Re: Switch or PSVR

Also, a study about The Hobbit showed that those who watched in 3D remembered least/were less into it. Neuroscientists noted that the unnatural perception made the brain process the visuals more. So less brain power was dedicated to the rest. Developers will have to continue trying different ways to implement the technology I guess.

I'm not condoning perversion, but what about -- how shall I put it -- adult VR? Being immersed can have different meanings. I mean, I think what you're saying, and I agree, is what Roger Ebert said about video games when they first came out: they are not art like cinema because they don't allow complete artistic control over story and how it is presented to the audience/player. For story-driven gaming. It's already awesome for the obvious purely visual experiences, with one exception: I think story-driven action games that put the player in one spot with realistically limited 3D visibility (like in a race car or the cockpit of a ship, etc) are already a perfect visual language because the content suits the medium. But we need radical new approaches that make the medium suit any content.

This was actually my quote so I'll respond. It wasn't really about the artistic control. Their research looked at the physical way the brain copes with these signals. The way it was presented was not realistic enough for the brain to process it with little effort. So they would likely need to improve technical aspects. As we both said : racing etc. is already suited for this.
Regarding adult VR. There are also several studies already. They reported that a significant amount of the available content was perceived as being weird by many users. Something with the proportions, being thrown into another body as the protagonist etc. And for some it was the fact that they got nervous by getting "too close" :P

@KiBa: VR porn already exists. It even has its own category on Pornhub.

Hey, AG, I'm not waiting for holosuites anymore.

Problem with pre-recorded VR porn is that there is zero interaction, which is what VR is all about. Without interaction, you just have a shitty 3D movie

No interaction seems pretty realistic to me.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

Hot dang.
Well first off about the UI I'm surprised someone who is so into UI design can agree with ie. the "My Games" library icon being right next to multiple adverts.

Then take that top row and basically scrap it all and call it the Store, because that's basically all its acting as. Just constant buy that, look at this, sign up for whatever. The whole system UI is just so blatantly geared towards making you buy shit. It's not only annoying but offensive. The PS4 and Switch put all that stuff in clearly designated areas. They don't constantly bombard you and you can get where you want to be in 1-2 QUICK steps tops.

Also the loading from page to page in the Xbox UI is just plain slow and laggy. I always experience this half second delay with a button press. You would almost think its input lag but then you realise everything in the whole UI is slow altogether too. Maybe load less bullshit on the front end so we can just have a nice simple interface like we did with the first gen Xbox 360 blade style UI. Now that was a good UI. Then they went and fucked that one up and it's never been the same since.

It's like they realised at one point they could turn a games console into a advertising and sales machine and had a field day in seeing how far they could go. With the constant balancing act of attempting to listen to user feedback with UI updates to "streamline" while then adding 10 more sales icons into the mix like we wouldn't notice.

And the side bar? It would be great if you didn't need to do so many additional presses to still get what you want. And its of course crazy slow too.
tbh just scrap the entire UI besides the side bar because that's basically all we need to operate the system. Then put it front and center with no other distractions. Maybe that would speed things up and make it look like a games console again.

And ya the controller is great though. Favourite thing about the console and its something I use more often to play PC games than with the Xbox.. >_>

Ya they better reboot Mech Assault or Crimson Skies before I permanently replace its space with the Dreamcast.

Thanks for the reply dood, there's a lot of salient points here too. I hope I can do justice to this without imagery.

The whole 'ad' thing doesn't really both me because the majority (except one on the bottom right) is informing of features/shortcuts (like gold), new games and as a whole I quite like the appearance it all elegantly put together as well as the 'live' presence of it all, it doesn't feel like an desolate/arid place to be). And honestly i have never taken issue with the fact that ad's still there when having a gold subscription, it seems like complaining

The PS4 menu welcomes the idea of all these dynamic themes (which I think is cool and I can appreciate) but the inconsistency of it is what drives me nuts: If you're going to allow these theme devs to drastically alter the look of the OS, you have to go the whole way. It's unreasonable to expect that all apps should have an icon of their own, but most of the stock ones should (i'm looking at you 'PS Store' and 'What's New') because they look so jarring when you have a see-through icon and then a big blue ps store icon that you are not allowed to alter in anyway.

