Great Videogame Boxart

Funny you should mention that, since I was just looking at his work on Front Mission 2 the other day since so many great artists worked on that series, his work probably stood out as my favourite even against the likes of Amano (FM1 and Gun Hazard) and Yusuke Naora (FM4 and FM5), both of whom I am a fan of too. Speaking of Jun Suemi, who I've liked for a while now, I tended to get his work mixed up with Shinobu Tanno who worked on games like Culdcept, Vandal Hearts 2 and Bladestorm: Hundred Years War. He's definitely one of the most...underutilised artists in Japan, I feel. His day job now seems to be as an artist for the covers for the Guin Saga novels.

When said artist can roll out artwork like this:

...Why isn't Shinobu getting more work?

Art gallery here (I was constantly wide eyed by this guy's work):

Guess guys like these (like yourself and Thief both posted) don't draw "kawaiiiii desu uguu uguu" [under age girls] enough for most Japanese game companies nowadays.
Good art sure is a hard sell now in that country, dunno what the fuck happened over there.

EDIT: Thief - Yoneda also seemed to be the illustrator/artist for Silent Bomber (PSX) and Elemental Gearbot (PSX) too.
Also just found his artbooks on Amazon.co.jp
http://www.amazon.co.jp/%E6%9C%AC-%E7%B ... 1%E5%A3%AB

It's absolutely beautiful art.

It's quite funny how back in the late 80's & 90's game companies would feel the need to westernize the box-art when the original Japanese artwork would be amazing.
Nowadays there are times where I feel companies should do so because of the overly cutesy artwork, yet ironically, quite often with Japanese developed games, they don't change the artwork to westernize it anymore.

OL wrote: ^^My experience with Double Dragon has always been a little limited; always liked them, but never owned any. But yeah, I always thought that boxart was fantastic. It's just so... exemplary of what I think of when early beat-em-ups come to mind.

The original Double Dragon was the first beat-em-up I had ever played, there are so many great memories playing multi-player with my brothers on the arcade and eventually on the Master System.

Back on topic ,I just saw this on eBay today:

A rare time from back in the day when a western developed game has awesome box-art; too bad the game itself was just an average light gun game.

Speaking of western boxart that ended up cooler than its Japanese counterpart, I always really loved this one for the original Rolling Thunder.
In fact, it's the only game I have a copy of that's still in its original wrapper. I have an opened one for playing, and a sealed one just because It looks great.

Just stumbled upon this one.
Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna, or Project Setsuna. I don't know a whole lot about the game, but gad dang if that ain't some of the most gorgeous boxart I've ever seen. I love the understated type. Better if you click on it and see the details.

^ yeah it looks so good. I hope the regular version has the same cover art since I really don't like steelbooks for some reason.

^^Same. My only experience with steelbooks, the discs are unnecessarily difficult to get out and put back in, and the cases don't seem to close as well as a regular plastic snapcase.

So from what I've heard this game itself isn't quite as hot as some were expecting (what, unsatisfied gamers?! Unheard of!), but this is still some pretty badass artwork for the US cover.

Earth's Dawn got mediocre reviews on PS4 but 8s and 9s on PC. Dunno why. It's an awesome game. It's like Odin Sphere set in Gear of War. Combat not quite as good nor as well animated as Vanillaware but still a damn fun game. Love the art as it shows the grim world the game takes place in.

A Shmup with 3000 stages and love the boxart.

Oh man I love this game. Remake of Target Earth on Genesis. Of course other games in the Leynos series. I love the box art. It just feels like it was taken straight from a 16 bit era game. It has that 80s and early 90s anime style to it. Very detailed. Anime today I don't watch. Just all has this less detailed super glossy look to it. Meh. Really prefer that 80s and 90s detailed and grit look.

So technically this isn't box art, but Yoji Shinkawa has done some work for an upcoming CoD Zombies expansion.
