Ryo and Nozomi

Obvious Shenmue One and Two spoilers.

A lot of people seem to be annoyed that Ryo never makes any kind of advances on Nozomi but I've been thinking. From my obsession with Japanese language and Japanese Culture I've learned that Public Displays of affection are not particularly common in Japan and that many people share their first kiss well after 18 years of age. (I also read a recent survey that seemed to indicate this)

What has this to do with anything?

Well, I have always considered Shenmue to authentic in realism in regards to Japan, as especially considering the time frame it takes place in and how it can be compared to other games that share a similar setting. I think that Ryo's stance on love is much like his frustratingly limited social skills (in regards to gaijin) I can understand how foreigners can be annoyed at how Ryo seems to only be able to say "I see" or "is that so?" at times. But in a Japanese mind frame, I find this to be completely normal. (From what I've gathered from my obsession anyway)

For this reason I find Ryo's reaction to Nozomi's confession, given his frustrations at the time to be quite realistic.
I also feel that Ryo share these same sensibilities when it comes to Joy. He doesn't understand the social constructs in Hong Kong and is either oblivious or very reserved towards the obvious hints that she tries to give him because it's just not common to show public displays of affection where he grew up, kissing and holding hands are both rare, especially in the 80s.

I may be wrong about all this but from what I've learned it seems to make sense the way Ryo acts and just adds to the authenticity that I so love about the game. I feel like if I were in Japan in the 80's and walking down Dobuita, I'd feel exactly how I do while playing the game.

In conclusion, I appreciate Ryo's lack of balls. :P

Japanese people, correct me if I'm wrong about any of this.

Culture Shock!

I think I've come up with I good idea, but to be sure I'll pitch it here.
In the Versus Guide books, there are "Culture Shock" sections that tell you little snippets about Japanese culture and how the differ from more western culture. I like that but I feel that it can be more complete so I'm announcing a new project that takes every single "Questionable" thing in both Shenmue games and condenses them into a large comprehensive list of Facts and history about Japan and how they relate to Shenmue. Now, even though I am kind of obsessed with Japanese culture I will need fact checkers and helpers to help complete this project. I will also need HD screen caps of certain things in the game.

Once finished I hope to release PDF, CBR, and EPUB formats to be downloaded for free online.

If anyone is interested, comment in this thread and if you have any ideas of how to improve the project please share
them!

If you would like to contribute information please do by formatting your entrees in the following order

Snack Bar : A "snack bar" (スナックバー sunakku bā), or "snack" for short, refers to a kind of hostess bar, an alcohol-serving bar that employs female staff that are paid to serve and flirt with male customers. Although they do not charge an entry fee (and often have no set prices on their menus), they usually have an arbitrary (and expensive) bill or charge a set hourly fee plus a "bottle charge". Re: Culture Shock!

Contributing:
Japanese people all bathe in Koi ponds, hence the lack of anything resembling a shower or bathtub in the Hazuki Dojo.

Chai is a member of a human subspecies that evolved as a result of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Japanese try to keep this secret within the archipelago, but that is slowly dieing with one of them having become a popular fixture on TV. http://i.imgur.com/MQVLU.jpg
The Hazuki's live on the hill in the more secluded location of town not because of their importance or wealth, but because they were shunned by the rest of the town when they first settled in. Their association with Chinese people, who are seen by right wing Japanese in the same vein as Mexicans in the US or Poles in England, had them ridiculed during most of the 60s and 70s until racial tensions gradually died down as the Shouwa Era came to a close.

Sorry for double posting but I'm planning to do some work and I'm wondering if there are sources for this info. Who is that girl?

http://i.imgur.com/wv3hJ.jpg

I hope you're just really dedicated to the bit because....

I pulled all that out of my ass. I thought the joke was obvious... Maybe I'm a better writer than I thought.

Also if you're still interested the girl is Kyouko Kanou of the famous 叶姉妹(kanou sisters). Merely a victim of obsessive plastic surgery and not a post-war Japanese mutant. As weird looking as they are these old broads are really funny on variety shows and I suggest watching if you're into that type of thing.

1. The source thing was a joke.
2. I really wanted to know who the girl was. :P

Re: Other Side of the Golden Qr.

@Spokane

The hotel is called "The Grand Hotel"

@Ryudo

With the supposed plethora of unused files on the disc that serve no purpose, I kind of find it hard to believe that disc-size was an issue.
Maybe a design choice or put strain on the DC. I'm no techie. So I was only guessing. I always wanted to go to the other side and explore the hotel. What I loved is how I could see NPC's across the street. At the time I played SII more advanced games were out but that detail stuck with me.

Re: If Shenmue HD happens

I think it'd be a good idea for Sega to create an episodic Shenmue game for several reasons.

