Re: Kickstarter Update #65: Dev room update

It's the little things that get me excited the most, such as we will indeed have a notebook, we will have Excite QTE 3 and QTE Fighter retextured, a watch always in the corner....

Not only all those "Shenmue", touches but if some of you remember, i went into detail about the conversation in Japan with Yu about colours and how he was looking to obtain that "Shenmue" look. When i look at that warehouse shot, with the arcade cabinets, i cannot emphasise it enough how that's my absolute favourite screenshot we have seen in an update. Seriously, just look at it. Look at the textures on the warehouse door, the design of the arcade, the positioning of them (in the back of some dingy warehouse), the colour pallette and how it does indeed feel wet and you can feel it through the screen. It looks like an unused screenshot from Shenmue 2 due to all of these aspects alone.

As for E3, PSX was a stark reminder of how plans can change. We were told straight up what was happening at PSX and obviously those plans changed over the course of a 10 week period. We don't know if there are HD remakes even in development, we don't know if this game will indeed be delayed etc, but my stance is quite simple. I will get beyond hyped for E3 like i did PSX and i don't care at all if there's another no show. Why? Because every event like this is worthy of getting super hyped about, since we now have a legitimate reason in that Shenmue 3 is very real. It's been a 2 year celebration for me, trying to be positive and come up with ideas to help Shenmue. I will never apologise for trying to be positive all the time, and i am sure some people may get sic of it, but i will never understand people complaining about character models, logo fonts and designs, game elements not being up to scratch.... Shenmue 3 is real and long may the fun updates and hype around gaming events continue because one day, all of this will be over and we would give anything to go back to these times.

Re: Kickstarter Update #65: Dev room update

Maybe you guys are forgetting that only one person did an excellent job making Ryo in a short period of time. This person is nokon kids and he is now working with Suzuki team, can you imagine what they can do all together? How couldn't they do a good job with more people, knowledge and budget? No way! I am too confident in this team, they'll blow everybody away when they show their first trailer for sure.

Be patient and trust in Yu.

They only show us dated material, Suzuki has always been very secretive with his work.

Re: December 2017 is fastly approaching!

To be honest, even if they manage to meet the targeted release date, I would much prefer a 6 month delay for optimization and polishing.
There is too much at stake for the Shenmue Series to fail the launch with a glitched/bugged game like Mass Effect Andromeda seems to be.

That's where Shenmue 1&2 remasters in 2017 would come handy... it would ease the pressure on YsNet for those additional "dev" month.

Re: December 2017 is fastly approaching!

Mass Effect Andromeda is definitely yet another good example that you can't ship a buggy game and expect players not to notice the defects as a result, but there are more reasons than just development time that it came out like that.

Andromeda had close to 5 years in development by most accounts I can find, but there were numerous staffing issues with project leads leaving development, engine and tools problems going from UE3 to Frostbite, and an unscrupulous publisher like EA who shoved the game out the door before the end of their fiscal year without a care about the state of the game.

That's more why Andromeda came out like it did (and why it would still be very flawed even if bug-free), and less just a matter of needing more time in the oven.

Thankfully YSnet and Shenmue III appear in a much better position on numerous fronts.

I guess my point is that even if Shenmue III releases in December 2017 as planned it doesn't automatically mean that they're releasing it as unfinished or compromised.

Re: Cédric Biscay interview by ActuGaming.net

Full translation (Probably not as accurate as it would be the other way round).

Q: Right now, you are producing Shenmue 3, which is still in development. How did things go with Sega and Sony to finally achieve this?

Cédric Biscay :To be fair, I would say it was possible in the first place thanks to the original author, Yu Suzuki. I know him very well and met him several times. At first, it was impossible to seriously consider a sequel to Shenmue 2, because the Licence owners (SEGA) didn't want to hear about it. Over time, we (Shibuya Productions) and Yu Suzuki wanted to work together on a game. So we launched a project who could not be completed in the end. At the same time, the situation about Shenmue 3 changed and Shibuya Productions decided to produce it. It's also at this time that we chose to work with crowdfunding, in order to check if the Community (fan base) was large enough and if it could help us funding the game.
Ultimately, the decision to make Shenmue 3 comes from Yu Suzuki and Shibuya Productions. Of course, SEGA allows us to use the licence, since they are the owners of the Shenmue franchise. Actually, Sony comes in a second phase, once they saw that everything was secured, that fundings were provided to support the project.
They (Sony) helped us a lot in terms of communication, in particular during E3 (2015) in Los Angeles, when we did the big announcement. And then of course, they will soon participate actively with the game marketing.

