What I'm saying is.. Lau Chan predates Lan Di. He's been a part of Virtua Fighter since the beggining.
What could a change to Lan Di bring to the table?

Lau Chan's been dying for over half a decade. I know its a fighting game where a ninja milf gets turned into a cyborg...thing, but Lan Di could effectively replace a dead Lau(They even use the same style), keeping the same general play style and reintroducing not only a character but a series. The main downside is if in Shenmue 3 Ryo killed him there would be a massive continuity error, still the fact that a "debilitating disease" has been killing Lau for years isn't any better of a continuity.

I'm not opposed to throwing in any characters. I wouldn't mind part of Kazuma's retirement being a few rounds with Akira and company, or another more strike based ju-jutsu fighter in Ryo himself.

I don't know. I don't think story is important in Virtua Fighter (to me at least), and the fact that they never take out any characters (save for that one time) and put new ones spariginly is a plus for me.

It is my favourite fighting game, too.

I would be up for a Fighters Megamix type thing with Shenmue and Yakuza characters, for sure. As long as it's not something simplified, done by Sumo Digital or whoever and ripping off Smash Bros ...

^^ On that note but going slighty off topic, doesn't anybody think it's at least remotely weird that there's like a kid version on Lau Chan (Virtua Fighter kids)? I mean, it's bad enough the character being ultimately a drunken kid, but the part about being an old man in a kid's body always creeped me out a little bit when I was a child.
On a sidenote, there actually is a condition named Progeria, or Hutchinson–Gilford syndrome, in which a child prematurely ages rather drastically. it has a horrible prognosis, with very few people lasting a decade.
Sorry about the down mooder, let's continue with some more upbeat subjects, shall we?

In Snatcher SD and other SD games are they supposedly children or just different?

Nah, it's usually just a change in visual style, generally also marked with an increase in comedic aspects.
As far as I've seen, it's rare that something going SD actually turns the characters into kids.

Unfortunately it's not quite as cool-looking in-game, but in the original artwork it looks fantastic.
From Solatorobo.
