Xmas '08 Price War Begins: 360 now £129.99

Xbox 360 drops to £129.99
Tuesday September 16, 08:30 AM

New UK price-point intended to offer Xbox 360 as the first choice all-in-one super console, starting Friday 19 September.

The Christmas console price war starts here. Microsoft has announced price drops across the whole range of Xbox 360 consoles, starting with the entry-level Xbox 360 Arcade at a new estimated retail price of £129.99. The recently announced Xbox 360 core console, with 60GB hard drive and one wireless controller, becomes ERP £169. Finally the 120GB Xbox 360 Elite, the chic black model, drops to ERP £229.99.

Microsoft explains that the new strategy is to compliment the arrival of its Xbox LIVE online service revamp. We’ve still no official starting date this morning, but everybody who’s online with Xbox 360 this autumn will receive this radical update for free. It features Nintendo Wii style Mii caricatures and links together movies, games and other interactive online features in a more appealing way.

Neil Thompson, Senior Regional Director, Microsoft UK had this to say earlier today: “Xbox 360 has now sold over 20 million consoles worldwide and due to its unprecedented success, we are now able to pass on the rewards of that success to the consumer with a new retail pricing from £129.99. With more games, more entertainment with Xbox LIVE and now even more value, we are looking forward to welcoming more customers into the leading Next Generation console, Xbox 360.”

All eyes on Sony in the coming weeks…

SOURCE.

Yeah, I'm a week late. I also found out in my browsings that the Premium SKU was upgraded to a 60GB HDD. Which is pretty cool. Anyway, to me this merely marks the start of this year's posturing for the "#1 Christmas Console" spot, rather than MS opening up any sort of meaningful lead in value or whatever. Unless Sony and Nintendo refuse to budge on their price-points, which is unlikely. Well, maybe Nintendo won't, but I can't see Sony letting MS open up such a huge RRP gap un-answered.

Thoughts?

PS3 bundles, I reckon. Microsoft will bag on about 'winning' Christmas then everyone will answer: "well, duh!"

If it means a lower price for the PS3 too, good.

You will need to pay £165 for the premium as the arcade bundle is crap.

They're rumoured to drop by about $50, I read on Kotaku.

Is there really any point in getting one without a hard drive though?

All wrong. I know two people with the HDD-less Arcade SKU, and they absolutely love it. They've both got tons of games, and both came with two free 512MB memory cards (a common deal on the Arcade SKU, and ironically more memory than the Wii's internal flash). They've both never had an issue with storage. The reason? Neither of them play online. The Arcade/Core SKU gets an unbelievably unfair amount of derision from gamers. It is essentially perfect for those who do not intend to use Xbox Live. It's not as if you can't go and upgrade it with a HDD and an XBL account at a later date, anyway. So stop saying the Arcade/Core SKU is "useless" or whatever, because it isn't.

I think 1 football maneger game needs the hard drive? and you need one to play some games online. The memeory cards are fine for downloading a few demos/arcade games at a time. In the arcade games case you can delete them as it will remember you have paid for them if you feel the need to download again at a later time.