Q: So, Shenmue 3 will come out for PC and PS4, right?

Cédric Biscay : That's right, still planned for PC & PS4.

Q: And for Xbox One ? It seems to me they were disagreements on the matter?

Cédric Biscay : Not specifically disagreement, it's more that Microsoft showed late interest in having Shenmue 3 compared to Sony. Obviously, it's easier to want something when everything is easily accessible. We must remember that way before E3 in Los Angeles, everybody was thinking "Well, Shenmue 3 will never come out, it is a bit of a holy grail" or "the first two games didn't sell well enough so nobody will be interested in Shenmue 3". Truth is, from the moment we decided we would bypass/avoid those obstacles, a lot more people showed interest in being part of the adventure.

Q: Since we talk about Shenmue 3, do you have some exclusive news for us? Release date or story elements for example, etc...?

Cédric Biscay : It's not the right time for exclusive news. I'm always surprised that people ask me on a regular basis about the release date because actually, we gave one right from the start and it hasn't changed to this day. It's April 15 right? To this day, Shenmue 3 is still planned for a December 2017 release date. The situation can evolve but there are no contradicting elements at the moment. In any case, we are not running late with development. It doesn't mean we cannot encounter last-minute hitch or whatever. Anyhow, to this day, the development team didn't report any problem to me.

Q: There is also a rumour about HD remasters of the first two Shenmue and apparently, they should come out this year. Do you know if they will really come out this year? Real facts or fiction ?

Cédric Biscay : First of all, ever since the beginning of the project, this is what we would like to happen. Apparently, it’s something SEGA wants too. It’s only my personal opinion but there’s every chance that SEGA has an interest for those remasters, especially considering all the hype surrounding Shenmue 3. So, I cannot officially confirm the remasters, since I don’t work at SEGA, but it seems logical to me that those games come out eventually. What we would really like to see though, is those games released before Shenmue 3 comes out. This would help us a lot with the marketing but would also bring new players to the Series, because to be fair, start a Saga with the third episode isn’t very cool. If people have played the remasters first, it would be much more fun.

Q : About Shenmue 3 gameplay. Is it going to reach a wide audience, that is to say those who already know the franchise and the new comers ?

Cédric Biscay : That’s what we aim for. That’s what we included with Yu Suzuki in the game. Actually, what we really don’t want, is disappoint the fans. This is essential. And we don’t want to cut our self off from the gamers, this is as simple as that. Therefore, we try to balance things for everybody to be happy but not by making the game hard. It’s essential to keep everybody happy in the true sense of the word. We don’t want to diminish aspects to please others. We want everybody to be happy with the game, this is our goal.

I didn't translate the rest of the interview, since it's not Shenmue relevant.

Re: "Unlike Shenmue II it won't use the Virtua engine."

A'ight, my take:

R.E combat.

Yu has said for a while Shenmue III's controls would be simplified-

- but before people start losing their shit, that's not synonymous with dumbing down the gameplay. In fact, Yu has talked about other complexities like strategy, physics and environment interactions, breaking up groups of enemies into more manageable pockets, etc. It seems like Yu will be asking players to fight more with their heads rather than their fingers, if you get my meaning.

He's also said before that the stretch goals for combat were basically things done in the older games but will be revised and made more sophisticated with modern technology, so it's not like an enormous departure in some respects.

Yu has elaborated on his position recently, with that maybe a fighting game engine in an adventure game is not a perfect fit, and he definitely has a point. There's room for the storytelling to come across more in the fights, feeling more like Ryo is a martial arts savant by pulling off elaborate moves and cinematic feats with simpler controls, that you don't really get when you're just cheesing Chai in the YOU Arcade with Crawl Cyclone.

