Switch or PSVR

So games I have atm that support the PSVR are..

Resident Evil 7
Rise of the Tomb Raider
Star Wars Battlefront
Drive Club
Geometry Wars 3
Final Fantasy XV
Fallout 4 (update incoming)
Skyrim (update incoming)

Plus cinematic mode for other games and when watching movies.

Games that I will want anyways that can or will also support PSVR:

Ace Combat 7
Gran Turismo Sport
Rez Infinite
Farpoint
Dirt Rally

So then the question is are these games worth playing in VR?
Certainly I can say the most worth it would probably be Ace Combat 7 and Gran Turismo to me..
But after that whats coming out? Sony didn't showcase PSVR to the degree I hoped for at E3.

I guess I should consider the fact that PSVR even though nearing the 2 year mark, is still in its infancy. Also perhaps by the time it does really take off, a version 2 of the hardware might be out.
Also its only available in white.. I have all my entertainment center stuff in black. That would just totally clash like as if...

Re: 6 months into 2017..your fave games so far?

Well Raithos brought up VanQuish so as long as we're talking re-releases.

Darius Burst CS is just another great entry in the Darius series. It's no G-Darius tho but does have it's music in some stages in arcade mode. Tons of DLC but to start before DLC you have 3000 stages to play. Yup 3000. Maybe why it's full priced. I love the game.

Astebreed is one of and was the highest rated user reviewed game on Steam. It's a hybrid of Hack n Slash and Shmup. My god is the game fun. Like any Shmup it is short but is really repayable. Highly recommended. I think it's 15 bucks. Sometimes goes on sale on Steam or PSN.

Soldner Z-2 Final Prototype is a western developed Shmup that feels very Japanese. Not bullet hell either. . Soldner is a sequel to a PS3 game. It's great on the go and you unlock more stages the more keys you get by playing the stages again. Also a fun challenge mode. Can be had for 13 bucks including DLC on Vita.

None of these games are bullet hell. They can be easy to get into as a novice and get more challenging later.

Switch or PSVR

Ok so just sold my old PS4 like I said I would.
Got more than I thought too.
Then tried to find a Switch at all the big box retailers.. couldnt find it.
Finally decided to check out this small shop. Boom they had it and in all black like I want..
Then it just hit me.

What the hell am I doing? I still haven't finished countless games in my back log. Especially Persona 5, Mass Effect Andromeda (which ive barely touched) and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Do I really need to spend over ¥50,000 right now?
So I walked out the door with my cash in hand.
Fuck me right? I still want it but thats alot of money for a system I dont think ill be playing even half as much as the PS4 Pro.

This needs to sit in the oven for me abit.

Re: Random Thoughts

Glad to hear you guys are safe! I was just there at the beginning of June working Free Press Festival and really got to know the city and drove around a good bit too. Its hard to imagine that place over come with water the way it is, that storm was unreal. My other friends and co-wrokers in the area seem to be ok, but a lot of the photos and stories coming from it are tough to take in.

Just arrived this afternoon.

Lost my old PAL Saturn several years ago, which I have very fond memories of, so decided to order a new one. Opted for a Japanese model this time, for the wider game library.

What are you currently playing?

Just had a heart attack with my new 5K iMac.
Incredible optimization by Turn 10 that im able to play Forza 7 at native 4K and 60fps with only the occasional dropped frame. All at high settings and never overclocked the computer at all.
The colors, the motion, the feels. Just holy mother of god..
BUT I played the demo. I didn’t buy the game and wont be for the foreseeable future. Why? Because they completely left out car part modding and customization. Like wtf.. what a shame. Maybe I’ll take a look at Project Cars 2 now..

Re: Random Thoughts

It's quite surprising just how dead this forum is outside of the Shenmue III forum. The whole time we were waiting for SIII,
GD was the most active and now SIII is a reality everyone has fucked off.

For me it’s 2 things:
1. I don’t like the random thoughts or random gaming thoughts topics. I think after they were created people stopped making topics and just posted in them and if you missed the conversation it was too late to jump in.

2. The Shenmue III announcement brought a slew of people who don’t stick around and just want to talk about Shenmue. Before Shenmue III we had a strong 20 or so regulars that got along and knew each other’s likes and dislikes. If someone recommended me a game I took the suggestion seriously as I knew they knew what I was into. Even the general topics were normally a laugh from anything to people talking about their life, funny news stories or serious debates.