1. It's cheaper to make.

2. They can take their time between episodes.

3. They can make more money by having different package deals as 10$ an episode or 50$ full game. People who are curious can just buy an episode rather than the full game, thus granting extra sales from those would not have bought the full game and by those who buy an episode on impulse and feel compelled to purchase for completion sake.

4. Can gauge fan reaction

An episodic, open world game with rich story and many options could do wonders for the Franchise. The games would have to all use the same engine, and fit together seamlessly, offer many locations and be as spectacular in exploration and lifestyle as the first two games, (which is exactly what it was on Dreamcast, only it used discs instead of digital downloads and they could even use discs today and enable you to install them on your console)
They could just keep releasing "maps" that offer new stories and locations to visit and each map is a separate chapter. Basically, it would be the equivalent of releasing separate discs like the original games but digitally and thus possible to explore previous areas that would be blocked if using physical media in the past. (If you have the previous episodes installed)(Think Ryo never being able to go back to Wan Chai due to disc size)

Sure, a full complete game released at once would be ideal but Sega seems to hate Shenmue and this would be a way to give the brand a chance, test the waters for better things in the future.
And most importantly (for us fans) it'd be a new Shenmue game! (For Sega) It would make them money!
There's really no reason not to do it this way as everyone would win.

Re: Japanese Live-Action Movie Recommendation Thread

Well, as for what I posted earlier

時をかかる彼女 - Toki wo Kakeru kanojo A girl drinks some time traveling serum meaning to fullfil her mothers wish and deliver a letter to an old friend.

タイヨウのうた - Taiyou no Uta - It's based on a (semi) true story. It's about Kaoru Amane who suffers from Xeroderma Pigmentosum (sunlight is dangerous to her) and plays music near the train station at night. It's a romanc emovie.

うさぎドロップ- Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop) - It's about a guy who takes in the illegitimate child of his father, whilst the other members of her family want to sent her away.

君に届け- Kimi ni Todoke - Another romance movie. It's about a girl who has a strange name and is the victim of being rumored to be bad luck and weird. She meets a guy who is actually nice to her and then some friends. It's based on an anime of the same name.

ポルノスター Pornosutaa (Porno Star) (or Tokyo Rampage in the US) - A Yakuza who likes trouble and slaying Gaijin and stealing their drugs.

I'm looking for something like インストル (Install) which, I can't watch for monetary reasons. Also can find no ddls.

Slice of Life and Coming of Age movies are what I'm interested in right now.

So, any movies that aren't over the top?

Re: Bombs in Boston

People need to stop blaming others before knowing what happened, and it was not the Saudi student. Someone attacked that guy because he was doing something "suspicious" like you know, running from a god damn explosion. The New York Post is not reliable news, they're just a tabloid that is full of dimwit racist morons, as the guy was not ever a suspect at all. NYP just makes up shit and they're run by News Corp. So, Fox News, and Rupert Murdoch, reliable? No.

But if you'd bother to research you'd know that already, in fact you could have known it right after you read it if you were paying attention because not even an hour after the report the Boston Police said it wasn't true and they didn't know where NYP were getting their info. Again, the guy was tackled for being foreign and running from an explosion at an international marathon, and was then questioned. He could have had his life ruined because of some racist idiot.

Here's a story about that http://bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/04/15/perfect-day-turns-evil/W7KQHq1NWFqukte3VQ14DJ/story.html

Not only that, here is a lot of updates that were posted as new information came that quickly shot down the NYP idicoy.

Update #1
Update #2
Update #3
Update #4

And fuck that guy that blamed Muslims. It's just despicable and disheartening. Speculation and placing blame on others before knowing the details is dumb and it gets innocent people hurt.

Re: Project: Sekai

I wouldn't call games such as Steins;Gate, Clannad, Little Busters!,and Robotics;Notes hentai... Also just because there's eroge doesn't necessarily mean it's hentai either. That's like calling any movie with nudity in it porn.

My game will feature four entirely new stories and well as four adaptations of what we already know Shenmue's origins to be. It will be released in four parts, each containing one new story and one retelling.

So, I've animated some more backgrounds (Originally captured by Ziming). Worry not, these are just .Gif versions of the animations and thus the resolution and frame-rate are seriously compromised. They're actually much better quality in-game. I could upload an HD video to youtube, but, it'd only be 1sec long and well, who wants that?

First, (WIP Golden QR at night. I'll have to redo some of this, mainly the right street. I also have to animate some lights from buildings. There's only one done in this version, and I don't think you can even tell.

http://i.minus.com/itrwOBAbXgmMm.gif

You probably can't tell but each light is very SLIGHTLY off balanced to the rest.