And let's be real, there's a real sense of enjoyment in stuff like dodging and countering against enemies in the original games, but that's rarely ever more than two button presses. Having fun with Shenmue's combat does not exclusively rest on your ability to pull off Demon's Triangle every time.

Like I said with the example of cheesing the Chai fight; there's a disconnect between Ryo being good at martial arts in the story and the player being good at the game (or at least knowing how to win).

Again, I love Shenmue's combat and I spent a lot of time with it pulling off the harder moves, but in terms of looking good, and feeling like this great martial artist, that always came from the simpler stuff like dodging attacks, counters, and the occasional flashy harder move thrown in.

More often than not you're trying and failing to pull off those complex button presses before you finally get it right, and I think Yu wants to pull back on some of those more gamey behaviors and think more "what would I do if I was this character" when overwhelmed by enemies, and that's maybe also why stuff like the environment, physics, and splitting enemies into smaller groups are going to be integral parts of III's combat.

Like, if you wanted a fighting game you'd play one, not an adventure game.

If we were just told it was changing with no more information or justification that'd be a little concerning, but as it stands, I can kinda see it in my mind's eye and imagine what it'll be like, or thereabouts.

And we also have to remember the past. Shenmue's fighting engine was a simplified version of VF (seriously some of the timings and button presses are much more forgiving and easy to remember), and yet had plenty of depth if you cared to look for it.

Shenmue in general was designed for simplicity, as Yu imagined it as a game even kids can play (just look at the footage of him being excited seeing a kid enjoying the game at TGS pre-release. Also as someone who played Shenmue as a kid, I can attest to its simplicity), so it's not this huge departure to keep that at its core. Just don't assume simplicity means lowest common denominator.

Shenmue_Legend wrote:
Ideally, the fighting system should be so good that you can make the fights look like the ones during cut scenes.

This is, I think, Yu's train of thought on the matter.

But where he's diverging from most of us is that the player must be really skilled to get to that point, and I personally believe he's right considering his justification about Shenmue ultimately being an adventure game.

I know we'll replay the games over and over and put in the countless hours to get really good at more complex fighting moves, but what about the people who just play it through once? Asking them to get as good as a player at a fighting game might be a turn off, because it's maybe not really what they bought into the game for.

They could be a quick thinker who is good at other types of games, but maybe their capacity for button presses and memorisation of moves is lacking. I know there's been some talk already in this thread about it maybe "making the fighting for dumb people", but other things Yu has said indicate using your head more in combat and providing a challenge other than just being quick on the gamepad. Does that really sound like he's making it for stupid people? It sort of sounds like the opposite in some respects.

And y'know, Yu has talked about having a strong interest in making the game challenging for players who found elements of the original games easy. Scaling difficulty has secretly been one of Yu's major legacies in gaming. The basic and intermediate combat controls may be simple for most players, but what's to say there isn't something further for players with more skill?

Ultimately, Yu wants the player to feel good. It's a video game, and that's what video games are largely for. He knows this, and has been practicing this methodology for basically his entire career. You can even see this in something like After Burner with how the game would sort of lock on to enemies unbeknownst to the player so they could feel like they're good at the game. I can't really blame him for following the core pillars of how he makes video games.

We'll see how it all works out.

Even unrelated to the simplification, stretch goals like AI Battling look set to clear up an issue with Shenmue's combat regardless of the change to a new engine; a better, dynamic lock-on system of sorts. Gives me reassurance Yu has his head on straight and isn't just changing things for the sake of it.

Sorry for the text wall.

Generally we should wait to see, or even play it. But all the same, I think it's probably the right decision on lots of levels to reinvent Shenmue's combat in the same spirit of how the original was developed, while aiming for greater player satisfaction and better storytelling.

Re: "Unlike Shenmue II it won't use the Virtua engine."

I think the old fighting system would age Shenmue 3 terribly.
I'd welcome a new system, look at the Batman Arkham games, the way you chain, block and counter attack is stunning to watch and flows beautifully.
It would be perfect for a martial arts themed game.

