Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

Hi Shenmue fans !
Let me clarify this for you. After a travel of 1200km made just to meet Yu, I was in Monaco this weekend, where I met Richard ( rdk_nl ) from this board. He filmed me when I asked this question http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p3PjvKA7m0 that was misinterpreted since...

The question was " If Mr. Suzuki ends up being unable to find the financial resources or the good circumstances to develop Shenmue 3, would it be possible to him to decide to finish the story as an Anime in 3D, or even cheaper : as a book ".

His answer was, if I can relate to the translator (really not sure about that) : " Maybe, it's a possibility... Even in that form, I would like to make some more Shenmue ".

2 things :

1. With the conference translation, I still don't know if Yu Suzuki means that "Even in that form...some more Shenmue" means : "If I wanted to do it, I would not make one episode, but a series of anime or books" or "If I chose to release Shenmue on those medias, I would still want to release more Shenmue as a videogame". Maybe one of you japanese speaking fans might translate Yu's answer there, it would be really nice ;-) .

2. I never said anything about a "manga", I spoke about a book (refering in french to the word "romancé" that relates to a novel, a written adaptation of the original script). I hope it's been well translated to Yu Suzuki. It's that french journalist who made the connection between an Anime and a manga book, not me.

Let's hope we'll have something concrete in the near future... Thank you !

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

Here are the screens from the Monaco conference.

BTW, I've seen pages of personal opinions based on nuthin', but couldn't spot any reply to my call for an accurate japanese translation of the Anime/book question (page 11). Could someone who understands japanese AND would give a f%£k help to get Yu's answer on that one ? Thanks.

Re: Yu Suzuki At Monaco Anime Game Show

It was a pleasure too, pal !
Since your cam was filming everything but the screen, I obviously had to do it (I missed the video of the saturn dance game he's been involved in, but I believe I've got all the others)...

Here are those pictures at a higher resolution (3600x2700) : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/51587875/Yu%20Suzuki%20screens%20from%20Monaco.rar ;-)

...and I know it's already been said in here, but if Yu did insist on the dissolution of the Soviet union, it's because military forces had the best computers at that time, and he's been able to buy some cheaper elements from the USSR in 1991. Those high-end computers sold cheaper made the development of real 3d game possible...

Re: When Suzuki talked about 16 chapters

I begin to think that the 11 chapters have always been the canon from the original novel and that the 16 chapters was a cut adapted for the Dreamcast/Dreamcast 2 versions.

Totally ! I've been thinking about replying this since you began this (fascinating !) thread. The number of chapters was never changed from 16 to 11 as you wrote in the thread, it's the opposite. The GDC 2014 screenshots come from the 1994 Virtua fighter RPG game. The 11-chapters story is the core of the scenario described by Yu in the interviews.

The 16-chapters story was the way AM2 did adapt the original 11-ch story into the Shenmue games, by adding "density" to the story, removing parts (chapter 3 out of 11 : the train), and reorganizing the order of events (Meeting of Shenhua has been advanced).

I've read worried comments about the kickstarter 44 update concerning the changes they made to the (11 chapters) story. But when you get that the original script has been modified from the very beginning to create Shenmue 1 and 2, it's no big deal if they do it again...

In Shenmue 3, I really wonder where the fight against the 4 bosses (we heard about in the last update) will take place in the original story... May they be the 4 faces from the chapter 4 picture (which would be a come back close to where we ended up with the meeting of ShenHua shown on the chapter 5 picture) ? Or will we already reach the 4 bosses of the Chi-you-men (Lan Di, Niao Sun, Gentei, Koutei) ? What do you guys think ?

I would also be very interested if the scripts that Yu will give to the three japanese 10.000$ guests happen to leak and be translated at some point... In the kickstarter description, they talk about Shenmue & Shenmue 2 script. BUT ! The picture shows "The legend of Akira", which probably means he will share the first two chapters of the 11-chapters story... It would be very interesting to read the original script, even if it's only the very beginning !

Thank you so much for compiling these infos, please carry on updating us with the story side of Shenmue, I really dig it ! ;-)

Re: Where exactly are we in the story?

People are usually mixing the two story sources. There is 1. the novel Yu wrote that has 11 chapters and is set since Virtua fighter quest RPG (around 1994), and then 2. the 16-chapters Shenmue scripts that were written by Kenji Miyakami & co. as Shenmue games were under development. Yu is always refering to the original 1994 11-chapters novel and his employees (Shin Ishikawa) did talk in 2003 about 16 chapters of the Shenmue scripts.

16 chapters = 11 main chapters + 5 transition chapters

Not really... Because the interview was held in 2003, after Shenmue 2 was released. And at that time, Yu Suzuki had already decided to drop the chapters 3&4 off the original 11-chapters novel (Shanghai & Suzhou). So Shin Ishikawa couldn't have counted those chapters from the 11-chapters novel in the 16-chapters Shenmue script story...

Spaghetti noted a mistake on the 2003 interview board http://segabits.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/TimelineToTheShenmueSaga.jpg . And indeed, Shenmue is only 3 chapters (off the 16-chapters count). But we know Bailu village was worked on during Shenmue 2's development and as Kenji Miyakami said in a 2015 video : cut in the end. Maybe Shin Ishikawa forgot that this part was taken off Shenmue 2... Which would give in the 16 chapters story :
Chapter 1 : Yokosuka
Chapter 2 : The boat (canceled)
Chapter 3 : Hong-Kong
Chapter 4 : Kowloon
Chapter 5 : Guilin
Chapter 6 : Bailu village
We can assume those 6 first chapters cover the following chapters from the 11-chapters novel : 1 : Yokosuka, 2 : Hong-Kong, 3&4 were dropped, and a part of chapter 5 in Guilin, which makes 6 or 7 chapters remaining from Yu's novel (depending on if he did count Guilin as totally finished with Bailu or in another chapter). So we have those 6 Shenmue script chapters + 6 or 7 remaining chapters from the novel, which makes 12 or 13. From the total of 16, that makes 3 or 4 chapters we have no clue about. If Ishikawa did count right, I wonder what story those 3 or 4 additional chapters cover.

BTW, We should not complain about the Suzhou & Shanghai chapters cancellation for it's been decided before Shenmue 2's development (or I guess they would have counted unused chapters as they did for the boat and Guilin would have been numbered 6 or 7 in Shenmue2 since the Suzhou & Shanghai take place between Hong-Kong and Guilin).

Since the Project Berkley video is older than Shenmue Saturn, it would be interesting to know if chapter 3&4 were developed until some point for the Saturn...
And I really hope Yu will make those chapters available as flashbacks in the future games...playing scenes or even video only...

300$ has been the average daily donations for the last 3 months. If it continues that way, we should hit 6,955,000 by Christmas 2018. We would need $425 everyday to hit the 7M$ mark. If the kickstarter upgrades show up, we can easily do it :-"