We even put rules in topics like the gaming music thread that no Shenmue music could be shared because we knew everyone liked it and we didn’t need to just talk about Shenmue. After 10 years of no Shenmue news most of the regulars were bored of talking about it, I’m still bored of talking about Shenmue and I’m just waiting for Shenmue III which I’m really excited about but have no interest disecting every screenshot. I imagine most of the old regulars feel the same as I don’t see many in the Shenmue forums and although they all at least liked Shenmue to most it wasn’t the best thing ever.

I’ve thought about trying to inject life into the forums and just posting tons of topics to try and get conversation flowing again. The thing that put me off was that I didn’t know most of the names posting anymore, I used to know every name that posted here and their personality. I don’t really have much interest in talking to a bunch of people who don’t hang around like 95% of those who posted in the introduce yourself topic. I’d take 20 people who come onto a forum to bullshit, have a laugh and discuss their hobby over 50 that have an interest in one topic. This forum has always been a Shenmue forum in name but the 10 odd years I was posting here it was more a general gaming forum with down to earth people.

Re: Xenoblade 2

I haven't played it in over a week because I've been busy, but this guy in the video is just straight up not far enough yet for the difficulty to ramp up, and also does not understand how to play the game. Like Raithos said, you need to understand how to cancel into arts and use combos otherwise you will just straight up lose. Battles only take long for him because he isn't playing correctly. It's not entirely his fault, since tutorials cannot be revisited... but the game really isn't that complicated.

The game has its flaws, but IMO the game is pretty good. The voice acting is pretty great, although some characters aren't that great (like Pyra and Mythra). But I especially like the Welsh cat girl. It's also very cinematic and the cut-scenes are directed pretty well. The game's side-quests are still stupid and should be ignored unless you like doing pointless bullshit, but they are easily ignored. The map system is confusing as fuck but not as bad as it was in Xenoblade Chronicles X. And lastly, the blade randomness system is stupid and never should have existed. It's basically lootboxes without real money, which is just pointless all around--designed to waste your time... but it wasn't built that way to make the developers extra money.... so why is it there?!

Anyway, I don't really like JRPGs that much anymore... like not really at all... and this is enjoyable for me. It feels like a game that would have come out on the PS2 or something. So take that for what you will. If it interests you, I'd get it... or don't. But it's not a bad game.

Re: Xenoblade 2

Normally I agree with you OL, but his main issues were difficulty and battles taking too long. It’s not uncommon for games to have a difficulty curve that ramps up as people get accustomed to the game and if he understood the mechanics the battles wouldn’t take long.

Not saying this is a good analogy, but if someone plays Mario 64, for instance, for 10 hours, but fails to get more than 5 stars, how seriously should one take a negative review given as a result?

EDIT: the only reason I mention this is because I think his video is largely misrepresentative of what the game is actually like. I think most people who enjoy JPGs will like the game and it’s worth looking into further, despite this video.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

This is probably the last time I'll be logged in until after Christmas so I wanted to drop a note wishing you all the very best over the next couple weeks. 2018 is looking to be promising for at least some Shenmue news of some kind if not the release of the third game.

I also wanted to say thanks to most members of Shenmue Dojo for being a great group of people. There are many (most) gaming related forums that are full of trolls, jerks and much harsher words than that. It's generally really easy to come on here and speak your mind about something; be it Shenmue related or not. Thanks for that guys/gals.

Merry Christmas and again, Happy New Year.

Daily Shenmue - Starting November 29th

In celebration of Shenmue III coming out next year, I'll be starting my catch up playthrough of both Shenmue I and Shenmue II. However, this time I'll only be playing an in-game day each day, no more, no less. If time skips forward for Ryo, then I am not allowed to play Shenmue until the realtime day and ingame day sync up again. Anyone wanting to join me is welcome--although I understand why it may not be super appealing of a playthrough.

Since today is the day that Iwao Hazuki died, I'll be starting today. (although there's not much to play today haha)

I'll also be keeping a personal journal entry of everything that happens in game.

Welcome ladies and gentleman to the 2017 7th Annual Dojo Awards live from the Kodak theatre. We've got a heck of a show for you tonight so let's get started.