What? No, no, no, NO! They should stay as far away as possible from that awful system. One button to attack and one button to counter? It is beyond terrible. Shenmue I and II still have the best fighting system out of any adventure type game, it is definetly better than the Batman Arkham series. Having said that though, it seems like no game has quite got the art of combat down quite right. They're still far away from reaching the pinnacle.

Re: "Unlike Shenmue II it won't use the Virtua engine."

I appreciate the reply man, thank you.

After reading all that it really sounds like Arkham and Sleeping Dogs like combat, yeah the combat in Sleeping Dogs is pretty but Shenmue had you feeling tense. It made you want to learn moves and practise so you can get better and utilize those moves in combat to make it easier. Catering to the Kyle Hilliard's (See Game Informer Shenmue/II Let's Play) of gamers sounds like a mistake, the people that just want to beat the bad guy instantaneously without any skill or training. Yes games should be fun but part of the thrill, part of that fun is that feeling you get when you put in the work, trained learned some combo's and use it to beat that difficult boss finally, that's all part of the fun. It gives you an amazing feeling of accomplishment and let's you feel more immersed in the world especially when it's not a retry and you have to find those bad guys again as a result of your failure and Shenmue is all about that kind of immersion.

The best way to cater to the Kyle Hilliards is scaling difficulty. If you suck, the game drops down in difficulty and button mashing can work. If you're awesome the game will level up and more complex combinations and dodging will be required. The "cinematic and smooth" fighting is your reward for the time you put into the game. That was a perfect system so anyone can play. I don't want Uncharted cinematic predetermined animations, this is what's killing gaming. Older games may not have looked very cinematic but they made you feel like you were doing things yourself, using your own skill rather than "Press A to win".

Re: "Unlike Shenmue II it won't use the Virtua engine."

You think he's just not allowed to use the VF engine? I don't mind a new system but a big part of Shenmue was how the combat system was, Suzuki-San has to be very careful here. I'd still like to press down, forward punch and kick to do the iron palm or forward, forward punch to do the elbow assault. If elbow assault is button mashing square 5 times to and it shows up at the end of the button mashing punch combo i'll be very upset. But let's wait and see.
I don't think we'll ever know the specifics of what Yu is and isn't allowed to use, but I have to imagine if we didn't hit the improved FREE Battle stretch goal the combat could have been on the old engine. Although... that'd be more of a curse than a blessing IMO. The engine would probably get very little renovation (because if they had the time and money to do that, why not just do a total rewrite like they are now?), and unfortunately it'd be showing its age pretty considerably.

Yu has briefly mentioned old moves, so maybe they'll make it in under similar button presses... but even if they don't it'd hardly be the first time (command changes from Shenmue to Shenmue II, anyone?).

Personally, I'd like to see the modular element to the movelist return for III, which it seems it might going by how Yu has talked about skills developing through the skill tree into more refined techniques. Being able to switch out moves or even styles that change Ryo's whole movelist might be very cool. I kind of imagined they were going in that direction with the Martial Arts Mastery stretch goals, but I'll wait to see if they follow through on something as extensive as creating multiple variations of Ryo's movelist.

It sounds a bit like how Yakuza handles their multiple combat styles now that I think about it, but only on paper as a design idea. The execution itself is likely to have a Yu Suzuki twist none of us are thinking of.

Re: Earliest possible (in-game date) completion?Speedrun rec

If you're interested in what's possible when playing "unfair".

With the Debug Beta you can jump right to the final arrival at the harbor and finish the game on December 3rd.
So you could reach Shenmue II on Christmas Eve! I never tried to carry the save over, really have to do that some day. One thing to note is that the save needs to me modified as the Beta handles them as Japanese.

And if you want to go even further you can glitch back out of the Yellow Head Building and reset the date back to December 0 in 1900! I have no idea if the calendar still works if you keep playing but reaching the stone pit from this point will be 5 days later. So you could in theory finish Shenmue II almost exactly 86 years before Ryo started his journey.

