Kickstarter Comes to a Close, Reaches $6.3m in Crowdfunding

http://i.imgur.com/cmhn5Zv.png

On June 16th 2015, Sony's E3 conference was overwhelmed by the announcement of a colossal fan favorite.

A Kickstarter was launched on stage (by none other than ex-Sega developer Yu Suzuki) to determine just how far fan interest would stretch.
Shenmue 3 amassed it's entire funding goal of $2,000,000 in an incredible 9 hours, setting a new world record.

Over the course of the following month, community events (such as #30onthe3rd, #TheFinalPush & QTE Event) saw the Kickstarter roar upwards of $4,000,000. In the final days, hours and minutes, fans pulled out all the stops and smashed through a further six stretch goals.

As a community, we went above and beyond to see a series we hold so dear become the Number One record holder for most funded video game in Kickstarter history, gaining an astounding $6,333,295 in crowd funding and over 69,000 in backers.

Various journalists and gaming websites tried to have many believe that Shenmue was lost forever, a franchise the world was never going to see resurrected, something which was better left forgotten.
But we - the fans - the ones who truly mattered, never gave up hope.

Over the past month, culminating in the last 48 hours - with a combined passion for one dedicated goal - we have shown the world how much this series is valued. Despite how gloomy the future had looked many times over the past 14 years, hope was never lost and that is what ultimately counts today.

As Shenmue fans, we never backed down; our passion, persistence and commitment gave us the continuation we have being craving.

Today we saved our franchise.

To everyone who pledged and made history - thank you.

Don't bother checking your banks. The payments don't show up instantly, nor will they show at the weekend. The money will leave the bank on Monday. Just check your emails to see if Kickstarter has processed your payment successfully.

Thank you for saving me the trouble of refreshing my online bank every 10 minutes.

You will be able to see if the bank has allocated the payment though. Just look to see if the "available balance" is lower than your "current balance".

If for example, your current balance says $3,200, you pledged $1,000 and your available balance show as $2,200, then you know your money is being processed.

Re: Money just been collected!

I had the bank physically type a note onto my current account, saying that a company called Kickstarter would be withdrawing a huge amount of money within the next 48 hours. Tha KS to whoever gave us that tip on here and on Facebook!

I got my email confirmations, so that's it. Locked on and stress free!

Re: So...Who beat Chai at the arcade in their first playthro

Nope, but I ended up doing it on a subsequent playthrough by breaking his arm about 50 times, lol, incredibly satisfying. To this day I don't even know how I was pulling off the move, think it involved the throw button and moving the d-pad a certain way, I was running on instinct with it and the move just kept on coming.

I also broke his neck with 'that' movie a couple times.

Re: So...Who beat Chai at the arcade in their first playthro

Eventually I did defeat him but I remember it took a lot of work with training crawl cyclone so so much and resetting my Dreamcast repeatedly until I got it. It's satisfying when you do though, and feels more like that should be the outcome.
It seems pretty random how, if you lose, Fuku-San barges into the arcade just in the nick of time still dressed in his sparring clothes causing Chai to run away and allow Fuku-San to take you to safety.

Haha, exactly! I cheated like a good 'un when it came time to raise that $500 to meet Ren :P

Save, gamble on Big or Small, flip the Dreamcast lid if I lost. I swear this is probably why my last two Dreamcasts lasers died

Walk above Sakuragaoka glitch

This easy to perform glitch allows you to walk high above the streets in Sakuragaoka.
You'll simply need to position Ryo near the shown wall with his feet at two different heights and wait for the nightfall.

This was originally discovered by someone else but I made a video myself anyway just to show more of the area with better quality then the original did.

The prototype of Xiuying

Sorry for my poorly english, I'm a shenmue fan from china.
And I just heard something about the prototype of Xiuying, from Gadio, a chinese TV-game podcast.

In Yu-san's tour to china, his tour guide Ms. Zhang told him the past of her family. Because her grandfather had worked for japanese during the WW II, her parents suffered persecution and died in the cultural revolution. And her elder sister joined the Red Guards (红卫兵, the group killed Ms. Zhang's parents) after that.
Yu-san got inspiration from Ms. Zhang, he planned to design a character named Zhang Hongyu (张红玉) for Virtua fighter 3.
Finally Zhang Hongyu became Hong Xiuying, and there is no doubt that Ms. Zhang's family story is the source of the plot of Xiuying and Ziming.

