Completely aside from my "gamer" opinion is the following opinion based on what I think investors are thinking..
I think the fault is with the name. I think someone else might have said this aswell. It's just doesnt scream "New" to me when said. Wii HD? Same but better. Wii 2? Same but better. Super Wii? Same but better.
Wii U? Same but better?
What the investors needed to see was a complete name change to spark enough interest. Not only is the new console shape and look almost exactly like the Wii 1 but it's controller seems expensive and risky.
imo Nintendo should have changed the name completely.
Look what they did with the Wii. They created all this buzz around the strange name and it took off.
I think investors would have liked to see a similar effect.
Nintendo's problem is their starting to be abit like Apple. They have a base product and then improve it but keep the same basic name but add a "2" "Nano" or "Pro" But video game systems arent like computers or ipods. They are or atleast should be treated like very big deals that are new and different. Lately they keep adding letters to their products. "Lite", "i", "3D" etc. They are falling into the same name improvement whole with the Wii.
Investors see this for what it is, an improvement over the Wii. Which is exactly what it is, but thats also the problem.
And doing this improvement in the "middle" of the supposed generation,(even though the Wii has been out for 6 years?) with the same name but added vowel doesnt scream "next" to them. It screams "upgrade". And they know alot of people dont bother with gradual upgrades. (even though its actually a big upgrade)
Again, this is besides my actual opinion on the Wii U as a system. I think it's going to do fine sales wise and I think it'll be a great system with great games.
But name wise I think they botched it. Just imagine the news if they had called it something completely different.