Sorry I missed this post. Modding the save is probably not necessary if you import into the EU version using the code I posted 2 years ago to disable the region check. (Or apply the hex changes documented in that thread to patch the game itself)

Just wanted to point this out again since people are still suggesting converting save files:

Re: Shenmue II on XBox One

Well, there's hardly anything you could call list yet...

I have made videos putting all ways to play Shenmue II next to each other. It greatly shows how different the game looks on Xbox vs 360. It loses all post processing in emulation but that actually makes it look closer to the DC overall.

Oh and if you do plan on getting a 360 forget about the old crap Elite. Go for an S or E model.
Smaller, more efficient and much more quiet.

But I'm thinking for a while for these new systems... the rapport system may only trigger side events, since the main story cannot be much altered.

Re: Yu Suzuki: "I can make the whole game you imagined"

I'm pretty happy with what I saw in the trailer. Being able to expand it to be what Yu Suzuki has always wanted Shenmue 3 to be is an incredible dream come true. Not just for him, but for all of us fans as well. I'm really excited and I'm hoping that this game does well enough that it pushes passed the criticisms of modern day skeptics and trolls and allows YsNet to create a fourth and final game in the series. Having an ending... a conclusion to the narrative has been a long time coming.

No. Four games is too less. There needs to be at least five. And besides, it's better to end on a V rather than a IV! Shenmue isn't just about the story, so why are you in such a hurry to see a conclusion? It's the gameplay, the immersion, the atmosphere, the adventure etc. and many other elements of Shenmue that makes it so special. It's the whole experience that is really important, the story is just one part of it. I would much prefer to have the full on experience with nothing taken away from it so that we can see everything that is supposed to happen, rather than a game with lots of content stripped from it (which is what would pretty much happen if it ends on IV) just to get a conclusion. I've said this before and I'll say it again, I would rather have no conclusion at all than a half-baked one!

Moving up the destination, for the sake of an ending, never was Shenmue's destiny.

Why rush to finish in a couple years after waiting nearly 20 years for this opportunity?

Shenmue is a spiritual pilgrimage which is all about the journey.

Patience is a virtue.

Epiphany isn't the ending.

Re: Casting a real life Shenmue film?

First of all, I think it would be a mistake to cast all Japanese actors. This thing needs international appeal, and I can't think of any Japanese actors that can really draw a serious crowd.
With that in mind, my casting would go like this:

Ryo Hazuki - Fred Savage
https://image.ibb.co/ixxHEQ/1ryofred.png
For the main character, of course you need to cast the greatest actor who ever lived, Fred Savage. You could probably even recreate the carrots scene by splicing together old footage from The Wonder Years and having him dub over it. His voice is exactly the same as it was back then, so it all works out.

Iwao Hazuki - Danny Glover
https://image.ibb.co/fbkZTk/2iwaodanny.png
Because you need a black guy.

Lan Di - Ninja from Die Antwoord
https://image.ibb.co/jHNsEQ/landininja.png
If we're gonna get Neil Blomkamp to direct this thing -- and let's face it, he's the only choice there can possibly be, what with all the robots that have to be added -- then you need to get an actor that literally only Neil Blomkamp thinks is worthwhile.

Guizhang - Kevin Hart
https://image.ibb.co/jun68k/guizhangkevin.png
Because sometimes you need two black guys.

Ine-san - Amy Schumer
https://image.ibb.co/nwriok/inesanamy.png
It always seemed to me like the developers wanted Ine-san to be like super funny, and she always had this smug attitude about herself like she thought she was hilarious.
But she wasn't. Like, not even a little bit.

One of the most adventurous actors in Hollywood. I think he'd welcome the chance to really stretch his abilities by playing a little special needs Japanese girl. We could win this thing some goddamn Oscars.

Re: Shenmue II on XBox One

If it does go compatible on XbOne, how do you expect it to be- same as 360? Improvements? Sound glitches fixed? Shadows?
Sure would be good to get.. though still need 1+2 to support 3..

I guess it would be fixed. Unlike original Xbox emulation on 360, 360 games tend to perform better on Xbox One. So I'm hoping the same for original Xbox games.

