It was a weekday, but they were taken before 10 am so most of the shops hadn't opened yet (just like in Shenmue :)).

Re: Shenmue 3 Ryo Hazuki Leaks

Nice topic title! :)

There are toilets at the guest house in Choubu at least, according to the floor plan Yu Suzuki tweeted out in 2015. Whether Ryo will be able to use them is another matter...

Edit: the bathrooms that are labelled are only for bathing, but there are what may be 3 toilet cubicles opposite.

Interview with Shenmue 2 Designer: Norikazu Hirai

SEGA recently published an interview with one of the designers who worked on Shenmue II, Norikazu Hirai.

I've translated the part where he talks about his Shenmue work. It turns out that he is the person who was responsible for designing the Sword of Seven Stars. He also reveals that Yu Suzuki's original concept for it was actually a "Dagger" of Seven Stars!

Re: Shenmue Undub [Japanese Speech Mod] [CD-R 80/99/GDI]

However I think I remember when kogami and smith were working on each of their version that it was impossible to fit everything on cd-80 and he had to cut a sequence or some such, I don't exactly recall.
Yes, my understanding is that kogami released an 80-minute version but had to withdraw it due to a critical issue being found quite far into the gameplay. The new 80-minute version (which is being worked on by the Shenmue Master team) is being put together through a manual process of identifying and removing unused data files, so testing will be an important final stage.

Interview with Creator of the You Arcade Diorama

Earlier this year, a talented Shenmue fan and model hobbyist in Japan completed an amazingly-accurate scale model diorama recreation of the interior of Shenmue's You Arcade, which I'm sure many will have seen.

https://i.imgur.com/9hGElDB.jpg

I got in touch by email with the fan who created the diorama to ask what prompted him to embark on such a project and find out exactly how it was made.
Q: To start with, please tell us a bit about yourself.

HS: My real name is Hiroaki Suzuki. I teach the drums in Japan and as a hobby I mold figures and build model kits.

Q: What does Shenmue mean for you? What memories do you have about playing Shenmue?

HS: I came across Shenmue when I was about 12 or 13 years old. The first time I played, I found it hard and I remember spending all my time playing at the You Arcade.

Shenmue has taught me many things: to be thoughtful to those around you; the wonderfulness of helping each other; and the importance of making an effort.

In my work now as an instructor, I hope I’m able to pass on some of the things I grew to feel through Shenmue.

Shenmue 1 Start of Game Flowchart | Early Design Document

I've translated another early design diagram extracted from the 1998 Shenmue art book, and this one relates to the very start of game play in Shenmue I.

There is no Ine-san mentioned and instead (somewhat optimistically) it is Fuku-san who has been taking care of Ryo for the whole week that he has been in bed. There are also several other interesting differences compared to the final version of the game.

Re: MAGIC '18 - ShenmueMaster Yu Suzuki interview

I wonder why he couldn't answer the question about having arcade games in Shenmue 3? :-k
It's the same answer he's given when asked about Hang-On or Space Harrier specifically, so he may be referring to them rather than stuff like Excite QTE/QTE Title (both of which we know exist in the game already).
Yes, Yu's next words (not subtitled in this video) confirm this is the case, which are: "You're talking about Sega arcade games, right?"

Shenmue 1 & 2, at Sega and D3t is about 70% complete, says the latest Famitsu issue.

I got my hands on the Famitsu magazine today, and can confirm that it has "Development Status: 70%" in the same information box as the name of a PR official at SEGA, implying it is sourced officially.

How to Install Kotodaman

https://i.imgur.com/1qnHfyF.jpg

For anyone interested in trying out Sega's new mobile game Kotodaman (the one in which Ryo Hazuki has a cameo), the Dojo's own James Brown has written up an awesome guide on Phantom River Stone explaining how to do so if you live outside the Japan region for iPhone & iPad users. There's a separate guide for Android users.

Step-by-step guide to downloading Kotodaman outside Japan:

Now the game is in Japanese only, but even if you can't read it you should be able to tap your way through a few screens and enjoy sampling the music & animations!

Japanese lessons on Phantom River Stone

For any players of Shenmue who are inquisitive or have been inspired to find out more about the Japanese language, we are starting up a new series on Phantom River Stone called "Learn Japanese through Shenmue" aimed at beginners of Japanese. It will be structured around scenes and dialogue from Shenmue to add interest to the process of learning about the language. I hope you'll follow along and have fun.

The first lesson is available right now for blog patrons, and by the end of the month on the main blog for the public release.

Here's a little teaser...

That's a great aim. A good thing about the JLPT is that it helps give motivation to study, and you can buy study books on what's covered at each level.

