Re: Shenmue I translated into Spanish

Here I am, once again, but this time with a different Shenmue: We're translating Shenmue II into Spanish. Or more like, we already have: All the subtitles are in Spanish (We're in the proofreading and testing process right now), but that's the largest part cleared.

This time the perpetrators are PASE, TheFireRed, el_capo, auron_roxas, xulikotony, Viola Rose, PacoChan, Viento and myself. Again, thanks to Manic, Sizious and Ayla.

Here's a couple of videos and a link to all the screenshots released so far:

Shenmue I and II translated into Spanish

Nobody will probably give a damn around this place, but, what the hell.

SegaSaturno.com and Traducciones del Tío Víctor have released the first version of the Spanish translation for Shenmue I.

We've covered a 100% of the subtitles and a 70-80% of the menus that were English-only, plus we translated the maps, we've restored the original Coca-Cola cans, and we even dubbed into Spanish (Spain) as well as Spanish (Latin America) the Shenhua's demo scene and the Hong Kong departure ending.

A big thanks to Sizious for his Shenmue tools. The people behind this project are Ryo Suzuki, el_capo, xulikotony, PacoChan, ShenmueTrad, Sizious, FamilyGuy & IlDucci.

To check more details, you can go here .

Here's the final trailer we did for this release. I'm sure many of you will know where it was taken from.

Re: Swapping NPCs in Shenmue 2 for Shenmue Collection

The Shenmue Collection menu seems to be at SCENE\04\OMAK\OMAK.EV1 That's where, at least, I found the subtitles in order to translate them. The graphics should be at the same folder, but a different file.

Re: Shenmue I (EDIT: and II) translated into Spanish

Been a long time since I've updated this post. Darn.

Well, the proofreading's getting into an advanced state, here's the progress report:

Graphics: 70% (Maps, menu graphics)
Texts:
- Cutscenes: 100% translated and proofread.
FREE Quest:
- Disc 1: 100% translated, 10% proofread.
- Disc 2: 100% translated, 10% proofread.
- Disc 3: 100% translated, 60% proofread.
- Disc 4: 100% translated and proofread.

I'm right now doing the porting of DC textures into XBOX but it's a pain in the ass (Anybody knows of a DDS mass ripper and reinjector? No texmod, please). I also forgot to show two videos, the first one is the Shenmue I ending dubbed into Latin American Spanish:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqZW9ohzF8s

And the second one shows that the translation projects for both Shenmues showcased at RetroMadrid 2013 and RetroBarcelona 2013 (Actually it went to more editions but I don't have visual proof).

We are doing the release as a patcher and not as a full image because of, more than legal issues, my personal policy as a romhacker/fantranslator. I'd like to keep things small and manageable. People who have the original GD-ROM and the SD Card Adapter should have no problems dumping their disc into a GDI image (.BIN or .ISO makes no difference), but I know this site doesn't go against releases, so: I know it's a bit hard finding a GDI image online, but it's possible. If you folks are going to do a full release, I know I can't stop you so I'd just ask you to do not make profit out of us.

That said, let's go to the details: The patcher has been tested with the following discs:
- 610-7179-0133A 11M1 o 11MB1 (TOSEC Version)
- 610-7179-0133A H1723E.

Both of those are the Blue Disc versions, any other Blue Disc or the Famitsu releases have not been tested . Should be fine if the data tracks are identical (We're fiddling with the audio tracks, but we're not needing an exact equivalent of them, which seems to be the biggest difference between versions).

And now the specifics. All the menus, texts and subtitles have been fully translated into English, Spanish and German. The patcher is multi-language, so you should be able to select your language there. The process lasts around 10 minutes or so. The patcher could be a great example that, with a little modification, we could have a Shenmue modding tool for small mods (Such as the Forklift one, bigger stuff like Undubs won't have that of a meaning).