Militia Marketing/Ensuring Success

This post is being made because, as we all know by now, Shenmue will not end with 3. What this means is that unless the game is considered successful "enough", a fourth title may not materialize. This is a disheartening thought.

I've donated more for Shenmue 3 via the kickstarter than I have ever spent on a game. It's not like I have money to throw away, it was just a "put up or shut up" moment for me, as it was for many of you guys here. That being said, do we have a community plan for once the game has launched? In terms of getting another installment, that will depend completely on what happens AFTER we all get what we want and are sitting, fat and happy playing the game. MOST games sell the lion's share of their numbers in the first couple of weeks.

I know I am not alone in my plan to buy 5 or so copies of the game. I am doing this purely to help a fourth installment along. Asking every member to buy multiple copies of the game, however, is not a viable plan. What we need is a down and dirty viral marketing campaign. This community will have to make a lot of noise. Not just in here, but in general gaming sites, reddit, etc. We have to sell this game even if it turns out to not get good review scores etc. There has to be a movement, similar to the one that got shenmue 3 made, similar to the one asking for shenmue HD, but significantly stronger.

Re: Militia Marketing/Ensuring Success

With a little over a year until release, I've recently started saving up money for S3. I'm gonna buy about ten or twelve copies of the game. All three regional versions on both PC and PS 4 makes six copies. I'll need to consider buying backup copies of each version which I won't ever open and play but buy just for collecting purposes.

As for the future of the series after the third game. Personally, I'll do anything I can to make it successful enough to warrant a fourth game funded by Sega directly or an outside publisher like Sony or Deep Silver. However, should Shenmue 3 not sell enough copies - God forbid - I won't sit there and give up.

I want Shenmue to be finished in the form of a video game/PC game. Not a fucking manga, not a novel, not a film or whatever. If it takes another Kickstarter, it's gonna take another Kickstarter. I doubt we'll be able to get 6.3 million $ again, but we may still be able to warrant a fourth game. Even if Yu will only be able to make the most basic version of a fourth game, I won't complain.

The bottom line is: I'll do what it takes to get Shenmue finished. The thing is I don't know a lot about marketing, social media and stuff. But if there will be something we will be doing as a community, count me in.

If, for whatever reason, our efforts won't be sufficient to make S3 successful enough to have a big publisher fund the fourth game, I won't cave in and give up. I'll do more.

This is not about nostalgia or longing for the old Dreamcast days or some bullshit. This means a lot more than a game to me and I won't let this go.

Re: Militia Marketing/Ensuring Success

I think whatever we do it needs to involve toy capsules just like with the third of the month campaign. Not sure what we would do. The goal would need to be creating viral buzz with some public demonstration or display. A forklift made out of toy capsules? Sending capsules to GameStops for display?

This topic needs more activity though, because we live in a viral society and if we can capture the gaming world’s attention that would help our little game immensely.

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

Short but another great look.

The second character shown is actually cute. Makes me realize the modelers are capable of making cute characters. Hopefully Shenhua turns out equally as cute as she appeared in the first two games.

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

It's a progress update, should be for fucking fans, and take into account that it's mostly showing the range of "emotions" they are working, the model is even in a t pose making it even more surreal.

I would say that the gamescom trailer was a weird marketing move, but this is a backer update to show PROGRESS, people fucking on this are just being assholes.

It looks a little dated, ok, but bad ? For what it's pretty much an indie game with tons of characters ? Really ?

Now YS should keep the fans without updates because some people are going to be shitty ??

Tbh, the models are truly shocking at first sight and would easily make fun meme-generators. I needed to watch the video several times to fairly assimilate the YSnet's work.
Shenmue Dojo is quite an understanding audience but I think many outside fans are afraid of what they're seeing in the last few months.

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

I think it's ok to be critical and that it's also ok to be extremely optimistic at this stage. Technophilz was just unintelligently attacking everything and acting like there was no way in hell the game would turn out ok.

Re: S3 Progress Report Vol 4 Facial Animations

I get it too. Blind fanboy-faith won't get anyone anywhere.

