Re: Anecdotes About Yu Suzuki From Yuji Naka | DenFamiNicoGa

In February, SEGA legend Yuji Naka was a special guest on an informal talk show streamed live online by the Japanese site DenFamiNicoGamer.

http://i.imgur.com/g5pt52Im.jpg

Some of the inside stories he shared about his early days at SEGA are about Yu Suzuki, who was working there at the time. In particular, one previously-unheard episode ended up with the two not speaking for a couple of years!

I've translated these to English in this blog post:

Thanks for translating this.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ultimately his is just an opinion in a sea of others, and we really don't need it anyway considering every Shenmue fan got validated in liking it when Shenmue III broke Kickstarter records despite being a dead franchise for the better part of 20 years.

Shenmue fans have had to eat a lot of shit from people who didn't like the game, and even spitefully tried to tell us that we shouldn't want it, or we'll never get it.

But y'know, we persevered, and even though there are still attempts to bring us and the series down despite finally getting Shenmue III, this community can hold its own and promote the series positively to cut through the bullshit and reach the people who the game will strike a chord with.

I wrote a longer post than this as a genuine rebuttal to his points (as some of them are pretty dumb, IMO), but it doesn't really matter, because he doesn't really matter to us.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

I've finally done what it took to remedy one of my biggest mistake Shenmue wise... let my Dreamcast go, games included.

I'm now the proud "dad" (again) of an adopted family of three:
Dreamcast, Shenmue & Shenmue II. :king:

(APRIL FOOLS)Kickstarter Update #66: Reimagining Shenmue III

Greetings backers!
The time is upon us again to bring you a new update and this time we thought we’d announce the new format that Shenmue III will take and show you a few sneak peeks.

We want Shenmue III to reach as many people as possible and after minutes of market research, we realised that people no longer enjoy full-on console experiences. It is obvious that gamers today prefer casual experiences and it is for this reason we have decided to reimagine Shenmue III for phones and tablets.

So ladies and gentlemen, we present to you, the new Shenmue III:
https://i.gyazo.com/9e7bdd912305ca2a7d975acd2f7b724a.png

Here is the main screen. It shows the character you currently have selected and their current action. At the end of the timer, the character will be able to perform another action. Over the course of an action, the character will send you push notifications about their journey, continuing the story of Shenmue. If you are the impatient type, you can buy a booster using the ingame currency ‘Shenmoola’ in order to complete the journey faster.

Speaking of Shenmoola, we’re happy to confirm the return of Tomato Mart as the ingame store! Here you can spend your Shenmoola on boosters, arcade credits, extra playable characters and other perks:
https://i.gyazo.com/96a5aed87baa65cabb354eaa337aaf90.png

Let’s take a closer look!
https://i.gyazo.com/a30e5cc35b4e01c78b0dfe2bf8266532.png
As you can see, you can spend 100 Shenmoola on a can of Jet Cola in order to complete a journey twice as fast.

Shenmoola can be earned as a reward for completing quests, or it can be bought with real money. The choice is up to you!

That’s about all we have for now, but we hope you’re as excited as we are for this new stage in Shenmue history. Shenmue III will be launching on the App Store and Google Play Store this December.

Thank you for reading
- The Awesome Japan Team

Once again, happy April, Dojo!

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

The Shenmue series changed my life for the better, it is a videogame series that made me realise the importance of things in life, the small little things shown in the story of Ryo and his quest for vengeance is very emotional and an experience that can never be forgotten. I am only 17 years old and I will be telling you why I love Shenmue.

In 2012 after being convinced all the time throughout my life to play Shenmue 1 and 2 (which I was very keen on doing) by my elder brother that played them both at release, I finally play my brother's copy of the original Shenmue for Sega Dreamcast for the first time, I was only 13 years old at the time. I began the game as I see Iwao get killed by Lan Di and then make my way through the game experiencing a chilling and heartwarming journey through Dobuita and into the Yokosuka Harbor. Meeting many of Ryo's beloved friends as well as new people that hurt (such as the skinheaded Chai) and help on the way. Finally after beating all the thugs called the Mad Angels, they help us find out about Lan Di and his departure. Seeing Ryo leave Japan and board on the boat I was ready to continue the story through action packed Shenmue 2 and I could already feel the energy and bravery within Ryo himself.

