Re: What are you currently playing?

Still playing a lot of sea of thieves. Despite me saying that there is little content in the game, it is still fun due to the teamplay involved. The game is ridiculously simple, but the lack of any real structure makes it a true sandbox with a shitton of replay value. I mean, hell, just the other night I decided to randomly commandeer an enemy ship and start a fleet. There is no in game system for this, it just started from me saying "You know what... I really want to take their ship." Long story short, I managed to convince an enemy crew to join us through the proximity chat. I sailed up to my old ship with the newly commandeered while yelling "DON'T FUCKING SHOOT ITS ME!" I was greeted to the entire old crew laughing their asses off at the fact that my retarded idea worked. We ended up swapping crew and I took the helm of the new ship wile an old crewmate took the helm of another. It was glorious seeing our two ships sail next to each other in the open sea.

So we ended up with a fleet of two different captains (These roles aren't even coded into the game like it is in Star Trek: Bridge Crew, but they naturally pop up due to the way the game is structured. People are really good at quickly developing a command structure in this game. Even with randos people immediately take on roles such as captain, navigator, lookout, etc... also the players tend to naturally switch stations when needed), who coordinated to take down every other ship we found on the server and steal their loot. There was even a point where we used improvised morse code to communicate with each other at a distance (every ship has lanterns you can turn on and off, and you can see them from quite a long ways off). The two crews were also able to help each other to find buried treasure since the game allows you to show your treasure maps and riddles to anyone you please (they show you this feature in the video I posted @ 3:38, you can hold the map up for anyone to see). With all the treasure we managed to steal and find, I ended up getting $20k after that play session (average haul is about $4k per voyage). If you ever wanted to RP as a pirate, this is the game for you. If you are an idiot like me who always ends up being like Captain Jack Sparrow where people follow your lead just because it ends up in hilarious situations then this game is perfect for you.

The only shit thing about commandeering enemy ships is that treasure isn't shared properly so we just split the treasure chests among ships. There is discussion on the forums about this so maybe official support will be added. I'll be fine with a system that allows someone to divide a treasure chest into two chests.

I would love to upload some of my recordings but the game is under NDA and your username appears at random spots on the screen during gameplay. I am too lazy to edit out my username and I don't wanna lose my alpha access. :(

Re: Casting a real life Shenmue film?

First of all, I think it would be a mistake to cast all Japanese actors. This thing needs international appeal, and I can't think of any Japanese actors that can really draw a serious crowd.
With that in mind, my casting would go like this:

Ryo Hazuki - Fred Savage
https://image.ibb.co/ixxHEQ/1ryofred.png
For the main character, of course you need to cast the greatest actor who ever lived, Fred Savage. You could probably even recreate the carrots scene by splicing together old footage from The Wonder Years and having him dub over it. His voice is exactly the same as it was back then, so it all works out.

Iwao Hazuki - Danny Glover
https://image.ibb.co/fbkZTk/2iwaodanny.png
Because you need a black guy.

Lan Di - Ninja from Die Antwoord
https://image.ibb.co/jHNsEQ/landininja.png
If we're gonna get Neil Blomkamp to direct this thing -- and let's face it, he's the only choice there can possibly be, what with all the robots that have to be added -- then you need to get an actor that literally only Neil Blomkamp thinks is worthwhile.

Guizhang - Kevin Hart
https://image.ibb.co/jun68k/guizhangkevin.png
Because sometimes you need two black guys.

Ine-san - Amy Schumer
https://image.ibb.co/nwriok/inesanamy.png
It always seemed to me like the developers wanted Ine-san to be like super funny, and she always had this smug attitude about herself like she thought she was hilarious.
But she wasn't. Like, not even a little bit.

Megumi - Leonardo DiCaprio
http://oi68.tinypic.com/2808dbk.jpg
One of the most adventurous actors in Hollywood. I think he'd welcome the chance to really stretch his abilities by playing a little special needs Japanese girl. We could win this thing some goddamn Oscars.

Daily Shenmue - Starting November 29th

In celebration of Shenmue III coming out next year, I'll be starting my catch up playthrough of both Shenmue I and Shenmue II. However, this time I'll only be playing an in-game day each day, no more, no less. If time skips forward for Ryo, then I am not allowed to play Shenmue until the realtime day and ingame day sync up again. Anyone wanting to join me is welcome--although I understand why it may not be super appealing of a playthrough.

Since today is the day that Iwao Hazuki died, I'll be starting today. (although there's not much to play today haha)

I'll also be keeping a personal journal entry of everything that happens in game.

Re: Shenmue 3's overall reception

It's impossible to say what with the fact we've not seen any gameplay whatsoever, but, from what we have seen in screenshots and trailers, I predict the game will sit quite comfortably in the 74-78 range on Metacritic. The more incompetent and/or bitter critics out there will take digs at the game simply because it's Shenmue and its gameplay systems differ so heavily compared to what is expected of contemporary open-world games, but hopefully , just hopefully, the more level-headed will be able to appreciate the game in regards to how it is able to stand on its own two feet where combat, the story, and the world are concerned. A true successor to the legacy.

Steam reviews, I predict, will be in the 'Very positive' bracket.

Then again, the game might turn out to be complete and utter shit, in which case it deserves to be kicked and dragged through the mud, as does any bad game.

