I made a simple patch that makes this new & improved hack much easier to apply without the need of manually editing any files:

This is only for PAL GDI version of Shenmue.

1- Download & extract the patch zip from this link .
2- Copy track06.bin from each original GDI disc into the correct extracted "Disc#" folder (e.g. track06.bin from original disc 1 GDI folder into the extracted Disc1 folder).
3- Copy track07.bin from original GDI Passport disc into the extracted Passport folder.
4- Run patch.bat.
5- Copy track06.bin from the correct "Disc#/Fixed" folder back to GDI disc folder (e.g. track06.bin from Disc1/Fixed folder back into original disc 1 GDI folder).
6- Copy track07.bin from Passport/Fixed folder back into the original GDI Passport folder.
7- Play & Enjoy ...

Note: Always backup your original files.

We are doing the release as a patcher and not as a full image because of, more than legal issues, my personal policy as a romhacker/fantranslator. I'd like to keep things small and manageable. People who have the original GD-ROM and the SD Card Adapter should have no problems dumping their disc into a GDI image (.BIN or .ISO makes no difference), but I know this site doesn't go against releases, so: I know it's a bit hard finding a GDI image online, but it's possible. If you folks are going to do a full release, I know I can't stop you so I'd just ask you to do not make profit out of us.

That said, let's go to the details: The patcher has been tested with the following discs:
- 610-7179-0133A 11M1 o 11MB1 (TOSEC Version)
- 610-7179-0133A H1723E.

Both of those are the Blue Disc versions, any other Blue Disc or the Famitsu releases have not been tested . Should be fine if the data tracks are identical (We're fiddling with the audio tracks, but we're not needing an exact equivalent of them, which seems to be the biggest difference between versions).

And now the specifics. All the menus, texts and subtitles have been fully translated into English, Spanish and German. The patcher is multi-language, so you should be able to select your language there. The process lasts around 10 minutes or so. The patcher could be a great example that, with a little modification, we could have a Shenmue modding tool for small mods (Such as the Forklift one, bigger stuff like Undubs won't have that of a meaning).

The patcher takes a GDI image and turns it into a MDS/MDF image file that should run on a real hardware or in emulator. It has a dummy file for 700MB full size, all the CDDA tracks have been preserved thanks to the previous research by HyKan, and we've got a sortfile for reordering stuff (We've moved towards the inner part beta/unused stuff that's around). It's not the best optimization but it can be improved. Nothing is ripped or downsampled.

We've translated a couple of extra needed graphics here and there, such as the "Closed" signs in the shops that are not available for the demo (like Tomato Convenience Store), Yukawa's Business Card or the poster from the ending scene. There's a couple of things I'd like to improve in a possible future release, but for now, we've done all we could. The rest is like it was in the original game.

Some troubleshooting: We've used Demul 0.5.8.2. for the emulation testing, and so far the only major issue it has is that some graphics show borders instead of being transparent. That doesn't happen in real console. In real console we've seen some delays with the activation of lipsynch or subtitles, which I don't know if it's our fault or if it already happened in the unmodified game.

If the patcher dumps some error, please report it back here, on this topic. The patcher will usually allow you to copy the error to the Clipboard, and also generate a log.txt file in the same folder where the application is. Upload both and send them here.

And... I'm tired as hell, we've been working on the last issues until the last minute. If I'm missing stuff, it's either on the readme or you can ask me here, as I'll be doing the English troubleshooting on this topic. Enjoy.
( EDIT: Original title was "Why What's Shenmue never got a translation attempt?")

I just dissected What's Shenmue for fun, thanks to Sizious tools:
- The subtitles script has (EDITED) 67.748 bytes of japanese text.
- The FACEs part have been directly copypasted from the Passport translation.
- All the graphics are editable.
- The small font is included and working so we have 44x44 characters per line.

Only difficulties:
- Like with the main games, editing the 1ST_READ.BIN.
- Text justification is odd. Mostly justified to the left, but sometimes centered. We can re-center it the ugly way (Adding spaces to the left)
- Any extra hacks needed: Loading screens and other small stuff. There's a presumed Japanese language changer in the game to remove.