Also, there's just too much noise in the current layout and the way they've listed everything. If you press options on a game tile you get a whole list of jargon, most of which is never applicable.

Then there's the amount of steps it takes to order any of your games in folders. If you want to move things around you have to press options, go down to edit folder, go down again to the icon you want to move, press X, and move one one by one... waaaaaay to clumsily implemented. To do the same thing with Xbox pins (after first assigning pins either through your recent played list/games folder or online/app)

The actual Sony aesthetic stands out too, because unlike Apple, Google, MS they didn't really incorporate flat design. Fair enough, I prefer flat design but I don't want to dictate to others what their tastes should be. If people like gradients and all these wavy lines in the background will all this bizarre sombre music that plays in the background: power to them. But things ought to be clearer (which they've just did in the last update to incorporate some flat/vector-y icons, cool!) but they still don't really follow the principles like the golden rule.

Setting up the thing felt liek a pain as well, waaay too many questions for waaay too many thing like they're not confident on setting up a default that the user can then further tweak.

Also, please Sony: Don't be stingy with not allowing auto updates for games when the console is on standby when not on PS+, this is waaay too much of an inconvenience/nuisance, people hardly have enough time as it is for setting up all this. They're the only one's out of all Steam/Nintendo/Xbox that do this.

In terms of things to come, there's going to be refunds and gifting on the xbone which I'm hoping Ninty/Sony adopt. Unlike sony, xbox is still lacking a basket feature for the store atm... :/

I want to be optimistic here as a whole. I'm glad Sony added external HDD's because I've never liked the thought of swapping the internal unless the internal one was going to have a use elsewhere. PS4 is 500gb atm and my xbone is 1tb (w/ 4tb HDD). Also, we're past the days of the PS3 interface (which I'm still a little gutted they never fixed aspects of). I have nostalgia for the blades/XMB interface too, but the limitations of that interface obviously couldn't handle the load as features/lists grew more prominent. The Ps3 especially (with all this vita card applicatioon, sing star etc etc) is a mess man.

We live in a time now where all the corporate empires like Google, Apple and (depending where you go) MS have really advanced UI with using clean/consistent/legible icons and with design principles/guidelines all organised and considered, the expectation have just skyrocketed.

Sure, the Xbox One UI had big issues when it started, and the majority of that came with the fact that the OS was designed to be navigated primarily with Kinect voices > controller. Whether people liked that or not (i quite liked it for 360, never owned a kinect for XB1), they've shifted away from all that to improve the UI/experience for controller only users as they started selling xbones without kinect. And xbox dashboard atm isn't perfect either (going from game window to home doesn't feel seamless at all + the reduction of some features like snap for favouring performance did upset a few owners).

I totally understand your point of view though and it's totally valid of course, I bought an xbox about a year and a half later after launch? I actually thought the xbone had decent title releases for every year since it launched with the big exception on this year (halo wars 2 and crackdown 3?) scalebound did hit hard for us too but there was a bunch of cool stuff this year I got to try (phantom dust hd) overall though the japanese releases on PS4 earlier in the year did pretty much decimate everything else. I'm just saying overall there's a lot to like about the xbone UI and it's the one I prefer as a whole. Hopefully I explained my perspective of the OS adequately enough.

...

That's enough UI discussion from me today xD. Remember the days DVD's use to have slick/super awesome UI? And now they're all just a jpeg (and often not a good one) with arial font options? What happened? Disc space? The decline of DVD sales? Emphasis placed on blu-rays?

Discussing hardware design is fun too. Personally I like the one I have (OG Xbox, entire matt finish so non of that gloss scuffing) because it's just super robust, silent and ventilates very well. I kinda wanted that after, you know, the early 360 years xD. I understood the advantages of having external power supplies but they are kind of a nuisance I suppose. The very PS4 OG with the totally illegible icons for eject/power and ventilation was a bit of a disappointment and one of the bigger reasons I waited (along with the 2.4ghz only wifi chip because i'm nowhere near my ethernet) but the slim made up for it. The tactile buttons, the removable of that huge-ass LED tunnel on top of the console are things I favour. I can see how people like changing their faceplates prior though...