The interviews of Yu suzuki in beep MD magazines:

This is my second playthrough of Shenmue I and I'm really loving it. I like it even more than 7/8 years ago.
It is a great game play again. For me this is the perfect summer game, maybe because I played it in the summer 7/8 years ago. I almost finished Shenmue I and soon I start with Shenmue II for its second playthrough. I'm looking forward to it. Shenmue II is one of my all-time favourite games.:)

Excite QTE2 list for Shenmue 1 and leaving the harbour early

Hello guys,

A long time Shenmue lover here, got EU dreamcast and Shemue 1&2, played Shenmue 1 to death and realised I still missed out on a lot. Involved in the Shenmue 3 kickstarter and can only thank this site and others like it for really helping getting the sequel I've been waiting for since 2001 finally made!

Decided I should pay the forum back in my own little way, could not find the excite qte2 list anywhere so finally documented it with trial and error for anyone struggling like I did.

Attempting to collect all the capsule toys, apart from the Abe store ones which are just a pain (gold dural ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) )

In trying to get the Excite QTE2 toy, I kept failing so ended up writing down the button list to finally crack it.

Beginner:
B,A,X,XA,B,X,A,B,B,A,AB,X,X
B,X,X,B,AB,AA,B,A,A,A,BB,A,\/ \/
<,<,\/,>,<,\/,>,\/,/\,> >,\/,>,\/,/\,>,<,
/\,>,\/,<,/\,<,/\ /\,>,> \/,
Medium:
>,\/,<,<,/\,<,B,B,\/,> \/, /\,A,B,/\,B,A,<,A,>
<,\/,A,<,\/,/\,\/,\/,/\,/\,
Expert:
B,A,B,A,A,
B,X,Y,Y,Y,A,\/ <,Y,Y,B,/\,A,<,X Y Y,
Y,A,\/,>,>,\/,X,A,> /\,B,/\,Y,A,X,>,<,
\/,>,A,/\,\/,\/,/\,<,/\,<,X,>,B,A,Y,
B,X,>,/\,X,/\,X,Y > A,>,B,X,< /\, \/,A
/\,<,\/,/\,B,/\,A,>,/\,/\,\/,Y,Y,X Y,
/\,A,Y,< <,B,X,\/,>,\/,Y,X,B,< \/,<,
Y

That should be enough to get you to 200k points and the arcade capsule :)

The other thing I discovered is that you can leave the harbour at 8pm and catch the bus home, instead of getting the 8:30 or 9pm bus. (useful if you're doing the infinite work loop)

If you get as close to the exit point as possible before Ryo turns around saying "I have time to ask around more", stick to the left as far as possible and watch people walk to the bus stop(with zoom) . If you zoom in on the bus stop, you should see a van blocking your view, but the people will still be there, only the arms are visible. When the bus turns up at 8pm on a weekday, whilst still zoomed in on the bus stop, the bus will stop and the people will begin to get on. As soon as the clock goes past 8pm, run and you should be able to catch it. Otherwise the bus just goes straight on.

Its a good tactic to get to Dobuita at 8:30pm and get some extra time for capsule toys, arcade or the raffle at the tomato mart.

Hope this is useful, long time lurker trying to pay back all the info you've provided :)

Re: Chai in Shenmue 3

I'm hoping his return justifies his inclusion in the first place. Who is Chai, why is he obsessed with Lan Di, how did he get so gross looking, etc? None of these questions were answered in Shenmue I and honestly I always thought the story would have been just fine without him in it altogether because without a motive or backstory he served no real purpose other than to be an additional antagonist to Ryo.

Re: Niao Sun's persona

one of the little appreciated advantages of having the 16 year gap between shenmue 2 and 3 will be that Niao Sun can now benefit from the technical advances in breast physics. ;-)

since they describe her as cruel and she enjoys inflicting pain on others i assume there won't be any redemption for this character, but obviously thats just a guess. i think that Ziming and Ren are the characters reserved for redemption.

she might be so bad that she could be one of the few adversaries that can actually be killed upon her defeat, like Ryo elbow assaulting her off a cliff or something. again just a guess.

Re: Random Shenmue Thoughts

Yesterday I dreamed about Shenmue 3 :rotflmao: :roflmao: It was about that tech demo that Cedric tweeted about.

It started with a snowy place, showing the new weather engine, there were rabbits deers and other animals there, then the camera panned out, a lot of flowers in blossom and petals started to fly around the sky, in a beautiful manner, and suddenly it changed to a beautiful spring with green mountains and hills plenty of life.

A figure appeared from the distance, it was Shenhua, she was walking around the environment, she seemed very happy and plenty of life too, her outfit was different but similar to her traditional one, she was wearing a hat and had longer hair than before ( I know it makes no sense, but I don't have control over my dreams xD)
While she was walking she meet Ryo, our Ryo, it was the CG Ryo xD, and then when everything was getting interesting I woke up T_T

In my dream Shenhua's dress was gorgeous, I am not very good at drawing, but I tried to make a sketch of the basics.

http://i.imgur.com/vCYtkZL.jpg

Man I wish I could take a photo out of my Dream that whole thing was gorgeous.

