Hey there. Sam Mullen here, producer over at the SEGA/Atlus office managing the SEGA lineup, and I can answer this question for you.

For the last couple of iterations of the Yakuza series, the game translations were handled by our friends over at Inbound Games, an independent SF-based J2E loc firm that SEGA has worked with closely for many many years on many many games (hit them up up, I highly recommend!). Yakuza 5 was handle by them, and Yakuza 0 was as well. I think we can agree they do outstanding work.

But for Yakuza 0, we are really trying to not only take it up a notch, but to take the opportunity to reevaluate our approach to the series localization in general. So even after we got the game text back from Inbound, Scott and his team have spent many hours further polishing the dialogue, taking almost a craftsman-style approach by listening to the JP voice along side the text to make sure the English text set against the Japanese voice feels as natural as possible.

The end results of this fine tuning are very subtle, but the game really shines in a way I've never seen in a Yakuza game before, especially the cutscenes and cabaret club sections. Creating a bilingual experience, one that is very Japanese but still English at the same time is a real challenge, but Yakuza 0 makes it happen. Maybe I'll get Scott to make a video about it.

In any case, whether you are a long term fan, or someone who has been wanting to jump but has hesitated: this is it, guys. This is where the journey begins.

Wow, so nice to hear how Yakuza translations are taken seriously again. Only spells good things for future games..

Wow! Just wow! This trailer looks so amazing. I just love Goro Majima. One of my favourite characters in Yakuza. I can't wait for the western release and I pray to God, number 6 will come to America and Europe too.

Yakuza's been in the picture for some time, so if Shenmue HD's going to be off the table because of it then Sega's "full attention" claim will have to have been a blunder at best, or a lie at worst.

Good to see so many trailers being released. They haven't made this much effort since Yakuza Dead Souls..

We just need the PlayStation Store preorder page live in the EU now, Sega!

This is cool. The amazon preorder is also up in the UK (although no bonus incentives detailed yet which is a shame, the business edition looks badasd). I liked the Shenmue-esque vibe of that trailer too, with the retro Yu Suzuki games. I just hope Resident Evil 7 overshadows this game (as they both release the same day, and I assume RE7 will be loud globally).

In the last few months I decided to give the series a second go (as I never liked Y1 back in the day) so I'd taken some of your advice and skipped straight to 3, 4, 5 and Dead Souls. And wow, I'm so glad I didn't hesitate to do that as I love this series now, they just seem to get better with each installment. Will be buying a PS4 for Y0 (and while I'm at it, Shenmue 3 instead of the PC ver). The cities and side quests in these games against just engrossing.

Thank you all!

A wise fan once told me that we should take nothing for granted wherever Sega's concerned... but yes, I do agree with you. Nonetheless, it's a very strange feeling to see arcades of Out Run and Space Harrier in beautiful HD in a game whose name is not Shenmue.
My feeling about it? So many missed opportunities by Sega.

Famitsu's ratings aren't worth too much in my opinion, but here are their latest scores anyway, including Yakuza 6:

Yakuza 6 (PS4, Sega): 10 / 10 / 9 / 10 - (39/40)
Puyo Puyo Chronicle (3DS, Sega): 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 - (32/40)
Miitopia (3DS, Nintendo): 7 / 8 / 8 / 8 - (31/40)
The Banner Saga 2 (PS4, Versus Evil): 8 / 7 / 7 / 9 - (31/40)
DriveClub VR (PS VR, Sony): 7 / 8 / 7 / 9 - (31/40)
Gudetama: Okawari Ikagassuka (3DS, Imagineer): 7 / 7 / 7 / 7 - (28/40)
Megami Meguri (3DS, Capcom): 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 - (32/40)

And here's a 3-hour-long video of the PS4 Pro version of the game, which I haven't watched:

this demo for 6 is fantastic, going back in to explore kamurocho some more!

still trying to build hype for 0, it really is the perfect jumping-on point for newcomers.