For controllers, imo both xbox/ps4 had issues with out of the gate. Xbox had super-stubborn shoulder buttons and a lack of 3.5mm headphone jack port. PS4 had the dodgy thumbsticks coating, weirder triggers and low battery life of the controller. Both seem fine now after their revisions though. Overall I prefer the xbone controller as a whole on the ergonomics side/grip, but I think it's subjective for the most part.

Which leads to the switch... oh my words. Interested to hear you hardware experience here @Axm. First of, the engineering of the handheld and joycons is incredible. And let's praise nintendo for adopting a modular design for the handheld innards/components and use of screws (non of this glue guff you see everywhere else, pushing away from planned obsolescence and no chances of proper user repair that you see for every other bit of tech).

I don't own a switch but I borrowed my brother in law's for a while and hardware wise it's currently has the most fundamental flaws out there. Skipping all the wifi/bluetooth/battery reading/plastic stand/ventilation/gyroscope/docking on samsung/LG tv's/plastic build warping issues all aside, the design ethos for this console just wasn't properly considered. They tried going for an omni design approach with the analogue and buttons being totally vertical on the joycon for the sake of 'sharing the joy' (of which I did with street fighter 2... and damn did it not feel right in that setup at all :/). Sad thing though is that the ergonomics side was apparent during the early prototypes for the WiiU controller, which they corrected later for the retail units. They clearly know and are aware of all this.

The lack of a proper dpad in normal mode wasn't as much of a huge letdown, that probably would just take some adjustment for that game. And the sharing the joy-mode clips are just clumsy, impractical and unconsidered additions.
But the analog/buttons need to be diagonal for me to even use it for a standard amount of time. All the 'fixes' for this seem to resort to either buying more accessories like a joypad (which kinda defeats the purpose, also 'dat price dough') and resorting to 3D printing components (as Ben Heck on youtube demonstrated).

So yeah, all I'll say is in true nintendo fashion: I'm sure all their future iterative console designs (XL/mini/*new*) are going to much much more considered on the whole. I think they're working on this quicker than we think, with all the WSJ reports added with the versatility/scaleability of manufacturing these components. I'd have though Nintendo learned the hardway about hardware gimmicks after star fox. Nintendo IP's aren't really a big on their own for me, but I'm super intrigued on the games that could come as well as the game Nagoshi is working on for it atm. Is it a monkey ball game, or a handheld yakuza spinoff? Exciting stuff!

(P.S. Never played crimson skies or mech assault :( I do own the former somewhere though). Also, apologies for anyone reading if I sounded too harsh on anything, again just my critiquing, hopefully it's balanced. But if I did any of the mistakes when i was at uni my tutors would have publicly shot me down for it (as they do) this shyte is taken seriously as is always up for scrutiny! xD

Have you decided on what you're planning to get? :)

(P.P.S. has anyone tried the steam controller? I've never tried one)
(P.P.P.S. Gamescom hype!)
(P.P.P.P.S. yes I wrote all this during my break-time. No regrets xD)

Re: Kickstarter Update #71: Gamescom 2017 Update #2

For the first time I feel disappointed by them. They put us into hype mode about saying the game will be shown at Gamescom but now its no demo or videos?

So will that mean pictures? Like a substantial amount? Cause why tell us so in advance like that only not show off something substantial?

At this point we really need to see some new content. They delayed the game (granted totally welcomed by that) but now we need to see the counter to the delay with some fresh content.
Ya I really hope they have a ton of new screen shots..
My confidence is in them but just show us something solid to gawk at!

I think you misunderstood them. They WILL NOT have video/demo on the show floor, for visitors to play but THEY WILL have demos/videos to show to the press in the business area. We will be giving these videos at the same time, via Kickstarter and the official website.
It just says "latest news" will be shared at the event. Did you read information from another source that I just haven't yet? Not following this also partially because it's just poorly worded throughout.

We are go for a Shenmue event at the general admission entertainment area! Unfortunately, we will not be doing a large event like showcasing promotional videos or placing playable demos in this venue .

From the last Kickstarter update:
Yu Suzuki himself will of course be there to give the latest news about Shenmue III's development!

The business area
We will be participating in the business area. The area is limited to media and other business members of the game industry. Unfortunately, general admittance visitors cannot enter this area. For the latest on-site info, we please ask you to check the various media outlets.