*Riku Rose walks out on stage*

Riku Rose:
Welcome all. Last year was a quiet year yet again due to the delay of Shenmue III which we're all looking forward to but hopefully 2018 will finally be the year. Outside of the Shenmue forums it's been pretty quiet but I believe it's the members who have been here through thick and thin that keep me coming back.

We've gone all out this year by getting in Jeff Goldblum so to be honest with you we couldn't get the most in demand people to present the awards, still I'm sure everyone will have a good time.

On with the show.

Re: Review The Last Game You Beat

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and Spider-Man: Edge of Time
http://oi66.tinypic.com/2cgjvqb.jpg http://oi65.tinypic.com/2ppgcxs.jpg

Within the past couple months I finally started reading the old Spider-Man 2099 comics from the early-90s. Never got to when I was a kid, yet the image of him has always remained ingrained in my head as an iconic reminder of the 90s; always gives me a warm, squishy feeling, the same way Genesis games, the X-Files, and Batman the Animated Series do. Low and behold I'm loving the hell out of the comics, so what better time than now to try out Miguel O'Hara's only legitimate appearances in gaming?

Shattered Dimensions actually features four versions of Spidey: Amazing (regular ol' modern-day Peter Parker), Ultimate (teenage, wearing the symbiotic black suit), Noir (an angsty 1930s version fighting gangsters), and of course 2099. The game is essentially split up into episodic levels (unlike the usual open-world mold that most Spidey games aim for), with only a loose shell of a story linking them together. And while the story is nothing particularly engaging, the dialogue is, on occasion, genuinely funny and entertaining. Weak story or not, it's still enjoyable hearing all the well-written chatter left and right. It's a good sign to me that the writer of this one, Dan Slott, is apparently also the writer of the new Insomniac-developed Spider-Man game coming to PS4, so I'm looking forward to that a little more now.

http://oi68.tinypic.com/1535s8o.jpg

Gameplay remains relatively the same between the characters (run around levels, beat up badguys, move on), with the one really notable exception being the Noir version. Instead of being all-out action, his levels are generally stealth-based. It's not the greatest stealth in the world, but the extra spice is always welcome when it pops up. And, if anything, I am really surprised by how much I liked this version of the character. I'm not particularly jazzed about reading the comics he's from (they're a byproduct of Marvel's post-2000 "cash in on whatever's hip" mentality, and apparently Sin City was on the brain when they did this), but his setup is still surprisingly engaging.
Regardless, I still had the most fun playing as Spidey 2099, since he was the whole reason I started this to begin with. He does have an occasional mechanic that pops up from time to time which is really cool, in which he'll go into free-fall and have to dodge objects and fight a boss, but it's used very, very sparingly; too sparingly, if I'm entirely honest.
And while the idea behind the voice casting for the different Spideys is great (they basically cast all the actors who have played him in old cartoons and whatnot), I think the 2099 version is horribly miscast. He's too jokey/goofy, and sounds like an old white guy making jokes to his grandkids. Kind of strange for a character who's supposed to be a half-Mexican 20-something.
Last note, Shattered Dimensions is also the first place where Nolan North got to voice Deadpool, which he would later do in the official Deadpool game itself. Perfect casting. Can't wait to play the Deadpool game now, if only to hear more of that.

Edge of Time carries over most of the same gameplay from Shattered Dimensions, though now it's no longer necessarily level-based. Or rather, the levels aren't split up and accessed from a menu this time. One scene organically flows into the next, and it feels much more cohesive, less disjointed. It's just one genuinely exciting action scene and race against death after another, and it doesn't let up for hours. It's pretty great.
This time around, rather than jumping between dimensions, we instead see Spider-Man 2099 communicating with modern-day Spidey through time, usually with one getting into a jam and the other having to take measures to affect the future and change things in some way. It's a fun dynamic, though it's all very, very scripted; this ain't no sandbox.
Speaking of scripting, this one is written by Peter David, original creator of Spidey 2099, so everything feels really, really spot-on in that regard. Miguel O'Hara was also recast, so he sounds a helluva lot more like I've been imagining him as I read the comics.

Overall, even more than Shattered Dimensions, this was the game I really needed to scratch that itch I had. It's hard to imagine there'll ever be much more in the way of Miguel O'Hara as a main protagonist in a videogame, so this was a helluva lot of fun, and a real treat for a comics dork like me, who actually thinks stuff from the 90s was pretty rad.
If only we could get a genuine open-world Spidey 2099 game; man, the freakin possibilities.