Shenmue Gaiden on Hiatus

Shenmue Gaiden has been placed on hold for the time being due to Esspiral no longer working on the project. While, I currently have a some assets for the game, more are needed in order to achieve the desired result.

I'll have to wait for more assets to become available from the modding community

The project will be released at a later date. Stay tuned for further updates.

Apologies, if this disappoints some of you, but it is what it is.

In the mean time, look forward to other community projects coming out on a regular basis on the shenmuedojo forums.

Thanks again.

November 2015 update
Greetings everyone. Today, I thought id update you all on the Shenmue Gaiden project. Everything is going according to plan and we're making great progress. It's certainly a very ambitious project, but i'm confident we can all make it a reality.
http://i.imgur.com/vJbGkUY.png

http://i.imgur.com/NsmXXW3.png

Shenmue Gaiden currently has two types of models, original and new. The upcoming demo will contain the original models, whilst the full game will contain the new detailed versions. These new renders take time unfortunately. Here's a sample of both types.

http://i.imgur.com/EtlN19o.png

The image on the right is the newer model. It has improved lighting, textures, details and special effects. Esspiral continues to improve and his work is simply amazing. I wish I could show you more :)

http://i.imgur.com/BA0DjKD.png

Fully animated weather has now been implemented into Shenmue Gaiden. Currently, only rain is functional. Expect more in the full game.

http://i.imgur.com/d6JmoEJ.png

Although this is a still image, the rain particles are fully animated when playing. This effect gives the game a more professional a authentic feel.

http://i.imgur.com/9uUtQUX.png

We now have the original Shenmue Modder, LanDC working with us. LanDC will be composing music for the title. I've heard a few sample tracks from him already and they sound GREAT!!!. Check out his latest public Shenmue remix below.

http://i.imgur.com/N0DBZvI.png

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sH7gkAC0dQU

In addition to, we've also been given some other great amazing music for the project. Samples to come in following updates.

http://i.imgur.com/g9XBb1X.png

I'm happy to say that after some testing, Characters will now be able to blink and have their mouths move when speaking in a conversation. Here is a prototype shot of one of the characters.

http://i.imgur.com/BZ4uKDm.png

http://i.imgur.com/PUKK8w2.png

During certain periods of the game, you'll be able to freely explore various areas. To do so, we've implemented a world map containing the playable areas of Guilin. Simply choose an area which you wish Ryo to visit and you'll be taken there instantly. Pick carefully, as each area will have different sub stories.

http://i.imgur.com/7V0h5PV.png

http://i.imgur.com/D15nNTQ.png

Throughout the game, you'll be given the option to spend more time with certain characters. You'll be given a ton of choices to choose from when engaging in conversation. Choose wisely. Each choice will alter the character's response and perception of you.

http://i.imgur.com/GcAENhi.png

http://i.imgur.com/K1N3dpo.png

We now have a sample script for those who wish to do voice acting. Please record as many characters as you'd like and upload your demo reel to youtube or email them directly to [email protected]

DOWNLOAD THE SAMPLE SCRIPT HERE

http://i.imgur.com/432rOpt.png

Finally, we'll be posting a new help thread in the community section. This thread will be use to request specific help from everyone. We can't make this project fully without your input. Please help as much as you can. Link to follow.

That's Novembers update for you. Please give us your feedback, suggestions and questions. If you'd like to help out on the project, please send us an email. [email protected]

Thanks everyone.

Hey Shenmue fans. So over the last few months, me and the amazing Esppiral have been working together on a special project. We originally planned to reveal it back in June but chose to delay it as Shenmue 3 was announced. Never saw that coming lol.

Without further delay, the Shenmue Community would like to present to you all.....

INFO
Title : Shenmue Gaiden
Platform : PC/????
OS: Windows XP/7/8 / ????
Release date : 2016 / (Demo 2015)
Game Type: Visual Novel
Story: Non-Cannon. (This is a fan made game. Do not take the story seriously. It's something we threw together and does not represent the actual Shenmue story at all.)

All images are a work in progress. Expect massive improvements as the year goes on.

Shenmue Gaiden will be a spin off non-canon story and take place just before Ryo reaches Shenhua's house in Guilin. A second story based in Hong Kong will also be included. Shenmue Gaiden will focus on the Shenmue Online characters. The lady in red and Lan di will be involved, however, they will take more of a background role. This will be done as we dont wont to interfere with the original story too much. We would like it to feel as authentic as humanly possible.