So as Peter said, and as it says in this latest update:
We will be posting an update through Kickstarter and our official website at the same timing.

They will be showing off the game to the press (maybe via Sony's conference - or if not then in the business area with appointments with the press), and then they will share that with us via Kickstarter and the Official Site. This is how it works with pretty much every game.

Re: Kickstarter Update #71: Gamescom 2017 Update #2

Think of it as E3. YSNET will be on Sony's stage to show off all new stuff. You won't be in the audience for it since that's for press only, and most likely watch it on the internet. You then attend E3 in the days after, but you have the chance to meet Suzuki-san at a location at the event.

It's very generous of him. I bet Kojima wasn't walking about the public show floor after the Sony showcase in 2016, meeting and talking with fans.

People who has been misled are literally stupid according this forum, ok.
Sorry but it's another communication fail in the long history of Shenmue III campaign fails. And it's not a question about pessimism as I can read above.
The CM job is to explain more what you supposedly need to anticipate any fog, even the foolish ones. I don't know why the team just didn't put a few-words reminder about the business part. It's easy to criticize people to forget the previous update when you are a Shenmue over-obsessed fan. The only real tools here are the media.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

So who here has played a substantial amount of Mass Effect Andromeda? I decided to fire it up today because I felt guilty for not giving it a fair shake. I wanted to see if the story would grab me anymore than its failed to do so far.

Does it get better? When? How much time am I gonna have to put in until it really takes off if ever?
Just finding it very vanilla and soulless right now in these first 4-6 hours.

I played it to 100% completion on Insanity difficulty. I'm not sure 4-6 hours will give you much story to go on but I would say that if you are done with the ice planet (Voeld) and still not liking what you are seeing then I would call it quits. I'll just say that in Andromeda the most personal stories (and most diverging branching choices) are in the side missions and not in the main story thread.

If it helps I wrote a review (not much of spoilers in it) on the forum's review topic .

Game Watch Interview with Yu Suzuki @Gamescom [Translated]

Game Watch published a very interesting interview with Suzuki-san, the interview took place during Gamescom 2017 and includes some really insightful and interesting information about Shenmue III, here's a short summary of it:

⋅  The released Shenmue III teaser footage is real-time in-game graphics.
⋅  All charterers models are temporary and subject to change.
⋅  Facial animations were initially implemented but have been removed about a month ago.
⋅  The teaser was especially made for Gamescom 2017, no further plans to show more of the game at this year's Gamescom or Tokyo Game Show. However, a full-scale promotion will take place next year.
⋅  Deep Silver will publish the game internationally, and they'll provide budget and promotional support. A publisher for Japan is to be decided.
⋅  Suzuki-san would like to continue the series in Shenmue IV if possible.
⋅  Suzuki-san is not interested in forcing the Shenmue story to complete in Shenmue III.
⋅  Shenmue III will take around 30 hours of gameplay to complete.
⋅  The fighting engine in Shenmue III is being built from scratch, and unlike Shenmue II it won't use the Virtua engine.
⋅  A system that allows phone calls with characters from Shenmue and Shenmue II is planned for Shenmue III.
⋅  Suzuki-san would like to bring as many voice actors from the previous games as possible, but some are retired now, he will audition a new voice actress for Shenhua.
⋅  OST from Shenmue and Shenmue II will probably be reused in Shenmue III.
⋅  The new partnership with Deep Silver is strong and it's aimed to improve the Shenmue III experience beyond what was initially planned on the Kickstarter.

Finally, Suzuki-san asks the fans to continue their support, and promises to do his best to make a good game out of Shenmue III.

I have a very strong feeling that 2018 will be the year of Shenmue ...

Update:
Switch has kindly translated the original interview

Here it is, a full translation of the GAME Watch interview. Enjoy!

Yu Suzuki: "I can make the whole game you imagined"

It seems that the partnership with Deep Silver has infact given Yu-san the funds he requires to make "the full on Shenmue experience" that we have all been craving.