The patcher takes a GDI image and turns it into a MDS/MDF image file that should run on a real hardware or in emulator. It has a dummy file for 700MB full size, all the CDDA tracks have been preserved thanks to the previous research by HyKan, and we've got a sortfile for reordering stuff (We've moved towards the inner part beta/unused stuff that's around). It's not the best optimization but it can be improved. Nothing is ripped or downsampled.

We've translated a couple of extra needed graphics here and there, such as the "Closed" signs in the shops that are not available for the demo (like Tomato Convenience Store), Yukawa's Business Card or the poster from the ending scene. There's a couple of things I'd like to improve in a possible future release, but for now, we've done all we could. The rest is like it was in the original game.

Some troubleshooting: We've used Demul 0.5.8.2. for the emulation testing, and so far the only major issue it has is that some graphics show borders instead of being transparent. That doesn't happen in real console. In real console we've seen some delays with the activation of lipsynch or subtitles, which I don't know if it's our fault or if it already happened in the unmodified game.

If the patcher dumps some error, please report it back here, on this topic. The patcher will usually allow you to copy the error to the Clipboard, and also generate a log.txt file in the same folder where the application is. Upload both and send them here.

And... I'm tired as hell, we've been working on the last issues until the last minute. If I'm missing stuff, it's either on the readme or you can ask me here, as I'll be doing the English troubleshooting on this topic. Enjoy.
( EDIT: Original title was "Why What's Shenmue never got a translation attempt?")

I just dissected What's Shenmue for fun, thanks to Sizious tools:
- The subtitles script has (EDITED) 67.748 bytes of japanese text.
- The FACEs part have been directly copypasted from the Passport translation.
- All the graphics are editable.
- The small font is included and working so we have 44x44 characters per line.

Only difficulties:
- Like with the main games, editing the 1ST_READ.BIN.
- Text justification is odd. Mostly justified to the left, but sometimes centered. We can re-center it the ugly way (Adding spaces to the left)
- Any extra hacks needed: Loading screens and other small stuff. There's a presumed Japanese language changer in the game to remove.

I tried to search around this forum but with no results. So, I'm just posing the question here. Sizious made it possible, yes, so, why nobody is interested?

EDIT 2014/04/20: The project has finally started, here's the current team:
- Translation: Rakim, Switch
- Graphics Editing: BlueMue, IlDucci
- Hacking: YZB (When he can), IlDucci
- Main translation tools by the ShenTrad Team: Manic, ShenDream, Sizious

Re: What's Shenmue translation project (Got translators!)

Hey again, small status update. The translation is halfway done, with stuff already implemented such as the notebook. But I have a couple of issues I have run with.

The first one is, I pretend to release this project via PacoChan's Patcher (The same one I've used for my Shenmue I and Resident Evil 2 Spanish translations), but first I have to set the CDDAs properly. I'm a total noob when it comes to doing releases, and it seems the only one who has achieved this is HyKan. I haven't been able to make the CDDAs sound right, the farthest point I could go is getting the first track on the Press Start Button menu... But only the last half can be heard.

The other thing is... it seems the GDi I ripped from my own disk seems to differ from what's on TOSEC. My disc code is <610-7179-0133A>H1723E. The fourth value is different from what's there. Is this normal or are we looking at two versions of the same demo?

Thanks in advance.

Re: What's Shenmue translation project (Got translators!)

Thanks to FamilyGuy and HyKan's help, I solved this. Turns out I had to cut a big chunk of each track (Not even the GDi's would fit just like that) in order to match Hykan's LBA table. Now the CDDA works with MDS4DC.

Yuan's Revenge - Decensoring Shenmue II

I've been thinking on this project for a long time, and I think now it's time to make it public.

