrians who wander the streets of Hong Kong. I made the effort to acquire this book myself and make scans for the remaining profiles.

RESSURECTING THE PROJECT
As the years went on, however, my free time became less and less. I studied for three years at university and after graduating in 2008, I was working full time; in short I was growing up. It was also looking increasingly unlikely that a Shenmue III would ever emerge. Life went on. However, my enthusiasm to complete the project was somewhat fired up again when Peter from the forums (who most likely owns the biggest Shenmue collection in Ireland) got in touch with me on Facebook asking if I was still working on it, as the Dojo staff had managed to get an interview with one of the voice actors for the English dub of Shenmue II (a very interesting read by the way, which can be found here , and they had requested that video clips be assembled of the characters he voiced, which he supplied a list of – but only by name and brief descriptions. Using the information from my project I helped with finding some of them. I then found myself wanting to get the project finished once and for all, and got back in touch with Oda Ryo who happily assisted me with getting the remaining names translated.

I had also spoken to the member ‘thegreatchai’, who had also been attempting to catalogue the character information on her wiki site, and over time we assisted each other greatly. I began transferring the information to an Excel spreadsheet with the intention of creating a complete database of all the Shenmue II characters – which after assembling a numbered list I discovered there are exactly 700 – surely a deliberate intention of the creators? At any rate, after a few months work the project was finally finished. I am glad that this information is now easily accessible to Shenmue fans, and while some may consider me obsessive or downright insane for pursuing with the project, it was worth it for a game series that I love so much and one day hope will be continued in some form. We can but hope. The saga may still go on....

Re: SHENMUE II CHARACTER DATABASE - ALL 700 CHARACTERS!!

Agh - if I'd remembered today, Nov 29th, was Ryo's birthday (as well as the date Shenmue I begins), I would have held off from releasing the database until today to make it special haha

I do have one present though ;-) For those who might be interested, I've uploaded the scans of the profiles from the Perfect Guidebook that were sent to me by Eek the Cat all those years ago...just in case anyone was curious to see them. The text in these scans is Chinese/Japanese - obviously you now have the database itself for the translations :P

Here's the link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/x963i8zekunixte/Shenmue%20II%20Perfect%20Guidebook%20Scans.rar?m

And a pic of one the pages as a preview:
http://i767.photobucket.com/albums/xx318/askvera/shen2profiles_page02.png

And thanks for the kind words everyone - felt good to finally get it finished :D

this is fantastic work BUT its a shame it still isn't as detailed as Shenmue 1's Biography's.. I would have given my soul if the people who created this wrote their own in line with what the chracaters did in the game
Yeah, I hear you, it is a pity...writing 700 detailed bios probably would have been a bit of a tall order though, it's still pretty cool they bothered to name/give stats to everybody :)

EDIT: Link corrected, apologies!!

SHENMUE II- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

SHENMUE II FAQ

If you require any form of material for Shenmue II, be it music, artwork, or whatever, please check here first;
http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/shenmue2.shtml

Character profiles (please note that both of these are not yet fully complete);
http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/shenmue2_characters.shtml
http://home.graffiti.net/milesprower/s2charprofiles.htm

Q. I want to download a certain music track from Shenmue II, where can I get it?
First, PLEAAAASE check here before asking;
http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/shenmue2_music.shtml
If we do not have the track you are looking for, then please keep in mind that LanDC is currently in the process of ripping all the music, so be patient; most if not all of the tracks will be up eventually.

Q. Can I use my save from the US version of Shenmue I on the PAL version of Shenmue II (Dreamcast version)
It is indeed possible. This FAQ should help you. Follow this link, and then scroll down until you see the "US-to-UK save conversion FAQ", and click on it.