PLOT 1
After walking through the beautiful forest of Guilin for hours, Ryo and Shenhua finally reach their destination. This brief moment of peace is quickly interrupted as the pair are approached by a young girl begging for help. The Xiangjin village has been attacked by a woman dressed in red and group of men wearing black suits. Ryo and Shenhua make their way to the village to investigate. What sort of danger awaits them?

PLOT 2
After being defeated by Ryo and his friends, Dou Niu and Yuan are determined to get revenge. They team up with an old foe and seek out the Heavens and Xiuying within Hong Kong.

Ryo - Hero of the series. He promises Lui Hui that he'll find the people responsible for the attack on Xiangjin village.
Shenhua - Heroine of the series. She is good friends with the children of Xiangjing village and accompanies Ryo throughout his travels in Guilin.

Lan Di - The main villain of Shenmue. His reasons for being in Guilin continue to be a mystery.

Xiuying - One of the masters of Hong Kong. A very strong and independent woman. She is determined to stop Dou Niu and Yuan once and for all.
Ren - Leader of the Heavens. Nemesis to Dou Niu.

More to be added.......

http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/7933/8izbrdnoseo3vczzg.jpg

All characters sprites will be in full HD and receive noticeable upgrades to their models. Different expressions will also be added to their faces depending on the situation. This will allow us to deliver an extra layer of realism.

Lighting
Sprites will also receive various lighting effects depending on the background and time of day.

Animation
Finally, each sprite will have their eyes and mouths move when speaking or on screen.
Hopefully, all of these improvements will add an extra layer of realism and provide a better overall experience.

Character Model Improvements list
- HD Models
- Dynamic lighting
- Animated faces

http://www.mediafire.com/convkey/0bc6/3a1a00x3mn24jxwzg.jpg

All backgrounds in Shenmue Gaiden will be in FULL HD and optimized to support widescreen. Those who played the previous visual novel may have noticed the game running at a 800x600 resolution. This new entry will run at a minimum 1080x720 and support other resolutions.

The backgrounds will also received noticeable upgrades such as lighting and special effects.

Mechanics / Others

Shenhua's House
Each night, you'll return to Shenhua's house. Before you go to sleep, you'll be able to discuss the current events of the story, along with having a general discussion about every day life.

Shenhua will also teach you the game's system mechanics and give you advice about future events.

Choices, Choices, Choices

Image maps
Certain sections of the game will give you options to explore various areas at your leisure. Each path leading to a different area of the game.

Conversation choices
Those who played the first game knows that it was full of conversation choices which led to different responses. This game will have the same features but expand on them further.

Voiced characters
One feature we would really love to include is voiced characters. We would love the community to contribute to this. Adam Koralik, his girlfriend and others have already expressed their interest in doing voice over work.

Jobs
More unique jobs than the first visual novel.

??????

Music will consist of tracks from Shenmue online, Shenmue Orchestra, Fan made music and Shenmue 2 Guilin music.

More info to be revealed soon!!!

http://i.imgur.com/uBEeiOP.png

Q - What type of game is this?
A - This is a visual novel title. A visual novel is an interactive narrative driven game using static images, text and sometimes video clips. Think Pheonix Wright.

Q - Why did you make this?
A - This is a passion project and was made for the Shenmue Community. We haven't had a Shenmue game in 15 years, so we thought it would be nice to create one.

Q - How many people do you think will play this title
A - Not many. Maybe around 50 - 100.

Q - The character portraits look strange?
A - Esspiral is practically remaking the character models. Its hard work. Expect them to improve in the final game.

Q - Copyright /Sega/Ys net/Cedric Biscay
A - This is a non profit simple fan game. There are hundreds of Sega fangames all over the internet. That said, if Sega, Yu Suzuki, Cedric Biscay or anyone else involved with Shenmue want us to stop the project, then we will cancel it immediately. No questions asked.

Q - How did you make Niao S......i mean the lady in red
A - Me and Esspiral broke into SEGA HQ and stole the plans for Shenmue 5. In all seriousness, Esspiral has put a ton of work into creating this model. The result is magnificent as you can see.

Q - Can I help on the project?
A - Absolutely. Scroll down to the bottom of the thread and see the list of available jobs. Whichever one suits you, send us an email and we will go from there.

Q - You shouldn't interfere with the Shenmue story
A - This game is non canon and will focus on the characters that have been written off from the series (Shenmue online characters). Lady in red and Lan di will take a more background role.

Q - Can you make chapter 2? (Ryo traveling to Hong Kong via boat)
A - Its possible. One day, we may try it.

Re: So is Shenmue NOT mass market?

People tend to classify Shenmue as a niche game because of main two things : the gameplay and the consideration that the franchise was a flop. Without one of these two things, I'm 99% sure no one today would dare this statement.