Second, Hazuki Dojo bathed in sunlight.

http://i.minus.com/iCFTvJWWiPd6s.gif

It may be hard to believe but this actually took me longer to do than Golden QR. (this took many hours, the former only a few) I couldn't figure out what exactly to do with the light and the clouds. Since the scene was already majorly lit, I did what I thought best, and just did a small animation, and then there's the I thought it would be weird to just have static clouds, so I tried to do something with that.

Also, I'm using GImp, (laugh, if you will) which, I'm still learning how to use actually.

Anyway, I should have another video update within a week or two or so.

What's done so far.

11 animated backgrounds
Message Box animations and design
12 Pages of script (story) that includes various branching paths.

https://mega.co.nz/#!sc4DgSpC!NhVSOXM5pmg8q7oDVczghRGWHwZ7yJaGHvklMAzAZQI

Also, instead of just redoing some of it, I'm going to try to do what Ryudo and MiTT3NZ suggested as well as completely reanimate it. Instead of only 8 frames looping, I think I'll make it 30 frames. Animating layer by layer is a bitch. xD.

BTW, anyone have any tutorials on removing objects/and ripping models from nulldc? I tried to follow the one here but there's quite a few dead links.

Re: Project: Sekai

Thanks for all the interest and replies, everyone. I'll try to address things as best as I can.

First, I have to reveal my idea and inspiration and motives for this project. Not to generalize but I think it's pretty obvious that Visual novels are popular in Japan, though not nearly as popular in the USA. This grants me a unique opportunity to give fans of Shenmue something else Shenmue related to play, and for the Japanese, something more familiar. I don't think the IP is nearly as popular in Japan as it is in Europe or the U.S., thus a Visual Novel would hopefully garner more interest than a more western style game.

Hopefully depending on the success of the project, Japanese, Europeans and the U.S would feel even more likely to want another real Shenmue game and would voice their concerns to Sega and Sega Japan (which, I personally feel may be more receptive of the idea, depending on if this project fails or not.) Sega, seeing people supporting a free fan-game might give more thought into their apparent stubbornness when it comes to Shenmue. With the right promotion, translation, and social awareness, it might (probably not) force Sega to reconsider.

As for addressing individual thoughts.

@ raymonf - I'll have to go back and have a look, I think there was some specific Shenmue model ripper. Anyway, I think I may try alternatives such as taking screenshots where there are no NPCs and then just overlaying it onto the image.

@ mue 26 - Being as I plan an episodic game, there is time for many stories. The first episode will be more of a testing ground than anything else. There will also be a beta demo that only demonstrates the UX, the retelling of the opening scene of Shenmue, paths, interactivity, and unlockables. It'll probably be only 10 minutes of gameplay.

If the first episode received well, it grants me time and indeed incentive to continue working on more interesting stories until all four are complete (and maybe even more.) I hope to distribute it globally (perhaps even someone may translate it). Anyway, the point of an episodic game is that it doesn't exactly have to be set in stone as far as the story goes, and that I believe is bonus.

Some original story idea's I've been throwing around are

Exploring how Fuku-San is taking Iwao's death and his concern over Ryo.
Exploring how Nozomi is adapting to life in Canada
An exploration of Shenhua's supernatural abilities.
A prologue side story involving Ren, Joy and Wong, before they met Ryo
A Chronicle of Iwao's journeys in China.

As you can see, none of these are trying to be a conclusion to the story or directly involve Ryo, they're all sort of open-ended so as to not drastically upset fans and such.

As for the retelling of story, I feel that there are some that just absolutely need to be adapted. Not 1:1 mind you, there needs to be familiarity yet something different. I liked the anonymous idea thrown about a while ago, and that is the script I have been working on. Maybe I'll post the first of the ten pages I've written so you all can give feed back.

@ UnHoly Bible - Thank you, I have this and it is really a great resource. I also have an offline backup copy of the entire Shenmue Neoseeker in case I don't have access to the internet. (I don't know if that's exactly legal, but I use the info for projects)

@ Ryudo - Side story involving Tom and young Ryo are very interesting to think about.

@ Rakim - A lot of info on Shenmue Gai & some Accompanying pictures. It's an entire hands-on detailing how the game works, classes, and such. Pretty cool.

As this is only a Project and not anything definitive I can't really guarantee plans won't change. But now that I've lay out my motives, and such there will be volunteers to help with the project? Art, scripts, etc. I've gotten a few pms that are quite intriguing so I'll keep my eye on that.

Let me know if any of my ideas are unrealistic and such, and I'll try to evolve if it's reasonable as I can't do everything everyone wants and ultimately I have to make the game what I think it best is. Hope you all understand. (:
