Every single model uses the passport faces as a base.

Sorry for the overload of images, I know it seems I always try to post my pics when this topic surfaces....

Bu t my point is, the excuse of old models and new tech incompatible is... well... BS.

So the real reason why they aren't using faces close to the originals is beyond my comprenhension...

You can directly patch the CDI, there is no need to extract and recompile it.

Just drop the .cdi into an hex editor find and replace the values and you are good to go.

The obsession with clutching to the passport models is ridiculous considering Ryo never actually looked like that through all our hours actually *playing* the game. It's ruinous and warps expectations into unrealistic territory.

It was a moon-shot at realism on Dreamcast, but that's it. As good as they were then, they fall short immensely on modern standards of realism, and aren't stylised enough to look like an art style decision.



No one wants realistic characters, Shenmue is more about stylized charecters, I don't see Why they can't atempt to use similar aesthetics, no one is asking for Realistic characters, but for charecters that remotely resemble to the one they are atempting to cosplay...

Actually basic facial features of this new Ryo are mostly identical to the passport one, yet, they fail to match its aesthetics.

Yes Dreamcast Ryo never looked like the passport during normal gameplay, yet it didn't look like the continuous abominations we are getting, so.... If we have to choose one..

I won't get tired of repeating the same, passport model quality is nothing unreachable, and they still look fenomenal even today, not AAA level, but quite serviceable

Ryo animations tests in Unreal Engine 4.

As the tittle says.

I've been toying exporting the 3D model I use for my renders into Unreal engine 4 testing some animation and learning how the engine works,

It is a very Basic test, but it shows how passport Ryo would look in a modern engine, I did it just for fun, and prove the the model can actually look quite good when thrown in to a modern engine, it lacks facial riggin or animation ( that reminds me of something ... xD)

I had some problem importing materials to UE4, so you will see some jankiness in some speculars but whatever.

The more I think about it, the less I think it will be released.

It needs to be a remake, or nothing, not only because that's what I want, but realeasing an HD version or direct port would cause them more trouble than anything, I am saying this after hacking both Shenmue and Shenmue 2 to display in widescreen.

Many of you may have noticed already, but during many cutscenes, characters that weren't supossed to be seen while playing in 4:3 aspect ratio, are standing still on the corner of the screen while in 16:9, and then they start moving when they are supposed to be visible.

Examples, when Ryo meets Megumi for the first time, you can see in 16:9 how he is frozen until he is supposed to be seen, then he starts moving.

In Shenmue 2 the guy that takes you a photo when you arrive to Hong Kong will teletransport himself and freeze to the right corner of the screen


When you meet the Poison Brothers for the first time, Joys motorcycle is parked on the left of the screen, magically the next frame she is riding it.


Land Di is hidden behind a wall when eveyone is in Ren's hideout and Yuanda Zhu shows you the "map"

When ryo reads the letter for the first time, it is flying towards his hand, the black bars were supposed to hide this. etc etc.



This is aceptable because we are hacking the game to do things it wasn't suposed to be doing, and those things werent suposed to be seen, but releasing an HD port in 2017 showcasing that.... that makes me think that they will go the easy route and release them in 4:3.... that's why it needs to be a remaster and not a port, among many other things.

Shenmue Ultrawidescreen (21:9) running on a real Dreamcast,

Video was captured from My Dreamcast conected to a VGA2HDMI box, then conected to my Xbox One streaming to windows I then recorded using Bandicam and finally recompressed to keep the 21:9 aspect ratio since the source video was 16:9 on top of that the youtube compression.... lol

So the quality isn't the best possible actually it introduced quite a lot of stuttering and artifacts not present during direct gameplay, but you get the Idea, it is quite impressive seeing it running on the real thing.

In the whole 40 minutes gameplay there are only 2 times when the games lags, mostly in the intro.

I've seen some videos on youtube where you modified the game to run at 21:9 Ultrawide.

Can you tell me how you achieved that? I'm assuming it's also with hex editing?


Do you have a 21:9 monitor?

If you are interested, I can post the orresponding code to make the game 21:9.

It should run fine on emulators, but I guess It may be too much for the Dreamcast to handle.

Shenmue 2 on CXBX-R

For those of you unaware, there is an original Xbox emulator called CXBX-R, witch is making greaet progess as of lately.

Not so long ago it started getting ingame with so many games, and one of them is Shenmue 2 for the original Xbox.

I leave a video of the current status, albeit yet unplayable ( it does not recognize the controls) it looks promissng.

You'll need to hex edit the Xbe in order to let the game get rid of the black overly.

Select Shenmues .xbe

Concerns about Shenmue HD.

I have many but there is one that has hitted me hard with the video announcement.

Some of you may remember that I did some Widescreen hacks for Shenmue I & II, while I was at it I noticed, that during some custcenes, since characters aren't supposed to be seen they are frozen until they enter the supposed "viewable" area or they just simply pop out from nowhere or in some cases they just do some ramdom animations.

This happens a lot during Shenmue I and II, from the video below I've noticed that every single scene that corresponds to a cutscene its cropped to 4:3, so instead of tweaking the game they are doing the poorest and fastest of the ports.

My expectations are really low, even the official screenshots that have been posted on STEAM look worse than some emulations shots we all have been seen here.

Don't get me wrong I am happy that the games are getting a new life, but I guess SEGA's porpuse is to somehow reignite (no pun intended) the franchise but with such a poor job they will achive the opposite, and only us the hardcore fans will buy this.

You can see the same scene twice one with her ingame model the other one is exactly like the HD trailer, none is the same as the final retail version, that is another of the concerns I wanted to talk in the thread I created.

While I agree, the Xbox version looks stunning emulated at 4k.

It already looks better than the HD port imho.

I just can't justufy 99% of the choices they've made with this re-lelease, let's call it that way instead of "HD"

If its true that they are working with source code I don't see a single reason why they are taking so many wrong decisions.

Specially the one related to resolution, But I see lots of people defending the direction d3t has taken with this port, I just can't believe it.... as much as I love Shenmue, I'm incredibly sad with this re-release.

People defending the lack of resolutions higher than 1080p arguing that it is not necessary saddens me, specially when we have seen tons of screenshots of emulated S1 and S2 at crazy resolutions and they look awesome, specially on 4k panels..

The bad audio quality, the lack of passport... I just can't...

Then the artistic vision about 16:9 cutscenes.... I mean it's more a technical constrain of the time than an artistic vision, and if that werent the case, and they are just trying to preserve the original vision...I don't Thinks Yu's vision was to see S2 cutscenes this way.

I don't care if I get hated by my opinion about what I think about this port, but they just couldn't do the simplest of the things like swapping Ryo's texture jacket in Shenmue 1 to use the higer resolution one from the xbox version ( wtch in return is the Passport texture for Ryo's Jacket), something that simple jet they didn't care.

Right now I am just as sad as mad about this, I should've relaxed before writing this post but the amount of posts defending such bad choices from d3t is driving me crazy.

Just to be clear, I am happy the games are getting re-released and we can play them on modern systems and can be enjoyed by modern audiencies but I've would preferred something....

Is this frame interpolation or native 60fps? Your post and video description don't make it clear.

This is not framerate interpolation, it is running at 60 fps.


Nope, clearly not with my current of knowledge (or lack of) on this.

The timer is simply one of the values to change - in Shenmue I, it's as simple as adding 1/8 second to the in-game clock every frame instead of 1/4 second (note, I don't actually know the units used in the engine, but it's this kind of substitution).

That's nice, but did you ever figure out fixing NPCs etc.? It might help to use the PAL version and see what changes between 50Hz and 60Hz modes.

Yes, NPC's animations can be slowed down or speed up, same for cutscenes animations and camera movement during cutscenes, it is a collosal task though, I am sure that what I am tweaking are return values instead of the main instruction, anyway I've patched it in to Shenmue I iso though.

The same can be done with Shenmue II