Shenmue 2 begins and I am impressed with the very intense and epic boat intro, the music, angles and visual detail was incredibly welcoming and exhilarating. Yet to this day I would say that Shenmue 2 has the greatest opening intro to a sequel ever! I was immediately immersed in the huge new open world in Hong Kong getting robbed and eventually finding the guest house to sleep in. I felt as an actual stranger in a new town full of danger and people I do not know exactly like how Ryo would feel. I made my way through Hong Kong and then eventually to Kowloon then finally meeting Shenhua at Guilin until the stone pit where the game finally ends, I get chills and was ready for Shenmue 3...

Until E3 2015 It was finally announced! I waited 2 years but my brother had waited ever since such as most fans. Me and my brother are absolutely delighted to continue the story thanks to the one and only Yu Suzuki for making this all possible with his masterful vision.

I cannot wait for Shenmue 3!!! I know it will exceed expectations and be one of the greatest games of all time just like Shenmue 1 and 2, we have to give them time and it will be possible I truly believe so.

Re: PAYPAL SUPPORT FOR SHENMUE 3! PRE-ORDER FOR PS4/PC!

I am ready to give more money if we will have a beautifull teaser of Shenmue 3 at E3 2017. You to guys ? 8)

As for myself, and a good part of the people here, I'm ready to give more money no matter what may come.
Actually, I'm waiting for the rumoured addition of upgrades for the Kickstarter pledges. May this option not come in the end, I'll support the project a last time through the Slacker Backer campaign.

Picked up the Shenmue the Movie Theatre Pamphlet / Book recently! First i've seen of this, it's a very nice (however rather small) 16 page book. Took some photos of each page since it's only a small book :) -

Forklift Loop Glitch Explained

I've wanted to make this topic for a while, because every now and then, I've noticed some people have come across this particular issue, and did not know what the problem was, or how to fix this glitch. I hope that this topic helps anyone who gets stuck doing the same forklift route every day, so that any players with this issue can correct their route and continue the game as intended. On the flip side, this can also explain how the glitch works for people who would like to utilize it, for whatever reason.

When you get to the part of the game where Ryo gets the forklift job, there is one day of job training, and five official days of actual forklift work. On the second official day, you are tasked with taking the crates that are near the Harbor Lounge over to Warehouse #3. What is supposed to happen is that you get a cutscene sometime after lunch, while working. The problem is, this is the one day where you can completely bypass where the cutscene trigger was placed, causing you to have to repeat the same route the next day. This is the reason for why some players are stuck doing the same thing every day, with no progress in regards to the story mode. Below is a map explaining how the route is supposed to work;

https://gyazo.com/8dbbc7bc050c9fad063b618c7890af54.png

As you can see here, the trigger for the cutscene is between warehouses #4 and #5. If you go around the corner near warehouse #1, you miss the cutscene, and therefore have to do the same route the next day. This is where the forklift loop comes from. On all the other days, the cutscene trigger is in a spot that can't really be bypassed, because it's usually placed at a chokepoint where the player can't skip it. On this day, they placed the cutscene trigger at an avoidable location, presumably as a design oversight. As a result some players, few as they may be, are stuck on this day without knowing exactly why.

Hopefully, this helps explain it for anyone who is stuck, or will be stuck at this part sometime in the future. If you did it right, you should trigger a cutscene where the sailors start harassing you again, which results in you having a fight in warehouse #3.

If on the other hand, you actually want to use this glitch for whatever reason (maybe to earn more money), then you know how to bypass the cutscene trigger, so that you can pause progress on the story.

I hope this topic helps either way.

Update 2! Video 2 on The Harbor!
https://youtu.be/6sMqic_P02g
Hi Everyone.

I recently went to Japan for vacation/business and decided to take a trip to Yokosuka for some research.

Big thanks to Switch for showing me around :D

We took many photos of The Harbor and Dobuita Street which you can find below! We took lots of video footage too which will be uploaded at a later time to my Youtube channel.

It is amazing that even in 2017, Shenmue still is an accurate representation of Dobuita Street!

