Been in a bit of a gothic mood lately, so these OSTs hit those notes really well.
Deception 3 is one I haven't played any of yet, but the OSt I gravitate towards the most as my favourite. Trapt, which I am currently playing, has pretty generic medieval music sounds which are rather forgettable, but Deception 2 and Deception 3 have this really dark, otherworldly sound, which makes sense since the composer of those games later worked on Fatal Frame, which similarly have that creepy sound to them.
I love those "dated" orchestral synth music that PSX had loads of from that era.
As far as underrated video game composers go, I think Shigeki Hayashi is one of
the most underrated ever. Nobody knows who he is. But he composes great music all of the time. His work on such games as Knight in the Nightmare (DS & PSP), Gungnir (PSP) and Yggdra Union (GBA & PSP) is up there with the likes of Hitoshi Sakimoto as the best of the "synth orchestral" music to be found in video games. Whereas Sakimoto's work sounds more fluid and stuck firmly in the medieval era, Hayashi's sounds are more well suited to the gothic and Norse mythology. His other works include Front Mission 3 where he arranged all of the music, Riviera which has a beautiful soundtrack and this gem of of a soundtrack:
I used to prefer the original PSX/Saturn OST by Masahiro Iwata, but the remake's music has really grown on me over the years. There's just more variety to it, it's far less ambient too and the use of piano, hard electro beats, guitar, synth and symphonic is just a really great listen for outside of the game, not just when I play the game. So yeah, Shigeki Hayashi, I salute you, sir.
