Sega movies on the way

Postby Let's Get Sweaty » Tue Dec 06, 2016 7:50 am

Variety is reporting that several movies and TV series are planned for classic Sega franchises, namely Virtua Fighter, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi, Altered Beast, The House of the Dead (again), Shinobi, and Golden Axe.

It goes without saying that, in the grand tradition of video game adaptations, these will be nothing but modern masterpieces of small and silver screen.

If these movies are going to be Hollywood productions, they will most likely suck big time. Certainly in the case of Virtua Fighter. They'll probably 'westernise' or white-wash every Asian character, a recent example is the Ghost in The Shell live action movie adaption.

Yeah, these will go right next to the Metal Gear Solid and Mass Effect movies, as in, they will never see the light of day. Although I'd definitely watch Streets of Rage, I could do with a nice 80s/90s style cheesy action film in that style nowadays, only really John Wick that provides that kind of action film anymore unless you watch Jason Statham films *cringe*.

To be honest I don't understand licensing videogames to do movies.

They have to rework all the story, throw away all the gaming cheesyness, to make just a generic whatever setting kinda resembles a game.

The only movie I saw really adopting the game in full was the japanese movie of ace attorney.

For a while now Sega has been working to establish a few key IPs as movies or TV shows, it's good to see that these plans are finally moving forward. Getting the production company behind Walking Dead involved is a smart move. People sometimes forget that Walking Dead was originally a comic book series, a risky idea to get right for a TV show. Giving these Sega IPs the best chance possible of being successfully realised as a TV show or movie. Which might at last remove the stigma associated with video game tie-ins.

NOT EVEN GOD KNOWS WHAT YOU'RE DOIN!

Yep that is totally a Samuel L Jackson line, I wonder if he has his own writers for lines like that, or maybe he just writes or improvs them himself. Good shit.

I hope Streets of Rage will be a fun and cheesy B Movie with a 90s vibe to it. Something like Lionheart or Rapid Fire would be awesome. I love that 90s B-style action movie feeling.

This is going in the right direction, actually.