If you want to travel to Dobuita, feel free to PM me any questions you may have!

We ran into another Shenmue Fan who made a blog out of our visit here:
https://oninokokoro.wordpress.com/2017/04/04/%e6%a8%aa%e9%a0%88%e8%b3%80%e5%b8%82%e3%81%ae%e3%80%8c%e3%81%a9%e3%81%b6%e6%9d%bf%e9%80%9a%e3%82%8a%e3%80%8dyokosuka-citys-dobuita-street-%e7%a5%9e%e5%a5%88%e5%b7%9d/

I spoiler tagged each section of photos since there are 90+ photos in total!

Enjoy!

Re: Cédric Biscay interview by ActuGaming.net

Full translation (Probably not as accurate as it would be the other way round).

Q: Right now, you are producing Shenmue 3, which is still in development. How did things go with Sega and Sony to finally achieve this?

Cédric Biscay :To be fair, I would say it was possible in the first place thanks to the original author, Yu Suzuki. I know him very well and met him several times. At first, it was impossible to seriously consider a sequel to Shenmue 2, because the Licence owners (SEGA) didn't want to hear about it. Over time, we (Shibuya Productions) and Yu Suzuki wanted to work together on a game. So we launched a project who could not be completed in the end. At the same time, the situation about Shenmue 3 changed and Shibuya Productions decided to produce it. It's also at this time that we chose to work with crowdfunding, in order to check if the Community (fan base) was large enough and if it could help us funding the game.
Ultimately, the decision to make Shenmue 3 comes from Yu Suzuki and Shibuya Productions. Of course, SEGA allows us to use the licence, since they are the owners of the Shenmue franchise. Actually, Sony comes in a second phase, once they saw that everything was secured, that fundings were provided to support the project.
They (Sony) helped us a lot in terms of communication, in particular during E3 (2015) in Los Angeles, when we did the big announcement. And then of course, they will soon participate actively with the game marketing.

Q: So, Shenmue 3 will come out for PC and PS4, right?

Cédric Biscay : That's right, still planned for PC & PS4.

Q: And for Xbox One ? It seems to me they were disagreements on the matter?

Cédric Biscay : Not specifically disagreement, it's more that Microsoft showed late interest in having Shenmue 3 compared to Sony. Obviously, it's easier to want something when everything is easily accessible. We must remember that way before E3 in Los Angeles, everybody was thinking "Well, Shenmue 3 will never come out, it is a bit of a holy grail" or "the first two games didn't sell well enough so nobody will be interested in Shenmue 3". Truth is, from the moment we decided we would bypass/avoid those obstacles, a lot more people showed interest in being part of the adventure.

Q: Since we talk about Shenmue 3, do you have some exclusive news for us? Release date or story elements for example, etc...?

Cédric Biscay : It's not the right time for exclusive news. I'm always surprised that people ask me on a regular basis about the release date because actually, we gave one right from the start and it hasn't changed to this day. It's April 15 right? To this day, Shenmue 3 is still planned for a December 2017 release date. The situation can evolve but there are no contradicting elements at the moment. In any case, we are not running late with development. It doesn't mean we cannot encounter last-minute hitch or whatever. Anyhow, to this day, the development team didn't report any problem to me.

Q: There is also a rumour about HD remasters of the first two Shenmue and apparently, they should come out this year. Do you know if they will really come out this year? Real facts or fiction ?

Cédric Biscay : First of all, ever since the beginning of the project, this is what we would like to happen. Apparently, it’s something SEGA wants too. It’s only my personal opinion but there’s every chance that SEGA has an interest for those remasters, especially considering all the hype surrounding Shenmue 3. So, I cannot officially confirm the remasters, since I don’t work at SEGA, but it seems logical to me that those games come out eventually. What we would really like to see though, is those games released before Shenmue 3 comes out. This would help us a lot with the marketing but would also bring new players to the Series, because to be fair, start a Saga with the third episode isn’t very cool. If people have played the remasters first, it would be much more fun.

Q : About Shenmue 3 gameplay. Is it going to reach a wide audience, that is to say those who already know the franchise and the new comers ?