I tried to search around this forum but with no results. So, I'm just posing the question here. Sizious made it possible, yes, so, why nobody is interested?

EDIT 2014/04/20: The project has finally started, here's the current team:
- Translation: Rakim, Switch
- Graphics Editing: BlueMue, IlDucci
- Hacking: YZB (When he can), IlDucci
- Main translation tools by the ShenTrad Team: Manic, ShenDream, Sizious

Re: Shenmue I & What's Shenmue Widescreen Iso/Hex patch

I made another patch for What's Shenmue, this will apply the new widescreen hack by Esppiral without the need of manually editing any files:

This is only for the GDI version of What's Shenmue patched with the latest English Translation v1.0.4 :

1- Download & extract the patch zip from this link .
2- Copy track09.bin from original GDI disc into the extracted "WShenmue_E" folder.
3- Run patch.bat.
4- Copy track09.bin from "WShenmue_E/Fixed" folder back into the original GDI folder.
5- Play & Enjoy ...

Note: Always backup your original files.

Re: Shenmue I & What's Shenmue Widescreen Iso/Hex patch

I think I found which address needed a bigger value:
Render Fix........: 2C0941A4, float, 1
Instead should be thought as a Draw Distance:
Render Fix........: 2C0941A4, float, 70
Effectively draws geometry at distance (shadows too it seems), depending on the value.
Here's a comparison (there's more details added than the 2 boxes I selected):

Value at 35
http://i.imgur.com/CDndZ7K.png

Value at 40
http://i.imgur.com/MWj052f.png

You can see the difference in shadows too. I am now using 70 as a value but am not sure what would be the appropriate value since it is static instead of dynamic like it would be when changed by the game. But it seems to solve the issue I had with the walls and store front not being rendered until up close. Have to test more though.

Re: Shenmue I & What's Shenmue Widescreen Iso/Hex patch

Hi I bring you an hex fix to patch a Shenmue I 1ST_READ.BIN/ISO/GDI/CDI.

This hex hack will make Shenmue display in Widescreen aspect ratio without clipping or glitches unlike NullDC extra geometry option or previous action replay codes, it will basically render the extra geometry necessary for 16:9 TV's.

The hack works great on emulators, as do on a real Dreamcast.

SHENMUE, E MK-5105950, V1.00120001005

So with an hex editor find and replace the following values.

Value 1
Find
CCCCCC3D AAAAAA3F

Replace
CCCCCC3D 398EE33F

203F090C 8BC78AD4 FFE55224 51145214

Following Esppiral's breakthrough, here's the same for other versions, just different for the 1st "render fix", which is actually the unlocker code that prevents the game from dynamically updating the ranges for clipping and draw distance:

To make it easier to patch your images, whether you're using a lite version (for 700MB CD-R) or the bulkier (untouched) GDRom rips, you can use the script that I uploaded here: https://mega.nz/#F!L4xAUTCB!dz3QkSV7WnkF8w8XGelfoA

Just unzip the file anywhere on your disk, then simply drag & drop each of your track06.bin files, from each of the 3 game discs, over the script named DRAG track06.bin HERE.bat . This will patch the EUR, USA or JAP images and also create a backup just in case.

Shenmue - 360º Panoramas

I'm playing around with panorama software and thought it would be interesting to try and stitch together Shenmue panoramas. It turns out that it is much harder to accomplish than in most 3D games, where you can control the camera steadily. Nevertheless, here's one test that didn't turn out as disastrous as the previous ones:

Hazuki Residence's front yard

The most useful camera mode is zoom mode but it has a few issues of it's own. For one it zooms in and locks onto objects of interest (none on this angle fortunately). The other issue with this camera mode is when you point the camera towards the ground it starts zooming in much further than on other angles.

The normal camera mode is worse though. With normal camera, even though you can make Ryo invisible and make it look as an FPS view, the camera rotation is limited to something like 180º and besides the camera zooms in when reaching it's limits. Rotating the character itself is also not good enough for two reasons, one is that it's limited to the X axis, the other is that the player moves a bit around it's own X axis which changes the angle enough to screw the final result.

If anyone knows any trick/code to rotate the camera axis steadily, that would help make awesome panoramas.