Re: Shenmue 3's overall reception

I predict a 78% from Metacritic or around that range as well as a 7/10 from IGN simply because the Shenmue aesthetics of waiting around and part time jobs (if prevalant) will get criticised negatively but a lot of praise may arrive for story and environments just like the previous games. To get a score like 8/10 or higher is just unrealistic for Shenmue 3 since people will keep in mind it is a kickstarter (I'm not saying that they are always low scored) and the budget is not very high resulting in possible backdraws when compared to the typical 9/10 game that has a lot of money put into it. It will be very fun to see review threads here and all the opinions on the internet about the game when it arrives!

Re: Shenmue 3's overall reception

I put it at 80+ because that's around what the first two games got, so that's what I'd expect really. The game isn't for everyone and a lot of people find it boring. But most of the people who will play it will probably have played the first game. Is that stupid logic?

I agree with ShenGCH on the steam reviews, very positive.

To which part?

Florida.

I would have joked about England being a shithole country, then I remembered I have my country in my profile
This is what trump had to say when he heard abour Riku's potential emigration to America
"Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?" Mr Trump asked lawmakers on Thursday, in remarks widely reported by US media.

The friends of Ringo Ishikawa

Hello, guys. If i'm breaking some law you'll just delete this post, i suppose.

I'm currently in development of the game heavenly inspired by Shenmue and Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari. It's an open world game about japanese delinquents focused on story and small things that don't do much but matters a lot in the end (like feeding a cat in Shenmue).

So i'm just looking for players who could be interested.

Here's a greenlight trailer i made a year ago and some screenshots.

Re: Yakuza series

Just finished kiwami on legendary. With all my stats leveled up in new game plus it was less of a challenge than doing the game on normal mode except for the shooting segment, that part was pretty frustrating especially since when you lose you have to do all the fights in the restaurant beforehand.
That car chase was such a pain. Can't recall how many attempts that took me.

In other news Yakuza 4 & Yakuza 5 are now on PlayStation Now. I may be tempted to play Yakuza 4 again over the week's trial period..

Re: Yakuza series

So I started watching Rurouni Kenshin earlier (seen a few episodes years ago, but never got far), and it got me to thinking about Hokuto ga Gotoku... like, how great would it be if Sega started doing more of these games in the Yakuza mold, but with a variety of other anime franchises?
They've got Fist of the North Star covered, but Rurouni Kenshin is another that would work brilliantly, and I could probably sit here and make a whole list of others that could totally fit the bill. Seems like such a simple idea, but the basic Yakuza setup could be really multi-functional if they licensed a bunch of other stuff.
KoeiTecmo does it with their Warriors line (they've done Fist of the North Star, Berserk, and Arslan so far), so why not Yakuza? At the very least the Yakuza formula is far more conducive toward storytelling than Warriors ever has been.
Would be nice if that kind of thing happens. Just a random thought.

Re: Shenmue 1 & 2 game developers

Don't smash the panic button just yet.

The games in the collection aren't ports, they're using an emulator wrapper. Going by D3T saying they were asked to just add new features and do the shovel work to get them onto console/update the PC version, it's fairly likely they're using the same emulator SEGA have been using since last gen too (which was criticised for imperfections even back then).

In the ERA thread linked you'll find speculation Unity not playing nice with the emulator may be the issue here, actually. SEGA Forever suffered a lot of the same issues, and that was pinned on Unity.

At the end of the day, this was just a cheap and cheerful compilation collection. D3T weren't asked to write a new emulator, or port these games from source. They still deserve trust with Shenmue considering neither of the factors likely at fault here (Unity, emulation) are going to be involved in the release of I & II.

Re: The "AI Battling" Stretch Goal

I am going to be honest about this, and ive had this discussion earlier today with a few others.

You are more than free to try and get people to increase their pledges, but the Dojo as a brand will not be taking part in any campaign to try and get to "7 million".

Whilst its a nice round number, at this point in time, our focus is now to encourage sales of both the re-releases and also of course, Shenmue 3. The problem is the more copies of the game that go through the PayPal avenue risk the number of people buying the game at retail, and at this point, that's not what we need. Shenmue 4 is dependant on retail sales alone. Its been said numerous times, and if someone uping their pledge to get another copy results in them NOT buying a copy at retail then there's no way i can support that.

Crowdfunding has gotten us to where we are now with Shenmue 3, and it has indeed #savedshenmue. But its done. With additional funding from Shibuya, followed by Deep Silver, the development timescale for this game would have been locked in, and any projections for in game mechanics such as the 7 million dollar AI Battling system would have either been included, or dropped depending on those factors. With Shenmue 3 more or less a year away, i would also doubt they are going to edit the entire mechanics of a big part of the game all because there was a push at the end.

Do i think AI Battling is already in the game? Yes is do. So my advice would be to not push for a simple round figure that could jeopardise Shenmue 4, but wait until the Slacker Backer campaign is over, and then push people to buy both the re-releases as well as 3. Those retail figures are what will make the most difference.

Re: "My money!"

In the beginning of Shenmue II, did anyone else spend 499 yen out of 500 on buying up figurines before leaving the starting area?

It's not yen, is it? Been a while since I played, but I'm pretty sure he'd converted his money to HK dollars at the beginning of the game.

Also when I read the title for this topic, my first thought was actually Echigoya dying in the first Tenchu.
