XBLA Summer of Arcade's 'Limbo'

Postby Vyse Hazuky » Thu Jul 08, 2010 5:55 am

Perennial IGF favourite Limbo is finally looking to release as the kickoff to this year's Summer of Arcade.

First impressions point to its similarity to the games of Éric Chàhi, as its gloomy use of light and faint colours, tentacle-based mayhem, boyish figure and constant deaths should remind you of Another World and Heart of Darkness, with the notable absence of weapons.

One way or another this seems like one of the best XBLA efforts since Braid (until Hydrophobia doesn't come out) and perhaps one of the best ever (unfortunately, that's hardly a feat!)

Denmark-based Playdead's first game is coming 21st July.

Very noir. Looks... fun I guess is the word. Easy money if you ask me, but it is what it is. Different.

Unfortunately this and the other Summer of Arcade games will not be moderately priced.

1200 points seems steep for any of those games and a 50% increase on most of the previous Summer of Arcade games.

I stand by my defense of Limbo, but MS isn't helping one bit.

Looks great, I'll download it. Down for anything unique at this point.

It'll be tough to compete with last summers hype however. MvC2 (<3), TMNT Remake, Trials and Shadow Complex were awesome. Never tried SPlosion Man, but heard good things.

I've just seen some video reviews and it does look very special (even though it got high scores :D)

Been on my radar for a while too. Summer of arcade looks great again this year, and it's actually in the middle of a large stretch of awesome games on XBLA through a 2-3 month period (many aren't exclusive though)

DeathSpank
Monkey Island 2: Special Edition
Blacklight
Puzzlequest 2
Risk: Factions
LIMBO
Hydro Thunder
Castlevania: Harmony of Despair
Monday Night Combat
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Captain Smiley
Scott Pilgrim
Shank

I hope in August to play this beauty. Other XBLA games like Zeno Clash and Winterbottom have been on my list to try as well. And there's still the pressing matter of Alan Wake... ay-yai-yai.

Great game, I just completed it and loved it :) it may be a bit brief (if you know all the puzzles.... you can complete it in 1 hour and half) but worth the experience. I might be wrong but I saw it full of symbolism (the fears, the desires of the boy, becoming mortal and gruesome reality)...

Didn't feel like creating a new topic just for this (perhaps we could do with XBLA/PSN/VC stickies?) but Eurogamer just published an hands-on feature with another promising game, Hydrophobia.

Limbo looks great and seems to have an inspired level design. A nice little gem, perhaps.
The dream cast is a dream undone, still in death we lay dreaming, so that the saga begins a new.