Cédric Biscay : That’s what we aim for. That’s what we included with Yu Suzuki in the game. Actually, what we really don’t want, is disappoint the fans. This is essential. And we don’t want to cut our self off from the gamers, this is as simple as that. Therefore, we try to balance things for everybody to be happy but not by making the game hard. It’s essential to keep everybody happy in the true sense of the word. We don’t want to diminish aspects to please others. We want everybody to be happy with the game, this is our goal.

I didn't translate the rest of the interview, since it's not Shenmue relevant.

Re: Shenmue Dojo Twitch Channel - schedule & discussion

Ok, first off, sorry for the blips over the past 2 weeks. I know they were supposed to be (arguably) the best episodes that we will have done so far, covering Fangmeis Birthday, and of course the duck racing. Unfortunately, my ISP here had other plans, and despite thinking i was on the best (and most expensive!) package, it turns out not necessarily so. I currently get 70mb download speeds, and 5mb upload speeds. Thats more than adequate for me, however the problem has arisen when we moved the start times, and 9pm is still within the "peak time" threshold. Its because of this, that the screen started juttering after the 1 hour mark, with OBS dropping frames like crazy, and the reason for this is because my ISP only allow up to a 2gig upload threshold per hour. They do have valid reasons for this, in particular to prevent P2P sharing and other illegal activity, but the issue is what about the rapidly rising amount of uploaders to the likes of Twitch and Youtube etc. who are doing perfectly legal activities.

So my ISP also have a 200 "gamer" package where they have promised me no traffic management restrictions or thresholds. Its a little bit more extra a month (of course it is) so ive went ahead and ordered it. The alternative was to move the times back to what they were which first of all, doesnt really suit myself with working a full time job, as well as the numbers and response to the new times have been very positive. Anyways, that hopefully will take care of any issues we have had, and the times will stay the same for this weeks stream and we will see how we get on.

Re: December 2017 is fastly approaching!

Inside its like a big classroom. Suzuki-san is at the head table and each member of staff has daily meetings at scheduled times where they bring their work up to him. Okayasu-san sits just to the right of the main table at his own desk, then all the other staff, old and new are together. Learning and working. Sometimes Suzuki-sanwill do a walkabout and see what you are working on at that present point in time.

Re: Archive of Shenmue Passport content?

Heya guys, Falco Girgis here. I'm the lead developer of the Elysian Shadows RPG on Kickstarter and I'm the dude from Adventures in Game Development on YouTube.

I've been in contact with an admin here using the Shenmue Dojo YouTube username about this icon restoration endeavor. You might not know, but as part of developing Elysian Shadows and our cross-platform SDK, I've developed a massively-cross platform VMU emulator (ElysianVMU) that will allow people to enjoy Dreamcast-specific VMU content on any device... For example, if you bought ES for steam, you can connect remotely to your iPhone running our EVMU app and it will be used as an additional screen with full filesystem support and even the little beeps, haha.

I've made it my personal mission to make EVMU THE number one emulator for the platform and have gone all-out OCD with implementing a billion features, emulating everything perfectly, and supporting every platform ever. Right now it's in open beta, but it pretty much supports everything and does a WHOLE lot of stuff I've never seen other emulators do.
⋅ Supports the Japanese BIOS packaged with the Katana SDK, so you can emulate the whole system including clock and filesystem mode.
⋅ Insanely accurate LCD emulation, including emulated refresh rate to accurately reproduce pixel ghosting effects and also the grayscale effect that a lot of very advanced VMU games used to create the illusion of multiple shades of black.
⋅ Variable resolution, shitloads of resolution modes.
⋅ 100% accurate buzzer support. Every emulator I've ever seen has half-assed the square wave generation. EVMU is so accurate it even reproduces the VOLUME of the wave, because the VMU does not output every wave at the same volume.
[*}Export feature for VMS icons and eyecatch graphics.
⋅ Save/load state
⋅ .LCD File support for playing animations made with the DC Animator tool
⋅ .DCI Nexus support
⋅ FULL filesystem support, meaning you can load raw .VMU flash dumps of an entire VMU image with game AND save data.
⋅ VMU-to-VMU connection emulated over IP (mate chaos over the internet, lmfao) and even serial, because we're planning on releasing an adapter for connecting physical VMU devices to EVMU.
⋅ Built-in assembler/disassembler and instruction-set reference for developers and disassembling VMU game code to reverse engineer it.
⋅ External USB controller support. Even support for the analog stick. Haha.
⋅ Emulates the "Low battery" signal of the VMU, which can be toggled on and off. Certain games actually give you special screens and notification when your batteries are dying.
⋅ Turbo Buttons
⋅ Speed Up/Slow Down Buttons
⋅ VMI/VMS Header file dumps

