Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes release date announced, Xbox-exclusive content detailed

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, will launch on March 18, 2014, across all platforms, Konami announced today.

The release date comes by way of a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, which introduces players to the "Jamais Vu" mission, playable only on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. In this mission, players are cast as the cyborg ninja Raiden and must take down enemy bioroid "snatchers." Check out the trailer below for more.

PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 players will also receive exclusive content in the form of a "Deja Vu" mission, where you'll play as classic Solid Snake.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be available to download on the Xbox One or PlayStation 4, or in stores for current-generation consoles, for $30. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners will also be able to download the game for $20.

Ground Zeroes runs on the Fox Engine and features a day/night cycle, as well as dynamic weather conditions that affect gameplay. Missions are designed to help players understand the game's new control and gameplay mechanics, Konami said.

Concerning story, Ground Zeroes will follow Big Boss as he infiltrates a Cuban prison camp on a rescue mission. Players will encounter "explosive plotlines," as Big Boss finds himself on enemy soil in a heap of trouble

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will follow sometime later, though Konami has not yet announced a release date for the open-world game. Series creator Hideo Kojima recently said that the game has "enormous volume" and will not be finished for some time.

Shit like that doesn't sit well with me, at all. Ground Zeroes sounds expensive since it's just a prologue...

They're calling it a prologue, but that doesn't say much for how long it'll be. Could be a full game for all we know. I can't imagine they'd charge 30 bucks for a 2-hour DLC-style gig.

^ They originally charged $60 for the first uncharted, it was only 6 hours lol

Like I said before, im probably gonna wait for a super bundle that will inevitably come out that will have game DLC "prologue" etc. This whole business of releasing seperate parts to one collective and essentially charging $90 for the eventual "whole game experience" doesnt really sit well with me. I guess i'll simply wait it out. I get tired of games companies doing such shotty business tactics. What is also irritating is how they are gonna release this demo (I mean prologue?) months possibly years before MGS 5 actually comes out. I guess developing a demo and giving it to everyone for free to get a feel of the way the new game play style worked was just too easy...

Ground Zeroes lasts less than 2 hours. Can be finished in 5 minutes according to the latest Game informer.

If this is the MGS5 equivalent to the Virtuous Mission or the Tanker chapter and they're trying to get even half retail price for it I would be upset with them. What's the point? Besides printing money of course. Is Phantom Pain really that far off?

Expected as much from watching the gameplay videos. Looked scripted and boring..

I dunno, I think that back when MGS2 was completely new, I would've been totally willing to shell out 30 bucks for just the Tanker mission. Still one of the most stunning parts I've ever played in a game, taking into consideration the time it came out. Blew me away, and I remember happily playing the demo that came with ZOE (which was only about half of the Tanker mission) so many times that it easily would have been worth 30 bucks.

Of course, Ground Zeroes has none of the atmosphere, visual appeal, and technical "wow" factor of a masterpiece like that, so it's a different case here.

Merging video games with movies is not necessarily bad, it depends how it gets executed. Therefore, it wouldn't mean that any game of that kind should be 2 hours. If the meaning of that merge is just on how long the game should last, then those game developers haven't learned the real meaning.

David Cage (who is in the same road) said that games of that kind shouldn't last more than 10 hours. I completely disagree about it, unless it is a game that doesn't deserve a lot of time investment.

Yu Suzuki wanted to start that new era of games (that is movies and games merged), but he believed on and made a game with the potential of 100 hours gameplay (assuming Shenmue series was compiled into 16 chapters).

I don't recall paying £25/$40 for a movie ticket. And it would be an incredibly weird day when Kojima would edit any of his stories into 2 hours. Are Konami a charity nowadays, or something? Just release it with Phantom Pain, ffs.