Re: New Shenmue III pics from THQ Nordic financial presentat

When I saw the video I thought I saw her saying "Ojisan" rather than "Onisan", but didn't recognise the rest. I thought it was something to the effect of "Grandpa's inside" or something like that.
Ah yes, there is the possibility of other words that fit too. I think "oniisan" does seem to be a good match with the way she looks up to see Ryo at the same time.

Re: New Shenmue III pics from THQ Nordic financial presentat

I agree with ShenmueTree that communicating the feeling / intention behind words can result in a more natural translation rather than a direct translation of the words. Having said that, for me, "It's you, Ryo" sounds a reasonable line for a small kid, but there are many other possibilities that may fit better - also not knowing the context of the clip makes it hard to judge.

To go on a bit of a tangent, I actually have a bit of a small annoyance with a lot of VN and anime English subs/fansubs where the character is talking about themselves and the translator goes for a literal translation where they translate what works best as first person to the texts' third person. For example someone translating

「ジャスミン:ジャスミンは悲しい」
to
“Jasmine: Jasmine is sad.”
:) Hm, yes a speech pattern that sounds fine in Japanese definitely sounds weird put directly into English!

Re: Shenmue II NTSC - J Editions

I had a browse around Japanese websites and can find reference to 3 distinct versions:

1. Shenmue 2 (standard version)
Release date: 6 September 2001, price 8190 yen

2. Shenmue 2 (limited edition w/ VF4 discs & sticker on the front)
Release date: 6 September 2001, price 8190 yen

3. Shenmue 2 (Dorikore release)
Release date: 6 March 2003, price 2940 yen

About the VF4 sticker, I think it is normally stuck directly on the shrink wrap. Possibly the ones in the auctions where it is directly on the slip case / jewel case are where the owner transferred it there after opening?

1999 Interview with Yu Suzuki "15 Secrets of Shenmue"

https://i.imgur.com/xz5MmOV.jpg

I've posted up a translation of an interview Yu Suzuki held with the media on 18th January 1999, soon after the successful Shenmue premiere events. Shenmue was still somewhat shrouded in mystery, so the "15 Secrets" this article refers to - while not representing special in-game secrets or the like - are an interesting reflection on both expectations from the media/public as well as Yu Suzuki's mindset almost a year before its actual release.

Not only that, but Suzuki mentions themes that he still holds with importance today with development of Shenmue III, such as "reality vs realism".

Choubu Inn Floor Plans | Translation & Commentary

https://i.imgur.com/T0K0DAOl.jpg

I've posted an article on Phantom River Stone which is an extension of the Choubu Inn floor plan translations I posted to the Dojo in 2015, with added commentary.

Background:

Going back three years to the very start of the official Shenmue III project, soon after its successful funding on Kickstarter, Yu Suzuki tweeted out several images of concept art and design documents. Among these were floor plans of a building in the town of Choubu. There were clues scattered through-out the plans in the form of labels (in Japanese), but Yu did take the precaution of releasing the images in low resolution making the text extremely blurry and difficult to distinguish. In this blog post we translate as much as possible into English.

It's kind of interesting that Ryo's room at the Inn is in the same place that Xiuying's room was at the Da Yuan Apartments. Probably just a coincidence, but at least it'll be easy to remember.
That's a good point, I wouldn't be surprised if it was deliberate. Definitely easier to locate a room at the end of the corridor than remember the exact room number.

The "AI Battling" Stretch Goal

https://i.imgur.com/nik42aSm.jpg

The "AI Battling" stretch goal coming up at $7m was highlighted in the last Kickstarter Update. I don't think it's a topic that has come up very much to date, so I wrote a short post if anyone needs a reminder about what it is.

I also clarify in the post the following sentence about AI Battling, taken from the English version of the Kickstarter update:
R&D for this system is based on Yu Suzuki's concept for players who are not used to fighting games or for those who want a full immersion battle experience.
I was a bit puzzled about the intended meaning, so I translated it again from the Japanese version to get the finer nuances:
It's a feature for which basic research has been carried out since early on in the development, based on Yu Suzuki's wish for even players who aren't used to fighting games to experience a feeling of immersion in the battles

P.S. 100 Yen soda drinks in Shenmue are priced at 130 Yen irl, the inflation is real! :O :D
Yup, that's true. But there's actually one particular machine further along on Dobuita Street that still sells Coke cans at 100 yen which is perfect for recreating the Ryo drinking experience. I like to think the owner's paying tribute to the game by leaving it at that price. :)

Such a well done video. just curious, whats in tom and jack?
Jack is a small bar which even has an electronic darts machine (although it was broken when I went there). The Tom door leads upstairs to a karaoke bar, I believe.