The only other big thing that I still need to do is represent the filesystem in a GUI similar to what DreamExplorer is doing. The filesystem itself is already fully emulated and allows for access even remotely. I'm hoping to convince some Dreamcast emulator authors to integrate with EVMU over IP for the full DC/VMU experience.

We're working on a project home page right now, but we have a thread with Dropbox links to downloads and feature requests and bug report discussion here:
http://forums.elysianshadows.com/viewtopic.php?f=48&p=91659#p91659

In the Dropbox folder, there should be builds of the latest commit available for Windows, MacOS, Ubuntu, and the Raspberry Pi (because why not?) with more coming soon.

Any way, the point is that I've invested a bunch of time into loading and displaying the VMU save file icons in EVMU. I want to help with this endeavor, and I can add any kind of feature that can help facilitate this process or make your lives easier.

The "dump-to-PNG" feature does fully work for icons, but it's only dumping it as separate PNG images for each frame. I am actually internally constructing the full animation with proper timing for my display... Is it the animated GIF format you guys are hoping to use? Are they animated? What can I do to help?

Also does it use the "eyecatch" extra graphic? Apparently some games have a higher resolution special "eyecatch" in the VMS header that is displayed in the detail view in the Dreamcast BIOS file manager... I have implemented the ability to dump these eyecatches, but I don't know of a SINGLE Dreamcast game that uses them, so it has never been tested... the image output could be garbage, and need a little debugging... Anybody know of a game that uses them?

Romanization of Locations and Names

Question:
In Shenmue 2, is the English transcription of the Chinese places and people written in the pronunciation of Cantonese or Mandarin?

My Answer:
Locations in Wan Chai and Kowloon are written in Cantonese pronunciation. (But, why the exception with Example#4?)
Character names are written in Mandarin pronunciation. Why?
The language of Hong Kong (where Wan Chai and Kowloon are) is Cantonese, so it is prudent of Suzuki-san to use the romanization of such when showing which streets and shops Ryo is walking in; to be realistic for English gamers. Of course I can understand that natural logic, however, since I've only just begun studying Mandarin, can someone help me understand why Suzuki-san would use Mandarin pronunciation for character names in Shenmue2?

LOCATIONS :

Example 1:
文武公園
Man Mo Park

In Mandarin: wen
In Cantonese: man
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%96%87

In Mandarin: wu
In Cantonese: mou

公園
In English: park

Example 2:
恩田楼
Yan Tin Apartments

In Mandarin: en
In Cantonese: jan
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E6%81%A9

In Mandarin: tian
In Cantonese: tin
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E7%94%B0

In English: building (of two or more stories)

Example 3:
点心街
Dimsum Quarter

In Mandarin: dian
In Cantonese: dim
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dim_sum

In Mandarin: xin
In Cantonese: sam
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/%E5%BF%83

In English: street

Example 4:
豆将軒
Dou Jiang Diner

In Mandarin: dou
In Cantonese: dau

In Mandarin: jiang
In Cantonese: zoeng

Shenmue The Movie Dub Differences

The production quality of Shenmue The Movie is very debatable as it omits a lot of really important scenes and changes music timing quite a bit. But it undeniably has much higher quality voices than the game.
Because of that it's easy to assume that the movie has been redubbed since the whole audio mix has been redone from scratch anyway. That is not true however, as they we're able to use the uncompressed recordings... for the most part. And here things are getting interesting.

You see, the video footage for the movie has been captured from the Japanese version of the game. Since the movie was designed to play with the English dub this was a somewhat stupid decission because they had to work with the Japanese lip syncing of the game. This forced them to redo a few lines here and there in order to match the spoken words with the lip animation on screen. Sometimes they just used bits from a different scene, repeated or shuffled things around a bit but every now and then they seem to have made some new recordings just for the movie.