Q. I am stuck on a certain part, HELP!
Check here first;

Q. How do I get the Bad Ending?
The Bad Ending is triggered on June 31st; so it is a punishment for taking too long to finish the game. The best way to get through the days fast is to keep failing the event at Zhangyu’s Barber Shop, by pressing A every time.
You can download the Bad Ending here;
English: http://www.fileplanet.com/dl.aspx?/planetxbox/shenmuedojo/Shenmue/shenmue2x/2xbadendmpg.zip
Japanese:

Q. I’m having trouble unlocking everything on the Shenmue Collection, help!
Here’s a useful guide;
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/dreamcast/file/shenmue_ii_collection.txt

Q. I’m having trouble getting all the snapshots needed on the Xbox version, help!/How do I unlock the sidestory comics?
Here’s a useful guide;
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox/file/shenmue_ii_shots.txt

Q. Are Ziming and Lan Di the same person?
There is sufficient evidence to suggest that Ziming and Lan Di are NOT the same person.
Firstly, Ziming’s full name is Ziming Hong; and we know now that Lan Di’s real name is Zhao Longsun. Two different names.
Also, this sidestory comic that can be unlocked on the Xbox version of Shenmue II seems to suggest they aren’t the same person; (take particular notice of the last page)

http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/images/story/comics/Xiuying&Zimming00.jpg

http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/images/story/comics/Xiuying&Zimming01.jpg

http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/images/story/comics/Xiuying&Zimming02.jpg

http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/images/story/comics/Xiuying&Zimming03.jpg

While the figure of the present-day Ziming is quite shadowy, you can see clearly that it is not Lan Di.

This is a picture of the four leaders of the Chi You Men that was released on Shenmue.com.
http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/images/shenmue3/preview/large/no44_pic_03.jpg

While the other three with Lan Di are obscured, it is immediately obvious that it is Niao Sun to the right of Lan Di (You can find more information on her here; http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/shenmue3_preview.shtml
, who is featured with Ziming in the aforementioned sidestory comic. And that seems to be Ziming on the far right in this picture. This picture should show you again that Lan Di and Ziming are not the same person;
http://www.planetxbox.com/shenmuedojo/images/shenmue3/preview/zimingnotlandi.jpg
On a sidenote, some people often believe a scar can be seen on the face of the young Ziming, like Lan Di’s, however if you look closer, it seems to just be dirt, like on Wong’s face.

By the way, the identity of the person on the far left of the Four Leaders pic is not yet known.

Q. What does Joy say to Ryo outside the Come Over Guest House on the morning before his first day of work?
The language Joy speaks in this scene is Chinese, and what she says translates to "Did you have pleasant dreams?" This is understood to be a traditional morning greeting in China.

Q. Is it possible to say goodbye to Joy when leaving Wan Chai?
Nope. Although, if you didn’t trigger the conversation with her at Fortune’s Pier where you talk about Master Chen and Gui Zhang before the day where you have to say goodbye to everyone, you can do it on that very day. Ryo doesn’t say goodbye to her though.

Q. Is there anywhere you can train alone?
Unfortunately not. While in Wan Chai, spar with Jianmin. In Kowloon there are many street fights you can participate in. But there is nowhere you can train alone.

Q. How do I get the Duck Races?
You can only do this at Disc 2. First, visit Tomato Convenience Store at Golden
Qr. and make a friend with Izumi. Go to Pigeon Park and talk to Eileen
Edelweiss who training Tai Chi arts and facing the ocean. She should talk to
you first and challenge you into a fight.

Now go to Green Market Qr. And enter the alleyway next Green Market Pawnshop
where there are Roll It on Top and Lucky Hit Stands. Go straight when you enter
the alley and you will see a store where a man is arranging some cardboard
boxes. If you have not followed the steps above, then the back door will be
still nailed-shut. But if you've done the steps, the back door should be
opened. Enter the back door to the vacant lot. There's some free collectibles
and a Big Bronze Medal for you. Take them all.

If you go to Pine Arcade game, the 3F should be opened. Go to 3F and choose
[Participate] when the man asks you and pay $20. Here you have to fight Eileen.
You will get Big Silver Medal. You can participate again and this time you will
have Izumi as your opponent. It's the remixed Tomato's theme song when you're
fighting her. She has a lot of deadly moves. But you can win easily by avoiding
her attack and do the triple punch combo. When her gauge is already near the
limit, she will try to grab you in her ultimate move. This time you will have
to do NQTE by pressing [X+B,Y+A]. Quite difficult isn't it? Not only that, you
will have to do this for several times until you win. If you failed, Izumi will
knock you down by her ultimate move "Viva Sakura Festival".

After you win, Izumi will promise to take you to an interesting place. Now go
to Tomato Convenience Store and press X Button when you're facing to Izumi. She
will take you to Wise Man's Qr. where the duck race is being held. Read the
"Gambling" section for the rule.