I've been dreaming Shenmue in next-gen for years but the Ryo's jacket is the only thing I always failed to imagine in modern graphics without Ryo looking laughable. Dreamcast's Ryo was cool but Shenmue 3? Good luck to the artists.

Re: Kickstarter Update #65: Dev room update

You think it will match AAA quality in terms of depth and story?
Depth isn't something I automatically associate with AAA games. There are lots of games that are AAA that are as shallow as a puddle.

EDIT: Should probably address the Shenmue III-specific part of the question too:

We won't really know until we play it for ourselves, but a lot of the new gameplay elements being introduced should complement existing mechanics, and deepen the game as a whole.

Shenmue 1 & 2 HD maps (WIP)

That's something I wanted to do since a long time...
After some research, mainly on the Dojo forums, I found good user made maps for Shenmue 1 & 2.

I have yet to find good maps for Kowloon but in the meantime, here are Shenmue 1 maps and most of Shenmue 2 maps.

Credits for maps source goes to Radar, psychokamui (Dojo) and Lan Di Sama (neoseeker): http://www.shenmuedojo.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=46077

Re: Shenmue I, Shenmue II & What's Shenmue Widescreen HEX ha

FINALLY, after a very bizarre problem that i couldnt solve involving overlapping on Demul with the widescreen hack activated, Ziming sent me gdi images with the widescreen hack preloaded.

And it looks absolutely immense!! I didnt think it was that big of a deal, and it wouldnt enhance my gaming experience of Shenmue on an emulator, but boy was i wrong! Mr357 was saying to me about how circles appeared more "oval" shaped and things like that, and i could sort of see it, but i wasnt that fussed since i wasnt able to activate it either way. But now, i just love it and i have to say a massive thank you to Esppiral for this. I will thank you again during all of the weekly playthroughs on Twitch, as well as Ziming setting up a link to here. Here are some comparison shots with some thoughts:

https://68.media.tumblr.com/3f70f8ed9465ff913ec667822a45812a/tumblr_onhom5RzBv1vilcqco5_1280.png
WITHOUT hack activated

https://68.media.tumblr.com/655b760522d550d6624cf22ceeb617d8/tumblr_onhom5RzBv1vilcqco6_1280.png WITH hack activated

When playing this in a 16:9 aspect on a 50" LCD TV you can see how much more sleek and slim the entire picture looks, as well as how Ryo hasnt been eating pies all the live long day. It looks so much more closer to its original than it ever has done.

https://68.media.tumblr.com/9653827771db5b035d39b89995c6cebc/tumblr_onhom5RzBv1vilcqco1_1280.png

https://68.media.tumblr.com/f13b0d018a000a4e4dc7f22ec89d468a/tumblr_onhom5RzBv1vilcqco2_1280.png
WITH hack activated

I dont think the pictures do this one justice, but the notebook also looks far more thin, and less as intrusive on the screen. It looks as if its standing more upright and less stretched, distorting the image. This in return make the text look a lot more neat and well presented.

https://68.media.tumblr.com/fd3675c700c55a6783c373fe0a6e6e10/tumblr_onhom5RzBv1vilcqco3_1280.png
WITHOUT hack activated

https://68.media.tumblr.com/13404db0efa832cd41eb74352e2530bf/tumblr_onhom5RzBv1vilcqco4_1280.png
WITH hack activated

The final image is the one where people had been saying for weeks during the streams where you can see the purpose and difference this at its best. Circular objects go from looking oval shaped and stretched, to perfectly circular, and again, just make the game feel and look much more neat and sleek.

I know the pictures may not look much different, or even that much of a big deal, but trust me, when playing the games it feels miles different, and if anyone is running Shenmue through an emulator in widescreen mode then you need this hack.
Thank you again Esppiral!

Romanization of Locations and Names

Question:
In Shenmue 2, is the English transcription of the Chinese places and people written in the pronunciation of Cantonese or Mandarin?

My Answer:
Locations in Wan Chai and Kowloon are written in Cantonese pronunciation. (But, why the exception with Example#4?)
Character names are written in Mandarin pronunciation. Why?
The language of Hong Kong (where Wan Chai and Kowloon are) is Cantonese, so it is prudent of Suzuki-san to use the romanization of such when showing which streets and shops Ryo is walking in; to be realistic for English gamers. Of course I can understand that natural logic, however, since I've only just begun studying Mandarin, can someone help me understand why Suzuki-san would use Mandarin pronunciation for character names in Shenmue2?