During my Shenmue II Spanish Translation, I've encountered, what I think, all the changes based on censorship for the Overseas Edition of S2:
- Baby Jesus's image on the Virgin Mary in the Moon Child Convent.
- The cassette tape's change.
- All of Yuan's references, both in voice and when asking the people of Kowloon.
- Hassan's nationality being changed from arabic to chinese, with a full clothing replacement.
- (XBOX dub) Lack of a strong chinese accent from a fellow with a red chinese dress in the Wise Men Qr. This is more a dub issue rather than a censoring issue.

Well, I've been decensoring and rewriting things for the Spanish translation... But it would be a shame if it was exclusive for Spanish, right?

So I'll be announcing right now a side project of this translation called Yuan's Revenge. Right now, this is what I've already done:
- Restoring the Moon Child Convent image on Dreamcast. Doing it on XBOX is a mystery, depending on the progress of the MT5/MT7 model handlers and if the HM7 format is identical between consoles.
http://i.imgur.com/zs1nGdDs.jpg
- Restoring the censored cassette tape and re-subbed the whole thing. It can be done on XBOX as well.
- Restoring Yuan's male japanese voices. I've made a small document on the subtitle changes for the NPCs, but maybe a Japanese translator could do a bit of a better job.
- Restoring Hassan's original clothing.
- While this is not a censorship issue, the Coca-Cola branded cans/machines are also restored.

This is what needs to be done yet:
- Find voice actors (I know some places) and redub Yuan, Hassan, the chinese guy, the censored cassette tape and other minor adjustments on XBOX.
- Edit all the existing voices to remove the "s" from the "she" parts in Yuan-based lines in the XBOX dub.
- Editing Hassan's clothing on XBOX.

The final result will be PacoChan's patcher, which means you'll need the original GDIs in Dreamcast and it will export CDI images, with a choice between undownsampled audios or downsampled for 80min/99min discs. Right now the XBOX version is on the preproduction stages but, considering there's no Default.xbe edit, I think it can export just the files, ready for FTP them into the HDD.

What do I need? Right now, people who can help testing and checking all these issues. A sound engineer/editor would be nice (I can do most of the removal stuff, but I'm busy with the translation, if nobody could help before I finish the Spanish translation, I'll be doing the editing myself).

Here's a small appetizer for all of you, courtesy of Brett "Switch" Chandler, Rock_Lee-Vk and myself:

Recently our pals at Dreamcast.es created a small web magazine, Dreamcast.es Official Magazine , with a layout almost lifted (I haven't seen the real deal so I don't know how much) from Spain's Dreamcast Official Magazine. The fun part is that the front page and two articles are about our What's Shenmue translation (Although it's heavily focused on the Spanish translation).

Talking with Switch, we've decided to translate the WS-related articles. I did the first draft, Switch did most of the proofread/polishing.

What’s Shenmue
~Translated to Spanish~

But... What is “What’s Shenmue”? (pardon the pun)

"It's a short half-hour demo, and it doesn't hold any secrets needed to play the two Shenmues, but, as I said, I wanted to go full circle with the franchise".
IlDucci

Shenmue wasn't released in Japan on the scheduled release date (July 1999), so SEGA decided to give a free heads-up from the game to everyone who had preordered it to make up for the delay on the release date.

This preview gift was named "What's Shenmue?" and was a sort of demo for what the buyers would encounter once they put Shenmue in their consoles. In this case, we're provided with an exclusive mission not included in the final game.

"What's Shenmue", or by its full name, "What's Shenmue? Find Director Yukawa" is a demo disc entirely in Japanese. Although it could be played intuitively until now, those who didn't know Japanese were not able to enjoy it completely. This changed recently because a non-official translation (fan-translation) of the disc dialogues was made for free by the following:

How to apply the patch
In order to change the demo into Spanish you'll have to download the patch that can be found at http://www.dreamcast.es and apply it to a GDI image of the original What's Shenmue disc. This will generate a MDS/MDF file that can be used in emulators, or you can burn it onto a CD in order to play it in a console.

To get the What's Shenmue GDI, you can either rip the original disc with a BBA or a SD card adapter, or download a GDI image from the Internet.