You also can participate your own duck in the race. To get your own duck, you
must go to Man Mo Temple's backyard and you can press the X Button at the tree
again to catch some more leaves. Catch two or more leaves in one catch. Do this
two times. Next, a white feather should fall with the other leaves. Catch the
feather and Ryo should say "Damn!". Choose [Catch] to catch the duck and you
will have it as a key item.

If you go to the Duck Race, you can pay $50 to participate your duck in the
race. Press R Trigger to accelerate and D-Pad to control the duck. It reminds
me of the forklift race from Shenmue I. Win the race and you will have the Big
Gold Medal as your prize.

After you win the gold medal, I think it's impossible to win again that race
since some baby ducks race against your duck. They have incredible speed and
stamina.

Q. How do I trigger the Fangmei’s Birthday event?
This is a VERY detailed guide which I highly recommend;

Re: SII CHAR DATABASE-ALL 700 (AND 1) CHARACTERS! UPDATE 27/

^(belated) thanks for that Giorgio :)
So, turns out I actually missed a character out from the database, whoops. The character in question, Wen Cheng Xiao , has a profile in both official guidebooks, but I thought he was unused because I simply could not find him in the game; I always encountered a different character, Zai Hong En, at the Kowloon Dentist instead. I made a topic about this waaaay back in 2006 actually http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31623

However recently I discovered I was wrong - after watching Bluemue's video of one of his Kowloon room raids, specifically the Moon Child Bldg, I was very confused to see that he found Cheng Xiao in the dentist! So I investigated this myself and found out that, in fact, they are both at Kowloon Dentist - it just seems to be entirely random who you get. I entered and exited the dentist numerous times and found it kept changing between the two - in fact at a couple of points, I witnessed one TRANSFORM into the other in front of Ryo's very eyes! I'm not sure if the programmers intended this or whether its a glitch/oversight, as the Golden Dentist next door is always empty - no NPC can be found in there. I'm thinking one of them must have been meant to be put in there, especially considering the guidebooks say Hong En is at the Golden Dentist (when as I said, he is actually at Kowloon Dentist with Cheng Xiao).

So the long and short of it; I had to go back and add Cheng Xiao, as he is not unused as I first thought, meaning there are actually 701 characters in the game, not 700. It bothers my OCD slightly that the total isn't a round number, but there you go :P For those who actually care, the updated database is still in the link in my signature. Enjoy!

Re: SHENMUE 3 ANNOUNCED FOR PS4 KICKSTARTER (INFORMATION INS

Well, fuck , guys. I still can't believe this is actually happening. It was around 3am here when I saw the news and watched the trailer, so I was already in bed watching it on my phone, and I was utterly speechless, before cheering and proceeding to be extremely hyper, leaving my boyfriend extremely confused (though he understood once I explained - he's heard me witter on about Shenmue enough times!). I can't believe after all this time it is finally a reality. I was 14 years old when Shenmue II came out...now that I'm a 28 year old with actual responsibilities and stuff, I could only really afford a $29 pledge, but I knew I had to pay at least something. Like many others, I'm not entirely sure about the way Ryo and Shenhua look, but I'm sure this is only something they quickly knocked together for the trailer and they will look more like their old selves in the final game.

But yeah...I kept daydreaming about the day when this would happen (even faintly when I was beginning to lose hope), and now it's actually here...Yu, you magnificent bastard. You can tell how much he cares about us as fans, and in this day and age that is truly refreshing. I've been very cynical about gaming in general lately,, this current generation failing to excite me really, but obviously I must get a PS4 now (I don't think I'll ever have a PC capable of running it in this lifetime!). I'm already getting excited about posting here again and being a part of all the pre-release buzz, where we will no doubt analyse every screenshot and trailer we receive to death and back. And now I can finally play through the first two games without getting depressed :P

It's been a hell of a wait guys, but hopefully it will be worth it. We only went and fucking did it!!!

Re: What's happened in your life in the past 14 years?