But we know that Shenmue I sold very well. We know that the Shenmue II success was mission impossible even with Final Fantasy or Counter Strike as a title name.
We know that slow pace/contemplative gameplay can be appreciated by the mass (point & click golden era, FPS/point & click, sandboxes open worlds where you do nothing the most of the time, some stealth games).

However it's true that Shenmue cannot be played by everyone. Shenmue had excellent reviews but half of the reviewers were personally divided and you can find easily similar statements through the net. But which genre is really affordable for everyone ? Racing games, FPS, BTA, action games, GTA, rpg, all these genres can be boring according the player you are.

Then I would add that, unlike more classic games, you don't have to be a gamer to enjoy Shenmue : the mechanics are easily understandable and the themes are all open minded. If you're tired of the typical gunfights fest or brainless button smashing in video games, Shenmue is perfect for you.

It's funny to see Shenmue is somehow the remake of Virtua Fighter. Yu wanted to create a fighting game with a simple and very intuitive gameplay. Ten years later, Virtua Fighter is viewed as the most technical 3D VS fighting franchise and the perfect anti-casual game. Yu felt himself a little ashamed in spite of his franchise being praised by all the critics and the players. Remember the Yu's big smile at this child in the Making of Shenmue. He hates niche gaming, it's like discrimination for him.

Re: PAYPAL SUPPORT FOR SHENMUE 3 NOW LIVE!

I don't know if it could be useful for someone but here a resume of my Q&A :

What is Shenmue ?
- very fast explanation with good links of articles and videos

Why do they ask for money since Sony fund the game ?
- Explanation of the real role of Sony

Why do Sony not want to fund Shenmue 3 themselves ?
- Shenmue is not a Sony IP
- Yu Suzuki got the rights of the game from Sega
- Shenmue 3 is officialy an indie game

Isn't shameful that Sony use crowdfunding to earn money ?
- explain that Sony can't make profit of this game since his role is just to help

If I give some money, I will have to pay again to get the game at its release, right ?
- nope

Shenmue 3 has earned 6 million, why did they announce a Paypal ?
- need of more developers to get the remaining features, the targeted open world and the full experience of Shenmue 3
- people ask for it

If Shenmue 1 has cost 47 million, how 11 million can be enough ?
- explanation of dreamcast budget
- mention of cheap unreal engine 4
- mention of re-used assets

11 million are still not enough to make a real open world....
- explanation of differences between gta like and yakuza-like
- mention of kingdom come and vanishing of ethan carter as good examples of cheap open world
- mention of the privates funds unlocked and safed by YSnet

If the 11 million are not reached, which game can we expect ?
- Yu Suzuki is still happy as he got his favorites features
- the development is already planned according the budget and has moved on.
- a 4 months room has been left to put the remaining concepts. Still need help from players to fulfill the full potential of the game

Why does no big company want to fund the game ?
- Too few people played Shenmue 2 and the fanbase could not extend enough
- Yu Suzuki wants independancy and make Shenmue 5
- Sega still owns the IP

Why does Yu Suzuki not want to conclude the story with Shenmmue 3 ?
- Explanation that Shenmue is a saga where original story is important

Will Shenmue 4 use crowdfunding ?
- quote of Cedric Biscay

Why so few people bought Shenmue in the past ?
- Explanation of Shenmue 1 success (top 5 of Dreamcast games with 1 million games sold)
- Explanation of Shenmue 2 flop : Sega stopped the Dreamcast production 9 months before so a lot of sellers no longer had dreamcast products in their stores + other reasons

The Shenmue 3 doesn't look really well driven
- Yu Suzuki gives a lot of interviews currently
- Yu Suzuki pushed strongly to make Shenmue 3 alive since several years and prepared himself
- Suzuki imagined six different models of Shenmue 3 according the budget type before the Kickstarter
- best sources to follow Shenmue 3 to avoid disinformation

Who develop Shenmue 3 ?
- the team
- Biscay is a true Shenmue fan and expecting to earn not so much money despite being the main investor

Is Shenmue 3 going to be an outdated game ?
- Shenmue 2 brought already new features at its time
- explanation of the new features of Shenmue 3

I want to (re)play Shenmue 1 & 2, why do they not remaster them ?
- Rights of 1&2 do not belong to Yu.
- tweet corsi

Sega - "actively pursuing" a Shenmue remaster.

MCV UK recently interviewed Sega Europe's executive vice president John Clarke at E3. The interview talks about it's new remasters collection, and the benefits of PC. In regards to the success of it's PC remasters, Clark was asked specifically about Shenmue. Heres what he had to say:

The success of those titles has meant that gamers have been quick to make lists of other titles they’d love to see on their PCs. The most common title at the top of those lists? Shenmue.