LOCATIONS :

Example 1:
文武公園
Man Mo Park

In Mandarin: wen
In Cantonese: man
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%96%87

In Mandarin: wu
In Cantonese: mou
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%AD%A6

公園
In English: park

Example 2:
恩田楼
Yan Tin Apartments

In Mandarin: en
In Cantonese: jan
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%81%A9

In Mandarin: tian
In Cantonese: tin
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E7%94%B0

In English: building (of two or more stories)

Example 3:
点心街
Dimsum Quarter

In Mandarin: dian
In Cantonese: dim
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dim_sum

In Mandarin: xin
In Cantonese: sam
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%BF%83

In English: street

Example 4:

In Mandarin: dou
In Cantonese: dau

In Mandarin: jiang
In Cantonese: zoeng

Re: Shenmue I, Shenmue II & What's Shenmue Widescreen HEX ha

You forgot to give credit where it's due.
https://twitter.com/Shenmue_Dojo/status/868251930228928512

*Slight correction: S4pph4rad from assembler games originally found the 16:9 exploit. Esppiral developed it further for both Shenmue games providing us instructions how to patch it in this topic.
They're different methods of doing the same thing, Esppiral's work isn't really based on mine.

My initial approach for Widescreen hacks was to crush the horizontal camera field of view without changing vertical so that you see more on each side of the screen. This caused minor pop-in on the sides in Shenmue 1 & 2 because the game knows when an object would normally not be visible anymore and doesn't draw it.

Esppiral's first approach was to zoom the in-game camera further out then stretch the vertical field of view so the top & bottom of the screen still end up in the same place they were originally. The game engine knows about the zooming, his approach eliminated pop-in. Since the zoom is a game engine feature though, it didn't affect cutscenes and since the vertical stretching was still there the black bars had to be disabled so you could see the same amount of detail as before.

I'm not sure what approach he took for the Hex patch, I never got around to figuring out why the codebreaker wasn't able to perform the same patch in memory yet. I suspect it's permanently modifying the game logic that calculates the camera parameters. The patches are in the executable range and I've done other codes that patch the executable like the one to let you start a new Shenmue 2 EU game from a US Shenmue 1 save file, so it's still a mystery why his latest patch isn't working. I'm getting closer to finishing up on other projects that I promised to do, so hopefully I can go back to figuring out how to get these working with an unmodified copy of the game.

Random note: the 4's are A's, the previous Assemblergames forum software was disallowing my username when I signed up even though it wasn't taken. I tried to get the owner to change it when I made a rather reasonable donation over a year ago, but he ignored my request.

Re: YSNET officially announce the delay of Shenmue 3.

I've put up a blog post about the announcement on Phantom River Stone:
http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/06/shenmue-3-rescheduled-for-2018.html

I made a slightly fuller translation of Yu's comment from the video. The official captions are fine so far as meaning but I felt they lost a little bit of the nuance.

Helping London Fire Victims

Hi guys,

Just wondering if any of you guys live near London UK, and would be happy to help out with the London fire victims (esp. children) somehow as a "Team Shenmue"? Maybe can bring some consoles and games along to make their lives happier?

I'll get in touch with local community centres and see what we can help with, but personally I'll look to go after work once or twice during the week.

Cheers!

Kickstarter Update #69: June Report

Greetings Everyone.

First things first,

We would like to express our gratitude for the many comments we received on our previous report. From constructive criticism to kind words of encouragement, we were touched by every single one of your comments. Yu Suzuki and the entire Shenmue III Team are more determined than ever to bring to the Shenmue III that will live up to your expectations.

gamescom 2017 plans!

We will be attending Germany's mid-August gaming event gamescom 2017! While we are still working out the details with our partners, we plan to show our newest movie clips, share the latest updates and even make some new announcements.

Title logo change

Yes, Shenmue III has updated its title logo. Taking your comments into consideration, Yu Suzuki and the team gave the title logo another hard look and decided to update the logo with this design.