We all assumed this but it now looks like it has been confirmed by Yu himself in an interview with Metro.

http://metro.co.uk/2017/08/28/shenmue-iii-yu-suzuki-interview-dont-worry-i-can-make-the-whole-game-you-imagined-6885083/

Even after we completed the Kickstarter project I have been looking for other partners to join us and as you know we have now partnered with Deep Silver. So I’m now comfortable in saying, ‘Don’t worry, I can make the whole game you imagined!’.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts (Read OP Before Posting)

I disagree with that sentiment. The fans have been begging for this for years and years. It comes up every single Blizzcon. And Blizzard at every turn has said no. If anything, I don't think they had any intention of every launching a Vanilla server and caved solely due to mounting pressure from the player base. Hardcore fans launching their own private vanilla servers and making money off their property was probably the last straw. If they don't provide it, a fan will.

Re: how does your gameroom look like??

Some truly amazing and inspiring setups here! Much more focused and in one spot then I have it.
So many systems bunched up under the TVs, magnificent!

I made some photos of my room, wich is rather uniquely differently constructed. Basically a clockwise toor around it.
It's a small room and I also have to sleep there so space has to be used wherever possible and as efficient as possible. So my stuff is spread everywhere and almost the entire wall area is covered. I'd rather have some nice shelves from the floor to the ceiling and all but the setup still has it's own charme..

Got it up like it is here last friday. cost me a whole day. had a similar setup before, all made by my girlfriend btw, but it had become a mess because I had gotten different systems and most of all improved cables for pretty much all my systems. I'm a huge videophile so this is very important to me. now it's all set and done for a while I hope.

Only my ps4 is now left connected to a tv downstairs.

And especially if they leave the gameplay exactly as is where you can grind kite 50 mobs at once. Sick pleasure.

Yes, I remember that was one of my main motivations to speccing into frost mage. Rounding up 50 mobs and then killing them with blizzard was like the ultimate power trip.

The constant focus on grinding wasn't really that fun to me, though. I would log on with the intention to gain a level or two and log off. I didn't care about the story and I just went to new areas simply to get quests and level. It wasn't fun, it just felt like a job. Interactions with other players were pretty neat, but by the time I joined the game, the leveling areas was basically empty so I was by myself, grinding mobs 80% of the time.

Re: Random Thoughts

Over here they kept trying to talk up the American team, but there just wasn't a ton to talk about after almost all of them flubbed a few things here and there (not to take anything away from them; it's a hard-as-fuck sport to begin with, so they're all talented as hell anyway, even if they were to finish last).
I know it's probably irritating when the "trendy" thing of the moment keeps getting airtime, but I have to say I'd have gladly taken more talk about Hanyu on tv here; at least the guy totally deserves it. Absolutely everything I saw of him (and have watched online) was downright exceptional. Dude's an artist through and through, rather than just someone grabbing at points.
It was kind of funny, it almost seemed like they were trying to talk him down on tv here ("Oh yeah, he's great, but Nathan Chen can do 15 quads in a single program, yadda yadda") , but once he actually performed, they had to shut the hell up and just recognize that he was better than anything the US had to offer.

Totally agree about Uno, though. He's been downplayed far too much. I've rewatched his free skate a few times online now, and I have to say it might have been my single favorite thing in the entire Olympics.
He falls once in the first 25 seconds, gets up like nothing happened, and continues on totally unfazed. When I mentioned how certain performances can become just so mesmerizing and absorbing, this is exactly what I was talking about; the second half of that program was obviously better than most of the guys, but I'd say it even put to shame most of the stuff done by the gold- and silver-winning Russian girls (who had a ton of hype surrounding them, and definitely delivered).
I'm not sure how things were portrayed in other countries, but watching it here, it was like Uno came out of absolutely nowhere. No talk about him beforehand, no hype. Total underdog kind of thing, and I loved watching it. It was like seeing Memento for the first time without knowing anything about it beforehand; mindblowing.

Sorry, I don't know how to be concise about anything anymore.

Re: Random Thoughts

At the risk of sounding unconventional or cool by Dojo standards (hey, when has that stopped me), but i just cannot get enough of The Greatest Showman. Its a shit movie, it really is, especially when you have the likes of Bill Condon at the writing helm, along with jenny Bicks... so i have to question who had any sort of final say so here... but its just such a sensationally great movie for someone like me who looks for an experience, and feeling in a movie that differentiates and separates itself from the crowd.

