* Lông mày lơ thơ

tuongtndg wrote: I must say that the comment that some have made about missing cartridges is totally on point. I appreciate technology, however, it seems that we get more problems than perks in this generation. The Madden, UFC, NBA Live and several other main game series have deteriorated bigtime over the past few years as has gaming technology from the last generation to now. When I look at xbox and gamecube, they were not far graphically from today's Wii and 360, yet we get all of these technical problems and watered down concepts. I purchased a 360 arcade edtition not long ago hearing that they no longer RROD on you. However, my system isn't even hot, yet it has begun to freeze every 5 minutes just like before it goes to heck. Now there's nothing I can do. I don't have the money to get another one, so after this I'm done for good. Quality is a thing of the past. The more I see things like movies, games, and government deteriorating at the rate they are, the 2012 things sounds more accurate. I know most of the dramatics is due to my anger at my system, but seriously, alot has changed when it comes to reliability with technology.

People here are replying sarcastically, but I see where you're coming from.
We often hear old people saying how things, back in their day, were built to last, unlike now, and, you know what, I agree. It's definitely true. It doesn't just apply to consoles either, but yeah, when it comes to consoles, we have seen way more technical and reliability bullshit from them, and that increase in bullshit is definitely greater than the increase in graphics over the last couple of generations.
It's not just me either. I've had this conversation with my friends and everyone agrees.

So, I feel you, bro. And, as I get older (I'm already in my 30s), the more I feel that I can't keep wasting my life with this bullshit. There's a whole fucking world out there! A world of Nature and of real people, real sights, real flavours, real smells, real textures, real relationships, real creatures and real lore!*
Also, when it comes to enjoying a good story, even the very best videogame stories are just about as good as an average novel. And books have no glitches and bugs, nor RROD, nor YLOD.
And I certainly don't spend nearly as much time with gaming as I did when I was younger. Sure, it's still a major interest of mine, but I'm increasingly getting the feeling (due to several factors) that, before I reach 40, I'll be done with videogames for good, which is something that would be unthinkable for me 10 years ago and that, back then, would actually be a depressing thought. Nowadays, I don't find it depressing at all. It simply is what it is. As long as I enjoy my life, it's all good.

*Yes, I realize I'm posting on a videogame forum while I'm saying this...

Jokes aside, though. I see the problem too. While video games were commercialised as fuck even back in the 90s, I get a feeling it's even more about money now, than it ever was before. What I like about video games is that they let you enjoy a good story in a way which books or film cannot give you.

A lot of trends in modern gaming are just downright appaling to me. Loot boxes, microtransactions, cut content sold separately as "dlc", (online) multi-player focus and so on and so forth. Still, there are a lot of great single player experiences out there now and so I still love gaming. I'm just a lot pickier than ever before when it comes to spending money on games.

And I'm sure I sound like a bitter old man writing this, but I'm ok with that. :D

Well, it's not unreasonable to think that manufacturers use cheaper parts so the product will break after X many years, because it'll force the consumer to buy a new product...

I think this is more common nowadays than it was 20-30 years ago.

Technology becoming more sophisticated is only a part of the problem though. In fact, newer technology can sometimes even help eradicating reasons for failure. One of the most vulnerable parts of consoles have always been disc drives and contrary to the generation of PS2, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Xbox, consoles from the PS3 onward don't read the games off their respective discs anymore and instead install them to the hard drive, only using the discs as a key when booting the game.

This results in giving the disc drives a lot less running time than before and it should at least in theory signifficantly minimize one of the main reasons of hardware failure.

Also, similarly, the reason why your Pokemon Red/Blue battery probably still works is because it only accesses the battery when saving the game. Meanwhile, Pokemon Gold/Silver has to keep track of an in-game clock and everyone's battery is pretty much dead no matter what by now.