Re: Kickstarter Update #69: June Report

Seeing the new official logo is a relief, even though I knew they had said they wouldn't be sticking with the temporary one. I was just like, what is taking them so long? Why do they keep using this one? Just for the record I think the whole alleged issue with young people not knowing how to read cursive writing is absurd. It's not like a completely different alphabet, just slight variations of the letter shapes. You can learn it in an hour. Then again I am into wildstyle graffiti so cursive is a pretty simple style compared to that.

The new models show a lot of great personality even in a t-pose. They're going to be bursting off the screen with charisma when they're textured and animated!

Re: The quest for offline Passport access

I'd be interested in looking into it too. Does anyone know of a good free SH4 disassembler? The Demul one is too painful...
dcdis v0.4a by Lars Olsson

It's a free command line disassembler that dumps the entire 1ST_READ.BIN into a text file. I used it to come up with the hack to import US save files into Shenmue 2 EU. I also used the source code to write the SH-4 plug-in for Hopper Disassembler. (But that's not free)

Edit: It seems to be hard to find 0.4, lots of sites have 0.3.3a. Here is a direct link to 0.4 on his website:

Re: The quest for offline Passport access

Update! I've managed to make a small hack of the 1ST_READ.BIN file to skip the dial-up check on the Passport disc.

Now the various Passport disc screens can be accessed from the main menu, without needing to simulate dial-up.

Most of the screens display at least some images and other data, although there's obviously no online data displayed.

I'll put a post soon on the Phantom River Stone blog with the details.

The quest for offline Passport access

Great efforts have been made to exchange the dub and increase the visual fidelity of Shenmue, things that can greatly enhance the experience. One thing that is part of the experience but often easily overlooked is the Passport Disc and there is something that should be tackled to increase the enjoyment of Shenmue even more.

The reason why it's often ignored is as everyone knows it's too damn hard to access all it's neat still functional on disc contents and features. Things like long term weather forecast, status on the kitten or trading slot house prizes with Oishi for animal capsule toys, stuff that is actually aiding playing the game. Other stuff like the online manual, character database and an incredibly in depth statistic on what you've done in the game.

What we need is some kind of hack that either tells the game that it's on an active dial up connection or just remove the check alltogether. I've been thinking about this countless times but have no idea where to start to look for a solution. This is where brainstorming and some serious work should start to be put into. There must be a way...

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

This does not look like Ryo or Shenhua.

This looks more like Ryo's plastic filipino cousin and Shenhua's plastic french auntie.

They need to just use the CG original models.

And why did they replace the original logo AGAIN ?

Stick to the originals.

Environments look good thus far, though.

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

I find the models very ugly from an aesthetic standpoint. Compared to the original series and compared to modern games. Im not sure why matching the passport models should be such a fantasy.

Re: The quest for offline Passport access

I've made an easy patch for the PAL GDI version that contains the widescreen fix by Esspiral in addition to this fix, so you can apply both fixes without manually editing any files.

http://i.imgur.com/GTGEbsa.png

http://i.imgur.com/gE2xoqI.png

http://i.imgur.com/1vhKCdr.png
To apply the patch:

1- Download this zip file and extract it.
2- Copy track07.bin from your PAL Shenmue Passport GDI disc into the "Passport" folder you'll find when you extracted the zip file.
3- Run patch.bat.
4- Copy track07.bin file from "Passport\Fixed" folder back into the GDI folder of the Passport disc.
5- Enjoy the extra content in widescreen.

I don't have the widescreen fix code for the US version, so if Esspiral can dig it up, I'll provide an easy patch for the US GDI version as well if needed.

Thanks Switch for this great finding.

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

Feedback isn't necessarily bad.

But the way things have been phrased in this thread have been, well, unconstructive - to put it lightly. During the first ten or so pages at least; although cooler heads and largely more nuanced opinions have surfaced since.

I don't think it's fair to say just one side is acting out of passion either. Extreme reactions, positive and negative, have come from the same place.

Nothing too special. Used the existing parts on the model and made a few minor adjustments. I think it looks respectable enough for a quick dick around in Photoshop, and that the new model itself is largely on-track for getting where it needs to be.