Let's see -

*Went to uni, got an English Literature degree
*Got a few full time jobs, the current one being a support worker for people with autism (with shit pay for what it involves)
*Realised I was gay and came out gradually to family and friends
*Moved out of my parents house
*Got a long-term boyfriend, who I currently share a house with
*Started writing a novel, and also currently trying to get a poetry collection published

It's crazy to think all this has happened in my life since Shenmue II came out...and by the time 3 does, I will be 30 years old...goddamn...

So yeah, life isn't too bad...sharing a house with the love of my life, still play games when I actually get the time, writing in my spare time with the hope of being a published author one day...could do without all the responsibilities and bills and shit, but all part of getting older I guess *grumble*. I've actually just realised I'll be 30 by the time Shenmue III comes out...now that is depressing...won't stop me squeeing like a little girl when I finally sit down and play it though.

Re: Famitsu scans

Ryo's model there is definitely better than the one in the trailer. His face is thinner and the hair is closer to his classic Shenmue model. Just goes to show that his model will be improved, so people shouldn't be worried anymore.

I will ask Kiyuu if she is around, to translate as much if the article as she can, would be much appreciated.
Glad it's not just me that thought the model looked different haha, yeah that looks so much better :D
These are some truly lovely shots, still crazy to think we're looking at real Shenmue III screenshots after all this time...And actually yeah, has Kiyuu posted since all this happened??

Re: Never have been this footage before!

stuff i noticed

chai on crane at night, not in main game, at least we don't see him there
Iwao character model is different, looks younger
Ryo collects Zhu Yuanda letters from the mail box himself rather than than being given it by ine san. 4.49
beta yamanose
ryo's jacket rides up further and has some kind of crease folding, fabric movement effect
different forklift models
arcade very different, flat table machines. and plants
phone booth much smaller, narrower
locking onto and speaking to a woman on a balcony!
ryo has different stance in free battle, looks weird, leans forward, maybe there was a pose for when he gets tired in battle.
old terry qte chase (seen before)
beating up mark (seen before)
chai doesn't eat ticket!
buoys, nets in water at harbour
snow gathering at the edge of water itself

they probably couldn't use this footage for promotion since so many little things had changed by final release.
Dang, beat me to it :P
Yeah, just finished watching this, can't say I've ever seen this before either! Some very interesting stuff here. Dobuita has a lot more going on than in the final as well, including a lot of NPC's that didn't make it to the final game at all, and also characters where they shouldn't be (Nomura-san was the owner of the motorcycle shop?)

Re: What's happened in your life in the past 14 years?

Seems to be a coming out connection! Lol. I wonder if the escapism of shenmue connected with people still trying to understand themselves and not feeling like they fit in?

I'm gay myself but I've never really thought about a connection until reading this topic.... It's known that certain mediums have connected with the 'disassociated or minorities'- X Men being a good example as it is known to have a higher proportion of fans from ethnic/sexual minorities- mutants represent them in a fantasy way I guess....
Gay Shenmue fans unite! Haha. And our representation within Shenmue itself seems to be confined solely to Dou Niu and Yuan...great eh? :rotflmao:
EDIT: Oh wait, I forgot Dory Gordie, the dancer/arm wrestler. Not explicitly stated, but COME ON.

I just finished watching Steins;Gate (which is actually based on a game), which is about time travel, kind of a slow start but it kicks into high gear in the second half, been watching on Netflix and watched several in one sitting, so really had me gripped. The theme song is also permanently stuck in my head...

Re: What would you want changed for a Shenmue HD?

The ability to save anywhere in Shenmue I would be nice. And perhaps the option to skip time while waiting for certain events/meetings, like in Shenmue II. Personally, I rarely used it as I like to kill time exploring/getting capsule toys etc but it would probably make the game more appealing to new fans.

Re: Suzuki,

He also mentioned in another interview that he had finally decided not to conclude the full story in Shenmue III.
I prefer this since it will at least be closer to his original vision that way. What's the point of rushing through a story and cutting out parts to make it fit in one game? If he does that it will likely not feel like the previous games at all. And the way the series immerse you with its pacing and daily life is also a big part of it all, not just the storyline itself. The other option would be to have the full story but due to the budget, the game would likely be very downscaled and closer to a collection of cutscenes.

