crazy booting niggle

Postby joey-bassist-dude_pt.2 » Sun Jul 25, 2010 6:02 am

i've bought a new dvd writer as my previous one died after a few years good service.

now the new drive is a samsung sh-s223 which is s-ata (just as my other drive was), so i kept the same power and data cables connected and just swapped the old drive for the new one.

now when i turn the machine on i see the bios menu come up (if i enter setup the new drive is displayed in the list of drives and can be selected in the boot menu if i wish), after the bios screen i get nothing, there is still a signal to the tv but it doesn't reach the windows screen (with my sound on i can confirm that i don't hear the windows tunes etc).

so with my computer open and running i pull out the data cable from the new drive (leaving in the power cable) hit the reset button and bam, windows 7 loads fine..

i have swapped the data cable for the new one that was provided and have also tried various configurations to plug different drives in to different ports on the mobo, no luck!

any help would be greatly appreciated, p.s. love the new site

What Mobo do you have? It is possible that your Motherboard isnt compatible with your dvd drive. These problems are very unlikley these days but still possible. I would suggest returning it and swapping it for another brand.

it's an asus p5k-e/wifi-ap
only two years old, would imagine it should work okay with my drive.. one thing i have noticed; 4 of my s-ata ports on the board are the usual pale red whilst the other two are black, i have tried them all but maybe there is some order to which types of components go where?

Its hard to say what the different coloured ones are, you might have to read your motherboards manual, but i am asuming that it could mean that you have Primary and Secondary SATA controller ports. If this is the case, try connecting your primary hard drive to a primary port and the DVD drive to a secondary port.

Check the master/slave jumpers on your drive(s)/BIOS.