The easiest way to do that is a musical, yet no one seems to churn them out like Rodgers and Hammerstein did almost 40 years ago... So whats the problem? Its like its became its own suedo-parody of itself, but modern day musicals like Moulin Rouge, Chicago and Dreamgirls were not only showstopper cinema successees, but also oscar worthy movies. Even the most recent La La Land is an Oscar winner!
And thats what makes this movie something else. Like i said, its shit. The story of P.T. Barnum is barely even covered in the story, i mean its a pure broad stroke if ever there was a definition of the meaning of broad stroke, which REALLY destroy the movie, and deserved of its 50% average score in general critique.

But...

They have done it again. I would go as far as to say Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are getting as close to as The Sherman Brothers did with their Disney scores, in terms of modern day songs with easy to remember lyrics that you will already know halfway by the end of your very first listen. Its a very simple concept, to start mellow or medium, then to raise upward and upward in keychanges to a grandioso finish, but Jesus does it make your hairs stand on end, when delivered by the likes of Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman, and Zak Efron.

Dances numbers accompanying the songs are right on the money, as well as the set and costume design, and barring some Michael Gracey lack of bravery in shots, i gotta say, this is one of the most infectious soundtracks to a movie ive ever heard. My Dad, Mum and Sister have also seen it, as well as downloaded the soundtrack, and at the very least, it was great to hear UK film critic Mark Kermode record a second review to say the words, "i was wrong", in response to his first review of the movie.

Still a shite movie like.

(and apologies to all of the posts I've missed that I need to reply to. They will come soon!)

Re: Shenmue HD announced for PS4 / XBOX ONE / PC

I could gripe about a few things... Maybe tomorrow.

But for now... I guess I will say I was told D3T were behind this last May. So it's been in production since then at the very least, more than likely way before. I've had plenty of time to read up on their studio and have followed them on Twitter for the past year. They are extremely professional and have worked on a pleothra of titles, from The Witcher 3 to various others. They have also worked with Sega before on the Mega Drive collections, both previous release and current one.

For now what I will say is simply this. These games are absolutely vital to the success of Shenmue 3 and right now, that's where I draw the line. For players to have these easily accessible on modern day hardware is something that you cannot put into words. They are necessary for Shenmue 3, and finally it's all come full circle. 14 years of being on these boards.... Who the hell would have thought we would have gotten to this point.

Shenmue 1 and 2 HD, followed by Shenmue 3.

Let that sink in.

Re: Shenmue 1 & 2 will be $29.99

I will be buying 2 copies of each for my personal collection.

Also, 5 of each to drive around Belfast and just throw them out at random spots from the car window.

Re: Shenmue HD announced for PS4 / XBOX ONE / PC

I'd like to see the scene where Ryo gets off the boat in Shenmue 2. His shoes have significantly more polygons in the Xbox version than the Dreamcast version, and I'd like to see if it's been improved any more than that.

Re: Which version will you play first?

PS4, it just feels so unthinkable and real. Want to play with all of the consoles familiar and cozy features. I'll play on my gaming rig to follow.

Achievements Confirmed

Not sure if this was in any of the articles or snippets of the press release out there.

Via Adam Koralik's Facebook.

Getting ready to leave Japan. Want to extend a big thank you to all of you. I can tell you first hand, Sega expected you to be happy, but they were genuinely shocked by the extreme passion shown around the world in the last 24 hours. Watching them cover their mouths and be moved as they watched people like James Reiner cry, smiling intensely as they see explosions of excitement come from others like HappyConsoleGamer and many more that exceed my ability to list. I watched them react to us as we all reacted to the news of the release. You have in every way lived up to the expectation I told them they'd get. Shenmue is love, we did it, we made it so. You made this possible, never forget that.

Many of you have a lot of questions about the release, unfortunately while I know the answer to many of your questions, I am not permitted to say more than about 5% of what I know. All of which is in my current video, I shall link it below for those interested.

However, I assure you, in time these answers will come. Many of you will be very happy, hopefully even a tenth as happy as I am. In the meantime continue to discuss, speculate, and above all, have fun. The more buzz and support, the better, trust me on that.

Update: I'm now allowed to tell you that the release is being developed by D3T and that the game has achievements. I personally unlocked one while playing. ;)