They also know more about the funding than we do. Maybe they can already see that it's worth taking the risk? I also assume that more people would return for the "full experience" actually than the bare bones alternative.
Plus they will already have an engine and assests and all the bits of hard work that goes into making a game from scratch! It'll be like shenmue 2 from 1. They know they have a solid/dedicated fanbase too. They might as well do a 4 sooner than later after 3 imo...
This is a very good point. A lot of the hard work will have already been done. Let's just hope S3 is succesful enough that S4 will be a sure thing, and that Yu won't have to compromise or rush anything story-wise...

Re: Things that get on your proverbial tits

Twats at the gym who sit at the machine for an eternity playing on their phones or taking *ugh* selfies...matter of fact, add 'selfie-sticks' to the list as well, still can't believe we live in a world where those are a thing...
And people being glued to their mobile phones in general, really. As a support worker/carer myself nothing pisses me off more than seeing colleagues piss about on their phone rather than pay attention to the people they are paid to engage with and look after :(

Re: What jobs will there be in Shenmue 3?

I'd like to see some more "rural tasks" in the open on top of the crate carrying and other stuff in towns.
A lot of good ideas have already been mentioned like fishing, collecting herbs and cutting wood.

Like to see some jobs involving animals. Maybe taming wild horses or even some hunting with traps.
And Ryo has to become a professional duck trainer. Seriously, the duck racing needs to return.
Ah-ha, I hadn't even thought of that! Would be a perfect excuse for the duck racing to return :D

And I'm still finding new stuff on Shenmue 1! o_O

Yep, hard to believe. That's the beauty of Shenmue ^_^
I'm going through the game again, this time at a slow pace--talking to everybody I can find when Ryo has a new question.
So, when he was trying to translate the letter, I asked Mario if he could read Chinese. He said "No, but I can read Italian!"
That's not the funniest part though, keep talking to him, and he teaches you Italian words! Be sure to keep talking until you've heard them all.
When I asked Mayumi, she said "Oh! I'm taking Chinese at college. I should be able to read it for you in a year"
Ryo: Sorry, but I can't wait that long.
Mayumi: Yeah, I guess so
I'd advise everyone to talk to EVERYONE every time Ryo's question changes--you can get some pretty damn funny conversations.

Re: And I'm still finding new stuff on Shenmue 1! o_O

Hopefully no one objects to my bumping of this topic, but it's one of my favorite discussions and I've remembered it quite well over the years and I was finally able to find it. Not only is it a nostalgia kicker, these hidden conversations truly highlight what makes this game so special. While I believe Shenmue 2 improved upon Shenmue 1 in an abundance of ways, it did have to leave behind a certain magic that only Yokosuka and its colorful cast of characters were able to bring to Shenmue 1.

Feel free to post any other tidbits you might dig up (or new ones you might stumble across). It's easy to get impatient and just proceed with the story, since we all could play this game with our eyes closed, but there are some really rich conversations out there if you take the time to explore a bit.

And since I've been digging around old topics in the past week or so and am at a good point to try this in my current save, here's a link to Kiyuu's topic regarding the Mr Yukawa easter egg:

http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10755
No objection at all dude :) Was a trip reading through this 12(!) years later, I'd forgotten about half the stuff that I posted about :P Will have to see if I find anything new when I play through S1 again, I have my Dreamcast at home but foolishly left S1 at my parents, so will have to wait until next time I'm there to pick it up. I'm seriously itching to play both games through again, now that we know the saga is continuing :D

I completely agree with you about that 'certain magic' that S1 has, as fantastic a game as S2 is it is definitely lacking that certain something the atmosphere of Yokosuka had.

I fully intend on taking my time when I do get to play through :)

Nice to see things fully clarified :) Even if it doesn't make the 10m mark, I'm still beyond happy Shenmue III is even happening at all.

Re: Yuan's Revenge - Decensoring Shenmue II

By the way, there's one other change that was made - in the Japanese version, the baseball guy who plays darts wears a t-shirt that says 'DEATHBALL 666', which was changed in the European DC and Xbox version for obvious reasons (I forget what it says instead)

Re: Relationships in Shenmue III

Should they start having some focus in Ryo's love life in Shenmue 3? Who would he be with? Should the possibility of same-sex relationships happen like what Nintendo is doing with Fire Emblem Fate? I
think it would be pretty interesting, especially bringing in the LGBT community. Imagine being able to pick between Joy, Ren, Shenhua or Gui Zhang?
Erm, no? Ryo isn't a 'blank slate' character like the ones in Mass Effect, Fable and similar games (and I assume this latest Fire Emblem?). We control some of his choices, true, but something like this would not be in the spirit of Shenmue IMO.

