I seem to remember the character being cool, but I need to refresh myself eventually by actually playing the game again, so this one is just for the design.
Sakahagi from Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne:Yes, those are sewn-together faces he's wearing.
Kazuma Kaneko is effing awesome.

Well he's not technically even human...

Was just looking through a list of various demons from the MegaTen series, and this one just stood right out (not that SMT demons ever blend in by any means; they're usually pretty unique and interesting regardless).
Asherah from Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.Yeah yeah, OL's a pervert.
Even more than the female form, however, I just found it surprising how striking the design comes off, despite the general lack of popping color or fine detail. It's unique and it stands out, and it doesn't have to blind you to do it. Even if it were a male body, it would still be an excellent design.

Creepy demon eyes and death-dealing bludgeoning club be damned.
I'm curious now if it was censored in any way in the US version of the game. Have to get further in eventually. It is rated M, so it should have been fine, but being on a Nintendo system you never really know...

I don't think Nintendo censor things like that anymore. The Last Story you have a optional thing and hear two women feeling each other tits. You also watch Zael the main character get a boner. Day of Disaster even in the Japanese version he is saying SHIT a hell of a lot.
NMH/Madworld. ESP Madworld. Really perverse sick things.
Pandoras Tower. To stop a girl turning into a monster you have to kill things and have her eat flesh like a heart. To prevent transformation. Or torture her. Dynamic Zan they published.

True. I was just thinking more so that it was on a handheld system, which for whatever reason still gives off a more innocent vibe, usually. Violence and swearing are always one thing, but when it comes to the "sexual" content, you never know.
Either way, I guess it wasn't censored after all:

^Nintendo of Japan seem more lax when it comes to censorship, just look at the really old Megami Tensei designs from Kaneko.
NSFW:
....Yeah, nothing subtle about that.

I'm glad he does character design in gaming. He is clearly fucked up and outside gaming be locked up in an institution.

I personally think he's a genius. He deserves to be considered in the same league of great videogame artists alongside Yoshitaka Amano. His mind is just obviously brimming with creativity and inventiveness, and his usual style is practically inimitable; no one does things quite the way he does.
Can't wait to see the next game he does the design work for. I love Soejima's work too (the artist for Persona 3&4 and Catherine), but I think it's about time for another Kaneko-designed MegaTen game.