To date, the patch has only been tested with discs that contain the following codes in the inner ring of the non-printed GD-ROM side:

- 610-7179-0133A 11M1 or 11MB1 (TOSEC version)
- 610-7179-0133A H1723E

There might be more versions of the What's Shenmue disc, but IlDucci says that the patch should be compatible with every one of those.

Remember that in order to see the subtitles, we must go to Options and set Game Mode in Voices&Text (changing it from Auto to Yes) and leave Kids Mode in “Adults”.

Previews

What's Shenmue

We take the opportunity with the recent release of the Spanish translation of this Japanese demo to tell you its ins and outs.

Never before had rivers of ink been written about a Dreamcast demo, but What's Shenmue (WS from now on) was able to achieve this. Now... what exactly is What's Shenmue?

WS is a small promotional demo that SEGA gifted to those who pre-ordered Shenmue in 1999 due to the delays with its release, as a compensation for the wait. The question is, if Shenmue had been released on the expected date, would we be able to enjoy this little demo and its small exclusives? We'll never know the answer, but, you know what? I'm happy the game got delayed. That helped us enjoy an exclusive mission. Every cloud has a silver lining :)

IT WAS ONLY POSSIBLE to play What's Shenmue in Japanese because this disc was only released in Japan. That was until... now, thanks to the work of the great translator, IlDucci (and company) we've mentioned a few pages before. From now on we can fully understand each and every one of the disc's dialogues and fully enjoy this adventure.

OUR GOAL in WS is to find Sega’s president (Mr. Yukawa) within Dobuita. In order to do so, we must explore the area. We must question the inhabitants, enter shops, etc. It's a nice way to get used to Shenmue's environment.

PAGE 21

Although it is only one region (if we try to leave it, we'll get kicked back the way we came) it gives a good idea of the open world concept that Shenmue introduced.

Inside Dobuita we can carry out various actions.

WE CAN PLAY at the arcade: shooting darts, playing the slot machine...

We can also buy a Coca-Cola can on a vending machine (remember that the European version of Shenmue removed this brand from the packaging of the cans).

WE CAN BATTLE against some thugs in a QTE event... and that's as far as I can go :)

Everything gives an interesting idea of the variety of events Shenmue can offer to the player, and everything is determined by the day and hour (depending on the current hour, certain events will happen. An example is the closing hour of the shops). Remember that this is one of the strong points of Shenmue, the changes on the in-game events depending on the hour.

THE DEMO LASTS about half an hour and ends with locating Yukawa and a final QTE (don't worry, I won't spoil the ending, heh, heh). It's a bit short, but better short than nothing.

For those who are more detail-oriented, we'll say that there's stuff happening in the demo but not on the final game. We're talking about exclusive events that make this demo attractive for every die-hard Shenmue fan. The most remarkable of these events is that Ryo has the ability to crouch(!)

Ah, I'll mention that it is possible to lose in this demo, due to not finding Yukawa, losing the ending QTE or losing the battle against the local thugs. It's just another curiosity.

WS also contains four of the movies that, later on, would be in Shenmue's Passport disc, explaining game concepts. Those movies are a technical marvel, showcasing the characters in textures that are really high resolution for the time they were made.

I can't end this review without praising again the great job made by IlDucci with the translation. Thanks to him, we can play with the dialogues fully translated into English or Spanish, whichever you want. What's more, he has also created some custom covers that you can print!!

Now there's no excuse not to try this wonderful demo. It's a real delicacy for the most demanding palates. Enjoy!! :)

Famitsu Edition

There exists an alternative version of What's Shenmue named 'Famitsu Edition' that came free with the Famitsu magazine, with the only difference being an orange-colored cover. Of course, get some heavy cash ready if you want it in your collection.

Re: Shenmue I and II translated into Spanish

We've done it.