“It’s something we would love to make happen, something we are trying to make happen," Clark says. "I think we want it to happen as much as anybody out there. Yes, it’s a serious task and it’s not a task that we’re not working on, if that makes sense. It’s something we’re actively pursuing.”

We ask whether Sega has its own list of possible console-to-PC conversions? “Yes, which is almost identical, I would say, to the community’s list," Clark replies. "You know, when we launched Bayonetta, there was a list created straight away on Steam that was saying, ‘What games do you want to see Sega release next?’ Those titles have been titles on our list for a long time.”

Disappointing news? Or clever speak? What do you guys think? Not....not working on it??? So you ARE working on it???

Oh Sega....

Re: Sega - "actively pursuing" a Shenmue remaster.

To be honest, I've always been expecting it to be announced without any fanfare, on a random day. Obviously, I too would much prefer if they announced it at a proper stage, during some press conference, but, alas, I just don't see it happening. Then again, Shenmue 3's Kickstarter was announced at Sony's conference in E3 and it easily became one of the greatest moments in E3 history, so Sega would be smart to announce remasters of the original games in such a fashion too. But this is Sega we're talking about...

Having said that, despite all my cynicism, I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have a very small hope that we get an announcement at Gamescom. Then again, whenever I play the Euromillions I also have a very small hope I'll win the first prize, but I know very well that I'm just deluding myself.

Re: Earliest possible (in-game date) completion?Speedrun rec

If you're interested in what's possible when playing "unfair".

With the Debug Beta you can jump right to the final arrival at the harbor and finish the game on December 3rd.
So you could reach Shenmue II on Christmas Eve! I never tried to carry the save over, really have to do that some day. One thing to note is that the save needs to me modified as the Beta handles them as Japanese.

And if you want to go even further you can glitch back out of the Yellow Head Building and reset the date back to December 0 in 1900! I have no idea if the calendar still works if you keep playing but reaching the stone pit from this point will be 5 days later. So you could in theory finish Shenmue II almost exactly 86 years before Ryo started his journey.

Re: Random Shenmue III Thoughts

As far as we know, Shenmue 3 will take place entirely in Mainland China, in the 80s.
That got me thinking, I wonder how much, if at all, the game will portray some of the stuff that one would expect to see in communist China.
For instance, people wearing Mao suits, which were extremely common, both for men and women, at that time. For those who don't know, I'm talking about this .

Also, another thing that anyone who has ever been to China will tell you is that, even nowadays, ugly-as-sin red slogan banners (known in China as 横幅标语, "hengfu biaoyu") are all over the fucking place. Often, the message is not even political anymore, but they are still an extremely common sight.

We could even see some wall writings, left over in some of the buildings, from the time of the Cultural Revolution (1966 - 1976). One famous example are the ones seen in a beautiful ancient village, just outside Beijing city (but still in Beijing municipality), called Cuandixia , which I've been fortunate to visit.
Here are a few examples , saying such things as "Let us make use of Mao Zedong Thought to arm our minds" and "Hold high the great red flag of Mao Zedong Thought and forge valiantly ahead!"

Personally, I don't think we'll see any of this (especially any reference to the Cultural Revolution, which is something of a sensitive topic), as Shenmue seems to stay away from any political references and seems like it will focus more on China as a traditional, mystical place of kung-fu and whatnot. Not to mention that none of the character designs we've seen so far sport a Mao suit, which is understandable, as they want to create unique and visually appealing characters and if the majority of the NPCs wore Mao suits, that would be quite boring, no matter how accurate.
Still, I'm curious to see if the game will acknowledge that side of China at all.

Re: New Ryo & Shenhua models from press release

I'm in love with the new Shenhua's outfit and excited to see her whole wardrobe as Yu was likely to put emphasize on her fashion since Project Berkley. As said by ShenShun however, I really want to see Shenhua with her original outfit back when starting the game in the cave (if the story actually starts from there).

Game Watch Interview with Yu Suzuki @Gamescom [Translated]

Game Watch published a very interesting interview with Suzuki-san, the interview took place during Gamescom 2017 and includes some really insightful and interesting information about Shenmue III, here's a short summary of it:

⋅  The released Shenmue III teaser footage is real-time in-game graphics.
⋅  All charterers models are temporary and subject to change.
⋅  Facial animations were initially implemented but have been removed about a month ago.
⋅  The teaser was especially made for Gamescom 2017, no further plans to show more of the game at this year's Gamescom or Tokyo Game Show. However, a full-scale promotion will take place next year.
⋅  Deep Silver will publish the game internationally, and they'll provide budget and promotional support. A publisher for Japan is to be decided.
⋅  Suzuki-san would like to continue the series in Shenmue IV if possible.
⋅  Suzuki-san is not interested in forcing the Shenmue story to complete in Shenmue III.
⋅  Shenmue III will take around 30 hours of gameplay to complete.
⋅  The fighting engine in Shenmue III is being built from scratch, and unlike Shenmue II it won't use the Virtua engine.
⋅  A system that allows phone calls with characters from Shenmue and Shenmue II is planned for Shenmue III.
⋅  Suzuki-san would like to bring as many voice actors from the previous games as possible, but some are retired now, he will audition a new voice actress for Shenhua.
⋅  OST from Shenmue and Shenmue II will probably be reused in Shenmue III.
⋅  The new partnership with Deep Silver is strong and it's aimed to improve the Shenmue III experience beyond what was initially planned on the Kickstarter.

Finally, Suzuki-san asks the fans to continue their support, and promises to do his best to make a good game out of Shenmue III.

I have a very strong feeling that 2018 will be the year of Shenmue ...

Update:
Switch has kindly translated the original interview

Here it is, a full translation of the GAME Watch interview. Enjoy!

Game*Spark Interview with Yu Suzuki [Full Translation]

Here's a new article translation from Game*Spark Japan, interviewing Yu Suzuki and executive producer Hideaki Morishita.

I think it contains a lot of interesting insight. They speak about the fuss surrounding the teaser trailer despite the fact that many of the characters in the trailer are nowhere near their finished form.

Re: Shenmue III Teaser Surpasses 500,000 Views in 1 Day

Wow, that's insane! Now, if only this was a really kick ass, cinematic trailer with full animation and fluid editing... ](*,)

That being said, it's grown on me a bit and I'm comforted by Suzuki's words regarding the facial animation and progress of development.

And if the game's true trailer really blows every one away (this one was just a teaser after all), that contrast between the two will get a ton of positive attention. The goal here is to attract new fans, and continue the saga to completion.

Does anyone know the name of the setting in this picture? I've heard people say Chobu (sp) and I've went along with that but I'm not entirely sure. I know Chai appears under the moon in this area so I'm particularly interested, since it's where he'll likely be introduced.

I need to brace myself for him so I don't get a heart attack when he first leaps out on Ryo.

Judging by the surrounding area, it may be Choubu from the opposite angle to this shot.

Yeah I don't think Chai will last more than a few seconds against Ryo anymore, seeing how much he learned during the events of Shenmue II. But then again he seems to never be truly defeated and who knows what he learned in all that time.

Chai could come back with a weapon I suppose. Ryo might be stronger and smarter now, but a blade is a blade after all...

Either that or he becomes a joke character. Or just uses his sneaky ways to mess with Ryo another way.

I kind of enjoy the idea of Chai being truly undefeatable. No matter how many times Ryo kicks his ass, he comes back for more. I guess this is sort of what Yu meant about Chai being a character to easily slot into a scene.

Message to Suzuki-san @ Gamescom

For next month's Gamescom event, I've plans to make a motivational banner for YsNet on behalf of all of us here (and other fan groups), and will deliver this to him during the show, as Switch mentions in his post: http://www.phantomriverstone.com/2017/0 ... .html#more

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i6oha9kv_p8/WXsr96yzF2I/AAAAAAAACqw/Ulk2OZ7YAeQEyPWwjjnnZaizWMyqBgODgCLcBGAs/s400/20370881_10102406428505150_445185908_n.png

I will be going to the show Weds-Fri, and hopefully can meet some of you guys there for you to sign it before I hand the thing over. I'll be hanging around Asia Wok restaurant in the showfloor (see here: http://www.gamescom-cologne.com/redaktionell/gamescom_1/downloads_21/pdf_26/fuer_alle_2/Gastroplan.pdf), and timings will be dependent on when the meet and greet with Suzuki-san is.

PM me if you want to get involved!

Btw the message is literally "Ganbatte!", or "Do your best!"

Gamekult interview with Yu Suzuki @Gamescom

https://www.gamekult.com/actualite/yu-suzuki-le-plus-difficile-est-de-creer-de-bons-personnages-3050797909.html

Interview context: Gamekult is shown an extended version of the trailer with additional scenes and QTEs with "work in progress" mark. Then the interview begins with Suzuki and his English translator.

https://i.imgur.com/jseQm8Q.jpg

Gamekult: First of all, I would like to know why you decided to publicly publish a short version of what you just showed us privately? Is it for marketing purpose or a future backer exclusivity?

(Suzuki begins to talk to his translator who is also in charge of the business side of YSnet. The latter takes the floor.)

YSnet businessman: That's a good question! Honestly, there's no specific reason but some people think showing the extended version is too early. The idea behind the trailer was to announce our partnership with Deep Silver. We aimed to reveal that we got a better financial support. We have been silent for too long so it was important to show something at Gamescom while it's not a real marketing strategy.

Yu Suzuki: We may create an improved and longer version of the video for the end of the year. A true promotional trailer.

GK: After watching the video, I now wonder how you proceed with animation in Shenmue 3. Do you use motion capture, handmade animation or both? Are you working with an outsourcing studio or do you have your own motion capture studio?

YS: We use motion capture as working base then we make adjustments. Everything is captured internally although we do not have a true motion capture studio. We're using a magnetic capture tool because it needs less space to work so we can easily proceed in an open space. However, we are certainly going to use a real motion capture studio for the most important action scenes.

GK: Are you working with outsourcing studios? For instance, TOSE or Virtuous.

YS: We have our own team where people from various companies are working. In general, everything is made internally. The goal is to avoid outsourcing.

GK: How many people are working in the team?

YS: Sorry but I can't tell you any figure.

GK: How will your partnership with Deep Silver benefit Shenmue III? Is the original project going to evolve?

YS: To be honest, we just signed the contract. We have yet to know what Deep Silver can bring us exactly but we hope it's significant (laughs). From a business point of view, we should take advantage of their international network and their communication expertise since they have a great record with Japanese studios.

GK: How will you proceed to make the game interesting for the fans as much for the newcomers? Can we start Shenmue III without having played the previous episodes?

YS: We plan to insert images and videos from previous episodes in ingame situations, something like memories. One of the ideas consists of inserting visuals when you're phoning characters from Shenmue I & II.

GK: Yakuza 3 proceeded differently with cinematic buildups to summarize the story of Yakuza 1&2. I wonder if Shenmue 3 can proceed the same way but the visual contrast between cinematics and the gameplay would be obviously significant.

YS: I still don't know how it may look on screen but it's a possibility. Anyway, we'll decide our own way to proceed.

GK: What will the Shenmue III main themes be? Storywise, is there any particular event or topic you're willing to set up?

YS: It's faster to show you. (Suzuki starts his PC and launches a slideshow) Here we go, the three key points of the game are romance, characters' life and martial arts. Then my main goal is to use the latest advancements in technologies to express feelings through gaming situation. Today there are even more ways of expression but also more challenge with the modern tools. With Unreal Engine 4, the most challenging part is to create good characters.

GK: You mean, using your own engine when you're working on Shenmue I&II was easier than using a foreign third-party engine?

YS: Yes, absolutely!

GK: So far, have you programmed with your own hands?

YS: I created some algorithms and little prototypes but I'm not working at the heart of coding. I worked on an artist's AI who appears in the game, NPC behaviors and some combat scenes. But my main job is research. The final code is written by people who are more skilled than me.

GK: About visuals, how far do you think you are from the final state?

YS: First of all, I confirm that everything related to the characters is temporary. Then I would like to say that, in order to reach the best possible result from a technical point of view, we need a lot of resources, way more than we currently have today. That's why I'm trying to find a balance between visual quality and the other key points of the game, especially what makes the gameplay singular and different from the other productions.

GK: About environment size and interaction volume, how would you rate Shenmue 3 compared to the Dreamcast episodes?

YS: I would say that the game is as wide and dense as Shenmue 1&2... On further consideration, it will even be richer. The time of play is more difficult to estimate since each player has his own pace and may progress differently with all the side quests available. I think more than 20 hours will be needed.

GK: In order to make Shenmue 1&2, you traveled several times in China. Did you travel again for Shenmue III or are you using mainly archives and memories?

YS: I went back to China two years ago, when the project did start. (Suzuki is searching his PC folders to find photos of mountain landscapes, old buildings and busy streets) As you can see, we reproduced some roofs of tiles in the last video. I really would like to display as much characters as those you can see in these photos! (laughs)

GK: If you were going to leave Japan to live in another country, would you choose China?

YS: Not China, no. (laughs)

VG 24/7 interview with Yu

Didn't see a dedicated thread for this so...

Full interview:

The bit we've all come for:

The environments look fantastic, but there’s been a lot of chatter about the character models this week. What do you have to say to that? Are improvements coming?

You know, to be honest… the faces, they’ve not been properly deployed yet. [b]This is a behind-the-scenes story, but up until a point 2 months ago the face motion has been removed. The developer changed some structure to the bones of the character model, and this caused a problem. Because of the problem, we decided to stop working on face animation for now.

[Suzuki opens his laptop and brings up an internal, unreleased development video showing facial animation tests for Ryo and Shenhua. The animations look fairly decent, and certainly avoid the dead-eyed stares seen in the recent Shenmue footage or Andromeda-style exaggeration.]

This is still the sample model, the older one, but… this is a test. We’re going to make this even better. We’re incorporating about 11 different types of face motion, and we’re working towards that. That will be improved a lot.