I may end lynched for what I'm going to say, but I don't agree on that. Not fully at least.

I personally think that, as the Shenmue fanbase, we should be a little bit fanboys.

There is more than enough people jumping on every single occasion to bash Shenmue or Yu Suzuki for many various reasons. There is more than enough people wanting Shenmue to fail for many various reasons.

I don't say we need to be blinded by our passion for the Shenmue Series but we need to be united and put things in perspective when a mere 53 seconds video update for Kickstarter backers is enough to see wagons of people use it to bash Shenmue 3 or insult Yu Suzuki's talent.

it's a crowdfunded project, we get to see steps of the development we usually never see. I can agree that the communication around the project is not good, but that doesn't mean that the game won't be good in the end.

What good can come out from joining the chorus of critics? What good can come out from telling to YsNet and Yu Suzuki that they are bad at making a game? That the artistic direction is wrong, the Ryo model is off, etc...?
They know what they are doing and are doing the best they can anyway.
Just think of the Deep Silver partnership: Suzuki San always knew he would need more budget to achieve what he has in mind for Shenmue 3 so he managed to increase the budget. For a man who never gave up on his dream to continue the Shenmue story, the least we can do is to keep our faith in him.

Until Shenmue 3 is released, the best attitude the Shenmue fan base can adopt is to be supportive of the development team efforts.

Now, let the lynching begin.

Nahovil wrote:People are fooling themselves too, if they believe this is "merely developmental", "that it's a WIP and there's still one whole year to go".

Um, that's entirely true though? Literally objectively true.

Re: Best character model of Ryo (poll).

Uh... 1, 2, and 4 are all basically derived from the same model, and have been retouched since they're all parts of promotional art.

Shouldn't the options be more like, I dunno... Dreamcast model, Passport model, Saturn model, Shenmue Online render, SIII prototype model, and SIII final model? Something like that?
Just a thought.

Re: How we could create more interest in Shenmue

we all chip in to build an artificial island in international waters. This should lead to nearby countries trying to claim said island as a way to expand their maritime boundaries. At this point it should have garnered the attention of every international news outlet to which we reveal that we made the island in the form of Ryo's head to promote shenmue.

PM me your donations.

Re: Raising more money for Shenmue III

Doubt anyone with Bill Gates' kind of money is going to dump $50 million into a game that's of no interest or benefit to them. Would be nice in a different world.

I know. But, it's still possible and is also the best thing I could think of.

Hmm you also could think of becoming an overnight multi-millionaire yourself by ways of staking your entire house and savings on low odds gambling, winning the lottery and/or playing with derivatives on the stock market, and donating about $50 million of the winnings for the cause in the end. You can keep the rest, for you know, future or something. And not mentioning that Yu would be even more proud of your deed because you are a true fan, unlike Bill Gates. IT IS STILL POSSIBLE.

Re: S3 Preorder on Amazon

^ That's because this listing is for the retail product.

-If you want to help Shenmue 3, then pre-order a copy via the Slacker Backer
-If you want to fund Shenmue 4, then you need to buy the final (retail) product upon the game's release.

As Shenmue fans, we basically need to do both ;)

Re: Shenmue II on XBox One

Bump, wondering if anyone heard any news about this.

They haven't made any additional announcements since the first one at E3. The only title they've announced at this point is Crimson Skies. I'm hyped about that so I've been impatiently waiting! As of now it's not even available in the Xbox Live Insider program. So it's starting to look like it'll be late fall before they roll it out.

Poem In Thousand White Church

I've been playing Shenmue II for about fourteen years, and I just noticed the poem in the Thousand White Church. I took a photo with my phone, here's the poem:

A happy new year
Today is fine
Gone with window

Today is fine
Gone with window
Refining the vegetables

Re: Poem In Thousand White Church

A lot of people seem to miss that you can just go there whenever you want. You can also go on the balcony through a door one floor higher. Not much to see there but still cool.

Another intesting fact about this area is that they censored the statue. In the Japanese version it's holding a baby, likely portraying Mary and Jesus.