The Shenmue II fantranslation patches are now available for download, both on Dreamcast and XBOX, with a ton of decensoring and dubbing extras. I've also did a massive update to the Shenmue I translation, removing most of the limits that the lack of knowledge imposed on the Notebook and other areas.

Link to the site and to the main post.

Re: Yuan's Revenge - Decensoring Shenmue II

Yuan's Revenge project is currently being re-studied because of all the Shenmue III mess.

I don't know if it's still safe to get some actors to re-play Yuan in English.

Re: Shenmue I and II translated into Spanish

This is awesome. The work must have been huge and the love for Shenmue is wondeful.

The language used is spanish from Spain. But maybe i haven't read enough, then i would like to ask something:

Does the translation for the entire game contains words only used in Spain? Or, it's adapted to a "neutral" spanish? I'm from Mexico, so, the language as you already know, is a little... different.

Thanks in advance. And again, it's a great piece of work you've made!! Congratulations!
The translation is for Castilian Spanish (For Spain). We've used expressions from Spain, yes. Though you might wanna see Jiménez García. That fellow was mexicanized.

And just to make it clear, we've only dubbed three scenes in Shenmue II and two in Shenmue I.
- Shenmue I has the prologue scene and the ending (Departure) dubbed into Castilian and Latin American Spanish.
- Shenmue II has the prologue scene dubbed in Castilian and Latin American Spanish, the Digest Movie and Huang's tape dubbed to Castilian Spanish. Subtitles are provided for those who want to disable the dubs.

Re: Yuan's Revenge - Decensoring Shenmue II

By the way, there's one other change that was made - in the Japanese version, the baseball guy who plays darts wears a t-shirt that says 'DEATHBALL 666', which was changed in the European DC and Xbox version for obvious reasons (I forget what it says instead)
Nice catch. Here's the photo for Yama:
http://i.imgur.com/RsSBRh3.png http://i.imgur.com/nmQrQiT.png

I think this is what I can do, short-term: Making a Yuan's Revenge patch for Dreamcast, right now, it's just making a smaller version of the translation patch. Making it for XBOX still requires some extra dubbing, which, again, I'm unsure on how troublesome could it be.

Re: What's Shenmue translation project V1.0.2 UPDATED!

Ladies and Gentlemen, here's a new version of the What's Shenmue E/G/S translation, v1.0.2:

Download patch version 1.0.2

There's only two updates for this one:
- Added GDI support to the output format. Now the patcher can deliver a GDI image for its use with Disc Drive Emulators (Like GDEMU)
- Subtitle edits on the German translation.

Re: Shenmue I and II translated into Spanish

I forgot to mention... Both translation patches have got updates.

Shenmue I has the most important update as we discovered a bug that crashed the game when learning a move (Damn string limits...), among other changes.

Shenmue II's update is minor: We've reencoded Huang's tape with different bitrate parameters, fixed the bug where the patchers would not work in OS lesser than Windows 7, and we've added the Baseball Fan's uncensored texture.

I think you guys also have not heard our tape dub:

Re: Interface icons in transparent png

Here's the XBOX full interface set. They're a bit less damaged from the DC compression but still a bit compressed, so pick your choice.

The watch's textures were taken straight from the PVR data, so they look the same or worse than DC.

Re: What's Shenmue translation project V1.0.4 UPDATED!

Hello there gentlemen! The What's Shenmue patch has been updated to version 1.0.4.

The most important feature of this version is a new language: Brazilian Portuguese! Thanks to LucasPreacherOfHell for making this happen.

Every language had some minor updates with the textures (I found out that DOSPVR is less damaging than the Photoshop PVR plugin). I've also added a disc graphic with the language name in it. (Mostly for Windows Explorer and GDMENU).

Re: The quest for offline Passport access

I do remember a couple of things, mostly videos made by other people, but my hacking expertise is limited to changing text lines.

I do remember seeing some internet addresses that could be replaced or maybe even repositioned if there's some unused text we can remove, because this might need a hacked server, like the PSO one.