Re: Things that get on your proverbial tits

6. Those lame common sense questions people will say in public: "OH MY GOD TODAY IS FRIDAY RIGHT? IT'S FRIDAY?" Chill, you know its Friday and no one gives a fuck what your plans are.
Particularly annoying if you do shift work and you'll most likely be working the weekend anyway  Oh add that to the list too - people who work 9 to 5 who simply don't understand why you can't make something that's on an evening or a weekend because you're, you know, WORKING.

Re: 10000 dinner reward back up for grabs!

I feel guilty now, Peter...

I feel like I need to explain who I am now.. I'm not a casual Shenmue fan. My brother and I are 35. We are identical twins and we help lead a school just outside Guilin in Yangshou where we teach poor kids English in helping them get scholarships to achieve better education.

This was inspired by Shenmue. My Avatar is of me laying on a raft on the Lijiang river just outside Guilin.

I've been there from the beginning like most of you. This will be a great experience in my life that I will treasure until I die.

EDIT:

You can find us on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/VolunteerEnglishTeacher?fref=ts

A lot of the pictures are of my brother and I.

Here is me with the kids.

Just wanted to say, this is amazing, and good for you for the great work that you do :) Quite jealous, I would love to visit Guilin one day...

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Going through Shenmue and that little music riff that plays when it becomes 7pm and all the street lights turn on is so atmospheric and relaxing.

For some reason, that little jingle holds the greatest dose of nostalgia for me regarding the series. Have no idea why.
What's crazy is that there's actually a whole track you don't get to hear within the game! Always find it soothing and relaxing to listen to :)

Re: Should we be expecting AAA standards or indie standards?

It's a little early to tell, but yeah, I'm not sure if we should expect it to be quite on the same level/budget as the first two games...as long as it has everything that makes Shenmue Shenmue , however, then that's good enough for me. Just annoying that some of these stretch goals are so vague, as we don't have an idea of what the game will be like if they aren't met =/ I'm really really hoping it's not too linear, and that there is enough sidequests and extra things to do...I feel bad having these concerns, as a few short weeks ago we thought Shenmue III was never going to happen at all, but it'd be crushing to wait so long and for it to be a disappointment...

Re: How quickly can you complete Shenmue?

Yeah, it's done by skipping cutscenes and using some pretty major skipping glitches (you can basically skip most of Kowloon and go straight into the Yellow Head Building!) While I agree Shenmue should be savoured, puri puri's speedruns are pretty interesting to watch :) It's how I found out you can explore floors 19-39 of the Yellow Head Building just by using the map glitch ;-)

Re: Response from Joel

An Xbox version would cost YS more money to develop and eat up money that can be used purely for a better game. People need to get off it about this. After the game has long been released for PS4 and PC then start making requests for Xbox. We dont have the luxery of being able to get everything we want. We can still hardly get a physical PS4 release yet.
This. I am so sick and tired of seeing people moan saying, 'Wah I'm not gonna pledge cos I wanted it on Xbox!' or 'I'm not gonna pledge until they do a physical PS4 copy!'. I mean, for christ's sake, we're living in a world where Shenmue III is actually happening and the odd idiot acts like a spoilt entitled little brat about how they want it. You are quite right, money should be spent making the game as good as it can possibly be. We should be grateful to Sony about giving Yu this chance while Sega were quite happy to completely forget about the series.

Probably the Virtua Fighter series, which sadly seems to have gone into hibernation, despite Tekken 7 and Street Fighter 5 :( Never thought that we'd see a Shenmue 3 before Virtua Fighter 6!

Re: KS Update #23 - PS4 physical copy & New reward tiers add

4 million! Great :D
And yeah, people really shouldn't be worried about fan's faces appearing on characters/pictures in-game, I'm sure it will be done tastefully and in a way that doesn't break the immersion. Using backers' faces on Chi You Men members is probably a good move, as they will probably just be black-suited grunts seen very briefly in free battles/QTE's just like S2.