I've put all the changes in one video, comparing the game and the DVD back to back. In order to do this I had to watch the whole thing and compare it to the game bit by bit. This obviously took hours and so did the scene gathering and editing. This was a lot more work than necessary, really... Since it was taking long enough already I also didn't include the minor grunts during fights or QTEs, as well as instances where some lines were shuffled around or dialogue cut short. After all those don't add anything, let alone something new.

https://youtu.be/Jm9iK3XNTyE

I'd love to make a comparison like this with the Japanese version. As far as I know the Japanese dub has only been added for the DVD release and it might actually be a full redub. I know for a fact that Lan Di actually threatens Iwao to kill (korose) Ryo when he's holding him up. But I don't think I know Japanese nearly enough to notice all the fine nuances in the wording that the DVDs voices might have to make a proper comparison.

Shenmue III Update #67: Developer Room Update 3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8hp91ItrnU

Dev Room Progress Report Vol. 3
Posted by Ys Net (Creator)
Greetings Everyone,

In this month’s update we present to you our third development report!
Who’s this new face…? Please check it out!

Thank you for watching and we hope you enjoyed it!
We have also been receiving questions from our backers regarding our plans to participate in upcoming game shows. While our schedule has yet to be finalized, we will be devoting June to game development and as a result, will unfortunately not be participating in any game shows. On the other hand, we look forward to bringing you our monthly updates and hope you do too!
Thank you!
From the Shenmue III Team

Re: Shenmue 3 & E3 2017

Time to remove that 3 from the topic title and start saying prayers for the remasters announcement!

Yeah, they should've had pyjama guy wobble into the office on a unicycle while juggling neon-painted hamsters to the Munsters theme as the words "No E3!!!!!!!" flashed on screen repeatedly.

Re: Shenmue III Update #67: Developer Room Update 3

I'm going to say here the same exact thing I said in the Kickstarter updates comments section.

I love the look of this character and how close it looks compared to the concept model! The animation looks smooth too! As for E3, it would have been cool to have a trailer, but I prefer to know the team is at work on the game rather than spending time, money and energy to prepare something for such a big event like E3.
When the game will be ready to be shown, Ysnet will please fans and gamers!

PS: The new character embedded in a Shenmue 3 environment gives me the chill...

Re: Shenmue III Update #67: Developer Room Update 3

When you get information from Yu and the producer himself about Shenmue related content appearing at a gaming event, and it turns out not to happen, you learn the hard way not to take anyone's word about when or where footage of this game will appear. Plans change, and it can be upsetting. Frustrating even. At the end of the day everyone is entitled to their opinion. But at the same time, everyone should realise this is going to come out at some stage, and that will be a glorious time, so until then, all i can ask is to try and see positives whenever you can, and also try to remain patient. This is a long process, and none of us are going anywhere.

As for the video, i just shrugged my shoulders. It is what it is, and there are positives there. As the person said, they were testing for polygon dents and movements. Thats what i want from them. Thorough testing of all movement variations. He wont be doing jumping jacks in the game for gods sake. I thought it was great, watching the characters various muscle elements flex and expand with the relevant movements. Theres going to be fighting in this after all. As for the look, hes just a made up skeleton with a prototype shell essentially. There will be lots more detail added so im not concerned about that. His clothes looked cool too, as Switch pointed out in his update.

One thing to think/hope for is that since a delay announcement is inevitable now, they will need to counter that announcement with something to give us some positivity along with it, so a trailer may be included then. Perhaps Gio told them that was a better plan, or perhaps he wanted Shenmue at E3 and YSNET said no. Either way, im over E3 now, and looking forward to what the summer has in store overall for Shenmue.
As i always resort back to... one day we will finish Shenmue 3, and be praying to go back to the exciting times of monthly updates when we didnt have a clue what was coming. Its hard in life to stop and take stock of the now, but try to with the Shenmue 3 development process, because, one day in the blink of an eye, it will all be over and life will be very different.

Michael Huber comments on no Shenmue 3 at E3

Good to see the positivity and hype still coming from the man after the update
